Reasons to love this place and go out of your way to go here:
- Every fish here is a Monterey Bay Seafood Watch "Best Choice"
- The shrimp and seafood are equally eco-friendly
- Every meat is pastured / grass-fed
- The menu confidently offers both meatloaf and Thai curry shrimp, and delivers on both and seemingly everything in between.
- They offer a vegan brownie so much better than any vegan brownie you've ever had or imagined that you almost don't believe them when they say it's vegan; served with a peanut-butter-brownie-vanilla ice cream that would make a fine dessert on its own.
To boot, it's a Certified Green Restaurant, rated by the Green Restaurant Association. Â I've never heard of this before: per the description on the menu, it's one of less than 300 such restos in the US, and the certification means being strictly audited for the environmental impact of its water usage, its takeout containers, its post-consumer products, etc. Â Put another way: it's the sort of place with tea-tree oil soap in the bathroom.
Aroma Thyme seems kind of out of the way and it's in a town that hovers in some undecided middle between quaint and dilapidated, but I really liked it. Â Came with friends and they really liked it too. Â I'll be back when I'm in the area.
A quirky bistro with friendly staff, a large beer selection, great wine list and food menu full of unique and tasty dishes and lots of vegetarian and vegan options that strives to be environmentally friendly, and use locally-sourced, organic ingredients.
Their thin crust pizzas have the most impressively thin crust I've ever had with the perfect amount of crunch!
Prices cater to visitors, rather than the suffering local community.
A great place to come before or after a show at Ellenville's Shadowland Theater.
The menu here has everything from meat to vegan. Â I love the tuna app, the bread basket is always nice, and the pizzas are creative and good. Â ON Sundays they have a burger special, whenever I'm there on a Sunday I do that, its very good. Â Normally the burgers are around $17, pricey for a burger and the area, but they are actually worth it, the meat is good and generous, the toppings are quite creative.
They don't serve Diageo products here (something about that little lobby group called ALEC), which means they have tons of smaller mom and pop brands. Â Its always an adventure to go here and the bar staff knows a lot about both the alcohol and the wine list and are happy to help you determine what exactly you want today.
OMG.
I cannot say enough good things about Aroma Thyme. It was exactly the kind of place we wanted to find after our long hike.
This is a quaint and quirky bistro with an amazing wine/beer selection and a food menu that caters to every kind of appetite that walks through the door. Though this is not technically a vegetarian restaurant, but they have an unbelievable number of tasty vegan /vegetarian entrees on the menu. My veggie bf found some tasty seitan platters and I found a delicious sausage dish with blue cheese spaetzle! BLUE CHEESE!!!
All of the recipes are so varied, inventive, and scrumptious sounding it was almost impossible to make a selection. Normally, a menu that covers as much ground as this is a red flag for me. You know, when I see a Chinese take out place that also serves sushi and tacos, you know they can't possibly do all three the proper way. However, in the case of Aroma Thyme, they know what they're doing. Everyone at our table was beyond pleased!
Fortunately, our waiter, Karl, was the bomb and steered us in the right direction. You could tell that he was very proud of the fare that they put out there. He knew everything about the menu and made several spot-on recommendations. He could answer just about every question we had, and knew all about how the deserts were made. It felt like we were in his personal kitchen.
I wish there were more restaurants like Aroma Thyme.
I'm almost to tears as I write this because I really miss this restaurant! I was working at Honor's Haven hotel and got to eat here just over the summer. This was such a lovely restaurant, everything I could ask for in fine dining.
Even though I came in by my lonesome, the waiter was so nice and 110% attentive to me and everything I needed. He helped me pick out a lovely beer, brought out my food in good timing, and asked how I was doing with just the right amount of care. The food was...well really there are no sufficient words to describe how amazing the food was. I got a Romaine Salad with Tarragon and a Sesame Albacore Tuna. SO FANTASTIC!!! I miss it~~~seriously one of the best meals of my life thus far. It put me in such a good mood that I had a great time even all by myself. I wish I could have stayed for the live music that night. A great hoppin vibe for a small sleepy town like Ellenville.
As i was leaving i even got to meet the wife of Marcus the owner and chef of Aroma Thyme, who was just an absolutely wonderful and inspiring woman.
You gotta check out the website too because Marcus has a really great philosophy behind what he does, especially around the quality and ETHICs on the purchases of his ingredients, which I commend for being so open and passionate about.
This is a rather expensive place to eat but beyond worth it for possibly the best meal you'll have in your life!.
5 stars for the flatbread pizzas and friendly staff.
They have lots of unique dishes, but I go for the flatbread.
Try the blue cheese with delicious sliced potatoes.
I always think potatoes on a pizza are going to put me into carb-overload, but this one is really done well. Â The potatoes have such a great texture and flavor.
Nice wine list and lots of tasty beers on tap.
This is the only place I crave when I'm upstate NY.
It feels like home. Friendly, outgoing wait staff.  Owners that walk the floor and make sure everyone feels cozy and well taken care of. Can either be a go to  place for a Romantic dinner or a family outing. Diverse seating arrangements--live music on Saturday and Thursday nights. The first Friday of every month is open mic night (which is an acoustic assault-!) Complete guerilla warfare!) But thankfully due to the diverse seating arrangements its possible to find a spot in the back where the mic isn't  as loud.
Divine food. Albacore tuna is my favorite. As a fall back it always has great pizzas ans burgers. Fantastic beer menu namely the German/Austrian selection. Very open to special requests--changing one kind of cheese for another etc... Blueberry crisp and chocolate tart were phenomenal.
Surprisingly quaint cute place for ellenville which is a dump.
In the summer of 2011, the resort ladies of the Valley spoke of this amazing foodie haven in downtown Ellenville with such desire in their voices that I decided then and there that I must visit this strange phenomenon just off of 209. While running errands for the children't overnight camp we got caught in a downpour and lo & behold, Aroma Thyme was down the street from the printers - we had to go in and dry off.
Best decision of my life!
I don't know, it might have been the 2 weeks of eating "Sysco" veggies and mystery meat and Sun Chips but the food was so friggin delectable that my friend and I must have looked like crazed mountain woman that hadn't eaten in a month.
The prosciutto & burrata with EVOO were annihiliated, the bread - not a crumb left in the basket, and the shrimp & lobster scampi with fresh veggies - we had restrain ourselves from eating with our hands. So fresh, so light - letting the products' own flavors shine through - truly a culinary delight.
Now - we thought we would take a little dessert gem back with us for a nighttime snack - needless to say we devoured it in the car - 1:30 flat - quite a feat.
But in all seriousness, that was the best dessert of my life.
Poached peaches atop some lemon coconut curd pile with a chocolate drenched cashew cookie underneath, garnished with crushed pistachios = mouth orgasm.
I came back when upstate Memorial Day this year, to see if I had been delusional that day last year. Happy to say that the food was just as tremendous.
I almost cried that my beloved peaches were not on the menu but the changes in fare were delightful nonetheless.
The seared tuna with peanut & sriracha, the lamb, the Eiswein, teriyaki salmon that was so obviously a fabulous house concoction marinade, it influenced changes to my own personal recipe.
Oh and the Saturday night live music that made us want to dance!
Amaze-balls. Can't wait until Labor Day when I'm back in the area :-)
Just over the mountain from me I found ATB on Yelp. I have visited a couple of times, once for dinner and once for a wine tasting event. Overall both were nice experiences and I would recommend ATB. It's a little more expensive than others place, but with their focus on organic and local ingredients that is to be expected. The food and service were both very good.
Review Source:If I gave this restaurant four stars, it would be because it's nice to have green, gourmet, vegan-friendly options in a town like Ellenville. Judged solely on its own merits, Aroma Thyme is probably closer to a three (and a half?). While I appreciated the variety of options, especially as I was traveling with a group, the menu was unfocused. The prices seemed a bit steep, too. Perhaps you're paying for green factor? Our meals were hit or miss. My pasta came out swimming in lukewarm sauce so I ended up filling up on appetizers (the hummus plate, which was great.) We split a chocolate torte that sinfully good. The highlight of the experience was the waitstaff. Patient, attentive and extremely welcoming to our party of out-of-towners.
Review Source:A quaint and cute bar and restaurant in an interesting seeming town, with a very nice atmosphere.  The background music was Coffee House from Sirius XM Satellite Radio  The food was a little pricey, but very good, especially the cheese platter.  I will definitely make a point of going back next time I am in the vicinity.
Review Source:I came for the beer...my wife came for the wine! We loved the large selection but had a hard time choosing. The bar tender was great and even poured a few samples so we could try even more...wow we almost over did it! but with so many greats it was hard not to stop. Traveling for us is about great food and drinks and Aroma Thyme made the Hudson Valley the perfect side trip out of the big city. We stayed and enjoyed a nice dinner in a fun little place. I wish all the small towns had somthing close to this including my own...I most likely won't ever be back but would recomend it to all my friends who hit up New York from time to time.
Review Source:Best the area has to offer?
So, i really wanted this little hole in the wall to blow me away, but it really did nothing of the sort. The menu really doesn't know what kind of a place it is - seems like its chinese, german, american, etc, which is often a worrying sign. Perhaps the area doesn't have that many options, so it makes sense, but rarely can a chef do a great job in such varying categories.
We started with mushroom soup, which was bland and heavy. The burrata was sub-par, but i'm assuming they bought it that way. My salad was predictable and the dressing was oily.
The staff there was great and others at the table were happier with their meals than i was with mine.
Oh, and it was not cheap either, especially given the quality of the food, the atmosphere and the location.
This review was originally written by me on another restaurant review site on 12/8/09, but I still love this place! Â (I'm changing to yelp because it's much more trustworthy & I use it more than I use the other site.)
Great new place to try! Five of us went for a birthday dinner. The food was exquisite & interesting. The place was a little small (not bad until it got really busy...but that's because the food was so great)...the service was very good. Worth the 45 minute drive!
Well, this is a tough one. Â I love what the restaurant stands for: the organic, local, fresh food and all. Â If you're a vegan this might be your only choice in a good 40 mile radius, and it just might be 5 stars for you. Â Our dining party had one vegan and 4 more omnivores.
Maybe we just ordered the wrong entrees, but I was totally underwhelmed. Â The apps on the other hand, were great. Â The hummus and sweet potato soup were standouts for me. Â On the entree side, the sea scallops seemed to be the only entree that held it's weight.
For non-vegan fare it was a mediocre experience, nothing special from my dining experience there. So for me, it was just OK. Â
Bottom line: if you MUST eat in Ellenville, it's probably 20 stars..... but not worth the trip from other areas.
I hate applying the "This could do well somewhere else," city-centric approach to small town restaurants, but Aroma Thyme definitely sets itself apart from everything in Ellenville and the nearby region. Â The town of Ellenville itself is strange and quite vacant, which caused me to leave for college as soon as I could.
But the town finally has some 'nice' place to eat. Â The food is good, although I would advice against the calamari. Â Not terrible, but some of the more boring, spongy calamari I've had in my day. Â Incredible beer selection, good knowledge of wines, and the only vegan option in the 845, I do believe. Â Little on the pricey side, juxtaposed to the high unemployment rate in town, but worth it for sure.
EDIT 1: Â Went here for a couple of beers while visiting family over the holiday break. Â I ordered a winter ale from Keegan Ale's, a local brewery, that cost $6. Â Certainly pricey by local standards, but it's better than a Yuengling at the local dive-hole down the street. Â I get it in a wine glass, ok whatever, but it's pretty much half-full (see, I'm usually an optimist). Â Apparently $6 only gets you 6oz, which was a little shocking, so I asked the server, "Is this normal to get this little?" Â She said, yes, it's quite expensive and that's why you get "6oz, a half-pint." Â So, confused, I was like, "A half pint...you mean 8oz?" Â She insisted, "A pint is 12 oz." Â One more round, "No, I'm pretty sure it's 16oz..." and got a cold "12." Â So I laughed it off cos' I was pretty much having a "How many inches in a foot?" convo and I was saying 12, while she was saying 10. Â Oh well.
Otherwise, they're very nice aside from that, but don't expect a full drink for full prices. Â The owners seem very nice on my 5+ times being there. Â Nice idea overall, but dang- they really need to iron out the help.
EDIT 2: I've given it a better ranking as the bartenders this time we real nice, pretty generous, and someone knowledgeable about rhum (tho he said Rhum Barbancourt was from Jamaica, but I'll let that slide ;)
The only restaurant of its kind in this corner of the world; I make my parents drag me here every time I visit home. The first thing I noticed when I walked in this restaurant was the bottles of Rogue beer they had over the bar. Immediately, I was in love. Oregon beer, at HOME?! No way. How did these people get here? Did their car break down in Ellenville while they were traveling from New York to stay at Mohonk Preserve or something? They looked around and thought "Well this place looks like there's no quality restaurants specializing in organic sustainable deliciousness for a seventy mile radius. Let's open one." Â
Aroma Thyme Bistro is a gift from heaven. The chef/owner does a fantastic job coming up with new exciting combinations of natural ingredients, their super thin crust pizza is amazing (try the potato and white truffle oil pie) and the wine selection is impressive. The owner and his wife are always happy to help suggest their favorite wines and chat with you about the food. Anyone who can make seitan look and taste amazing is a winner in my book.
Unlike many a doomed restaurant in the neighborhood, this place is always totally packed for dinner.
