KP hangout. Great dive bar in the land of no dive bars. I wish this place were around when I was going to school. Come in and enjoy the atmosphere. Buy the cadets hanging around a pitcher of beer and you'll have friends for life. Don't expect white table clothes and champagne - unless you mean 'the champagne of beers'.

    Hidden Great Neck Gem.

In a town not known for their bars/pubs, Baker Hill Tavern is a great place to grab a beer with some friends.  The fresh popcorn/peanuts and assortment of games (Darts, pool & beer pong) can keep everyone entertained, while the game is on the tube.

This place is certainly not flashy, but it gets the job done in every way shape and form.  If you live in the area - check it out!

A bar tucked deep into Great Neck. It now sports a recently renovated front. A nice place to grab a brew, watch the game or shoot some pool. Darts and beer pong can be played too.

Bartenders take requests for which games should go up on the TVs. Popcorn or peanuts, either way a nice touch when you are sitting with friends at the bar.

The prices are nice, especially in this town. $8 for a pitcher of PBR/Miller/Coors can be had. Full selection of alcohol for shots and mixed drinks too.

Weekdays are fairly low-key. Weekends there are lots of Merchant Marines (from the local school). I'm kinda surprised people don't come to pick them up since they do the same physical training that the armed forces do.

All in all a nice spot to sit down, grab a pitcher and watch a game without blowing up your wallet.

The go to watering hole in tame Great Neck. It has a chill dive bar atmosphere with two large TV screens to watch the game. It's calm on the weekdays and can get a bit busy on the weekends, I guess depending on the Merchant Marine schedule.
As for games, there is a pool table, darts, and most importantly, a long table and red cups for beer pong.
The bartenders are awesome and cool to chat with.

$8 pitchers of beer. $3 well shots. $5 bottles (with a decent selection, I adore a Negra Modelo personally).

When I was a little punk, this bar scared the bejesus out of me. On my way to school each day, I'd pass by and notice early-morning drunks or guys from the Merchant Marine Academy milling about the door.

I never once went inside the Baker Hill Tavern - until last week. I was early for my haircut down the street and decided to pop in for a beer and catch a few minutes of the Bama-Arkansas game.

Sipping my brew, I noticed a #33 Great Neck North football jersey displayed on the wall, the bar being located down the street from my venerable high school alma mater. Dark blue with white and orange stripes on the sleeve, it looked exactly like the #31 jersey I used to wear back in my glory days. (Yep, I used to play a little DB, uh-huh).

"Hey I went to North too and played football," said the only other guy in the bar besides myself and Kenny the bartender. "What year did you graduate?"

Turns out we both graduated the same year and we played on the same team -- yet neither of us could remember the other! (Yeah, I was THAT good) In fact, JP was just about the only guy I couldn't remember from that team.

We spent the next half hour reminiscing about those crazy Blazers, guys like Butler and Terence and Thaler and Lorenzo and Berry: We had some talent on that team, and a couple of guys were real psychos. Alas, weed got the better of us, much to the dismay of Coach Thomas (who doubled as the health teacher), and we finished our senior season with a disappointing 2-6 record.

Aside from the Blazers jersey, the Baker Hill Tavern has a few other cool mementos: Along the main wall, there are dozens of B&W photos, dedicated to the firemen, cops, mariners and other Great Neck locals who've made this place their hangout for decades.

There's even a framed photo of the late, great Scotto's menu. Best pizza in town, along with Gino's (which is still around). Memories of that shrimp parmigiana....

As I got ready to pay my bill, my former teammate immediately offered to pick up my tab. A pretty sweet gesture and I left BHT for the first -- but certainly not the last - time. In a town that's changed a lot over the past few years, this place is a true Great Neck classic.
