I was out riding my motorcycle and since it is impossible to got lost on a motorcycle, let's just say I took a little longer drive then I intended.

But the Kentucky back roads are awesome and they sure make you hungry, after about 3 hours of driving I found myself in Latonia and passed a small burger joint called Bard's burgers.

I remembered to have seen this name on some of the best burger in Cincinnati lists, so after a little pondering I turned around. I decided per the "when in Rome" principle, that I might as well eat a burger for Lunch.

Drove by the place again and was looking for a place to park, the little voice in my head told me that it looked a little too unhealthy for the first meal of the day.

First impressions are always important, but obviously not for Bard, whoever he is. Because this place is not very inviting, first word that comes to mind is DIRTY!

Honestly I almost walked back out, but was hungry and my mom have always said not to judge a book by its cover. So I would not judge Bard's by is dirty cover and sat down.

Ordered the daily special which was a double cheese burger deluxe, with a coke and fries.

On a side note, I like to eat with knife and fork on a plate, I don't know who came up with the idea that burgers and fries should be served in a "basket". To my astonishment they had not plates or real knife and forks, but she did find me some small plastic utensils.

The Burger was good, is was big and had a decent amount of flavour. Thank god I got some eating utensils because it was way too big to bite over.
But I managed to awkwardly eat it in the basket, with my kids size plastic knife and fork, and was actually rather satisfied with the burger.

The French fries was not very good, way too greasy and not very crisp, lacking any flavour what so ever. Had I known they did not come with the burger, but was a $3 side order, I would not have gotten them.

All and all the Burger, which I was there for, was good!

But the final check of $12 was way too high for a place like that, because with tip I was pretty much out $15.
Not what I excepted to pay when I walked in the door.

I might be back to get a burger if I am in the area, but it is not worth going out of your way for.

Sorry Bard, but I would have been evenly content with a $6 menu at Wendy's...
which is why they only get 2 stars, because I really have experienced not only better, but better for a lot less $$...

    Best burger I ever had

This is a digusting filth hole that serves heart attacks on buns or doughnuts. They will stack as many greasy crap patties as you request on each unassuming bun or generic grocery store glazed waist gainer. Washing your hands in the bathroom does not count as cleaning yourself its so gross......and that's IF the toilets work that day. A waitress with fresh stitches and two black eyes is assisted by a jort wearing creaton who may or not swing at you as well.

I take my whole family weekly.

Bard's has the best burgers of any restaurant or fast food joint I've ever had.  The special sauce is the most amazing condiment ever put on a burger.  You must try it.  The fries are like Penn Station.  It's not the biggest or fanciest place inside, but that doesn't bother me.  So much better than Five Guys in my opinion.

Well I guess I hit the right time and right day to try Bard's Burgers.

What I have seen it appears the place gets slammed with to go orders.    I went there on a Saturday afternoon and really enjoyed the place (small, clean, great service).

The burgers run you about $4.50 a la carte with fries being abotu $2.50 (estimates).    I purchased the firecracker burger (Pepperjack Cheese Burger, Jalepenos, (I added bacon - the perfect meat candy to do with any burger) and Fresh Cut Fries with a large Ice Tea - total cost:  $11 - so yes on the pricey side.

The burger was really good and moist.    I beleive this place does a similar trick to other good burger joints I have traveled.   I am guessing but I believe the spray their patties down with Worcestershire sauce which gives the burger awesome flavor and that distinguishable crust on the outside - keeping it juicy on the inside.

I will go to Bard's Burgers again and will try to avoide the rush hour (lunch and dinner).

    Enjoy!

Hubby continues to demand Bard's from time to time, and from where I sit the quality continues to deterioriate.

The burgers are now thick hunks of fairly dry, well-done beef, with little of the appealing crispy texture they used to have when they were a lot thinner. The smallest burger is now slider-size, although probably the same weight as when it used to come on a standard size bun. You can get burgers like these about anywhere around town. They're most definitely not worth a drive.

The skimpy amount of cheese on the poutine didn't bear any resemblance to the chunky, melty cheese curds Bard's used when they first opened: this seemed suspiciously like food service grade shredded mozzarella.

The kitchen was tied up for about a half hour when we arrived with two ginoumous to-go-orders, so there was a pretty long wait.

A double cheeseburger with bacon, a junior cheeseburger, one order of poutine, one soft drink and tip set us back $21. For a greasy-spoon burger joint at that price the food better be better.

Not sure who said this place has the best burgers. They should have their taste buds checked. The burger was so overcooked that it actually crunched when you took a bite. The fries were no better, overcooked and most were uneatable. For the price of the bad food at Bards we could have had far better elsewhere for less money. Very disappointing experience.........

    POUTINE. Need I say more?

Poutine is Canada's version of chili-cheese fries. And oh is it delicious! Fresh cut potato fries are covered with a thick brown gravy and topped with cheese curds. This is absolute heaven; you haven't smothered anything in gravy until you've had poutine.

It's hard to find a good poutine south of the border, but Bard's does it up right. The servings are plentiful. The small side order of poutine is enough to fill you up for a meal.

Let's not forget Bard's cheeseburgers! Thick, 1/3 pound, hand-pressed beef patties are cooked up on the grill, then topped with any assortment of condiments. It's recommended not to get ALL of the condiments, or your burger will be dripping with joy. Bacon is over-priced, but you don't need it. The burger is savory enough on its own.

There is also a Bardzilla Burger challenge, which features 10 burger patties on one bun. It also comes with fries, totaling about 5 lbs of food. Eat it all, you get a t-shirt.

Poutine and a burger will run around $10.00 and definitely fill you up!

One day a co-worker said he was going to take me to lunch for a great burger at a joint named "Bard's Burgers."  "Bard's Burgers?"  Why had I never heard of such a beast if the burgers were so delightful?

Plus "bard," though a term not often used, always makes me think of a wandering minstrel.  This is probably partially due to growing up playing "Bard's Tale" on Commodore 64 and partially due to my fondness of the comic Groo (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fgroo.org%2Fchar%2Fminstrel.html&s=57196db0df4eee6270200d424c52f13d0c5ab8233a792d8d708b22595cbecc6f" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://groo.org/char/min…</a>).

I can't rightly imagine why this establishment shares its name with that of a roving balladeer.  I assume it is somebody's name.  Yet, still, Bard is neither a commonplace first or last name.  The mystery remains unsolved.  For now.

The façade of the building is not exactly inviting.  It is located on a small strip in the "heart" of Latonia, KY.  It's small and unassuming, with blink-and-you'll-miss-it signage. The inside is even more undistinguished, extremely small and completely yellow with mismatched secondhand furniture.  And not hipster-laden coffee-shop secondhand furniture, more like "found it on the side of the curb on junk day" secondhand furniture.

This can all be forgiven though, since the burgers are delicious.  Cooked on a greasy flat-top in the back, the corners are always perfectly browned and the burger itself always properly juicy.  The fries almost look hand cut, and are covered with large flakes of kosher salt.  If you are looking for "gourmet" burgers, this probably ain't your place, you're looking at the basics here (tomato, lettuce, ketchup, mustard, bacon, etc.) but if you are looking for markedly above average patties at a reasonable price, and aren't turned away by hole-in-the-wall ambiance, this is a good place to grab a bite.

I have been there innumerable times for lunch, and they have recently broadened their menu to include items such as grilled chicken sandwiches, beer, quesadillas and sweet potato fries, but it's hard to step outside of the burger, due to its deliciousness.  Still, Bard's is a hard place to rate.  Its location is remote to nearly everybody in Greater Cincinnati, its ambiance is absolutely horrible, but its burgers are a delight. I can't imagine recommending somebody to go there for anything more than lunch, but it is always so sparsely staffed if you get there during the lunch rush you should expect to wait a while.

Taking all aspects in to consideration, I don't believe I can give Bard's anything more than 3 stars.  If you live near it, I would heartily recommend it for a lunch destination, but I can't advise you drive out of your way to go there.

My waitress was nice and my burger was wonderful. I'm looking forward to going back sometime and maybe even trying the fried Oreos. However, I was really excited to have poutine in America finally, but the poutine at Bard's is not authentic and did not live up to my expectations. There was basically shredded cheddar cheese instead of cheese curds and the gravy was too salty. I didn't finish it.

This place isn't bad for a burger joint. They have a lot of unique items there like the five-0 which is a burger on a grilled donut, poutine, fried oreos, etc. Their shakes are also pretty good.

Bard's isn't the place to stop in if you're looking for gourmet burgers. The location, the crowd, and the food aren't "fancy." It could even be considered a greasy spoon. It also certainly isn't somewhere you should go if you just had a crying fit about your expanding waistline. In fact, your waistline should be worried. If you're searching for those things at Bard's, I can see you being sorely disappointed.

Bard's is, however, a place to go for a no-fuss, tasty burger and fries.

The burgers are handmade and juicy, served on toasted potato buns. A variety of cheeses and other toppings are available. The fries are hand cut, skins on, and are cooked darker and more crisp than many places.

They also have other great sandwiches, like chicken (grilled or fried), rippers (deep-fried hot dogs), and some super-thick grilled cheese. Yesterday, I noticed that they've also added wings and some specialty burgers onto the menu.

And then there is the poutine. And the deep-fried array of desserts (Oreo's, Twinkies, cheesecake...). And milkshakes. And if you are brave enough, the Bardzilla, a formidable burger challenge that sits ten patties high. I told you this wasn't the place to count calories.

For families, there is also a kids menu that is pretty affordable (between $4-$5). There is a decent selection, and the meal includes a drink and a special dessert-- 2 Oreos! I hear they also have a Kids Eat Free Night, which we need to head over for soon.

A note of caution, sometimes the service here is pretty slow. The dining room is small, but usually only one server and one cook is working at a time. Yesterday, when we stopped in for dinner around 6pm, we only waited 20 minutes for food, but I did see people who came in after us wait for a good while longer. Something to keep in mind if you're in a rush!

Wow..!! Yep, I'm all about this burger joint... This is the way burgers need to be done... just sayin'... Cooked in their own juices, no flavor lost, thick and delicious, abundant toppings, good rolls, awesome fries and a quaint, "in your grandpa's basement", friendly atmosphere... Awesome for the kids and a heart-stopping meal before poker night or a flick with your significant other and friends... go there... try 'em... let me know if I'm not freakin' on the money here... just sayin'...

Stopped at Bards after reading reviews, and hearing good things.  I'm wondering if the people who wrote the reviews or told me good things about this place have ever eaten out before?

The service was mediocre, the fries were WAY overdone (and way too many of them), the burger was a dry, and they nickled and dimed you on a la carte menu items.  Cheese and Bacon added an additional $3.00 to my bill.  And guess what?  The bacon was overdone.  Sensing a theme here?

Don't think I'll be back---I love giving hometown places my money, but not when it's overpriced for marginal food, at best.

If asked a few months ago, I would have given this place five stars. They had the best burgers I'd ever tasted, huge and juicy, really good fries, and decent service.

However, the last time I went the burgers were about a third of the size they once were, not juicy at all, and just overall bad...

They were out of fries, among many other things. How can a burger joint run out of fries???

Also, the service sucked. The food took forever, The waitress never checked on us, and when I asked for ranch she went to get it and never came back.

    I'll never eat there again.

The first time I came here they were out of french fries, chips and a few other things and it was only lunch time. The atmosphere is outdated and reminded me of a cafeteria. The burger was ok, similar to the style of zips  but not quite as good. I almost felt like I could make this at home, maybe it was just because of the standard grocery store style egg bun. To the plus side, they didnt try to drown the burger in fancy toppings, you could still taste the meat.

At the end of the day it wasn't bad, but being short on sides definately took away from the experience. In fact, some people left when the waitress was out delivering bad news. I really wanted to like this place, but I left disappointed, mainly because I had heard so many good things - i came in with high expectations.

Ever since I went to Chicago, I have been wanting to try new things. Any time I go on vacation or on a trip, I want to try different off the wall places instead of just the normal chain restaurants. So I went on Urbanspoon, made an account and started to make a wish list of all the places around Cincinnati that I have never been to, to try out.

That leads me today. Everything Thursday, my dad so generously takes me out to lunch (thanks dad!). But the past few months our whole development team have been going out on road trips to different places. We go anywhere from, Zips, to Quatmans, to Montoyays, to Paula's Cafe (who according to Joanna makes the best Carrot Cake) and so on. So I figured it would be a good idea to try and conquer some of these places I have never been to, with our Thursday crew. Mike Taylor (a co-worker of mine) heard of a place called Bard's Burgers in Covington. So we headed there for lunch.

It is deep in the heart of Covington and took about 15 minutes from downtown to get there. It was a regular old greasy spoon type restaurant an wasn't very big at all, in fact I think there was just one waitress.

Three of us got the special which was a double bacon burger, fries and a drink for $7.95. The burger reminded me of a larger versions of Steak and Shake burgers. It was 1/3 pound per burger. It was served with a basket of fries, and when I say a basket, I mean a BASKET. They were similar to Penn Stations fries, and I could not eat them all.

Mike, the bold one of the group, had a deep fried hotdog with sauerkraut and mustard (they call it the "Ripper"). He also got their basket of fries but with cheese and some sort of sauce.

They also had fried twinkies, zingers and oreo cookies you could get for dessert, but we didn't have any room for that. One thing I did want that I didn't get (I will probably have to go back for) was a handcrafted milk shake. Milk shakes from those types of places usually are delicious.

We will definitely be going back there and would recommend it to anyone.

    **** Second Visit ****

The reason I am doing another post is because, one it is good and two I ate something new and it was very good.

Today I ate a burger again, I got the BBQ Cheddar burger. It was better than last time because there was no trace of mustard on the burger like it did last time. The bacon was awesome as usual and as you can see they definitely loaded on the cheddar cheese.

But the main reason I wanted to do another review is because I had the fried Oreos. They were great! I will definitely be recommending them to others to try and would love to try and fry them myself. They weren't anything like I had imagined. I thought it would be a normal Oreo with some breading on the outside, but what I liked the most about it was that the Oreo (since it had been fried) had melted and became soft. So it really was this cake like breading with powdered sugar on the outside and then just a chocolate flavoring in the middle with of course the white icing mixed in from the cookie.

Definitely worth going back for, but next time I think I will try the homemade shakes.

Tucked just off of the railroad in Latonia Ky, is one fine burger joint. I'm not a burger connoisseur, I'll leave that to my friend Mike at <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2FCincinnatibites.com&s=1bf3661b229a6005692f3df6f5e545aba5a6dbc13557cac9c3165acd11f54dbe" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://Cincinnatibites.c…</a>. But i give this place a great rating for a classic good burger with no exotic spices or toppings.

For $7.95 I enjoyed a bacon (real bacon!!)  double cheeseburger, fries and a soda.

    So it's a price-friendly, basic burger joint.

The burger - two 1/3 pound patties grilled fresh. Basic white bread buns (no sesame seeds), bacon, amreican cheese, dobs of mayo, mustard, and ketchup. Pure mid-western heaven.

The fries - a huge basket of fresh-cut, just-so seasoned fries. I didn't even need to add salt, which is very rare.

The soda - Most people overlook the drink. Here, they had the plastic red tumbler, shaved ice, and fountain soda (diet coke for me). A great compliment. Other joints like Quatmann's just give you a can of soda; i just can't get past that.

Final thoughts - great wad of food. It turns a lunch hour into a sleepy afternoon. Excellent use of basic ingredients to make a great burger and fries.

The burgers were delicious, I think it would have been better there (we had take out so the buns were soggy when we got them home). Also, accidentally asked for "everything" which included jalapenos, banana peppers, ect. There are two selections of toppings one includes lettuce, tomato, onion, ect. The other dabbles into the non-traditional toppings so watch out for that. The fries and milk shakes were also delicious. I saw an NFL star having dinner there so it must be good enough for pseudo-celebrities.

Best burgers around! These aren't some little fancy burgers, these are big juicy tasty burgers! After driving past the place everyday for probably 2 years, I decided to give it a try a couple months ago. I've eaten there at least a dozen times now. Maybe I'm just a burger-lovin' fatass, but dammit these are some good burgers!

The poutine, which is an order of their delicious fresh cut fries topped with brown gravy and melted cheese, is a must-have. The fries, like I mentioned, are fresh cut and flash-fried (think Penn Station's fries). One day, I'm going to try and conquer the Bard-zilla which is a ten-patty monster burger.

I usually order a Bard's Triple burger with cheese, an order of poutine and a coke. After my last bite, I have that wonderful feeling every red-blooded American loves to have: I've ate so much I feel like I'm going to die! Gluttony at no better place!

    Burger: 4.5
The meat was medium well, 1/4 lb, and either hand formed, or cooked like steak 'n shake and smashed from a ball of meat. It had a nice caramelization and crispy edges. the meat was juicy and had good seasoning. I wish it was a little bit bigger. Maybe i was just really hungry.

    Bun: 3
standard egg bun, added a good flavor to the whole thing.

    Toppings: 3
Standard stuff. leaf lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mayo, american cheese (also available in swiss), crinkle cut pickles (+1) all solid, none great. Bacon was an extra $1.30 BOOOO. It had better be some good-ass bacon.

    Accoutrements: 4.5
Coke to drink, free refills. Hand cut fries, really really good, salted with kosher salt. Other items on the menu include shakes, salads, fried chicken and chili. They have some cool specialty menu items too. Poutine (basically gravy cheese fries), Rippers (hot dogs, fried until the skin rips) and fried desserts like twinkies and zingers. And of course they have a godzilla burger with like 7 patties or something. Definitely a place to bust that diet right up.

    Atmosphere: 2
Basically an old school hamburger counter. the tables and chairs are from a church basement somewhere and there are random sparse photos on the walls. The bathrooms are pretty gnarly. It was a slow sunday afternoon. The service was fantastic though. Super friendly and attentive. The place is open till 4 am and there are a few bars nearby so i'm sure it gets rowdy post-2am, which could be amazing.

    Overall: 3.4
This place wasn't on my original list but I had just heard about the joint, and I saw some photos and the burgers looked like my kinda burgers.
The atmosphere brings the score down, but as it is the burger is top drawer. I wish it was a little bigger, maybe next time i'll get a double. I kind of want to go drinking in Latonia (never thought i'd say that!) one night just to get a late night burger here.

Stopped in for lunch and wasn't disappointed. I had a double and frys, burger was very juicy and tasty.

Great place for lunch and they are open till 4:00 am on the weekends for the bar crowds. I understand that's when the Poutine is the best.

Bard's Burgers is a very simple place in Latonia. The menu has about 7 things on it - but hey - who needs complex.

We left with a $13 bill that included 2 burgers, large fry, 2 sodas and a small shake.

I will say - skip the shake - it was more like thick milk...

But the burgers - yum yum! Not quite Terry's Turf Club - but I liked it and hey - if you're in NKY - check it out!
