Love the food ..... great service

We just moved to Amesbury and have been trying a few places. This is by far our favorite place. The Downeast Cider is the best I have ever had! My boyfriend and his friend really enjoyed the beer selection and the prices were decent. I am lactose intolerant and they seemed to have a lot of options for me, and the both times we have been there the staff have been very friendly and accommodating to my food allergy.
Apart from the food and drink being awesome (try the terriaki steak tips) the atmosphere is very comfortable and friendly. The weight staff and management are EXTREMELY welcoming and friendly to both locals and newbies! Anybody walking in there feels like family.

I had only been to the Barking Dog a couple times for drinks. I was really happy with their selection of beer and from what I've noticed with restaurants is that a decent beer/wine/liquor selection tends to lead to pretty delicious food. I went here for dinner last night and I was right!

My girlfriend is vegetarian and sometimes has a hard time finding anything other than a vegi burger at a lot of places. She was able to pick from about 5 different apps and entres which she was excited about. We got the vegetable quesadilla for an appetizer to share. It was loaded with artichokes, mushrooms, onions, spinach and was topped with sour cream and guacamole. It was awesome and I didn't even miss the fact that it was meatless becuase there was so much going on with it.

My girlfriend ordered the Mac and Cheese for her dinner. She said it wasn't the best she's ever had but that it was really good. For my meal I ordered the chicken salad sandwich with sweet potato french fries. I was really looking forward to trying it because I had heard a lot of good things from people about it. It is a made with sliced grilled chicken, red onions, and has a tasty sauce that I couldn't quite pinpoint what was in it. It's served hot in a fresh syrian pocket. It was really good...and cost under $10!!

I rarely get dessert anywhere but I heard that they serve an amazing ice cream sundae made with grilled cornbread, a white chocolate bourbon sauce, and caramel. WOW...it was just as good as I imagined it to be! The cornbread was so moist and was a bit on the sweeter side than most. The white chocolate had just enough hint of bourbon to give it a distinct smokey flavor.

The whole dinner experience here was great! I highly recommend it!

Have been coming here for years, and the food is just ok. I wish they would try a little harder (I hate to say that). The spinach dip is lumpy and not very appetizing. My husband tried the meatloaf and the entire plate was piled up on top of one another. He HATES that...so he was very disappointed. I ordered a med-well burger that was basically rare on the inside. Sent it back and it came back exactly the same way.

They do a good job with the drinks, and the bartenders and wait staff are very friendly.

We always visit but rarely to eat. This time we did!
Peppadews....almost raw, but flavor was good
Steak and Cheese....pot roast? Still decent
Chicken Salad....always amazing!
All in all, staff is always pleasant and accomodating and food is always made to order....you can tell!
We'll always be back!

We come here often. Almost always exclusively for the amazing chicken salad sandwich....when I venture into other menu items on rare occasion, they are always quite good as well. Nice bar area, great beer selection. Excellent martinis too.

I have been coming here for years for the drink and friendly bartenders and just started exploring the menu as I have recently moved down the street. I must say the food is what you would expect. Salads are nice and fresh. I like their take on the spicy ceasar salad. I love the meatloaf and the vegetables are always fresh as well. The pub menu is reasonably priced and so are the dinner entrees so I am not sure why people think this place is over priced. Everyone raves about the chicken salad. I have never had it.
Like I said, this place is very friendly. Service gets 5 stars for sure. Hopefully when I am complete exploring the menu I may bump this up more as this is clearly one of my favorite places to go.

lunch recently, at the bar, service ok but didn't seem that excited to be helping us, burger (the daily special one) was a sort of texas burger and was excellent, the fish sandwich was sort of boring, the peppadew appetizer was very good.....decent beer selection and a pretty good bloody mary....

Menu is not your average stuff and everything we had was great. There was parking in the back, place was really clean and the staff was super friendly. They also had a great beer list and very reasonable prices. Big thumbs up! Love the t-shirts and hats too, cute dog theme.

This was a random trip on a wonderful day that included some beach wandering. We found out about Barking Dog through Yelp and we were very satisfied with the service. The steak tips wrap is a must and I hope to try their salmon on the next run. We were there when one bartender and a waiter were running the show, but service was great.

Didn't feel like waiting to get a table at the Ale House so we asked their hostess for a good alternative. They offered up the Barking Dog. Clean place with a very friendly staff. A decent burger, some kinda pathetic fries and two tall, cold Widmers wasn't all that bad.

I'll wait for a table at the Ale House next time I'm in the area.

Great place to go after work. Great selection of beers and specialty drinks. Last week, I had the Blackberry Mojito...ok...I had three :) Very good apps and anything I've had for lunch or dinner has been good. Nice waitstaff. Good local pub.

Had heard about this place a lot finally tried it. It has a nice neighborhood atmosphere that is authentic. Lot of folks walking from the street who bartenders know by name. Sat at the bar and had grilled salmon. Fiancé had bruschetta topped haddock. Food is simple in presentation but very very well cooked and the price is right. If your looking for a fresh A+ meal without frills and a friendly service I would definitely check it out. Also good drink prices 7 bucks for premium vodka drink 5 bucks pint of microbrew. Can't beat it

I stopped into the Barking Dog on a whim while on a southern NH lazy drive. I was very pleasantly surprised.

We ate in the dining area, but the bar had a very lively atmosphere. On a hot and sunny Sunday, it gave off a dark, cool atmosphere remeniscent of old school pubs.

As a vegetarian, there were more than average options compared to most bar restaurants. I had the veggie quesadilla which, apart from the store-bought-tasting salsa, was very good. My bf had the chicken salad sandwich which, while messy, he insisted was delicious.

The waitstaff was friendly if a bit disorganized. One server sat us, another took our order, a third dropped off our food, etc etc.

All in all, it's a far way from fine dining, but delivers a decent Sunday afternoon meal.

A better experience than the last time. We sat at the bar.I got the same dish- Mac and Cheese with the salad that come with it. I absolutely LOVE their homemade balsamic vin dressing. You MUST try it! It has a rather different consistency- it looks almost like peanut buttter, but so delicious. Even my picky husband likes this dressing- he dipped his french fries into it. Although the Mac and Cheese was a bit dry, it was still tasty and topped with crumbled Ritz. The portion was perfect and affordable too- Just under $9.00. P got the steak n cheese grinder which tasted pretty good and tender- but it was ten bucks for a sub. meh. The brews are moderately priced and there is a pretty good selection. I got a Black N Blue and it was s good pour.
The service is a little less than average. It's hard to get the servers attention, and there really isn't an assigned person to wait on you- they all kinda pitch in, but at the expense of being a little off of their game.
Overall, a good experience though. We played the Baby Boomer Trivial Pursuit on the bar and didn't know many of the answers. It speaks volumes about what types of people they are hoping will frequent the establishment. Boo Yah!

Not overly impressed.... at all. Based upon the reviews on yelp and what I heard elsewhere, I expected great things. It was okay. A solid attempt. Dare I say it.... a good alternative to Chili's or Applebees? Maybe my expectations were too high?

The atmosphere is quaint and cozy and the staff was really friendly and attentive, but the food was just not that good. I had salad with tips (they were out of whatever my first option would have been- probably shrimp or scallops). My date also had steak. The steak was eh, just ok. The drink menu was pretty good- martinis and lots of wine/beer to choose from.

Overall I was slightly disappointed--probably will not be going back.

I sooooooo wanted to like this place! I have been on a couple of occasions now, and it's just kinda lacking for me. I am taking this place for what it is, and I really wanted to enjoy the food, but I didn't. It wasn't terrible, wasn't great either. The waitstaff is pleasant enough. But on both occasions the food was just MEH. I believe that for the portions the prices are pretty spot on, but the food is bland. Both entrees that I got on two different visits (both seafood items) literally had barely any flavor, zing, seasoning, salt....anything. It looked like it would be tasty, and was not. My fiance tends to be a meat and potatoes guy so he got the steak and liked it, said it was cooked pretty well. Maybe I should have just stuck with the pub fare? I don't know. What I do know is that I probably will not be going back anytime soon.

Wife and I have been going there for years. She always gets the chicken salad sandwich, which she usually loves, one time though was way over cooked and was like rubber, mentioned to the staff and they said, oh ok I'll tell the kitchen. I try different items and I think at this point I'll only order the steak tip grinder, which is very good. Food quality though has gone down, Burger used to be good, but now is average, was my fav at one point but not anymore.

Nice atmosphere and the service is pretty good, but we're regulars and they know us from being there many times.

I am actually looking for another Pub as this place is just avg now.

I have always wanted to try The Barking dog, so when I got the chance, I was excited. I liked the look of their menu and thought they had a lot of good options, but either I ordered wrong, or I caught them on a bad night, because I was really disappointed.

I ordered the warm Brie for an app, and the NY strip for my meal. The Brie was your typical wheel of cheese served with toasted bread, which was ok but nothing special. The patron next to me had the chili con queso that looked good however. I should have went with my gut, and ordered something else.

The strip was a little north of the medium rare I requested, and think it would have been better if it wasn't over cooked. It was not the best quality cut of meat, but had a good flavor even if dry. My 2nd option was the flank steak, but I went with the bartender's recommendation of the strip. The potato hash was more of small roasted potatoes covered in sour cream and cheese. If the spuds were a little more processed and crisped on the griddle, it would have made a world of difference to the whole plate. My neighbors ordered burgers, one of which was on a pita (they will make things however you want), which looked good.

I liked the beer selection, and puts it at a 2.5 rating, but it's not an option. The chimay on draft for $7.50 makes me happy. It is a place with a lot of regulars, but that adds to it's charm. Good bar area with a few high top tables, and a few tables in the dining room. I was at the bar on a Friday night around 6:30, and there was a small wait for a table, but a few bar seats were available.

I am torn whether I ordered incorrectly, so I will give them a second shot. The dishes around me looked good, mine just lacked what I expected.

The food is very flavorful, the atmosphere relaxing and their menu broad. Vegetarian's - they have a lot of dishes to satisfy you!

With street and lot parking you should have no problem, though be prepared to search for a spot on the weekend.

As a sometimes difficult vegetarian I have to commend Barking Dog. Their wait staff is always happy to accomidate my mood, whether it be for baked fish or a vegetable substitue they have no problem making my request. Even when it's not on their menu! Not only do I greatly appreciate that but it's hard to find.

The chicken salad sandwich is amazing. I'm not waiting for apple season to come back again. They offer three different kinds of sangria.

The dog never disappoints. Locals love it. We prefer sitting in the bar to the dining room but no seat is bad. Great family place because the kids menu is good and the adult choices are great so everyones happy. BLT and chicken salad sandwich are reliable favorites!

The exterior makes it look like it is a tiny little one room pub. Once you get inside you realize that there is actually a lot of space in there. Decent size bar and the seating is all pretty well spaced out so that you don't feel like you will hit someone if you try to get out of your seat.
The food was great. We got a quesadilla from the meal menu for an appetizer and it was one of the best I have had. For our meals we got chicken salads. They have great salads with good chicken, not the rubbery kind you will find at some other places.
I am definitely making a point to go there again.

The Dog. Our "go to" place for when no one feels like cooking! We are here, on average, at least once per week. I echo the sentiments of others regarding the chicken salad sandwich, it is my favorite menu item and I order it pretty much every time I'm in. Grilled chicken, pesto mayo, in a warm toasty pita bread. What's not to like. Ordering off of the pub fare menu, you'll get consistently tasty foods. We have found the specials to be a little hit or miss sometimes, but items on the regular menu like the roasted half chicken, or the veggie ravioli, were delicious and I'd order them again when looking for a little something more than just a sandwich. The beer selection is decent - something for everyone. And the staff, they're great - whether you're a regular or not, they seem to make everyone feel at home.

I was just going to comment on the chicken sandwich, in a wonderful wonderful pita...but someone beat me to it. It is SOO good. I don't think words can describe. I am drooling right now. Every time I come home to visit my parents I try to get there....might have to walk over now.

Love the barking dog. Very friendly staff. Great beer selection. The best part, the reason i drive 30 minutes one way once a week or more: The Chicken Salad Sandwich.

Its a herb dressing.

ITS FREAKING HEAVEN. They grill chick breasts, chop it up with Red onions and tomatoes, toss it in a heavenly sauce and over stuff a thick pita style pocket. I'm drooling. Its like $9.00, and shhhhh don't tell them I would pay more without question.

Go to this place, for any reason, but try the sandwich

Attractive bar, and good food. Excellent selection of draft beers. We particularly enjoyed sharing the pineapple cake desert. Great job on the fresh steamed spinach..such a relief from the typical fare.

Went with the intentions of ordering a meal after beer and apps, but was discouraged by the bland spinach and artichoke dip and icky crabcakes. Ok, they weren't TERRIBLE, but I didn't want to eat them, which isn't really a good sign since I want to devour everything in sight most of the time. I think they were from a box, fried up, tossed on a plate with a messy handful of mesclun mix. Two of them were not worth $11.

There were no nachos! Lord have mercy. I still wonder what my intended meal of cornmeal crusted haddock with dijon sauce and green beans would've been like. Continued disappointment or saving grace? The world will never know.

They did have a good beer selection, though. Lots on tap and lotsa bottles. Good stuff there.

Why was this place so busy on a rainy Monday night? It's not on account of great food, but they must be doing something right.

Is this two or three stars? I'm torn. I'll give three stars for good service and good beer.

I dunno, I must've gone on an off day.

First time there, wanted to take a look at the drink list and menu before I decided what to order but the waiter wanted to take our order as soon as we sat down. I guess that put him off because the rest of the stay was a challenge to get his attention.

Anyway, the beer list is good and the food looked good on paper but it ended there. My wife got a burger with more gristle than meat and I got a corned beef sandwich that was just inedible. Fries were good though.

Seems like a great atmosphere, nice bar but won't be back.

Smiling bartender Danielle greets you at the door; beer is plentiful!
Casual and friendly.
We stopped in for a lunchtime sandwich and a brew!

This will be my Yelp 1400, a recent Unofficial Yelp Event in my region SNH/NMA. I met up with some local Yelpers for an Unofficial Yelp Event at the Barking Dog. The turnout for this UYE was very small, initially meeting up with Don W. and wife Diane. The parking outside was crowded and I did manage to find a space way in the back of the public lot.

We met up in the bar area which had a moderate crowd, not too loud, enough so we could carry on conversations. The TVs had the Bruins game on and later on a live musician performed near us. The menu sound pretty good and offered typical pub fare including soups, salads, appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, and fish & chips. A full dinner menu was also available which includes steaks, seafood, poultry, pork, and pasta dishes. The prices are moderate. See the menus at http://barkingdoggrill.c… Note prices may vary from actual menu at restaurant. The staff was very attentive asking us if we needed anything. We were going to get a regular table, but then decided to remain in the bar when no one else showed up. Rebecca O. joined us in the bar for a drink.

I started out with a cup of chili ($4.50), which was very rich tasting, including meat, beans, and lots of cheese in a hearty tomato sauce. For my entrée, I had the Barking Dog Mac & Cheese ($8.50) served with a garden salad. The mac & cheese I had was one of the best I've had in a while, orecciette pasta with lots of cheeses baked in a casserole dish and topped with Ritz cracker crumbs. The salad was fresh and went well with the dish. Don ordered a Burger and Diane had the Fish & Chips, which they both thought were decent and average.

We did have a good time catching up with each other, which was the main reason for our visit and we got to try a different place. I would definitely return here again to meet up with others, but I would probably order off the dinner menu or have the yummy Mac & Cheese again.

We met some other yelpers at the Barking Dog for an unofficial and very small event last night. This review is for the bar area only.

Likes: Friendly staff always asking us how we were doing, the bar was quiet enough to talk (until the entertainer showed up), it's a clean place, and there are all kinds of good things on the menu. And the yelpers we were with were awesome (of course), but the venue gets no points for that. The Barking Dog t-shirts said "Come. Sit. Stay." on the back. Cool.

Dislikes: The food that we ordered from the bar menu was average. Ian's mac and cheese looked really good, but the burger and the fish & chips that we ordered were nothing special and the burger could have been cooked more (asked for medium, got rare or maybe medium-rare). it was a big burger, but all it had going for it was size. Parking was tough - even the lot was full. The restaurant menu looked really nice, but I didn't try any of the items on that menu.

The entertainer made it harder to talk, but I'm not complaining about that because we were in the bar. The Barking Dog is the kind of place I'd go if someone else suggested it and I'll be happy to find myself there one or two more times in my life, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it and it wouldn't be my first choice

I haven't been very impressed with this place for a long time. The service is mediocre, and the food doesn't taste real fresh. Its very disappointing to eat frozen fish living so close to the ocean. The best thing on the menu is the chicken salad pita, basically because it is grilled chicken in warm pita bread. The prices are way over the top for a glorified dive bar. Christmas lights up year round and wires hanging from the TV's. Their air conditioning comes in the form of Wal-Mart fans nailed to the ceiling. Talk about Ghetto!!!! Its a decent place to go on a slow weekday night, but there are plenty of places I will go before this place.

Never had a bad meal at The Barking Dog. Whether you order an appetizer, pizza, or entree everything is good. It's not on the menu but they will make you whatever kind of pizza you want. We love the fact the bartenders will create and custom make drinks for the patrons, try their new espresso martini. We've had espresso martinis at many locales, even though it's new to them, it tasted great to us

We love the burgers here. The menu is a bit upscale for a "Bar" but the food is honestly good. The seating area is right next to the bar so it can get a bit loud. There is limited seating but it is worth the wait. I have taken my son there but I feel this is better suited for adults. Parking in Amesbury can be a pain BUT not here... they are right next to a parking lot. Amesbury is a cute town (best in summer) so make an afternoon of it and walk around town then enjoy a meal here before you head home.
Thats what we do.

I like the barking dog purely because they have a nice atmosphere and a great staff but the food and especially the drinks are WAY over priced. I would go often if they cut them down a dollar or two. A typical drink will run you around $8 after a dollar tip. The food is okay normal American bar food but is pricey as well. Apparently they have forgotten they are 40 miles away from Boston. Move those prices down and I'd give a better review.

The beer list is excellent - really beyond excellent, it is easily the best in the area. The staff is nice and friendly. The "pub" food menu (it is on the last page of the menu) is filled with reasonably priced and very tasty comfort food. There is a municipal parking lot immediately behind the building with a back door entrance as well as plenty of on street parking right out the front door

The only place the run into trouble? The rest of the menu. Over-reaching, over-priced and every time we order something off it it is disappointing. I wish they would realize that people come there for a casual meal and that they should stick to what they do best. And the dessert menu is just wierd - there are some things that sound good, but then you order it and it could make you cry, it is such a shame that someone made something that should be so good into something so bad

Upscale pub menu. Well, I hate to call it a pub menu because you are thinking nachos and wings right now, but it was more upscale than that but still casual. I had a steak tip sub with mushrooms and cheese. Came with excellent french fries. The boyfriend had a 10 oz burger. They do have two pages of entrees and the appetizer list was more melted brie than nachos. The bar only had one tv which was on one side (they could use another).

I would definitely recommend this place if you are in the area!

Side Note: A+ on the service. I was going to order a less expensive glass of wine and the waitress told me that I would be significantly happier with the more expensive glass (note the price difference was $1.50). She said it in such a way that I got the impression she really didn't like the cheaper wine and she was passing on a genuine recommendation versus running up the bill.

Starting with an EXCELLENT beer assortment, the Barking Dog is a local treasure. They make all kinds of dishes you'd expect in Boston, but not in sleepy Amesbury. This is a gem that stands in quality alongside Scandia and Molise in the square, only with a much more friendly vibe.

Try the salmon sandwich for lunch, maybe with a mixed greens salad with pecans and bleu cheese crumbled on top.

For dinner, the specials are almost always a great bet.

The service is top-shelf, and as ecclectic as their beer and dish selection. Every meal I've had there has been an experience.

Oh, and they're very kid-friendly. VERY.
