Best craft beer in Tampa/St Pete area! Imperial red and Quackalope IPA are the best! No watered down beers here!

Based on Yelp reviews and a friend's insistence that I try some darker brews, I couldn't let a place so close go unseen. It is a small place, but it has a very cozy feel. The patrons were not snobbish, which for me is always a highlight(I'm looking at you WOB) and the prices were insanely reasonable. As long as you are willing to wait a bit,you will get good service and find a great beer. I couldn't hang with the big boys when it came to The Unkindness, but didn't feel too bad since my date couldn't either : ) Nipperkin was a great find though and I will be back for more of that and random locals singing along to the Pogues...

I am really trying to learn more about beer and spending time visiting the local breweries in Tampa Bay. Barley Mow is a hidden gem in Largo and well worth the drive from Tampa.  They have 14 rotating taps with a lot of their own beers as well as many American brews, most of which are from Florida. I can't wait to go back and taste more of their incredibe brews!

    Barley Mow is an enigma.

Is it a neighborhood bar that brews it's own beer?
Or is it a brewery that runs the neighborhood bar?
    Only time will tell.

For my part I liked the cozy surroundings. Some of the bigger tap rooms are a bit spartan for my taste.

No fault on the beer. The Irish stout and the IPA delivered the goods.

The crowd was a bit more lively then you are likely to find in your average tap room. I see that as a good thing. There were a few non beer drinkers there as well. When was the last time you saw someone do a shot of tequila in a tap room?

The bartender was friendly and good as his work.

Taking a break from all my worries sure did help a lot.

BMBC must rate as being one of the best-kept secrets in the Largo area.  It's a small, quaint, little brew pub on West Bay Drive that's rather unassuming when you drive by.  But once you stop in, you're hooked.

As others have mentioned, Barley Mow is physically a small place.  The inside seating & serving area is cozy, with seating around the bar and a handful of high-top tables.  Outside they have a large patio with covered seating at smaller wrought iron tables, and a large picnic-style table for larger parties.  They also have a couple of fire pits that provide some nice ambience (and heat too) during the cooler nights.  Friday nights you can find live music at the Mow, all of which (from acoustic duos to bluegrass/folk ensembles) has been good.

Now for the main appeal: the beer.  BMBC typically carries ~12 home-brewed beers, from dark to light, all filled with malty, hoppy goodness.  Their offerings rotate, but if you happen to see Quackalope IPA on the menu, GET IT.  Their Windward Wheat is excellent too, as is the Lamp Lighter amber.  Friends who enjoy darker, sharper brews are partial to the Nipperkin and Unkindness.

It's worth noting that this is a place for, well, beer snobs. : )  You won't find watered-down domestics here; no Michelob Ultra, Miller Lite, or any Budweiser products.  No Corona or Coors.  I know some people prefer thinner brews with less body and flavor; BMBC is not for them.  As good as the beers are, the prices are dirt-cheap.  I have yet to see a home-brew that goes for over $5 a pint (or slightly smaller serving for higher alcoholic content), so the price is outstanding for the quality you get.

BMBC is great place to hang out with friends and catch some good live music, or just sit and relax (preferably outside, weather permitting).  There's no pretension here, no "see & be seen" atmosphere or rowdy club-kid vibe.  It's a more mature patronage and establishment; a very welcome addition to the neighborhood and social scene in Largo.

If you are looking for a place to call home - with beer made that is equal to your mother's cooking - then look no further. The Barley Mow Brewing Company is the pot of liquid gold that will make you feel like the luckiest lad/lass so far from the Emerald Isle. But don't take my word for it, I just go there most of the time.

Since the last review, they have fired up the equipment and make their own beer.  Usually, they keep 2 to 4 guest taps going, but all of the others are made in house.

They have sold the liquor license and now just focus on the beer.
They cover most of the normal styles you'd expect to find, IPA, Brown, Porter, Amber, and seasonal brews.   Every Wednesday, they add some adjuncts to the hop rocket (like a Randall) and specialize a different beer each week.

I'm still very happy with the place and frequent regularly.

I couldn't be happier to live a half mile from one of the best breweries in the Tampa Bay area. They have more than a dozen of their own beers on draft plus a few guest taps. They keep their facebook site regularly updated w/ what's on tap at any given moment, which makes it easy to get real thirsty during the day. And they'll fill growlers to take home meaning you can have their delicious beer whenever you want. Truly dangerous in the best way.

Bands play outside on the patio during the weekends, usually bluegrass and acoustic acts. It's great out there when there is a fire roaring in the fire pit. There's usually some folks playing cornhole too, and lots of dogs. Just generally a laid back, cool atmosphere that attracts a pretty fun mix of people.

If you like beer, this is a must-stop!

Great little brewery with great atmosphere. My first time visiting them and it won't be my last. Tried a flight for since it was my first time. Beers were tasty but the cask beer was out of this world as well as the Rye which usually isn't in my taste arena. Can't wait for this weekend to come for my next visit.

Barley Mow is a fairly recent addition to downtown Largo (about a year or so), taking over and remodeling the former pub that was there, thankfully.  Barley Mow is a tap house, with only a few light snacks available for food, but they allow you to bring in your own food, or even have it delivered. (There is a really good BBQ place right across the street, by the way.)

I've been here about 5 times, and the owners and other staff are super-friendly and take the time to explain their beers and make recommendations. They only serve craft beers on tap, but have some bottled beers, wine and liquor too. The last time I was there they told me they were really close to being able to serve their own beer that they brew, but they were waiting on the paperwork from the city. They are very passionate and excited about beer, that is for sure.

The beer selection changes routinely and I have had some outstanding craft beers from all over the country, including a Scotch Ale that I really loved. If you're not sure what to get, they will help you!

It is small inside, but they have a really nice outdoor patio that reminds me of sitting in somebody's backyard. It's a fairly big patio so if you have a large group it will accommodate you.

I've been there when they had a sole musician singing and playing and guitar, and I've been there to see a really great band too. There's a variety of live music all the time.

Barley Mow is a great place for happy hour, late night drinks, or just hanging out with friends. It's definitely worth a visit, especially for beer lovers.

Stopped by for a late afternoon pint at this new nanobrewery in the former O'Houston's Irish Pub location in "downtown" Largo.  As previously mentioned, they're ramping up production and are targeted to begin serving their own brew this month, July 2012.

This pub is fairly small, with seating inside for ~25-30 or so, but a pretty substantial outdoor patio for good weather.   Right now there about ~15 craft beers available, and the hot afternoon called for a lighter taste, so I had Victory Summer Love, a 5.2% American Blonde Ale, which was quite good.  Happy hour from 3-7p gets you $1 off drafts, wells and wine.

No food served here yet, but they encourage bringing takeout, and there's an excellent BBQ restaurant, Smokin' Rib Shack, right across the street if you need a low effort food fix.

There's no pretension here, and the owners Jay and Colleen are friendly and passionate about brewing.  I'm anxious to get back when they begin pouring their own brew.
