Delightful delicious pre-theater dinner; my "doggie bag" was not returned to me promptly, and, in my rush to get to the theater next door, I forgot to ask for it.
I returned intermission. Â Although it had been thrown away, the manager arranged for the chef to make me a whole new duck breast to take home. Â Very classey! Â I cannot wait to return!!
Wow. What an awesome find. (Although the location is a little out of the way if you aren't driving) My friend and I came here on a whim after 9pm on a Friday for a late dinner and were seated immediately at a table for 2 up close to the stage overlooking the seating area infront of the band. Was it pure luck? Probably. So I would advise reservations. But that factor contributed greatly to a good night considering how packed the downstairs bar gets when the band starts at 10. The servers were attentive despite the ruckus and how busy it was. The only annoyance we had was from a water leak in the ceiling above us and a few other neighboring tables (which I hope they've fixed by now). I would say that whatever this place lacks, the ambiance and music is what compensates for it. It's hard to go wrong with an establishment that has delicious food, talented musicians, and an upbeat atmosphere.
Side note: You can't go wrong with the 8 dollar sangria.
Such a fun place for dinner & drinks! Enjoyed a lovely dinner with some great friends my last night in Boston! There were 4 of us & we all ordered something different & let me tell you everything was yummy! Our waitress was great she offered up suggestions & kept tabs on us without being pushy. Great atmosphere! Great food! Just watch out for the Queen Bee...they will definitely sneak up on you!! :)
Review Source:Great place! I was waiting at the packed bar the bartender noticed and went out of his way to hand me a drink menu. Once my date arrived the bartender had the good sense to offer us two seats that opened up at the end of the bar.
We were running a couple minutes past our dinner reservation but the hostess was very accomodating and told us to take our time closing out the bar tab. We sat down and were immediately greeted by someone offering us waters and then by our waiter. He was awesome, always checking in with us with a smile and great attitude. It was a bit loud with the music but that isn't a knock against The Beehive... In fact, the music was great and I had intentionally made our reservation so it overlaped both bands.
The food was great. We had the calamari, the truffled potato & cheese pierogies for apps and the swordfish tacos and vegetarian couscous for entrees. All brought out hot and were very good. For drinks: queen bee, strawberry margaritas, and a couple glasses of wine; all were great.
Overall, staff was awesome, food was great, and the music was excellent.
Two tips: (1) Use their valet.. Street parking stinks and it's only $16. (2) They ask that you only sit for 2 hours so that they can be fair to other parties. Music runs from 630-830pm and 930-130am, so make your reservation from 8-10pm. That way, you get to see two different groups perform AND you have about an hour between sets with less background noise.
Visited The Beehive today for brunch with four other friends, and had a good time. Â We made reservations for 11, and were escorted to our table downstairs about a two or three minute wait, which was great. Â While we were seated at a pretty tight table (would have been comfortable for four), there was enough space between the tables that we didn't feel cramped, which was nice.
Our waiter appeared after about two minutes of looking over the menus and took our drink orders - one coffee, two Beelinis, a gimlet, and a bloody mary. Â I had two cups of coffee, but the pot was less than half full each time I got a cup, and a little lukewarm. Â Deciding I had enough coffee, I asked for an Old Fashioned. Â It came out and looked a little discolored, and after a first taste there was a hint of Coca Cola in the beverage, along with a lot of water and orange. Â Very little bourbon and not much sugar. Â I complained about the cocktail to the waiter, and then two of my dining companions had issues come out about their cocktails as well. Â It seems like the bar and bar staff here puts an emphasis on being "different" and putting a "twist" on classic cocktails. Â Some cocktails naturally allow for experimentation, but when it comes to Gimlets, Old Fashioneds, and Bloody Marys, it's probably best to leave them alone.
Cocktails aside, this was a wonderful brunch spot - two of us ordered the french toast, two ordered eggs benedict, and one went with the poutine. Â All dishes were very substantial and delicious. Â I ordered the french toast and loved the dish - large servings and very light, the only downside was that it didn't come with a side of bacon or eggs - a side of bacon was an extra five bucks, which seemed a little steep.
Overall, our group had a wonderful time and will definitely return for brunch again. Â 5 meals and drinks came to a little over $130 which seemed reasonable. Â The live jazz music at brunch (every Sunday 10:30-2:30) was the perfect little touch that made brunch memorable. Â A great experience.
This was MY PLACE when I was in Boston!
Most of (and by "most of" I mean "every single") time I ordered the short rib grilled cheese on Texas toast (aka greatest sandwich ever). Well actually, I ordered the prime burger once when I ate at the bar (ask for butter-infused Jim Beam) with my brother-in-law... but I convinced him to order the sandwich and I ate half!
The times I've dined here with a larger party, the family-style dinner of appetizers and small entrees has been a great choice. All that plus the location and good local musicians make this one of my favorite eateries and chill spots on earth.
This place gets crowded!
We'd made prior reservations and were seated immediately....though this was organized a little awkward over by the balcony. The tables are too small and too low with the bar crowd spilling over to the dining area. I felt awkwardly dwarfed and crowded in while eating. He, now having spent most of my life at 5'1", I'm not quite telling tall tales.
Our waiter was difficult to understand and the noise level didn't help. I had to ask two different waiters for their drinks menu. Thanks guys. The food was solid. My date got the chicken. Turned out to be a much heavier dish than he'd thought, but it was moist and flavorful. I'd gotten the duck. No real complaints here but it wasn't a standout either. I should've read up on yelp recommendations.
It's a quirky place. I'd be willing to give it another try on a less packed night.
Went here with a friend on Monday night for some drinks and dinner. I have been wanting to try this place for a while but for some unknown reason never seemed to make it, boy, was I missing out!! The place is deceptively large (given all the seating is downstairs) but be prepared for a wait if you want a table, like, a 45 minute wait around 8pm on a Monday night. That just goes to show how awesome this place is. Their drinks are incredibly delicious and well made (Shout out to the two bartenders (one male one female) working on Monday 6/24, you guys are fantastic! Sorry about not catching your names) and run about $10-12 for a cocktail. My friend and I sat at the bar for a while and started getting pretty hungry so we checked on how long it would be for a table and the timing didn't seem to move, so the bartender told us we could sit upstairs and order appetizers while we waited, which was awesome because we ended up having awesome seats to see the incredible French musicians playing downstairs. Now, the bartender did warn us that service would be a bit slow since it technically isn't where they serve food, but whatever, it was crazy packed and we weren't in any kind of rush. The food was great, my friend got the burger ($16) (which looked amazing with huge steak fries) and I got the special which was a smoked trout cake in tahini-esq dill sauce over a sliced cucumber salad ($12) which was really good and we shared the mussels appetizer ($15), which was great! The place is a bit pricey, but the food is fantastic, the atmosphere is great, especially with the live music, and the drinks are strong and well made, so really, it's worth the money. Not to mention, at least with the bartenders we had, the service was actually friendly, maybe a tad slow, but I will take someone who smiles and talks to you over someone who doesn't give a sh*t (aka a lot of places in Boston I have been to) any day of the week! Love the Beehive, can't wait to go back once my wallet replenishes!
Review Source:my first time here. Â went for brunch for the live jazz, but the jazz band was on a break when we got there at around 11:30.
i love bloody  marys and this really disappointed. watery, bland, and kind of bitter - it was undrinkable.  it says a lot if i cannot down an alcoholic drink.  esp at $11 a pop.
clam chowder was meh.
bf's quiche came out looking like a brown brick of meatloaf. i thought they brought out the wrong dish. Â and it tasted like a big brown brick. Â my bf couldn't finish it, because the dryness of the quiche started to choke him - and he can eat a lot and pretty much anything.
i give it two stars because waitstaff was super nice, almost overly peppy, but that's not a real complaint. and the eggs benedict was pretty good. Â but not enough to bring us back.
This was a dive so automatically a neat little place. It is expensive tho so be aware before you go nuts on the menu. Â The food was good but the place was very hot. Our table was sweating through most of meal. I will definitely go back but I would want to sit near the stage so we can get the "jazz brunch" feel.
Review Source:We jumped into this place after some apps and drinks at another place that specializes in that. It was Restaurant week or something and they had a ton of reservations almost ready to start coming in. But they accommodated our party of 3 and we all enjoyed the drinks and meals. Not the least expensive place around but we expected as much right next to Hamersleys. I had never heard of it before but was glad we went. Great service and food. The only irritating issue for me was one of the hosts seemed to revel in trying to look like an FBI agent complete with suit, earpiece and dramatic scowl. I dont know why this irritated me but it just did. It didnt take away from the overall experience, Im just venting.
Review Source:My fiance and I had heard that the Beehive was good but we were blown away by our experience. Totally awesome. We started with the ribs and calamari appetizers that were outstanding. I had the Coq Au Vin which was to die for and my fiance had the stuffed ribs ... both amazing. All of our food came out at a great pace considering how busy the kitchen was. The one thing I didn't like was that our waitress didn't bring out our appetizers or meals but she made a point to stop by frequently and check in.
Our waitress (Meredith) was cute, quirky, kind and funny. She was prompt, knowledgeable about the menu, and very adept.
The ambiance and food make this place. The downstairs is tastefully decorated and transforms the space with cozy warm ambiance Try one of their cocktails, wonderfully balanced. I liked the Queen Bee, it was vodka, grapefruit, and St. Germain, I believe.
We went on a Tuesday and the vibe was GREAT and the jazz music was fantastic. The Beehive is a cozy, romantic, fun, hip place to get a great meal. This place is a TOTAL GEM and you must try it!
It's rare that I base such a tepid review almost purely on price point, but two drinks, an entree, and a split dessert ran me $70 at The Beehive, and nothing I had was even remotely memorable (save for the decadent maple bread pudding, which was basically french toast--maybe I should come back for brunch?).
What I do remember was a waitress trying to upsell every chance she got and a basket of the most lifeless bread I've ever been served in a restaurant.
Do you like jazz music? Go there on a Sunday for brunch and you'll love it. They also have interesting art hung on the walls, I find myself staring at them for the longest time. If your a group of 2-3 sit at the bar, it's a lot of fun as the bar tenders are really friendly! They make a great french toast, salads, the burger was really good as well. The banana walnut cake is delicious!
I like this place for the ambiance.....we always have a good time there.
Came here twice- once for brunch and once for late night music. Ummm.. on the same day. Love the art and ambience here.
Tip: when making a reso on open table, credit card is required.
Brunch: we sat downstairs with a view of the jazz band and had an amazing brunch. The food was spot on - tomato soup was very rich and tasty, pork grilled cheese on thick toast was deliciously fattening, as was the eggs Benedict (perfect cooked fries on the side and perfectly poached egg). Server was very friendly.
Late night music: Even tho it was 10 hours later, it was the same host (that remembered us) and gave us an amazing table upstairs overlooking the stage and downstairs area. We ordered the mezze platter which was a ton of food and SO MANY different tasty dips with hot pita. Super tasty. 2 mini-sized bottles of Chandon (SO reasonably priced at $12 each) made for a nice accompaniment. Had the bread pudding for dessert which was thick, had an amazing caramel rum sauce, and tasty melty vanilla ice cream on top. Server was fantastic. Music amazing and not too loud.
Two SOLID experiences at Beehive. This place gets 2 thumbs up and 5 stars for sure.
Absolutely loved this place. Such adorable decor and the perfect setting for a date night. I went with friends and got the shrimp and cheddar grits (I finally understand what all the hubbub is about grits- so amazing!) and the poitine. A friend had to convince us it was worth ordering over all the other fantastic-sounding items on the menu and I am soooo glad we did. If you visit the beehive, make sure to order yourself a dish!
Review Source:I really like the jazzy, shaggy chic vibe Beehive has going on.
The live jazz makes it though, and any age can enjoy it.
The menu and cocktails are offbeat, but they're fun and they suit the restaurant. They're always changing it up too. It's a bit pricey, but you're paying for the atmosphere/ music.
If you're having dinner, the waitresses may try to rush you out as soon as you've finished your plate; so if you're planning on enjoying the music, take your time ordering your food. I recommend sitting at the downstairs bar to avoid this.
If you'd rather sit at a table, best to make a reservation too.
Obnoxious owner/management, pretentious atmosphere, mediocre food. "No, you can't move a chair from an empty table to the table where the friends you're joining are sitting. I'm the rude manager with goofy glasses who thinks the best way to endear myself to customers is to treat them like petulant children."
This place sucks.
I love the jazzy, underground, hipster atmosphere here. Definitely come when they have live music and enjoy a table near the stage while sipping on some Beehive Honey Brew beer... Yum!
As much as I want to spend the majority of my night in that cool, dim lit, funky restaurant, I would not go back for dinner. Came here a couple of times to dine and was not impressed with their food. The chicken was too dry and everything else either my friend or I ordered was too buttery or heavy for me. Portions were huge but I rather have my money go towards the quality of the dish rather than quantity.
Favourite brunch spot ever! Great Jazz music every Sunday we went to visit.
Service has always been relaxed and comfortable.
People of all ages go there and always walk out with a full stomach and satisfied taste bud.
Recommend their cake on the appetizer menu as it constantly changes. French toast is amazing! Eggs Benedict is scrumptious and cooked to perfection ( I prefer mine with smoked salmon).
Just made another reservation to bring the family there. Highly recommended!!!!
This is probably one of my favorite places in Boston. Best to have reservations even on weekdays. The food and cocktails are great here. Also live jazz is a plus! I always bring my out of townies here because I know they'll love the food, ambiance, and music. When I was here last weekend I had the soft shell crab tacos and it was AMAZING. I hope they have it when I go back! FYI their bathrooms are super cute, aka picture time in front of their mirrors :P
Review Source:This place certainly contributed to my overall enchantment with Boston's South End area.
Firstly, I should not that I went to dine and listen to music alone - and felt totally at ease in the environment.
Very friendly staff who were really accomodating to my requests.
The music - a romantic sounding Mexican band - for cinco de mayo - was lovely.
The beet soup was tasty and piecy, like a good borscht and a welcome relief from the usual veloute (creamy) style of vegetable that many restaurants serve.
The only thing that did not win me over was their signature honey beer.
This place totally lived up to the hype! Loved the ambiance, very eclectic bohemian. The seating is adorable. The hostesses, waitresses, and bartenders were all extremely friendly. And the food... omg the food was insaneeee.
My dining companion and i split an entree, two apps, and one side. We probably could have only ordered three apps we were so full by the end. Standouts were the halibut (creamy, flakey, with perfectly crispy skin), squid ink risotto (d.e.a.d.), and the steamed mussels (I will order these on every future visit). Â
I cannot WAIT to come back. This time around I only got the wine (a white from Georgia), but next time I am planning on trying out their delicious sounding cocktails. Great place if you want to impress a date! Or if your parents come to town and you want to get a delicious free meal from them.
This is my favorite brunch spot in Boston. The ambiance is nice and the live band is cool. I usually eat at the bar because there is always a long waiting line to get a table. Happily, this always ends up complementing the experience because the band is pretty close. Service is obviously fast and accommodating.
The Moroccan cigars are phyllo-spring rolls filled up with lamb. These are crunchy and taste good. The apple-wood smoked ham, asparagus and cheddar quiche is amazing... This is definitely my favorite here! It also comes with a salad and frites. Cocktails are also good.
Absolutely incredible!
We originally had made reservations to go to the beehive on the 19th of April but due to lockdown being in place that day, we called The Beehive and they were quick to rearrange the reservation for the next night.
We arrived to an already bustling atmosphere with a line up out the door and all but our seat taken in the restaurant. They set us up in the perfect location. We were over looking the area where the musicians played.
We had two great bottles of wine and found out they are supporting Ontario wines on their menu with a Baco Noir from Henry of Pelham!
We split the Calamari which I have to admit might just be the best calamari I've ever had in my entire life. unbelievable.
We also nibbled on the Moroccan rolls which were pretty damn delicious.
For dinner, (because we were filling up on apps and wine) we split an entree. The server was so great, she even pre separated out the dish so we didn't have to worry about doing that ourselves. We had a fish dish that was to die for.
Our server was one of the friendliest, outgoing, people that I have come in contact with in a while. We were quick to discuss wine and life and she was overall just the greatest.
This place has such a vibrant atmosphere and is a place not to be missed when touring the Boston core.
Absolutely brilliant.
I love the beehive. I love the atmosphere, the decor, the food, the brunch. I love the late weeknight live music. I love that the bands are often interactive, albeit typically to their chagrin.
My only (classy) complaint is that their cheapest caraffe of wine is not only $24 (2.5 glasses total), it's pretty terrible. Almost (but not quite) undrinkable. Their brunch is also more expensive than other restaurants in the neighborhood, but worth it given that the food is delish and listening to live jazz on sunday mornings makes me feel (slightly) hip.
I go to bed everyday wondering how I have never participated in Restaurant Week in Boston until this year (spring 2013). As an anxious and overly excited lad, I searched the Restaurant Week website high and low for the best option, and that's where I found The Beehive.
I went into this knowing I will spend a good chunk of change for supper, but it will be totally worth it. My expectations were pretty solid; I wanted a host of flavor, great service, and an overall exciting experience. Guys, I received all of them.
Food: 5 / 5
Service: 5 / 5
Scene / feel: 5 / 5
Because I feel awkward giving a restaurant all amazing feedback, the only thing I don't love about The Beehive are the small tables... but if that's my only complaint, that's pretty damn good.
I ordered the truffled potato and cheese pierogies as an appetizer which was the most amazing thing ever. If you get supper here and do not get this, I feel bad for you. The explosion of flavor was simply amazing.
As a main dish, I ordered the lamb and chicken moroccan couscous. As a guy who does not eat meat very much, this was amazing (AND HUGE!... be sure to come with a famished stomach). Finally, the dessert I ordered was carrot cake, which, again, was out of this world. I am deeply embarrassed that I was not part of the CPC (Clean Plate Club), but I gave it a valiant effort.
The service was great; our waitress was super cute, attentive, and personable. The live music, albeit a little loud, was the perfect touch (they come on at 8:00 p.m.)
Give The Beehive a try, you will not regret it.
Live jazz at a bar that's too cool for school. If that isn't an automatic sell, I don't know what is. Beehive can always be relied upon to set the scene.
The only food I've had was brunch, and it's as classy and classic as the genre of jazz. Unfortunately, it's best for solid staples - this menu lacks creativity, ironic for a house that hosts cohorts of artists.
The French Toast is an airy, thick-cut crust covered with Chantilly cream and berries, and the Eggs Shakshuka is the self-acclaimed "true Bohemian brunch". I don't know anything about Bohemians, but I never met a food culture I didn't like. Â Poached eggs and buttery polenta with tangy tomato sauce is totally fine by me.
Every culture needs a queen, and the Beehive provides a happy home for the hippies, the hipsters, and the just plain hip. Brunch isn't the best thing Beehive has to offer - setting the scene is where this South End staple shines.
I was taken to the Beehive for a date, we had a reservation on a Saturday at 8pm and had a table facing the entertainment. Â The table was Small and found the chairs to be uncomfortable. Â (I'm a hospitality designer so I'm overly aware of these things)
The staff was accommodating but didn't find them overly friendly. Â The food didn't blow me away either. Â My duck was most definitely undercooked and who wants to complain on a date, however the accoutrement's were good and desert was OK but again nothing to write home about.
It was very loud, but the design was interesting and unique. People watching was entertaining as well.
Been there done that no need to return unless its just for a quick drink.
I had been meaning to go here for a while, but just didn't. This all changed this weekend. I had dropped my mom off across the street at etant for a message for her birthday, and ended up heading here finally. They had a jazz brunch going on, which was very nice. I had been meaning to try the burger here for a long time, but since we were bar hopping for my moms bday, I didn't want to fill up to much, so my girlfriend and I ended up splitting it. The waitress/kitchen was so awesome they even cut it up out back and brought it out on 2 separate plates. Its something so small, and easy, but I love it when restaurants are nice enough to do it.
The burger itself was awesome. Cooked extremely well, and nice and juicy. The fries however, might have been the shinning piece of the plate. Seasoned to perfection, and so nice and crispy on the outside, they were delicious.
Now I'm just kicking myself for not going sooner.
Great brunch place in the South End. Â Try to get a seat upstairs because you can barely hear the live jazz if seated downstairs. Â
The food was unique and delicious. Â I had the steak omelette, which was very well done. Â The frites that came with were also very very very yummy. Â A friend had the French Toast, which she claimed was the best french toast she has ever had, a comment seconded by another friend who has no sweet tooth. Â I personally thought it was quite delicious but wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best. Â The short rib eggs benedict, on the other hand, was phenomenal. Â Flavorful, juicy...yum yum! Â The grilled cheese was also great. Â It comes with 2 very thick slices of bread (probably the same one they use for the french toast) that sandwich short ribs with some cheddar and fontina. Â Very flavorful and yummy.
Great ambiance for brunch, especially with groups.
I usually don't cross the river. My co-workers dragged me here, where one of them knows the chef (who apparently won some TV cooking show). They were able to accommodate our somewhat-large party with a few hours' advance notice despite being ridiculously busy. And wow, it was crowded (good lord they pack 'em in!), and I am a little confused because I associate bohemian with hippie and not hip-ster, and this was bohemian hipster, but no matter. The food was divine. The live jazz was lovely. The service was frighteningly good (when we [not at ALL drunkenly] spilled a glass of water not one but TWO people descended upon us seemingly before the first drop hit the table, whisking away our tablecloth, doling out extra napkins, and replacing everything like some sort of sleight-of-hand tag team with psychic powers).
I wasn't paying a dime since it was on the company, and definitely do not have the means to return often, but let me tell you, if I made more money than I needed I would hang out here all the time. And counsel people on how purposefully making themselves less attractive just doesn't make any sense. (What IS that, anyway?)
The Beehive is a great bar and restaurant in the heart of the South End. They offer excellent southern cuisine and a wide variety of tasty cocktails. However, the best part is the live music.
We have gone to the Beehive for Mardi Gras two years in a row now and hopefully we will be back next year too. The atmosphere on this holiday is fantastic. They always book a great live jazz band that fills the entire dining area and bar with their music. The crowd is lively and fun. The restaurant passes out beads, masks and other Mardi Gras trinkets to wear around. Waiters are dressed in costume and always have their face painted.
One thing we really appreciated was the bouncer they placed between the downstairs bar and the dinner tables. We were seated at a table on the edge of this division and the bouncer was extremely helpful in keeping people far enough away from our table so that we could enjoy our meal.
The food and drink specials for the night are always fantastic and while the drinks are a bit expensive they are definitely worth it. Overall, with an app, 2 entrees, 5 drinks and a half-bottle of champagne, the dinner was less than $200 which I thought was quite reasonable.
Braised short rib grilled cheese. Braised short rib grilled cheese. Braised short rib grilled cheese. Braised short rib grilled cheese. Braised short rib grilled cheese.
Also the pierogies. I order them every time I am there.
I enjoy their cocktails. I miss Frank. I love the live music. Great for brunch. Great for a romantic dinner. I love the Beehive.
I have never loved the food here - but it can be a fun place to go with the music often I'll go for a drink.
This time we were having a birthday party - with 15 people or so. Â We booked the table well in advance and told them we would be all meeting at the bar for an hour or so before. Â They manager was VERY pushy to get us to sit - and let me tell you it wasn't exactly a wildly busy evening...it was a Wednesday after all. We also were at 3 tables separated from one another...which was bizarre...and when we tried to pull them closer they yelled at us and pulled them apart saying the waiter needed to be able to get through. Because I guess passing plates wasn't an option. Â I did happen to make a snarky comment asking if it was a fire hazard because the path they cleared lead to a brick wall and the manager agreed...she was just CRAZY in my opinion. They then blocked said space with a champagne ice bucket anyway...
I also tried to secretly order a bottle of champagne to be brought to the birthday girl - pulled the manager aside around a corner and expressed that I wanted it simply poured into the birthday girls glass without asking so she could not fight me on it...she said okay and went to find the waiter. Â He then came over - showed us the bottle - asked who ordered it, and just basically did EXACTLY what I had been hoping he wouldn't. Â Communication fail.
This place has fallen from its status for me - I would NEVER book a party here myself due to the service.
