I went to Blue Moon Bagel Cafe on a whim as I was passing by and craving a real NY style bagel with a rasher. I was surprised at how large the space was inside, and how many types of items they have available. The line was long, but there are lots of people behind the counter ready to help you. I was there on a Sunday morning and was in and out in just a few minutes. I got the multigrain bagel with cream cheese to go and a chocolate mousse cupcake (couldn't resist the delicious looking pastry display - one of each please!).
The bagel had a lot of cream cheese on it that I ended up scraping off, so next time I'll ask for less. If you haven't tried it yet, eat a bagel with cream cheese and bacon on top. It's the best mix of creamy sweetness from the cream cheese and salty crunchiness from the bacon, all on a delicious bagel plate.
The chocolate mousse cupcake was really rich, too much to finish! It was packaged in a neat futuristic bubble packet so the beautifully decorated top was perfect when I got it home.
I am looking forward to going back to Blue Moon now that I know what it's like. I can't believe I waited so long to try it!
And even better, it's right next to one of the BEST Marshalls I've ever shopped.
Gotta give props to the new manager for taking the time to write me a lengthy explanation about problems that he identified and steps he took to move forward. Â To be 100% honest I haven't been back to Medfield but I will definitely stop back when I do. Â
Complete boss move by someone who cares about their business! Â GREAT TO SEE!
Thanks and best of luck!
I had a special order birthday cake made by Lainey which was incredible!  Not only was to delicious, but beautifully decorated.  Lainey called a few days before  i was scheduled to pick it up to ask if i wanted it earlier than scheduled due to a blizzard approaching. Never had anything other than  great food and service at Blue Moon, how about opening up another?!
Review Source:the name does not do this place justice!
fresh bagel-ry which tries its hand at many things (amazing fresh bread, great healthy cookies, lots of gluten-free options, fabulous soups, great sandwiches (mostly from the great bread)), great coffee -- and performs excellently on all. wow. their focaccia is among the tastiest and healthiest i've ever had.
i have not tried the bagels yet so cannot comment. in my opinion, non NYC-style bagels aren't really bagels. this review will be updated later on that note.
very popular joint, and well-deservedly so.
i did not have trouble with service, but it is possible that there might be issues. i tend not to rank on service unless it is absolutely flat-out mischarged/forgot about order for an hour terrible, so that's where i stand on that.
I think Blue Moon would be more accurately referred to as a bakery rather than a cafe. My first impression walking in the door was love at first sight. It smells heavenly. The wide variety of breads in the display case are beautiful. If you love breads, you'll be thrilled. But.... ordering a bagel on a weekend morning is hit or miss. About half of the teenagers behind the counter appear dazed and confused. Get the wrong one taking your order, and you'll be waiting a long time for your bagel... if it ever comes at all. It's also VERY overpriced, but this is in Medfield, a very affluent suburb, and always jammed with loyal townies.
I usually pass by Blue Moon and go to the Donut Express, about 100 yards West in the next plaza. Fresh home made donuts and pastries served fast for very short money, but no real seating.
I've been three times before writing a review. First time I got the Pesto Chicken. Took them forever to make it in the back and I just stood there waiting. They should have given me a ticket or something to go pay but instead just took my order and left. I didn't know what to do.
Second time I got the pesto chicken for my husband and told the kid I wanted a veggie sandwich as well. He said he would put the order in for the Pesto and be back to make the other. Never. Came. Back. For 12-15 min I waiting there during the lunch crush...when he finally came back there were no more everything bagels, which I had wanted. The lady in front of me took the last one. He apologized for forgetting me 80 times as he s-l-o-w-l-y made my sandwich. Pesto was pure grease and cold by the time I got it home because it had been sitting for so long.
I got the Cranberry Orange bread. AMAZING..but $14?!? Absolutely highway robbery.
This last time, again there were business process issues. Sandwiches were made and I waiting at the register for 5 min while the guy made someone else a coffee. There were no less than 5 other employees around the food stations not helping customers but none came to check me out.
They survive because of lack of competition. There is nothing else in Medfield or on 109 in the area that serves this market. They're busy by default despite their less than stellar service. Bagels are good...bread is good...but good products with sub par service doesn't win me over.
Amazing chai, great service, superb bread, and overall lovely atmosphere. Love the outside seating when it's a nice day out. The inside has a couple couches to sit at by the window, as well. Don't expect it to be Starbucks fast, though. Waiting the extra minute or two for a well-made drink is worth it.
Review Source:I used to go to Blue Moon as a kid and sadly have moved farther and farther away over time. Blue Moon is my gold standard for bagels. I've never had any better, even homemade (they are hard to make!). The bagels are dense but chewy and go well with the dozen or so flavors of cream cheese. Anywhere else I go I compare to Blue Moon. When I find myself back in the area I try to stop by. They also make a fantastic homemade black bean burger. There are lots of breads, soups, sandwiches in addition to bagels and they usually have a couple samples out to try. The owners are very friendly.
Review Source:I would give Blue Moon 10 stars if I could.
I grew up in the area and at one point stood on a corner wearing a Blue Moon placard while a friend wore a bagel costume, touting the wonderful pastries at the Moon. Yes, we were that cool, and yes, the bagels are that awesome.
Every time I go home I go to the Moon--for more than ten years now, every single time is consistently wonderful! I get into habits of ordering the same thing every time I go somewhere, and the Moon is no exception--but you have to give the place credit for doing the simplest thing (a plain bagel with cream cheese) well each and every time.
The only thing missing from the Moon is a long-distance catering services--whaddya say? Feel like shipping bagels to Texas?!
I can't say enough about this place. Â I would say it has the best coffee and muffins around, and the breakfast sandwiches on a bagel are second to none as well. Â
I read a few reviews here complaining about the service or bagels. Â To them I say boo hoo. Â I have always found the service to be outstanding, and for kids they do the best they can to move the busy lines along during weekends. Â Don't ask dumb questions when its busy pal, just step back and look before you order.
Although I do admit that if I wanted just a good bagel with cream cheese, there are better places to go (Lifes a bagel in Canton is one of them). Â But for baked goods like muffins or bread this place is awesome.
And like I said above, best coffee around as well. Â
The only negatives about this place is that it is located in a strip mall off 109 and it takes a few extra minutes to park and walk in if you are in a rush. Â But thats a very small price to pay for the goods and services here. Â Also a nice outdoor patio if you want to sit outside and eat too.
I live in NYC but I always make a stop at Blue Moon when I'm visiting my sister in MA. Â The bagels and breads are delicious. Â In the fall they have pumpkin bagels that are ... well .pumpkiney. Â If I can't get to MA, Dan, the owner, is gracious enough to mail them to me. Â I suggested he open a NYC branch. Â And in case you don't know, New Yorkers are very particular about our bagels.
Review Source:Consistently great for years now. I visit a few times a week and have never had a bad experience. The staff is mostly local kids but no problems there. I assume the people that complain are the same ones that it is hell to get behind in line. The ones that want to hold up the whole place while they sample and ask about the ingredients in everything. This place is can't miss in my book.
Review Source:I hope I'm not the only one who thinks of the band singing "Blue Moon" during the dance scene of Grease whenever they walk in here.
In any case, the store (not the song) is a nice little shop located adjacent to the overly large Shaw's. Starting out as kind of a one man show, its now grown into a rather well known shop. I'm hesitant to actually call it a true cafe, since they're more of a combination coffee, bagel, sandwich, bakery, and social scene then a true cafe.
Bagels are rather tasty and usually baked fresh, as are their wide selection of breads and pastries. They have a great gingerbread and do some really delicious seasonal items. They do custom sandwiches in store, and have some interested toppings that you may not normally find in your average sandwich shop (plus they give you a choice of carrots or pickles, yumm). Drinks, including bottled Nantucket Nectars and coffees (hot and cold), are available. Lots of seating, indoor and out, makes for a great meeting place or stopover from a ride. Prices are reasonable, and the line (which there always is) moves quickly.
My biggest gripe with this shop, despite the quality of their items, is their effort. It's not that they don't try hard enough, it's almost as if they try too hard. I've gone in multiple times and just asked for a sandwich on regular white bread, only to be told they don't offer that, but can give me one of ten different types of weird fancy artsy breads. The staff seems to be mostly (if not exclusively) high school students, though I've never had an issue with their service.
I would probably avoid at the prime breakfast and lunch times, just due to how busy they are, but they make a great spot to pick up something as a gift or to just get some treats for yourself.
My mocha latte was crappy, my bagel oozing cream cheese and the bagel itself was mediocre. And it was more expensive than better cafes in the city. Maybe it deserves a second shot -- it is a long standing Medfield business but I'm just not into you, Blue Moon Bagel. 3 stars because I think it can be better, but based on what I got I would give it a 2!
Review Source:I've only been in here a few times and I have to agree with the posters who said that the girls who work here are rude. Its actually a catch 22 because theyre bagels and cream cheese are really good. They have a good variety of bagels and theyre always warm and chewy. But all this is irrelevant since the attitudes of the workers there flat out sux..
God forbid you ask one of them a question, not only do they roll their eyes at you but they also give you a look of disgust. hey, dont be mad at me because you make $5.00 an hour serving bagels. I actually went back for a second time and same thing, sucky attitude. That place, even though the bagels are bomb, lost my business. I dont need a 16 year old girl giving me attitude because I asked a simple question. If they labeled their products then people wouldnt need to ask. I suggest going down the street to Millis to Bagels Best. The bagels are amazing and the staff is very friendly.
The food is consistently tasty, but the staff has a consistently bad attitude. Â Service is usually decent in the morning/early afternoon on weekdays during the school year, but the high school girls who work on weekends and in the summer are rude, rude, rude. Â Nancy G. hit the nail on the head. Â
They also don't label any of their baked goods, or have any other list of what's available. Â I'm tired of having some teenager roll her eyes at me when I point to something in the case and ask what it is. Â If answering questions from your customers is that much of a hardship, put up a sign so we don't have to ask.
My family and I have been regulars since this placed opened. The bagels and coffee are always fresh, samples galore, and the staff is super friendly (and..always remembers what we want) :). It's super busy on weekend mornings, but I did make the mistake of going to Panera after my PT one time in Newton and was super hungry..and was a huge mistake. The next week I drove home 20 min just to come here. Totally worth it, and best wishes to Dan & Linda--they're the best!
Review Source:My husband and I love this place. He's spoiled in that he grew up 20 minutes from Manhattan, so he knows from good bagels. They aren't New York bagels, but he doesn't seem to mind one bit! I'm a big fan of the Montreal bagel myself. Sandwiches are delicious, Â the breads are to die for, and the fruit tart was orgasmic. Not sure why people complain about the price and the service. Good ingredients aren't cheap, and the place is usually packed. It's worth it to me!
Review Source:The best Challah in the Boston area. The Freedman's have kept the great legacy of their family bakery going. Other baked goods are delicious as well. Rugalach that melt in your mouth. Everything so fresh. A bustling cafe - always busy. The suburbs need more independent places like this.
Review Source:do you like flavorless bagels? enjoy blue moon.
Consistently over-hyped and overrated....not much bang for the buck either...prices are higher than expected for a bagel shop.
Service isn't all that great....they have some of the best and brightest from Medfield high school working there...and that's troubling when they can't understand that I like my bagel toasted
I've lived near and patronized this cafe since it was opened! I've always gone for the croissants-- honestly they are the tastiest, flakiest things I've ever had. For my husband's birthday I got their chocolate cake...incredibly rich and melty and just incomparable to anything else.
Everything I've had there has tasted fresh and delicious. It is not a cheapo dunkin donuts competitor, this is the real deal and prices reflect that. They've proven to me that their products are worth it.
Can't get enough of this place!
Just the thought of their everything bagel with chive creme cheese is enough to make my mouth water. Â
I also loved their  BLT sandwich.  When you choose the type of bread you want they take this HUGE loaf off the shelves and cut it right in front of you.  Talk about fresh!!  Oh, and instead of a pickle on the side I had the choice of a handful of baby carrots.  Who else do you know that does that now, hmmm?
This place is much larger than I expected with tables, booths, and even comfy chairs and a couch. Â The variety is pretty amazing as well. Â
The samples on the counter also cannot be ignored. Â Who doesn't love to nibble on squares of blueberry bread?
I don't think I can say enough or recommend this place enough! Btw, after having the blueberry bread sample I just couldn't stop myself from buying a loaf!
It is a little pricey, but for a place that bakes everything fresh and shops at Whole Foods for their ingredients, I can't complain :)
Bakery, sandwiches, and coffee oh my.
Blue Moon succeeds where so many others fail; they actually have a good product! Â They just do things right all around ... great breads and bakery items fresh everyday, delicious sandwiches (esp. Cuban), and good tasting coffees on the stronger side.
Free WiFi, nice staff, pretty quick service.
Only things are that I hate the fluorescent lights, and it's a on the pricier side for cafes (I think the quality is worth it here).
Blue Moon is a consistent go-to breakfast place for me. Â The staff is very friendly and there always seems to be enough people working that even if the line is long, it goes quickly.
The bagels are never stale. Â I've never had the sandwiches, but the soups are very very good and served with a great bread roll. Â I see people coming in for bread, but I haven't yet gotten any, they sure smell good.
One of my favorite things about this place is that they always have samples out so you can try different breads or pastries; and, then if you are like me - get what you ALWAYS get, but it is certainly nice to try new things!
They have free wi-fi which has always been up - which is great. Â Two tables have plugs available (the booths on either side of the middle table area - which will make sense when you are there).
Great place, agree with others it could be cozier - but I'm always comfy.
The other morning, my boyfriend took me, all bleary-eyed and half asleep, to Blue Moon for some breakfast. Â I was crabby on the way over, but as soon as we stepped in and the smell of fresh bagels hit my nose, I was wide awake and suddenly STARVING. Â And I had no idea they made so many pastries! Â I was tempted to get a cheesecake and devour it right there. Â But I stuck to the everything bagel, while the boy got their Black Russian, which will be my go-to next time. Â Neither bagel was doused in cream cheese, a good thing in my book, and their coffee was fresh and delicious. Â The only thing that irked me was their decor - it wasn't very cozy or inviting for a place with such nice people and amazing cafe fare. Â The booths looked like something from McDonald's and the fluorescent lighting really does nothing for me at 8 in the morning.
Review Source:Siri Devta (see review below) introduced me to the yummy little Nutella-filled pastry bites that make you forget your own name and my life will NEVER EVER be the same.
The Blue Moon Bageleria is a pilgrimage for the urban dweller, but well worth the beautiful drive on the winding route 109. Â Keep your eyes peeled for the big Shaw's plaza, or else you will miss it because the tony suburbs have to keep their signage consistent (read: Â non-obnoxious and therefore non-prominent). Â
I brake for Blue Moon. Â
The bagels are delicious. Â The everything bagel is well-saturated in all of the poppy, salt, and garlic you can stand, unlike those bagels produced on the corporate chain assembly line with a small smattering of toppings. Â Pishaw!
Spring for the cream cheese there, too. Â It's whipped and lovely and makes the bagels taste even freshy freshier.
Big props also to the staff of BMB who were all men on deck, ready to help, and totally adept at counting out 13 for the baker's dozen. Â Well done, youngens.
Awesome place to sit and relax with family or friends, or simply grab a cup of coffee (nice selection) on the run. The bagels are delicious (be sure to try the Chocolate Chip and the Everything) and muffins and pasteries always fresh baked (on premises) and delicious. Â They have great home-made biscotti and there used to be a small sign near the biscotti pointing out that it is trans-fat free. Â Note to Blue Moon: I would highly recommend that you declare the shop 100% trans-fat free so we can enjoy these indulgences without some of the worry. Â I know that Linda, the owner, shops at Whole Foods and appreciates the importance of healthy ingredients.
If you've not tried Blue Moon since last year's remodeling, you need to go back. There are abundant tables now so the old practice of hovering for an open table on Sat or Sunday mornings is largely eliminated. You can relax, sip and enjoy.
While this is definitely the best coffee house for miles, I am giving it only a 4-star rating (I wish there was a 4-1/2!) at this time for one specific reason. My wife and I do not eat dairy. Â While the Blue Moon offers a range of tasty vegetarian and vegan treats, I have one more suggestion to make this a 5-star hands-down winner. Please add Silk Coffee Creamer (tastes much better than Soy milk for coffee) to the options at the coffee counter. Â Thanks to all and enjoy.
This is my favorite local place to have great food and cool iced coffee, of course the hot coffee is good also. Â They bake fresh bagels daily, my favorite the black russian bagel. Â You have to try it you will never go back to any other bagels. Â They have fresh breads also, I think I have brought home every one of them. Â Call ahead and ask when they are baking there Indian Bread because it is one of the breads when they bake it that sells out in the morning. Â Again this bread is a must have. They just expanded so more room inside but still have tables outside if you want to eat in the fresh air. Â The owner and staff are friendly and informative.
Review Source:I've been getting really tired of the saturday morning dunkin's run. The service in just about all of them sucks, and the bagles are just so-so. The iced coffee can be good, but i'd say a little more than half the time it comes out tasting like dishwater.
So, this morning i checked Yelp to see if i could cure myself of the vicious dunkin cycle. Blue Moon came up, so we went to check it out. The prior reviews are right on... this place has great bagels, baked goods & coffee. The coffee situation worried me a bit, but they have Seattle's best and it's quite good. Samples? You had me at hello.
This will be the new Saturday morning spot for bagels & coffee. Thanks, Yelpers.
OMG! Best place! Bakery, try to go on a Thursday, and check out the Indian Spice bread, there is nothing like it! Always a vegetarian option in soup. Best sandwiches ever.
You just have to make the trek yourself, words cannot do justice to the intoxicating smell of fresh baked goods.
My favorite weekend starts there, get a sandwich and take it a few miles down the road for a hike and a picnic.
This place has really good cinamon-sugar covered bagels. They are sticky, and taste wonderful. I also like their almond steamed milk. They have breakfast stuff (bagels, muffins, etc) as well as sandwiches, and coffee. There's indoor and outdoor seating here. And if you are lucky you will come on a day when they have free samples.
