For a beer nerd, this place is great (and I am a beer nerd!). The watermelon and blueberry beers were both excellent and great summer brews.
Not available before/after Red Sox games, but all other times during the summers are the double pale ale and the Rosemary IPA. Both were outstanding. I am still thinking about the Rosemary IPA four days later. Yummy.
Avoid before/after Sox games, unless you love wall-to-wall people.
Everything about this place is simply subpar.
Staff was rushed and difficult to locate. Our empty plates hung out on our tables for goodness knows how long before our waiter finally figured out that he's supposed to come by and ask if we'd like dessert.
Also, listen to momma and don't put your elbows on the table while you're here. They WILL remain stuck.
The food was forgettable at best.
Save the trip; fall somewhere else.
we used to love this place, but now - not so much.
the staff here is not trained and they say things that i would NEVER expect anyone who works in the service industry to feel *that* comfortable with me to say..
we waited 15min for our drink order to arrive and a food runner literally brought our dinners to the table at the same time, it was absurd.
servers will usually disappear while you're eating and have other people check on your table while they go outside and smoke cigarettes, so that when they finally do come back and you're waiting for your check, they smell like an ashtray.. it's disgusting.
after an appetizer came out stone cold and it went back to the kitchen, the manager brought out a new one and it was still cold and not cooked, apparently the oil was turned down and nothing was getting fried. i told everyone else at the table to eat their food and by the time it was sorted, i decided not to go for plate # 3. i was offered a free dessert for my trouble, since the people i was with had finished their food at that point. i didn't take the free dessert.
the flavored beer and seasonal favorites are not worth putting up with all the problems at this horrible location. we went this past week and they seem to be in the middle of a renovation, electrical sockets with no plate covers on the wall and one even under our table, in the booth we were sitting in. really ??
there used to be a giant wrought iron piece on the wall that was amazing on the brick walls, and now it's gone and the walls are just covered with cheap looking wood panels.
i don't know who took over this place but if i really felt i HAD to have beerworks i'd take the train to fenway or even go outside the city to salem or hingham just for a change, because this location is horrible.
i wish i could give them zero stars.
All in all not a great experience here I would say. Â 4 of us were here for lunch after an event. Â It was not overly busy at all, but it took forever to get everything, including a menu; we had to ask multiple times. Â Our server was not very pleasant or helpful, in one instance, she responded with a rude "What?" when she didn't hear one of our requests. Â They do have good beers (watermelon ale and blueberry ale are great!) but the over 20 minute wait each time we ordered did take away from the greatness of the beer. Â I ordered some chili, the tortilla chips were somewhat stale and chewy. Â Can't say I was overly impressed, but I would probably go back for the beer and try out the atmosphere again.
Review Source:Beer Works Watermelon Ale is my not so secret addiction. Â I pretty much live here June - August when it's on tap. Â It may sound strange, but trust me, it's the best thing ever.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the place year round. Â There's the Fenway Pale for your go-to pleasure and delicious Belgians in January. Â The only month I stay away is May - English brews are awful!
The food is eh. Â This is really more a bar than a restaurant. Â I do love their fried chicken sandwiches with bacon, but they're not exactly hard to find cuisine.
As the name suggests, it's all about the BEER.
I really just happened to stop in here for a beer. Â But in that time, I did appreciate what was going on here. Â
I'm not normally as huge a fan of brewpubs that brew their own beer. Â But that's just me. Â In this case, I think it fits here because you have so many other bars in this area serving all sorts of branded beer. Â This now becomes an alternate option. Â
I tried one of the English ales, which wasn't bad. Â Not my favorite, but I finished it off. Â Actually I was more impressed with my friend's selection of two fruit beers, the watermelon and the blueberry with real fruit floating in it. Â I probably would have enjoyed those more. Â
Oh well, you live and learn I suppose.
A strange place. Nice beer selection and good rotations with the seasons. Food is standard bar food and they recently changed their menu getting rid of some good burgers and pizzas. Most of the menu is solid if unspectacular. Daily pizza specials can be good and the rajun cajun is something you can't find at many chain places... The salmon burger was pretty tasteless and disappointing... Service can be pretty inconsistent, last week had a long wait time for food (about 40 minutes) with no explanation.
Review Source:I like not-crowded bars. I also like bright windows and not darkness in bars. What I like even more is day-time drinking. Therefore, me strolling into Boston Beer Works on a chilly winter weekday around noon-- I liked it!
The beer selection was too much for me to grasp, so I ordered a few different types til I found one I liked the best (I couldn't even tell you the names of them if I tried). Beer was good, prices were good. Typical beer place.
For food, we got the chicken cheese quesadilla as an appetizer and I was surprised at how much I liked it... I mean, usually tortilla and cheese can only so much to pique my taste buds. My boyfriend ordered the chicken and shrimp stir fry (NO idea on why he chose that on such a vast menu), and I ordered the "chowda"- perhaps an equally blasphemous idea considering I rarely get out to New England and I chose my chowder-right-of-passage from a beer establishment. Oh well, all tasted good.
Overall, nothing bad, yet nothing extraordinarily awesome. Definitely would come back again next time I'm in Boston though.
BBW is better than three, but not quite four stars.
Maybe the food would have swayed me, but then again, maybe not. I looked over the menu, but nothing stood out or caught my attention other than the prices. However, what did catch my attention was one of their locally made brews on tap: "Bunker Hill Blueberry Ale." It sounded different, yet refreshing.
Once I was finally able to put in my order at the bar (service was a little slow during a busy sports day), I was surprised to see what she put down in front of me: a pint of golden ale with a multitude of fresh blueberries floating throughout. Even better than looks, it tasted delicious! What a pleasant change of pace. Although I wanted to try something else while I was here, I ended up getting a second blueberry brew instead.
Aside from listening to the older guy next to me talk about his gastric bypass surgery and how he gets lit from just two beers, I tried to watch the remainder of the Celtics/Knicks game playing on the flat screens above the bar. Speaking of bar, it seemed abnormally small for such a huge space, but there are also plenty of tables throughout. I'm not sure what's on the second floor, but I assume more seating and another bar.
Like other bars in the area, its convenient location near TD Garden certainly helps business when the Bruins and Celtics are playing. Â 3.5 Stars.
I have never dined at this location (I have eaten at the Fenway location before), but I stopped here last night for a couple beers and pool. This bar has a fantastic location right near TD Garden, so I am sure it gets packed before and after a game. For a Saturday night, it wasn't overly crowded. There were still some people eating downstairs, but upstairs had a nice, large group of people hanging around talking and playing pool.
We ordered a few pitchers and grabbed a pool table over in the back area. $10/hour for pool is a standard price, and I applaud them for not price gouging on a busy night.
I do have to say, the one common trend I see at Beer Works is that the beer just isn't that great. They only sell their own, but I've often found it watery and lacking flavor. If someone has a good tip for a flavorful beer that I can have as a go-to, I'd be back here more often.
I see myself coming back to Boston Beer Works again in the future, whether it's this location or the one near Fenway, I just wish I could like the beer more to come back more often.
Came here for a few drinks before the Muse concert.
First off, door guy was a douche. He clearly hated his job and was not pleasant. Wasn't rude or anything, just a douche.
Now, the place itself is a pretty typical bar. Fair size, typical music, nothing special there.
The beer selection - incredible! I like wheat beers and they had WHEAT BEERS! They had like 4 on draft and crap loads in bottles. If you like fruity or sweet beer - this place is worth checking out. Didn't eat any food, but it looked pretty good.
Prices were fair.
And our bar tender, Lauren, was great. She was helpful, fun, pretty damn hot (she will cut you if you cross her! kinda gal) and nice. That's a surprising and great combo for a bar tender. Lauren, I salute you.
If I'm around there again, I'll likely visit for some frothy beverages.
My fiance and I typically come here after Bruins games. It's usually a good time - good food, good beer. We went a few months ago for lunch - it was freezing cold outside but the restaurant wasn't opening for another 10 minutes or so. The host was nice enough to let us in and give us a seat near the heater while they finished their staff meeting. We really appreciated it as the weather was particularly cold that day.
We went last night (4/8/13) after the Bruins game. I didn't have a great time and wanted to write a review. I ordered steak tips well-done, but they gave me a combination of medium and medium-rare. I'm not the type who usually complains or sends food back, but I just can't stomach the texture of rare meat. It took awhile to get our waiter's attention (he didn't bring out the food, somone else did - and he didn't come back to check on it.) I didn't see him or any other waiter anywhere for awhile. I finally saw him chatting with another employee (bartender, I believe) for awhile behind the bar; far enough away where I could not easily get his attention without yelling across the restaurant, which I was not going to do.
So he eventually comes back and sends the food back and it takes about 15 minutes to get a new meal. Meanwhile, my fiance is picking at his plate but not really eating his meal. He was just trying to be a nice guy and not eat in front of me while I'm starving, which means that his food was getting cold while I was waiting for a new meal. The waiter did offer me a free bowl of chower to tide me over, but I declined; I came there craving steak tips, not looking to fill up on chowder.
I think the thing that really bugged me was that when we got the bill, we were charged full price for both of our meals. I didn't think that was right. The service was very slow, my meal was under cooked, and my fiance ate a cold meal because he was just trying to be polite. Normally I would have said something, but at that point we had been there for a long time, I was tired and frustrated, and just wanted to leave instead of arguing about the bill.
My girlfriend and I were in the area and heard great things about Boston Beer Works, so we decided to kill a little time here.
We were greeted upon arrival, and we made uor way upstairs since it was a little less crowded there. We found two prime seats at the bar, and were greeted by the bartender. They didn't seem TOO busy, but I had no idea what was headed our way. About an hour or so after we arrived, the place ended up being completely packed. Some may see that as a bad thing, but if this many people love this place enough to deal with the crowd, then it HAS to be pretty good.
We eventually got some food, which was good. Despite being crowded, it didn't take long to get to us. To top it off, it tasted pretty good as well.
The staff was very helpful and nice overall, the facility was clean, and the whole experience was fantastic. Needless to say, we'll be returning here!
I've stopped in here a number of times after a Celtics game and I've always had a good time. The beers are pretty good, foods also good. I had a Back Bay IPA that was pretty good. I've had the blueberry beer in the past, and they're good. Just a little too sweet to drink for a night, maybe one or two.
What I really like about this place is the amount of space. Even after a game, waves of green crash in, and this place handles it. I like heading upstairs with all the pool tables.
Boston Beer Works is a great restaurant from its awesome beers to its great food. Always a large selection of craft brews on tap. The craft brews are exceptional and the prices are very cheap.
Our last visit was after a Bruins game and the place was PACKED. We were able to get right in and sit at the bar. The bartenders were awesome. Even though they were extremely busy, they made us feel as if we were the only one there.
The atmosphere inside is amazing. TONS of places to sit upstairs and down stairs and a huge bar. The food is great. Last stop in I got a Haddock sandwich which came with fries and was cooked perfectly and the fries were great. My fiancee got a grilled chicken salad which I stole a bite of and was very impressed.
If you enjoy the beers, they also sell their crafted beer by the door. I highly suggested anyone to stop in and enjoy the bar, food and service. A great place for anyone local or tourist!
The location is good - right next to the Garden to catch sportsfans and concert goers (and close to the North End for anyone who just can't stand another Italian dinner). The service is friendly and super efficient, and there is plenty of space. The only thing to complain about is the volume of the music; this is not a place to go if you want to have a conversation! Otherwise it's a solid spot.
Review Source:I would love to give this place a 5 but I wasn't the biggest fan of its layout. I don't mean this in a "I much prefer a hectagonal room over a square room" way, but in a "I don't like feeling cramped and caged" way." I can understand that they're trying to squeeze in as many people as possible but if I have the sudden urge to stretch my arms out, I don't wanna smack the person next to me.
Layout aside, I was super pleased with quantity and quality. I ordered a half-plate of nachos and was presented with a feast of guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream, and cheese. Oh man. I also stole a bit of my friend's Margherita Pizza. They had placed large tomato halves onto the pizza which was a little bizarre, but still tasty.
I suppose it also helps that this place introduced me to Backbay IPA which was perfectly crisp.
Service was great, too. The waitress checked in on us pretty often and not in an annoying, "are you done, yet" sorta way.
TL;DR - Great service and food. Avoid the cage.
It makes me sad to write this since I have been coming here for years, but it has gone downhill, but time. Went there before the mumford and sons concert and sat at the upstairs bar. First off I asked of they had any of the imperial esb left and the bartender said yes but only downstairs. Really? You couldn't get me one from down there? Â Disappointing indeed. Whatever happened to service?
Also we ordered the sliders and the boneless wings. They both took at least 45 minutes to arrive and when they did they were both Luke warm and boring. The sliders especially were flavorless and served with potato sticks of all things. Really? Potato sticks? Â
The beer is still okay, but compared to other options around the area for microbrew it is lacking.
Bottom line if you are looking for decent microbrew prior to an event, then this place will suffice, but don't expect to be wowed by the beer and certainly don't expect the food to be acceptable.
Oh Beerworks. I honestly don't know why I go here as loyally as I do. Maybe because the food is consistently good or because I enjoy the ever changing list of beers. I don't know, but I'm never unhappy when I leave this place. The service is rather inconsistent, but overall this place is my go-to if I'm not feeling like being an adventurous eater that day.
My biggest gripe is the parking. Parallel parking is the devil and so is having to feed a meter. If there's an event going on, I typically steer clear of this place since it's right next to the garden. Otherwise, it's fairly easy to find a spot (if you know how to park).
Beer Works is fantastic! This is my go-to spot if I am going to a game or concert at the Garden. Â More than just a place to get a beer, this joint serves up some great food too! The burgers are delicious! Who gets salad at a bar? You should if you go to Beer Works! They are huge and so tasty!
The Bunker Hill Blueberry beer is incredible! The real blueberries are a great touch! The watermelon is my absolute favorite beer...ever! I wish they had it all day, every day!
We went here after a tour of Fenway from a recommendation of one of the tour guides. When we walked in all I could do from not falling over from the horrible smell of yeast was to leave. I do not know if they were having a ventalation problem or if that is how this place always smells but it was bad news, so a word to the sensitive if smelling yeast is not your thing, and smelly bars bothers you then avoid this place.
Review Source:The is an excellent place to bring guests visiting Boston, especially if they enjoy beer. Â Boston beer works in both of its locations has an awesome selection of microbrews. The beers are belgian so they range from belgian wheats to belgian darker ales. Â Thats why this place has something for everyone.
My personal favorite it the Bunker Hill Blueberry Ale. The put fresh blueberries in this beer from Maine. This is the best blueberry beer I have ever had.
For snacks I have tried the beer works snack attach which includes roasted sweet and spicy beer nuts, warm soft pretzels with salt and pepper, and potato sticks. Pretty decent for bar snacks.
I have tried some of the other food like the sandwiches but cant specifically remember which ones. The burgers are really good. I do have to say the the food is pretty decent for pub food.
I will most certainly be bringing back more visitors to Boston Beer Works!
Crowded and loud, but all that is forgiven for the awesome blueberry beer floats. This isn't just your typical blueberry flavored beer, but they put nice heaping portions of blueberries in an already delicious beer all topped with a scoop of icecream. I don't like beer that much and I still find myself coming back for more. Check it out!!
Review Source:So I was a little hesitant to stop in here, since it would be a shame to waste money/time at a restaurant in Boston if it's not at least decent....you can't spike a football without hitting some sort of pub/brewery. Ask Gronk.
Anyways, I stopped in here with the significant other after a Celtics' game a couple of months ago (look, tickets aren't cheap, so preseason is the way to go!). It was probably around 10-10:30 at night, and we were looking for a late night snack before making the trek back....mostly to skip the post-game T traffic. I'm happy to say, it was really enjoyable. There were probably about 5 or 6 other people there, sitting at the bar, but we decided to grab a table...very chill and laid back, especially at that hour. So here's the breakdown:
Pizza: 4/5. I think we stuck to the plain cheese, and it was way more enjoyable than I was expecting. Like, I had to fight my guy for the last piece, which is usually something I concede. Who knew, right?
Beer/Wine: 3/5. I think I went with a standard white house, and the guy got some sort of beer. They have a cute wine set-up, but it wasn't anything special, not that I was expecting it to be.
Mud Pie: 5/5. YES PLEASE. I needed something sweet to drown my sorrows in...the C's lost, and the Pats barely pulled off a win. It's a little expensive at $6 for a dessert, but it was worth it. Delicious.
Service: 6/5. We had the sweetest waitress, even sweeter than dessert. She was sort of shy, overly nice, and had a slight sense of humor...which is how I would describe myself as well, so our exchanges were mostly smiles, laughs, and kind words. Can't beat that. :)
Overall....I'll definitely stop in again, especially before/after visiting the Garden.
My husband and I had our first date at the Fenway location of Boston Beer Works almost 10 years ago and I've been hitting up the Canal St. location for even longer than that. we go everytime we are back in town over the holidays and such for a Bunker Hill Blueberry Ale, and to try some of their other seasonal selections. This time around the Pumpkin Ale was quite yummy, and one can never go wrong with a cinnamon/sugar rimmed glass. I always love their fried pickles as well.
Review Source:I've been going to the Canal St. Beer Works for as long as I can remember before and after concerts and Bruins games. There are definitely places in the area with more charm if that's what you're looking for but you can't beat the beer selection at Beer Works. They currently are serving up their watermelon, which is delicious and served with a slice of watermelon on the side, there really isn't anything more refreshing on a summer night in the city.
The food is good too, I went last night with a group of friends- the buffalo shrimp and the nachos were great but my friends weren't really fans of the buffalo wings.
Go early, the place gets packed when there are events at the garden and the wait can be over an hour for a table. Â When we sat down they gave us four menus for 2 people...they should probably order some more!
Prices are fairly reasonable for the city and they offer patio seating as well.
And really, the Bunker Hill Blueberry with real blueberries is totally worth the trip!
We ate dinner at the Boston Beer Works. Our experience was outstanding!
While we hoped the bar would be Oakes for the Sox/Yankees game, it was surprisingly empty. We sat at the bar and ordered a couple beers and the bacon potato spring rolls. The spring rolls were ridiculously good.
We ordered fish and chips and the "Green Monster" chicken sandwich. The onion rings were the star of the entrees. The food was above average, but the reason for a 5 star score was obviously the beer.
Blueberry Ale- wife had this. Fruity but not overly sweet. A great beer.
Double pale ale- bitter like an IPA. Smooth and delicious.
Muddy River Porter- a really solid porter. Not too bitter, not too sweet. Nearly as good as a 512 Pecan Porter (but not quite).
Chocolate Strawberry Stout- a great desert beer. Creamy, fruity and subtle undertones of chocolate.
I'll definitely come back next time I am in Boston. Highly recommend!!!
If you are in Boson for beer than this should be one of your stops. This brewpub packs a bunch of craft brews from in-house on tap, and even has a rotating brew on cask for your sampling pleasure.
At $6 per four flight sample, it's a great value and gives you the opportunity to review the wonderful flavors of Boston Beer Works custom suds, or that of several other microbreweries that they keep on tap.
Where it gets only three stars is food and service. Food is ok, mediocre at best. It's standard pub fare, and as much as the beer is priced appropriately, the food is priced a little too highly to be a good place for a meal.
The service is also sketchy. depending on where your seated and what you order, it appears you can be downgraded from important client, to passerby, who can only get service if you go looking for the wait staff yourself.
Ultimately, if you like beer, this place is an excellent solution and should be part of your Boston trip but by no means your only stop.
We were at Boston Beer Works for a pre dinner drink and a snack.. since no games going on or would be on at TD Gardens... It was kind of quiet... no wait... no crowds... great experience for us!!
$6 for a Beer Flight of any 4 selections in the menu... Â Always enjoy beer tasting like that because I can really try out a variety of different brews in one seating.. Especially with Beer Works they only offers the ones that they brews...
We let our friendly waitress picked 8 different ones for us to try... what a fun experience!! I ended up drinking most of them aside from the fruity Blueberry one..which my friend enjoyed the most!
Buffalo Wings ($10) was quite good too... But why I eat Buffalo Wings again in Boston 2 days in a roll? I just want to drink Beer at a Brewery Pub!!
The good thing is this location of Boston Beer Works just 5 minute walk from my hotel... I wish I can go for a nightcap here every night !! :)
I ate here at 5:30pm before a Celtics game. Â It was just me and a friend. Â Seated immediately which was great. Â
I ordered a burger with sweet potato fries and well done (as I am pregnant and can't eat pink meat). Â My friend ordered a burger with avocado. Â Food came out relatively quick and my burger was raw inside and my friend was missing her avocado. Â No big deal as we were not in a hurry. Â
Less than 10 minutes later our food is brought back and my burger was cooked to perfection and my friend had her avocado. Â They did bring me regular fries with the burger and not sweet potato. Â No biggie. Â The server immediately brought out a side portion of the sweet potato fries (now I have plenty!).
The manager stopped by our table to apologize about the mix up and said that if we ordered dessert it would be on the house. Â We ordered the brownie sundae which was HUGE. Â Not sure if they doubled up the portion but my god we could never have finished it. Â It was delicious by the way.
All in all I am a fan of this place because the food is so good and so is the beer (even though I could not drink on this visit).
I would come back and highly recommend. Â Only giving 4 stars due to the mix up on the order.
FACT: Best pumpkin ale ever. Â
Another FACT: Best blueberry ale ever.
Oh yeah, fruit doesn't belong in beer? Â Really? Â Don't be a homophobe, the beer is delicious. Â Drinking amazing and unique beer won't deflate the gigantic tires on that ridiculous monster truck that you never take off road... Â ok? Â It's fine.
Moving on, this place is a must hit when attending a Bruins game. Â Also a great place to hit at Logan if your flight is cancelled. Â Even if your flight isn't cancelled, the beer is good. Â Actually, flight status has no effect on the tastiness of the beer. Â However, the number of beers has direct effect on the memory of how good the beer was. Â More=better.
The food is bar appropriate and tasty enough. Â I remember cheese fries and blue cheese sliders.
Lots of televisions on every wall. Â Smallish if I remember right.
Negative: no to go cups...
More Negative: can't get their beer at home...
This is a cute place - I bet it gets hopping before/after hockey games. We came in quite early on a Bruins game day so it was empty.
I ordered the Blueberry Ale and have to say, I wasn't crazy about it. It looks cool, though, with blueberries floating in it! But they kept hitting my teeth, or I'd choke on them as I took a big sip...maybe I just suck at drinking, haha.
Also I had a burger with fries, which was really quite tasty. It came with tomato although I asked for it without (boooo), but whatever, no big deal. The burger was big and juicy, and the fries were crispy and good.
Service was fine.
This seems like a fun place to rally before or after a game!
I'm going to start with easily the most annoying thing about this place - they won't sit you at your table unless you ENTIRE group is there. This can be a huge pain in the ass if you're trying to get some food before a C's or B's game. You're better off telling them that your party is only 2 people, but asking nicely for a table that seats 4 so your late friends can just jump right in.
Aside from this annoying seating policy I don't think there is anywhere better for good food and good beer before a game. The menu is great with the highlight for me being the Turkey Tips. The beers are always good and if you can't get a table there is an express line so you can walk right up to the bar and order without being up in people's business.
They're able to accommodate gluten allergies, but they don't have a special menu and options are limited. My wife always gets the sandwiches without the bread.
