Great bar overlooking the water. Place was pretty packed during late lunch/early dinner. Looked like mostly locals. Â Super helpful staff. Â Only had a shrimp cocktail and a couple beers. Â I nice find on the water that is not touristy at all. Â Good for families or bar goers. Â Would return to have a real meal.
Review Source:Awesome lobster roll! Â Reasonable prices and no wait time on a busy afternoon down in the North End. Â
Our group rattled off a bunch of restaurants recommended by our cab drivers and hotels and we were told they were all too touristy and they recommended the Boston Sail Loft instead.
We're glad we went! Â Definitely a fan!
I came here today for the first time and had a great time! I have friends who come here at night but I came to enjoy the water and nice weather. The one downside is I wish that Sail Loft would create a bigger deck outside w/tables and chairs but I appreciate the small deck w/standing room for when you have to wait for a table.
We were told it'd be 15-20 minutes and it was only $10! woo. We got 2 Moscow mules @ the bar and they were strong and only $6! I have never heard of a $6 drink in this part of Boston so that was exciting.
My friend and I both ordered the turkey club sandwich -- our go to food option -- and I had high expectations because it is advertised as "Boston's Best Turkey Club" which in my opinion, Is a strong statement! But, it was good. The turkey was clearly fresh and not deli meat and was nice and thick. Also, this was the neatest turkey club I have ever had! It didn't fall apart at all and was great. The best part? Their onion rings. You can sub onion rings for $1 and they were great. Unlike many restaurants, they actually have homemade onion rings which are so much healthier tasting and superior to frozen ones. 5 stars for the onion rings. It was nostalgic of the restaurant I worked in during high school.
Our waitress, Stephanie -- easy name to remember since it is mine! - was sweet. The waitresses here are young and cute. Stephanie was very cute and friendly. Also, she was pretty good. At one point my friend and I noticed how the waitresses seemed to literally be running around and they all had the same running gait. It was funny but I appreciate a place where the waitstaff knows how to hustle!
Overall, I had a great experience and will def go back when I want another nice, low key, affordable lunch on the water!
We stopped in on May 17 for lunch and had an absolutely wonderful meal. Â My dining companion and I ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc which was crisp and refreshing, and we split an order of calamari for an appetizer. Â They were perfectly cooked and tasted delightful.
For the main course, we each ordered the Half and Half - half fried clams and half fried scallops. Â So delicious. Â The scallops were melt in your mouth tender and the clams tasted so fresh.
The dining room was empty except for three other tables at 1:30 in the afternoon, and the setting on the pier with the boats in the water, clear blue skies, and a warm Boston afternoon made the whole experience absolutely amazing. Â We will definitely be back.
My husband and I got the fish and chips and the Cajun chicken tenders and shared them. The fish and chips are really good. Super light, crispy batter and really moist fish. The Cajun chicken tenders were very tasty as well. They also had a light, crunchy outside that was seasoned just right and the chicken was not dry like some places. We got a table right next to the window overlooking the water. The staff was friendly and attentive and the food was prompt and served piping hot. This restaurant is also within walking distance of the NE Aquarium, so if you're in the area for the aquarium or the cruise tours, definitely give this place a try.
Review Source:I've lived in Boston for years, and I can't believe I just found this place. I went for dinner on a Friday night, and it really wasn't too busy (a great alternative from the Faneuil crowd). There really aren't many restaurants on the water, so this is automatically a plus. Like other reviewers mentioned, the chowder was perfection. I also had the scallops with the Cajun spices which were so, so incredibly yummy. Perhaps the best scallops I've had in this city. Portions were also generous, and a pretty good deal for $20. I'll be happy to return!
Review Source:HORRIBLE BREAKFAST. I was here this past month.
I got over easy eggs, which were rubbery. I got corn beef that looked vomit!! I was so disgusted with it, i didn't even want to eat it.
It was like taking 25 dollars and throwing it down the drain. We ordered buffalo wings as an appetizer and they were just chicken fingers in hot sauce.
I am never going back here for food ever again.
and our server wasn't that attentive either. She could have been friendlier.
A North End staple, come here on Thursday-Saturday nights and you'll find Vineyard-Vines-and-Ralph-Lauren-clothed-college-Âfellows galore. Recently named one of Boston's douchiest bars, this place lives up to the title. However, the location is enticing being right on the water and the winter warmers are delicious. I suggest going during non-peak hours. The seafood is pretty average considering what they charge but have some good non-seafood pub food. However, this is a great place to congregate when it's snowy and cold out.
Review Source:My brother and I were visiting Boston for the day and we wanted a place that wasn't too touristy. I was glad we found the Sail Loft! They had delicious clam chowder and warm bread. My brother ordered the lobster with muscles. I got the appetizer of muscles to go with my soup. Their beer choices were ok with both local and domestic taps. Our server was very attentive as well.
Next time I am back in Boston I will stop by!
If you go to the sail loft, make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. This is primarily a local bar full of young professionals from the North End. Said professionals also enjoy getting completely smashed on Friday and Saturday nights. But everyone here tends to be very playful, friendly, and mature when intoxicated. Â
Make sure you order your drinks "tall". Which means they get served out of a 20 oz. pint glass instead of a high-ball glass. So it's almost twice the booze and it only costs $1 more.
This is a great place to throw down a bunch of drinks after a hectic week. Â You can bet your bottom dollar that everyone will be singing along to Journey on the Jukebox at last call.
Food-wise this place is nothing special. The one great deal is the twin lobsters for $31.95
I came here for a quick bite after work and before a basketball game with my co-workers. Â The setting was nice and the service was good. Â I ordered the club BLT which was pretty average overall. Â
I heard there is a decent crowd here over the weekend - I will have to try it out again later on at night!
Overall this is a decent place. Â There is the good, the bad, and the wierd.
Pros:
There is no cover. Â This is a huge pro because I am ethically opposed to paying a cover for the opportunity to be a patron. Â Also significant because I can seldom review places that charge a cover, as I do not generally go to such places.
They are removed from the faneul crowd. Â This is also a big pro because it is slightly outside the radius of the sticky people crowd. Â However, this is definately still the collar wearing crowd (more on that later).
There is an outside deck. Â Decks are great when you want a little air. Â Smokers also smoke on the deck. Â The ladies who smoke tend to be easier as a whole, so centralizing them on a small deck may make your job that much easier (pun intended). Â You can also order drinks from the deck through a sliding window, which is nice when the place busy and everyone is trying to push their way to the inside bar.
The staff is reasonable. Â It can get very busy on weekends, but the staff is not a collection of 18 year old meat heads on a power trip.
Cons:
They are not barfully responsible. Â There is not a single beer that is cheap for those times when you want to stay a while and relax. Â This is a big con.
The bathrooms are awful (at least the mens, can't speak for the womans). Â There is one stall (the floor usually covered in pee and/or diaherra), two urinals, and one sink, all right next to each other in the span of about 6 feet. Â It is a dong fest. Â It is impossible to use the sink without risking splash back from the urinal that is literally right next to you.
The layout of the place is awful. Â Before I go on I should mention that the physical location greatly limits any interior changes. Â The layout, and the bathrooms, probably can't be fixed where they are (it is a thin, narrow set up with the kitchen in the back). Â Anyway, it can be very difficult to get to the back when it is busy because the main corrider (only corrider actually) is crammed with people. Â The bar spans the central corrider, and of course, people form around the bar for easy access.
Having to push through people can also get uncomfortable and leads to unnecessary contact. Â This actually seems to be a pro for some of the north end skirts who come here. Â Sometimes they push their lady parts into you as they pass. Â I think this bar must attract women who like to do this because it happens frequently. Â
The male crowd is definately the collar wearing type, even popped (you will see it if you come here enough). Â They seem to be slightly older than the fanaul type, and as a mentioned seem to be a little less sticky, although creepy. Â They must also be aware of the women who come here with the bumping their lady parts into you as they pass fetish. Â The guys seem to intentionally raise their elbows into the lady parts that pass to sayisfy the girl's fetish, but then immediatly apologize after the girl has already passed. Â Yes, some of the girls who come here are a bit wierd with this fetish. Â And some of the guys are happy to oblige by assisting. Â The whole thing is a bit wierd to me. Â I wish they had a larger corrider, but what can you do.
Overall this place is reasonable, but I can't get over the lack of offering a single cheap beer, and the awful layout. Â However, the subtraction of 2 stars is primarily the lack of barful responsibility, there really isn't much space for a better layout. Â Although they really need to do something with the bathrooms.
I came here with a group of 12 on a Saturday night (which was a huge graduation weekend in Boston) and the service here was the most accommodating I've ever experienced. Not only is a group of 12 obnoxious because of its shear size, but we requested to have separate checks and the server was so friendly and helpful. She ensured that we were all able to pay how we wanted and pair up with whoever.
Ok, the food is tasty, but it's not the best clam chowder I've ever had. It was delicious, but not nearly enough clams to be called clam chowder. The chowder part was amazing though. And the potato skins were a heart attack on a plate, but incredibly delicious.
I absolutely love the location of this place and the atmosphere. Right on the water, in between the North End and Faneuil Hall and strikes a balance between dive-y and classy. My kind of place!
In my opinion, this is the best clam chowder in Boston! Â Delicious and creamy chowder will warm you up any day. Â I'd actually advise against ordering anything else, because you will probably just want more chowder.
The location is excellent right on the water and the drinks aren't priced horribly either.
A fun restaurant at the marina with a good energy and not horrible food.
The view is very nice and it's an easy walk from tourist central at Faneuil Hall. Â The food is so-so, the staff is very nice and service is okay - nothing extraordinary but not bad either. Â The bar is long and narrow so not a great place for a crowd to form but plenty of seating if you want to pull a stool up and enjoy. Â Good place for a family dinner and children. Â
All in all, it's A-Ok.
One of my favorite spots in the area!
The chill atmosphere & amazing clam chowder draw me back every time.
The Sail Loft is an awesome place to grab lunch or have a dinner date. The place is fairly small but cozy, the owner is really nice, & the juke box is a definite plus (I believe $1 for two songs) with both oldies and new tunes. Setting is pretty casual, and I'm always huge fan of a place with windows everywhere & being on the water. Â Its a close walk to Faneuil Hall but a lovely escape from the tourists.
So, FOOD.
++CLAM CHOWDER IS A MUST. its creamy, delicious, and just perfect. if you're a tourist, skip faneuil hall clam chowder. its expensive, and just subpar compared to the one at sail loft. even to go the clam chowder is amazing. ive been to sail loft at least three times & ive always gotten it & its never failed.
++Baked potato skins are the best I've ever had.
- As for the lobster roll, I'd pass. I don't know if it was just personal opinion but I wouldn't recommend it; granted, it was the first lobster roll i'd had in ages.
- Calamari. Yummy, but nothing I'd rave about. Its not as fried as other places I've been to but the squid is preferable.
+ Beer on tap was good.
Fresh seafood. Â Nice view. Anything that reminds me of Gloucester or Rockport while in the city earns an extra star.
I've been here for lunch a few times, never been here for drinks at night like some other reviewers. Â I've had the fish and chips, crab cake sandwich, and lobster. Â I love trying something new (as long as it's seafood) each time I go, and they have some great specials but nothing is especially inventive. Â The servers are have been friendly and accommodating (like when I brought a group of 12 in for lunch at work) and even brought over some free appetizers for us!
The loft is long and narrow, one side is full of windows opening up onto a deck, and the other side has no windows at all - depending on which way you're sitting for your meal the experience is different. Â It sort of defines the line between downtown and the North End, and I seem to always suggest this place whenever looking for a place to eat after work (in the warmer months). Â It's a nice staple to have in the area.
I love seafood, so I'm very happy to have this nice little spot nearby. The restaurant has a cozy casual feel to it, although it can get a little rowdier at night at the bar. So far, all of the food that I have ordered here has been great, and so has the service. One night they even reopened the kitchen just for us because we came late and wanted dinner!
Their clam chowder is possibly the best I have had in the city- super creamy and delicious. I usually order the fried platter (which comes with fried fish, french fries, fried oysters, fried clams, and fried scallops) for my meal- beware, you will not be able to finish it, but you will eat more than you should because it is tasty. My boyfriend has ordered the lobster roll and enjoyed it as well.
I would recommend this place if you are looking for a moderately priced lunch or dinner spot. Since it is right on the water, and has a ton of windows, you can eat while enjoying a great view, and possibly a beer from their nice selection at the bar.
Our last meal before leaving Boston, and just found this place by accident (as we always seem to do). Â The one thing we hadn't yet had and were dying to have were some lobsta rolls! Â And boy, did we find them!
Luckily it was on special that night (not a part of the normal menu) and we were more than pleased. Â Huge succulent pieces of lobster, overflowing on a toasty roll. Â We couldn't have asked for anything better. Â We of course tried a cup of the chowder and it was some of the best we had. Â Â
Great location (right on the water) and ambiance too. Â Loved this place.
I have lived in the north end now on and off for 6 years and I have come to love this watering hole:) My husband and I joined the boston sailing center this year, and the "sail" loft was a great go to at the end of a day on the water. They have a nice view of the water and boats and the seafood is great! I mostly started going here for drinks and never considered the food - until one night I discovered two great dishes here and have come back many times for each of them.
1. Seafood Portofino - glorious! It has all of my favorite ingredients; scallops, shrimp, garlic, pasta, and mushrooms.
2. Apple Crisp - The BEST I have ever had. It is so warm, gooey, perfect balance of sweet and tart, topped with vanilla ice cream.
I feel a little left out over never having been offered an oreo before, I will have to look into this for next time:)
Oh how the waterside situation instantly grants appeal. Tack on well drinks for $5.50 and you've got a totally viable, completely plausible end destination to your (blank)day festivities.
Did I mention the free Oreos? Nothing, I repeat, NOTHING replicates sheer ludicrousness like leaving the packed shack upon Friday night's closing to be greeted by a river of chocolate sandwich cookies tossed along the sidewalk of Boston's historic North End.
Black gold, Texas tea.
Postscript description: I've only been here to drink. They have food, sure, and I'll bet it's scrumptious. The table service, even amidst severely drunken revelry, is on point. Quite the decent spot, with only the lack of a real identity (do deck shoe dens really demand doormen?) maintaining the rating at a strong three.
Let me get the technicalities out of the way: the Sail Loft has good beers on draft, great seafood, an awesome location, a cool outdoor deck, great views, and the bartenders make the best damn dirty martini I've ever had. Â The crowd is super yuppy and the bar gets crowded on weekends.
Good, now that I got that out of the way I'm going to tell you all about my mushy sentimentality for this place, so you should probably quit reading about now.
The best date I ever had was on my 22nd birthday. Â The boy had driven up from New York to see me, my ex was coming to pick up stuff from my apartment, and he was pissed as hell at the new boy. Â Something about 'bro code,' I wouldn't know. Â So, we hid out in this bar all day. Â The ex could show up at any moment, and to avoid confrontation, we decided to just drink and talk about life, everything we had in common, dreams, life goals, all that sappy stuff. Â Sitting at the bar in front of the "all fancy women must check in with the captain before departure" sign was the most romantic place in the world at that point. Â I've never had the pleasure of feeling a connection with another person like that ever again. Â At that moment, it was like we were the only two people in the world -- especially when the booze got the best of us and the gratuitous makout session started. Â How sweet.
Thing is, the interior of this place is really sh***y. If it was not for a friend insisting I try it, I would have walked out. It looks like a run down dive bar in the middle of Nowhere, USA. At least it was clean. Bathrooms were questionable though. Ew.
Sat towards the back with a water view. Ordered the clam chowder which was reaaaaaally good and oh so perfect on such a cold day. It is just as photographed here. My husband ordered the seafood pasta diablo which surprised me given the appearance of this place and it was outstanding! I would have given it 3 stars but then I think of the food I had and I just cannot. Â I had a Stella beer mug on draft with a fried fish and chips. That was good as well. Very fresh and not too much batter on the outside of it. All in all, I do recommend this place, just don't expect the interior to impress you.
Fun place to eat, like the rest of Boston, the parking here sucks. You either have to take public transportation or pay for valet parking. The restaurant has a nice deck and outdoor seating, but since it was cold out, everyone was seated inside.
Good mix of people, both young and old, some families and some single. The clam chowder is excellent, and they add dill to it, which goes surprisingly well. I didn't like the lobster roll I ordered, I've had better. It was a tad bland and under seasoned. I did enjoy the other dishes, everyone else ordered something deep fried, which is generally pretty good any way. My mom's fish and chips was delicious. If I'm up in Boston again, I'll stop by just for the chowder alone.
Okay, read this and know I don't dig TV and if you sit in the front, you will have TV. I do like being on the water. This is a small place, strangely laid out.
Having spent time in the Pacific Northwest I crave a chowder that is more creative than what I get out here (okay beat me up). I like herbs, so I was psyched to come here.
Perhaps because it was a Sunday but the chowder was really, really, thick. And really, really, dilly. Rather like a chowder pudding-seriously.
We also had the fried clams, not bad, but given it was a Sunday, not as fresh as I have had them.
Has a local vibe, friendly staff, nice view if you snag a seat by the water. And I still seek the illusive chowder of my west coast dreams.
Last time I was here I was freezing my butt off. Fast forward to a beautiful autumn day with sailboats coming into dock, the Pat's game on TV and a comfortable seat at the bar. Service is always great with a friendly staff, great appetizers ( a bit on the heavy side but live fast die young) and a wonderful atmosphere.
Great place to hang out in the cold weather but even better when it is nice out. Love the smell of the salt air coming through the open windows.
Reasonable prices, good music, and huge portions of fresh seafood. I went to the Boston Sail Loft with my family last weekend after my Dad claimed it had the best clam chowder in Boston (how my Dad knew this I have yet to find out...).
I didn't order the soup but I did get one of the special cajun seafood combo plates. I was given a huge delicious plate of scallops, shrimp, haddock, and salmon with rice and vegetables (the seafood combo ceasar salad also sounded great). I liked that the Sail Loft was a nice escape from some of the fancier places on the waterfront and was reminiscent or an amazing dinner I had at the Barking Crab last summer. My Mom did say that her lobster was just a little bit too watery, but I know she enjoyed her bowl of Boston's best (?) clam chowder.
I absolutely detest drinking here/hanging out on a Thursday-Saturday night. Â If you're recently out of college, graduated from some new england liberal arts school, have family from duxbury, have a house on the vineyard, worship Vineyard Vines, or any combination of the above, you're going to be right at home. Â Anyone else is generally regarded (and sometimes made to feel) as an outsider or a doesn't-fit-in-er by the aforementioned people. Â A prime example is two friends who generally dressees on the ecclectic/bohemian side were asked by a random strange dude if they were lesbians. Â Bizarre.
HOWEVER, it's actually not a bad lunch spot. Â The sunight pours right in to this sparesely-decorated and small little venue, and you can get prime views of Atlantic Ave or the harbor. Â
The food...well, it's alright but not great. Â I generally feel like everything is overpriced for the portions and quality, but i guess you'll have that in this location. Â The cl am chowder is a must-try, though. Â It is thick, rich, creamy, made with dill, and comes with one large cracker rather than oyster crackers. Â VERY yummy.
They offer the standard fare of deep-fried seafood (tough to screw up) and salads. Â While anything deep-fried is OK by me, the salads are rather boring. Â They make their chicken salad with cranberries and walnuts, and though it's a bit dry (the chicken), it's a nice little flavor/texture combination.
I never really set out to eat here, but if I'm in the area and someone wants to go, I can always be satisfied with a bowl of chowder. Â Overall, it's a frustrating place to spend a night and don't expect a *really* tasty meal generally, but it's not awful.
This place feels as though you have found a hidden gem or four leaf clover...
The atmosphere is fun, the scenery is beautiful, and it has the best New England Clam Chowder in all of Boston.... and quite possibly the world...
The waitress aka the owner's daughter, EACH time I have come here has been a tad too chatty and kept coming up to us making small talk, not sure if she was trying to get a big tip or just corny with all of the jokes...
A place to meet some real Bostonians as well... oh and if you are not a Red Sox fan, you may want to skip this place during meals... I learned the hard way lol...
Food is cheap, the artwork is cool... and the bartender is some delicious eye candy for the ladies... Ah yes, and sit by the window to enjoy the scenery as well as the fishy smell of the water below you....
High Tables
Long Bar
Many locals and a hang out for Sailors. We saw a good group of them just hanging out there. They looked hot.
I had my first Black and Tan-it was good. I will have that next time as my first drink so that I can actually enjoy it before I get drunk.
Con: Can't hear the music at all. Â
Pro: Real chill and relaxing. Stay as long as you like and have a good time with friends kinda place.
The Skinny:
GF was totally impressed with the lobster and mussels for 20 bucks lunch special on Saturday (I think Sundays too). And if she was impressed, I was too.
Full story:
We walked by as i was showing a certain someone around my home city. Â She noticed the menu of lunch specials with one particularly being a 1.25 lb lobster with mussels for 20 bucks.
Since she promised herself she'd get lobster here, and that lobster costs $70 in SF according to her, she was amazed at  the deal. So we wandered the North End a bit, came back and she feasted and was totally pleased. I was surprised bc I normally think of this place as a drinks place (which most of the other reviews would confirm).
nice work!
Come here if you haven't been touched recently, and you're not too discriminating. Â
The Sail Loft is small, invariably crowded and full of single people who wish they weren't. Â The pros: Â Not dressy at all, cozy space, love the jukebox, tiny little deck overlooking the water (better than no deck at all). Â I've heard the food is good, and the potato skins I had (huge portions, by the way) were tasty, but when are potato skins ever really bad?
While the food has been creditedm the thriving bar scene is what seems to keep most heading to the Sail Loft. Â With inexpensive drinks, a youthful (but over 21) crowd, and rarely a line, this bar is a great alternative to Fanieul.
The dark, wood and nautical interior, along with unpretentious staff create the perfect atmosphere to take in the water-view and maybe a few too many drinks! Â
One of my favorite Boston bars!
