Love the food, the service is just OK. It's not bad, it wouldn't stop me from going back, but it's not great.
We go every once in a while, and the pizza and calzones are delicious. They also have really good drinks at a good price. It's just that they don't have a lot of people working on a weeknight and they are usually busy doing something, so it can be difficult to get their attention. That's the only thing that would keep me from totally raving about the place and recommending it without qualifications.
The Brown Jug is the GO-TO place for pizza and beer. The large cheese pizza with a pitcher of Beer is the best deal around. My favorite pizza here is the Milano. It is DELICIOUS! Seriously, check it out. All different meats and cheeses combined to perfection. I have never not liked something that I have ordered at The Jug.
The new place in The Home Depot Plaza is great. There is plenty of parking. Good bar atmosphere and I LOVE that they added tables for outside dining.
Full Disclosure: I am writing this while still on the high of another fantastic pepperoni and cherry peppers pizza.
I've lived in Boston for over 20 years and have had a chance to taste a lot of really good Boston pizza but I need to go ahead and say that Brown Jug is the best I've had hands down. Not only is it FANTASTIC thin crust pizza but it consistently delivers good pie. While I have several favorites in the area, I can't say that they deliver with the same level of consistency every time I visit. It's the Wade Boggs' of pizzas.
Case in point, I'm not a crust guy when I eat pizza. When I eat Brown Jug Pizza, I'm a crust guy. I'm also a crumb guy. I'm also a whatever-you-don't-finish guy. The ingredients are top notch and the formula is perfect.
On top of that, it's amazingly affordable and if you dine in, you can get some pizza and beer at an awesome low price.
Excuse me while I ride-out this pizza high.
I eat at the Brown Jug fairly frequently, another one of those places I found from the Phantom. If you like pizza, you will like the Brown Jug. This is in my opinion one of those great Bar/food places, kinda like New bridge (Chelsea) Floramo's (Chelsea) or Champions pub in Peabody. Good food Good drinks.
I really enjoy their pizzas, I truly love thin crust pizza. I have not had anything off the menu that I have been disappointed with. The only thing this place needs to change ASAP, is that they give you salad dressing that comes in those plastic packets. Come on guys, don't you know, what makes a good foody bar, it the salad dressing, look at Monty's in Lynn, Flaramos exc. Lets get it together and drop the plastic packets and work on a house home made dressing. This is a must
Outside of that, I really enjoy this place, and defiantly recommend it.
Review based on Take out only
VERY disappointed. new to the Chelsea area i'm searching for a takeout spot, or really any restaurant that is decent. this missed the mark completely. In all fairness, the positive reviews seem to be for the pizza. So I'll give this place one more shot for the pizza and update.
Detail:
Of the four orders,- two wraps, a salad, and a calzone, only one person was satisfied  (ceasar wrap)
-the fries for the wrap were WAY too salty to the point that they weren't enjoyable.
-The calzone had little to no mozzarella cheese. it literally tasted like crust and chicken. and the buffalo sauce was not good.
- buff chicken wrap -the sauve was not at all tasty. not enough chicken in it, and way too much blue cheese.
grilled chx salad- the chicken was rubbery and cold.It tasted like prepackaged chicken strips. Â they also forgot to give me dressing.
The brown jug has been around for years !
They moved their location over here to Chelsea plaza and it's the best decision they Eva made !
So clean , the old place needed work , but the way they set up is with the bar side and new dinning room is great , also looks like they have a set up outside in summer ,, will have to make a trip back to check that out ,
But their pizza is still one of the best thin crust around great flavour we ordered pepper & onions it was loaded !!
Also when you check in on yelp we got chicken wing as an appetiser for free , as a yelp deal !! Â Â Â They are amazing !! We decided on buffalo style ,,
Not to many places offer pizza and a pitcher of beer for under $20 dollars !!!
Server was very good considering it was very busy !! They had quite a few birthday party's going on ,,
We will be back to try their pizza again new FaVOrAtE for pizza !!
And love the new location for parking much better !!
My first and only life threatening experience at this eatery/death trap! Our order of boneless buffalo tenders nearly killed us. Â When we cut the tender open the center was literally RAW the entire length. Â Fortunately this was noticed before anyone ate one. Â The waitress took the dish back with an "oh sorry "(lame excuse)then came back and tried to say it was only the one. Like that was comforting. Â Neither the chef nor manager had the decency to come apologize for jeopardizing my family's health.
They didn't even comp the drinks or the replacements they sent out.
EAT HERE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great...and I mean GREAT....thin crust pizza. Perfect sauce, cheese and seasoning. Strongly dislike the new location/atmosphere. Loved the "diviness" of the old location. We used to stop at the old location for some pizza and beer before heading to Fenway. It was the PERFECT hole in the wall dive bar....right down to the hole in the men's room door. Yuppies stayed away because they were scared...which left the place to the REAL customers. I went to new location on a Friday night (excited about the improved parking situation) and there was a DJ and a strobe light...will not be "dining in" again anytime soon. If it ain't broke don't fix it!
I guess all I am left with is stories of the pizza place that ONLY offered pizza and calzones...served on paper plates with plastic utensils. It had character, and I miss it.
Here it is, the best pizza I've ever had.
The pizza is a little salty, but still great. The crust is nice and crunchy when you bite into it. The cheese has a nice seasoning to it. Everytime I bite into the cheese, it just gives off flavor. This helps give it a distinctive flavor. That's what I look for in any food. The sauce just might be the best of any pizza. It's crazy good. The jug also has a good deal. If you buy three pizzas, you get one free cheese pizza. I was happy to see The Brown Jug on Phantom Gourmet recently. It definetly deserved to be on their.
Great thin crust pizza.
My sister, husband and I split a Greek white pizza which had sun dried tomatoes, feta, olives and spinach. It was delicious. They only have one size for their pizza and the size seemed perfect for 3 people.
It looks like they have some pretty sweet deals. You can get a pitcher of beer and cheese pizza for $15.
Our waitress was super friendly too. Loved it.
I'm just giving 4 stars for the pepperoni pie. Â Not that anything else was bad, but that's all I had. Â And I had it take out - so my review doesn't reflect the atmosphere, wait staff, etc., Â just the pizza.
And the pizza was very, very good thin crust. Â Better than I expected from a place I hadn't heard of. Â Almost Santarpio's good (5 stars), but the crust wasn't quite as crispy as I like it. Â Â But it was a better pizza then you get at 95% of the places around Boston. Â Well done. Â I'll be back.
Went one Saturday afternoon after seeing it on Phantom. We sat at the bar and had GREAT service and drinks. Took the pizzas home and found them very soggy and underdone but thought they might have been overwhelmed because we wern't the only ones who were there had seen the show. We thought we would try it again because we really liked the place and the bartender was really on her game. We went on a Friday about 4:00pm and had the bartender from hell!! She was RUDE and cocky, Â she must be a relative because no would put up with her attuide. My husband was so appauld he tried to order our food to go from the take out girl when the bartender came out and confronted him!!
PS I am a Rest. Mgr.
WTF.
We were going to Suffolk Downs and I Yelped a place to try.  Four stars on fifty reviews, impressive.
  Ummm.......no.
  The service was wicked slow.
The buffalo fingers were Barber's chicken right out of the bag, doused with frank's wing sauce, nothing house made, mailed in.  Why even go out for mediocre crap like this ?  I can do that at home and swill Natty Lights.
My calzone was BURNT.  I know they don't have a Chef Ramsey, last eyes on, but come on, the cook sent this out, and then another person carried it out ?  Would you serve this to your signifigant other ?  I don't think so.  Where is your pride ?
The turkey club was also mailed in.
  The draft selection were sparse.
When I Yelp "Check in"d, it said I could have a free app of wings, which I did ask for, and we sat with the bill ( which did mention these free wings ) for TWENTY MINUTES before we got up and left.  As we did, the waitress yelled out " Thank you" as we walked out the door, not " Those wings will be right up."  She didn't even remember.
I say again, if you have not read my other reviews, I am a good tipper, so that is not an issue.  They do not have it going on here.
The booth chairs were extremely uncomfortable, made us sit ramrod straight up..
Very disappointed.  Really Yelpers, a Four ?
My friend and I were looking to meet up for some beers and food, and I came across The Brown Jug on Yelp while I was looking for a good pizza and beer joint in the Chelsea-Saugus-Revere area. I don't normally dine in Chelsea as I currently live in Beverly and work in Woburn. My friend works in Weston and lives in Medford. I'm not sure the Chelsea location was best, but I am thankful for the opportunity to try this place out. If you have read some of my previous postings, you would know that I am a pizza and beer fanatic, so the Jug just made sense. We weren't looking to spend a lot of money either, so that gave it additional appeal.
Getting to the Jug was an experience in itself as the address listed here, on their website, and everywhere else is correct, but both Google and MapQuest still direct you to their old location. Only their website has a map of their new location, but that isn't very helpful either. I had to call them and get specific directions from the very helpful woman who had answered the phone.
Upon entering inside, I immediately trotted over to the bar area and grabbed two seats at the bar. The area is very spacious with the lengthy bar, lots of pub tables, and a lot of new flat screen TVs everywhere. They had the usual standard beer taps and I was hoping to do their pitcher-of-beer-and-pizza special for $15, but you can only choose Bud, Bud Light, and Coors Light beers. My friend and I passed.
We first shared a basket of their seasoned fries, which were plentiful and surprisingly very tasteful for what appeared to be only salt, pepper, and garlic powder sprinkled on them. Next we shared two pizzas with plain and veggie toppings (my friend is a vegetarian). The pizzas come in one size (14" I believe), cut into 6 slices, and they were light, crispy, and had a perfect amount of cheese and fresh tomato sauce. The toppings were also extremely fresh and delicious. This was very good pizza.
I highly recommend trying the Jug if you are in the area looking for some good pub food and pizza, cheap beer, and to catch some sports. They're also close enough to the Showcase cinema in Revere if you want to catch a flick.
I'm not sure if I've written a review already or not. I went to a place called the New Brown Jug several years ago in Chelsea and got a great deal on a pizza and a pitcher of beer. Recently I went to this place, in Revere, called the Brown Jug where I got a great deal on a pizza and pitcher of beer. So, I'm confused if this is the new, New Brown Jug or the new Brown Jug or the new, old New Brown Jug....
Regardless all the the pizza was great, the beer was reasonable, it was far more welcoming then the Chelsea version. Service was great...until it was time to pay and our server disappeared for, no lie, 25 minutes. Kind of ruined a great night of pizza and beer but the food held up well enough I still gave it 4 stars
Pizza wasnt as great as I remember it, but of course the beer might have been a factor back then... It was VERY good, dont get me wrong...
The cheese was good, almost no crust cheese everywhere which was great.
The Mushroom & Onion had maybe 3 Mushrooms... Im a huge Veggie & Toppings Whore so I want them to be there... They were almost non-existent... I get that the crust is soo thin & maybe couldnt hold the excess veggies, but still loses a star for me!
Saw this place on GrubHub so I decided to give it a try. Tonight I ordered the 2 pizza & wings special. I ordered a plain pizza and buffalo chicken pizza, with buffalo wings. I also ordered a side of sweet potato fries. Delivery was pretty quick, 30 minutes faster than they estimated.
I opened the wings and I was pretty disappointed. There were like 5.5 wings, nothing special just regular baked chicken with a side of bbq sauce. This is not what I ordered. I could have sworn I asked for buffalo sauce. Well I'm sure that I did actually. In any event, these wings weren't anything to rave about.
The sweet potato fries were amazing. Simple and tasty. The plain pizza was really good, the sauce taste so fresh and a little sweet. The buffalo chicken pizza was great too! There were generous amounts of chicken on each slice. I love the way the crust tastes, by far the best pizza I've had since living out here.
I will certainly order from here again. But I plan to stay away from the wings.
Having been to the old New Brown Jug on a couple of occasions, I was more than excited when they moved to the new location in the up-and-coming Home Depot shopping plaza. I could now get their fantastic thin-crust pizza and beer combo without running the risk of unwittingly getting mugged or pregnant. (I kid.)
The waitstaff has always been more than pleasant and the pizza is fantastic. The prices are unbeatable, and while not fancy, the new place is clean and comfortable. They have some flat-screens on which to watch the game, if you so choose, and some nights there's even live, local music in the bar.
My man-friend and I like to hit this place up for a cheap pitcher and pie, which costs less than $15, unheard of in Boston. If you haven't stopped by the new-old-New Brown Jug, now just The Brown Jug (guess the new-news cancel each other out?), get on down there. You might not be transcended, but you'll be contented.
If I didn't already live in Chelsea, I'd seriously have to consider moving here for this pizza. Â This pizza is the best pizza I've had in the Boston Area hands down. Â Santarpio's, Bucchieri's, I'm sorry but the Jug has beaten you. Â Their white pizza with ricotta and eggplant is to die for - the crust - closest I've come to Napoli style pizza and I'm talking Naples, Italy, NOT Naples, Maine. Â Free delivery.
Review Source:The new location (the former being behind Russo's Tux Shop) still gets a 4/10 on the sketch scale in my book; the bar area was still kinda creepy on a Saturday afternoon. Â But still a marked improvement over the 11/10 sketch the previous place had. Â
Yeah, prices went up, but the pizza seems to still be the same. Â And the pizza boxes are actually made out of cardboard now, not that pretty-much-waxpaper containers they used to have. Â It's nice to be able to do carry-out without grease dripping straight through the box.
The pizza is ok, but it's the crust that sets it apart from the rest. Â I noticed "double-crust" on the menu for a couple dollars more -- that's probably the way to go.
I've never been to the old location, but I heard a few weeks ago that they moved to the old Pollo Loco location and I knew I had to try it out! So, the fiance and I stopped by here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised.
Now, he grew up going to the old location on a regular basis (before it became sketchy, apparently), and always raved to me about the pizza. We got their cheese pizza and pitcher of beer special. It was something like $14 or $15, which is a great deal! The new location is very nice, but not overly nice. Benches and tables with country-looking tablecloths line the restaurant, and on the other side, there is a bar. A few flatscreen TVs are strewn about the walls as well. Our waitress never ended up giving us any menus, which was disappointing, because I wanted to see what else they had besides pizza. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to save that for a future trip. We were here on a mission, and that mission was pizza.
The pizza was very very good -- better than the Santarpio's we had the week before. The crust was thin and crisp. The sauce was sweet but also tart, and it had the perfect amount of cheese and not too much grease. The crust was so crispy that the pizza slice couldn't even be folded in half. But, the pizza is on the smaller side (good for two people, but probably not enough for three since there are only six slices), so you don't need to fold the slice at all if you don't want to. It was piping hot and served very quickly. I honestly think it took us longer to get our drinks than it did the pizza.
Given its service, location and prices, I'm sure we'll be back here again soon to have more pizza and try out some of their other menu items.
When I go back east this is a must have. Awesome pizza!!! I wish I was in MA to enjoy it. This place has such tasty goodness and lots of memories for me. I enjoyed it as a child and an adult, now I'm living in Los Angeles envious of all you New Englanders who get to enjoy this amazing pizza. Oh you have no idea what pizza hell I've been living in over here on the West Coast. Anyway if you haven't tried it YOU MUST and please have a slice for me. I gave it 5 stars based on the pizza not the location. This place is what it is, a little hole in the wall with great pizza, you go there for that not to be wined and dined.
Review Source:Just moved here from Chicago and arrived pretty late. We decided to go out and get a quick bite. Where did we end up, The New Brown Jug. I was more than a little hesitant when I walked in at 10:00pm at night to grab a bite with my husband. It is not in the best area, dark inside, and everyone turned to look at us when we walked in. Except no one said a word. So we roamed around for a couple minutes till a waitress finally approached us.
Note: This is definately a NO Frills place. Here was my immediate facebook post:
Just walked into a somewhat shady looking pizza joint. We asked what was faster to make pizza or a calzone, our waitress answered "beer". John asked for an ice tea, our waitress smiled and said "long island ice tea right?" They don't have.... ice tea. There are no non-alcoholic drinks on the menu and only one size pizzas. A pizza and a pitcher of beer $14!
Well ... I must say after we relaxed got our alcoholic drinks and filled our hungry bellies with their pizza. I am a HUGE fan! The pizza was thin, crisp, and very delicious. We were both surprisely and happily impressed. Our waitress was actually quite nice with a bit of New England sarcasm and service was great once we sat down.
I have since just ordered delivery and skipped going in, but I am a huge fan of the pizza and the calzones are great! Definately on my go to place for great pizza!
BEST PIZZA IN MA! Â
I don't like the Bar, the clientale, the location - but if I can give this place 6 stars I would because the pizza is that GOOD. Â My mouth is actually watering right now thinking about the pizza there. Â When I go I usually buy an extra pizza so I can eat it the next day too. Â I can't say enough about the pizza there.
As other reviews stated definetly a dive bar...a place I wouldnt dare enter...but for a great slice of pizza...in I went.
I ordered the vegetarian thin crust based on the thin cruste reviews. Â Eggplant, Olives, Broccoli, Onions, Green Peppers was the toppings.
I love eggplant...it was the breaded kinda. Â Broccoli is a must on any veggie pizza...this broccoli was shredded??? Â kinda like the crumbs at the bottom of a bag of frozen broccoli. Â Not what I was looking for but ok.
So the veggies arent fresh and the toppings were not very well disbursed. It could have been a little more crispy for a thin crust. Pizzas are $12.50 but there is a $15 minimum dilivery. Â Nothing else on the menu but pizza and calzones. Â
Overall I think it was an "OK" pizza...would I go again?? I doubt it.
One of the best greasy spoon-dive bar combos around Boston. Â I end up here often in the summer because I play baseball at Chelsea High semi regularly. Â Maybe I'm biased because the post-industrial decay of Chelsea inspires a perverse longing for the city of my formative years; New Bedford. Â
They make a delicious thin crust pizza that is hella cheap.  I believe its something like $8 for a pitcher of domestic and a cheese pizza.  After destroying a team full of Uncle Ricos  there isn't much better to wash away the taste of victory.
Okay, so I really didn't even want to go inside when I first heard about this place. There are bars on the limited windows and it just looks really run down. However, everyone in our waterfront hood was raving about this pizza so inside I ventured.
I will not eat pizza from anywhere else ever again! They have, hands down, the best pizza. Sometimes I ask for extra sauce because it can be a little dry for me, but even dry (by my standards) it's still SO good.
One of the most respectable Cheese pizzas in the city and beyond. Â An amalgamation of thin, crispy crust, marinara sauce, blended cheeses. Â They offer filling calzones too but, the pizza is where it's at. Â Last I was in there (years & years ago) the interior was really run down, and a lot of the clientele looked like they hadn't seen a good day in years. Sorta like Santarpios in East Boston, but with a darker interior. Â I'm a little too "refined" for re-entry. Â So, I get delivery. Â Cash only.
Review Source:I'm not sure if the New Brown Jug received a limited edition shipment of Coors Light's, but they were simply outstanding, and cheap, $2.95 a bottle, or $2 a pint. Â The clientel were friendly and fans of acid washed jeans, man-pris, and flip flops. Â While our crew certainly didn't fit in, we were accepted nonetheless. Â We were given a free Guiness and a quick peep show of some man's junk. Â I can't explain either, but having not seen the junk, I rate the New Brown Jug a 4 out of 5. Â Had I not felt like I was the kid in the corner of the final seen of the Blair Witch Project when I tested out the restroom, I would have awarded it a perfect 5 out of 5.
Review Source:This is the Oldest Pizza Place around, Â that I know.
They haven't changed a thing.  The booth's are the old fashioned  wood high backs,  very rustic.
You get paper plates and forks, knives. Â
You can get the Special which is a Cheese Pizza and Pitcher of beer.
They also serve Calzones that are scumptious. Â Â
We get one of each but that's it for the Menu.
Pizza and Calzone. Â Very reasonably priced.
We Love the Jug. :-}
