This is my go to spot on my visits to the area, the staff is extremely friendly and the food is amazing. Â I've had just about everything on the menu and never had a bad dish. Â The BBQ pizza and the French onion soup or delicious! Â The place is run by the owner and his spouse and even thou I visit the area maybe five times a year they make it their business to get to know their customers and treat everyone like friends! Â Highly recommend this place!
Review Source:After a 10 hour drive, my wife and I were pretty hungry for some hearty food.
It didn't feel like there were many choices at the time, but when you're that hungry, you're just grumpy. So we pretty much decided to go here because it was closest to us.
We were greeted by Victoria, our friendly waitress. She informed us what foods they were known for, which things were made from scratch, etc. She was very helpful and polite. She even waited for me to come back after I left my cell phone on the table and proceeded to drive away! Anyways...
I got the fish and chips, and my wife got a BBQ platter. The fish was fresh and delicious. You could tell it wasn't a box of frozen cod nuggets. The breading was crispy and just right. They had homemade tartar sauce as well, which had a really refreshing dill taste to it.
My wife gets full really fast, but I think she enjoyed her experience pretty well too.
We ordered the Irish curry fries as well, which were amazing. Don't forget to order those.
In summary, this restaurant met our expectations in every way. We wanted good, hearty comfort food, and friendly service, and that's exactly what we got. If you're looking for some warm, feelgood food, this place has it.
I eat here often enough because I live nearby. It is pretty good especially the steak and also for chicken pot pie & curry chicken. Â Whatever you do don't order the fish. For some reason they think salmon is supposed to be overcooked and dry. Â They do a good job on the burgers and pizza as well. Â The bar is a lot of fun. The bartender is really nice, Â he and his wife own the place. She is also really nice. The waitstaff are ok one of the waitresses did admonish me once for actually finishing my dinner "I would never have been able to eat all that" is what she said. I think she just wasn't thinking....I of course could've cared less and ordered their dessert which by the way was fantastic. Some sort of traditional Irish desert with digestive biscuits, caramel, chocolate syrup, fresh whipped cream and strawberries (I declined the banana part).
Review Source:To put it simply, this place was bad.
The waitstaff was rude. Our party was split up, despite having the ability to seat us all at another table large enough to seat us all. When asked why we couldn't be seated all at one table, we were ignored.
We were sat at 8:30 pm ordered at 8:35 then got our food at 9:30. Not once did anyone speak to us in between. So, the food took around an hour to arrive despite the dining area being nearly empty. The food was cold on arrival. It had arrived after several smaller parties who had been seated after us had already received their food. It really didn't make any sense at all.
I wouldn't want to go again because while there was an "eclectic menu" it was really just a hodge-podge of mediocre food. Maybe some items would be substantially better, but if I was forced into going again, it would only be for appetizers and the bar.
It appears that as of late, I am unable to write a review without forcing some tidbit of personal information upon the readers. Well... this one isn't any different.
The first time I stopped in to Characters was when we were returning from a hike at Harriman State Park. We arrived at the train station and literally saw the train pulling away and the next one wouldn't come for another two hours. This misstep with luck was quickly turned around when we wandered in to an average looking (and I emphasize "looking") bar. Little did I know what a gem it would turn out to be.
We were starved and the first thing on the menu that caught my eyes were Irish curry fries. I was confounded with Irish + Curry but delighted with Curry + Fries so I had to try it. I was not disappointed. In fact, I was elated! Every fry tasted so good, it was like spinach for Popeye. I was empty with exhaustion and the fries got me gassed and ready to go. Sadly, I said goodbye to Characters, thinking I would never have the opportunity to visit them again.
The story continues with another hiking trip about a month later. This place was further upstate and since we were driving, I saw we passed Sloatsburg on the way up. I spent the whole trip talking about curry fries and pretty much forced everyone to stop for drink at Characters on the way back. I was almost sure the fries would not be as good as I remembered them but surprisingly, they brought me the same joyI felt the first time. We also tried other dishes there and they were spectacular for being bar food.
I'm teetering between 4 and 5 stars. I think I need one more visit to reconfirm my obsession with their curry fries and I'll give them their 5th. Funny that I should rate a whole restaurant solely based on one item on the menu but it's really THAT good!
Im giving this review based on the bar/bar food part of this bar/restaurant. A great buyback policy everytime i've been, better pizza than the legendary kinchley's (in my opinion by far!), and a nice quiet atmoshpere. Â a nice mini fireplace type thing in winter makes it that much cozier too. Â And not to be missed is one of my all time fave bartenders, the lovely Katie. Â put all this together, and you've got a can't miss joint in Sloatsburg of all places. Rhodes....your lucky people don't know how good this place is!!
