Three & a half skewing positive...I came to this townie bar with a Newton bred friend on a Monday night during a Bruins playoff game and the atmosphere and crowd instantly had this Long Island native feeling nostalgia for the townie bars I grew up frequenting and having the requisite love hate relationship with.  That wouldn't necessarily be enough to recommend it much, but fortunately I sampled the wings, which were very good, considerably above average.  I tried the house special "Cherry Tree Variety" which was a creamier variation of the traditional buffalo style and quite delicious. I thought this sauce to be very unique but oddly enough the next day in Somerville at the Boston Burger Company I ordered a grilled buffalo chicken sandwich which was topped with a remarkably similar sauce, suggesting this might be a somewhat common regional variation.  Whatever the case may be it would be a very good one.   Beyond the good sauce the wings were perfectly crisp, which is key in judging wings in my opinion.  Most all of the tables were ordering the "boneless wing" variations but I don't usually roll like that, I guess I am a wing traditionalist.   This place is certainly a solid choice if you find yourself in town and want some excellent wings and legit local flavor.

Fine place to have a beer but the food was bad. The worst part the experience was the waitress - she was curt and really unhelpful. Won't be going back there ever again.

This is for the grilled chicken sandwich and the Cuban sandwich.

Both are awesome!  The chicken is tender and juicy with a great grilled flavor.
The grilled pork on the cuban is the same - tender and juicy.

    Friendly, neighborhood atmosphere.

I guess why Im changing my review is because I realized that I was originally expecting too much.

Simple & good for a post softball game beer.  New renovations have opened the place up and provided much needed additional seating.

    I love the Tree!

It used to be a hole in the wall, now it's a lot bigger which I like. Not the most amazing selection of food and drink, but everything is good. I recommend Cherry Tree wings, or a Cherry Tree sandwich. They also do a good steak and cheese roll-up. I also recommend requesting steak fries!

Staff is friendly, just a great place to hang out with friends or watch a game!

Great local bar/restaurant in West Newton. Been for lunch, dinner, and drinks at night. The food is really good. The "cherry tree" sauce is delicious. The salad with steak tips is great too.

Great beer selection, and plenty of nice TV's to catch a game. Highly recommend this spot if you are looking for a nice place for a meal or a bar to catch a game.

Prices here aren't average for newton, they're fantastic. I've been looking for years to find a dive bar in newton with cheap beer and food, and this is it. If you want high end, go elsewhere.

Really cool bar, especially after the expansion.  Wish the app menu had more on it.  Love swinging in for a beer after work or during a game.

A dive bar next to the city police headquarters.  Basically three things on the menu -- all overpriced including the booze.

I love this place.  The food is delicious and the new renovation is awesome.  Try the wings or the steak tips.  They are so good!  The service is friendly.  Excellent bar.

5 stars for the wings! I've been desperately searching for better buffalo wings in the Boston area. I thought that it just couldn't be possible that the best wings were all the way out in West Newton. I think I'm calling it off... Cherry Tree undoubtedly has the crispiest, sauciest, and spiciest wings out there, hands down. All served in a no-frills plastic dish. The newly expanded Cherry Tree has just the same charm as the old hole in the wall. Small and casual without being cramped. Nothing beats a quiet sunday here for some cold beers, hot wings and a game.

My choice for the best wings in Boston. The honey hot wings are AMAZING! Grilled cheese, cuban, steak tips, even the salads if you really have to go healthy - all super good. They bar/restaurant is small now, but they just renovated the building next door and will be double the size any day now. If you've got a group, call ahead - there's a big booth by the window that fits about 10 people.

Great prices on pitchers of beer, decent pub food and the large table in the front, over the summer & with the windows open is hard to beat.  If you are looking for a cheap & fun night out in West Newton, this is your place.

went to the cheery tree for a bite to eat w/some friends.  we sat and it took about 10 mins for the waitress/bartender/busboy to come over to us.  it was a tuesday night but the were understaffed.  we tried to keep that in mind but it was hard when it would be 10-15 mins between checks of our table to see if we needed anything.

as for the food, we ordered a wing app and when it finally came, they were yummy but i think we were given maybe 6.  the burger i got was so-so as was the burger one of my friend ordered.  the turkey tips my other friend got were "dry to the bone" and she had to ask - wait, have our friend go up to the kitchen window & get sauce to pour on them just to get them down.

we all decided that was our last trip there.

Best bar ever.  But I'm biased...I met my husband here.  (And we have been patrons since before the move to the other end of the block.)

The service is pretty great and the steak tips are why I'm no longer a vegetarian.

This place is good, their wings are very good, the cherry tree sauce is tasty. I can't speak to the bar since I've never had drinks here but take out is good and pretty fast too.

Ain't nothin wrong with that! For Newton, it's quite bueno.

Pretty cool place that i enjoy going to.  Great beer selection and always a cold pint glass for the draught beer.  Standard bar food with a few twists, but they do it very well.

Go here multiple times during the week for lunch. Great food. I agree the service is slow, but if you sit at the bar there's no problems with service.

Picture it. Newton. The year is 2000 and something. Fresh faced and dewy eyed (or the other way around).. I just turned 22. I dove into my first corporate job. Little did I know at that  time every  iota of my somewhat normal, happy and stable  life would be sucked out of me.

Where was the cool place to go at this shit bag job? The Cherry Tree. Why? Cause that is where everyone went before me and probably still go now. Just like my job, I thought it was so cool in the beginning. It was a new place, my first experience in that type of environment and I was just finding my way within the setting. Everyone else was so experienced and already "belonged."  I always made the best of it and sure, it will hold a soft spot in my heart for my after work watering hole.

Yet, just like my first job, I was getting tired of things quickly. I was ready to move on to bigger and better things. I never realized how many people around me were such douche bags or how small the company, ah er, bar really was. I never realized how bad I had it, until I  talked to other people about what they do. Ah er, go. Everything about it was a mess. Plus there was no where to go. You just stood stagnant with all the other suckers around you, doing what you think you should do.

Am I talking about my first company or the Cherry Tree..or both....it doesn't matter. Same shit.  Small place with small minded people. Crappy service and very dirty. There are so many bigger and better things near me now. Looking back they both blow and I hope to never have to step a foot in Newton for the rest of my life..

    Fuckers.

Average pub grub, but it's CHEAP.  The service can be slow at times because the place can get really busy.  They tend to be understaffed.

I like the place, though.  It's got pizzaz, those big giant windows that they open when the weather is nice, and it's a good place to watch the Sox.  I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to go there, but since it's in the neighborhood, I go there sometimes to grab a drink and chow.

The barkeep was indeed more than a little standoffish tonight.  I'd been there before, though, and didn't get that impression so much, and he was certainly friendly to all the other patrons.  I don't blame him, really.  i only had one beer, and the quasi-date i was on clearly wasn't going to work out, so i had no temptation to have another pint.  The Guinness was a decidedly average pour.  Other than that, it's a good bar to watch the Sox, they have a very solid selection of beers for such a small place, and the food smelled good.  I'll look forward to a chance to stay longer the next time.

Went here on Friday night.  I can't say the bartender was friendly, but it was a decent pub.  Its a long story about how the night ended, but the bar was ok.
EDIT- I am moving this up to 4 stars cause me and the bartender are cool now...actually both bartenders.  Typical Boston, ya know?  Everyone is all cold at first, then they get to know you, and you're in like Flint.  What does that mean, anyway?

The Cherry Tree is a nice neighborhood bar in West Newton. It's a small but has a lot of character--you get the impression that the ten or so people seated at the bar are there, in the same order, every night and that their TV doesn't miss too many Red Sox outings. You also get the impression that if a Yankees fan, by some unlucky stroke of fortune, stumbled in here they might not make it out again. In other words, it's great. The bar also does a nice job representing local microbreweries and the kitchen stays open late (past 11:00). That said, it's probably not the best option if you're looker for a younger crowd or a memorable Friday night.
