The fact that Chico is in East Los is amazing. 4 stars based just on that.
Minus 1 star for the HORRIBLE music they played from 10 till 11 PM tonite. Ugh....hip hop....ugh....ugh....ugh....ugh....
Music got WAY, WAY, WAY better after 11 pm.
By the way, on Saturdays there is a cover charge of $3 after 10 PM.
Watch out when you enter. If you open the door with all your manliness like I did it will slam loud onto the bench behind it haha! Not the best entrance...oh well. I like the haunted house wall paper haha! I also like the faux fireplace WTF?
There is a long bar with some stools but by 10 they were all full. There are high and uncomfortable benches along the walls to sort of sit on.
This place is really cool for people watching more than anything. Mostly a cool, chill crowd. It seems to have a diverse crowd. There were thugs, alternative types, a Lady Gaga guy, paisas and a few that defy description (but not in a good way). We got to see a thug get picked up or vice versa. Poor Lady Gaga guy was alone all nite. Lots of fag hags. Just one sweaty guy dancing with his fag hag.... Some shirtless bartender approached me with a tray of drinks.... Were they free? Who knows. I declined. I guess they were trying to get the party started....
My BF and I left at 11:40 PM when we got the idea that no one was going to start up the dancing on the medium sized dance floor. I guess we were all too cool or too lame to get the party started this nite :( Feel bad for the guys that got the pool table out of the way - for nothing. We got to see a couple of hoochies dancing and that's it. They were hot enough to turn a gay man straight....
This place seems more like a house party than a club. Remember house parties, haha? People just standing around drinking and checking each other out and bad music playing....
GREAT place for locals....
4 stars for providing East Los boys a place to kiss ;)
I try to attend Chico at least twice a week, because the place even though small and quaint it has the best atmosphere! The bartenders are super hot and friendly! The drinks are really good and stiff. I totally recommend this place if you are looking for a cool and chill place to hang and have a good time with good people and music! Must go!
Review Source:So a few friends frequent this place because it's local, nearby and not as far as WeHo for them. So I ventured out from my normal local thing in Hollywood/WeHo, and said I'd drive the 15 minutes to Chico's. Boy what a mistake. It's lame. Really lame. It's small, empty, and uninteresting. Expensive drinks for the area and type of bar. 4 dollar sodas? Really? No one was dancing, no one was interacting. There was really no entertainment except for the ipod playing over the PA. I would never go again, and definitely would not reccommend it to anyone, maybe of course if they were from Phoenix and liked the Camelback Road bars. heh.
Review Source:i used to frequent chico's years ago when it was filled with the thickest fake fog, Â the only lighting came from a few neon signs at the bar, and the whole atmosphere was seedy as fuck. back then there was no female presence and i was always secretly honored to be the only girl the place dancing my heart out to all those kiis fm jamz.
now, almost 4 years later, i'm happy to report that not much has changed. ok, so they invested in a few of those cool looking pinkberry/ikea lanterns that give off a soft aqua glow throughout the space. it's still very dark in there and i have a feeling the clientele prefers it that way. and there were considerably more ladies than before.
i loved it then i love it now.
i enjoy this place for a variety of reasons:
~ amongst the different types of men that frequent this bar, most memorable are the cholos. gay cholos.
~ gay cholo porn on the tvs cut up with anime and other 'artsy' movies.
~ decently priced, strong drinks.
~ omg you should see when a beyonce song comes on!! <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D8mVEGfH4s5g&s=f8c780dac340972e0142572f5360af033df8d673c71a4239e8d8b3b189a1c142" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/w…</a> *hearts*
~ ok there's a 5 dollar cover, but you get a free shot ticket and the last time i was there it was the most disgustingly strong kamikaze shot of my life. ^_^
~ they play all my fave britney, christina, and jLo...probably a very similar set to the one in 2004. [i know. i have bad taste.]
i'm glad i finally made it back after all these years. and i mean, what better way can you think of to follow up a 3 hour march against the ban on gay marriage in silverlake than to hit up the gayest bar in montebello? don't answer that.
[[this straight says no to h8!]]
I was just here on Friday and was simply blown away.
We arrived at 10:15 PM, after slamming a couple of vodka tonics at the Faultline with my friend Chris. Â He had told me about Chico's, a place he once met a guy that took him back to his place and started fooling around, only to discover he kept a gun under the pillow
Him: Â "It was the scariest hook-up I've ever had"
Me: "You should have used it for some roleplay, bitch".
After hearing this, and the promise of having cold hard steel pressed against my head, I was ready to go.
For those of you that don't know about Chico's, it's a shitty utility closet-sized bar in the middle of a strip mall in Montebello. Â It's a latino bar, but by no means is it your run of the mill bean queen hub. Â I saw the ranchero cowboys with the tight jeans and silk shirts and cowboy hars. Â I also saw the femme cholos that scare me and fascinate me so. Â I was part of a group of preppy-but-slightly-urban chicos rockin' bootcut jeans, a muted collared shirt and a vest.
The trippiest thing was that they had an amazing buffet spread--sandwiches, chicken, veggies, fruits, dip, etc--on the middle of the dance floor, but in the two hours I spent there, no one touched a single thing on that table. Â Silly promoters. Â They should know the gays don't eat.
Chico is a gay bar, a gay latin bar with a few others mixed in. It opens at 8 last time I checked. They have a DJ some nights.
On Saturday they charged $3 at the door and $8 for two Mexican beers, take that West Hollywood!
We didn't get there until midnight, and it was dead-o. Magically, by one, the postage stamp sized dance floor was packed. What happened? An imperceptible slip from top-40 Power106 to top-40KIIS inspired tunes? The 10 minutes of $2 dirty water shots? The bartenders girlfriends arrived? (Answer: D, all of the above) Still, there couldn't be more that 80 people here on a busy night, and it wasn't that busy, so, say, 25 max dancing, but only for the last hour.
The crowd is 65-100 per cent male; ususally a few lesbianas latinas visible. The look is pelon, bald, augmented with a mustache when one becomes capable of growing one which could be 16 or 40, Â wifebeater or striped polo (who started that striped polo thing?), some white tennis shoes, a few extra pounds. Not a very dressy crowd. No cologne, a sure sign that none of these guys were born in Mexico. One queen arrived in a white fur edged parka out of MTV2 although it was certainly possible to cross the small parking lot in your t shirt, ready to dance. he lovingly placed the parka on the pool table and it wasn't disturbed. Most come with a partner or a couple of friends.
I don't think I'd go back on a Saturday. If you're not an Eastside latino and want to check out the scene, most of those folks will be at Arena on Saturday, which holds hundreds, if not 1000. They used to have strippers on Wed., but these may be moving with the Dj to Cobra (new name for the Rawhide in NoHo.)
Transport is easy from L.A. (It's closer in time and traffic than WeHo for me): Garfield Ave south off the 60 east. Right on Beverly. You'll see the sign in a strip mall on the left, across from the
Big A supermarket "carneceria!" "panaderia!". Parking within 40 yards of the door even on New Year's Eve. (I have had fun here on NYE!)
Consider the J & S drive through for your drunk taco needs. On the left, just before you get back to the 60. Its been open 24/7/365 since 1967.
