"You have gotta be kidding me" !! Â I have been missing out on these fabulous dishes my whole life and nobody told me?
This place Rocks!!!!
The steak tips are like little filet minions. Unbelievable !
I dine out at the clam box and the Causeway for seafood which are my two favorites. A person who lives in area that I just met told me to try this place. I was reluctant to go, but wanted to give it a try. Â This place is a hidden gem. If you love clams go here and don't forget to BRING YOUR APPETITE !!!!
I ordered a lobster roll (did not want to miss out)
and a clam appetizer . The lobster roll was towering over the roll with no mayonnaise filler, just the way I like it. Â Delicious!!!! I was moaning on every bite.
When the clam appetizer  came my eyes  almost popped out of my head. At last a place that does not skimp on the clams like when I ate at Joe Fish with guests and ordered a fried clam appetizer which came in a  coffee cup saucer. I counted  7 fried clams for $16.00..
The Choate Bridge Pub fried clam appetizer is enormous and rates A+ on taste. They were cooked perfectly, light colored, not dark and over cooked and most of all very hot when they arrive at your table. Enough with this I am getting hungry ...........I"m going now........Bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My fiancee and I took the girls here Saturday night and we enjoyed a surf 'n turf that was just amazing!! Â The prime rib was perfectly cooked and it was paired up with scallop stuffed baked shrimp..Our waitress was attentive and patient with the kids. Â They girls had a pizza and loved it! Â We especially love the bartenders, Chris & Mary! Â They are the best!
Review Source:A rustic New England pub with a fabulous clam roll. I had the clam chowder, which was good, a clam roll, which was great, and lots of beer.
The clam roll is a bit of a misnomer as it is a huge pile of whole belly clams, crispy fried to perfection burying a New England hot dog bun. (Keep eating, its down there some where. I had almost exhausted my capacity for clams and fries by the time I found the roll!
I've been here twice, perhaps the next time I'll spare my gall bladder and try something other than the clam roll.
CBP is a cozzy place. The oversize bar is in one room and the dining room in another. This keeps the noise level comfortable. For our party of four, we ordered prime ribs and lobster rolls, Everything was delicious. The prime rib is very large nicely spiced and tender. Left-overs from one serving was over a pound of beef. Lobster roll has lots of big chunks nicely coated with mayo on a grilled roll. Fries were crispy and tasty.
Prime rib and lobster rolls seem to the best bits if you want something other than pub grub. And drinks a very reasonably priced. Overall we give CBP two thumbs up and we recommend a return visit.
We were passing through town scouting possible wedding venues, and stopped here for a quick lunch.
It's located on the street corner. There are three entrances, two directly into the bar, and one directly into the dining room. We entered the dining room, and immediately felt awkward...there's nobody there to greet you, no sign saying if you should wait to be seated or just grab a table...not that we could grab a table anyway, because the three that were open hadn't been cleared yet and were full of dirty dishes. We didn't know what to do.
So we went to the bar area and sat on the stools...honestly, I still don't really know how the seating is supposed to work in the dining room, but we got good service at the bar. I had an Ipswich Ale, which really isn't my favorite but since we were in Ipswich I didn't want to be rude.
It's a fairly typical pub menu of "pub grub" and comfort food. As you should expect on the North Shore, there's plenty of fried seafood (clams, etc) on the menu. I didn't try it, but it looked (and smelled) very good! Just a quick note: for some odd reason the fried seafood platters (entrees) are listed in the appetizer section of the menu. For example, they'll have Fried Clams Appetizer, and then underneath that it will say "platter" and those are served with fries (and maybe slaw?). Normally, platters are listed under entrees or in their own "fried seafood" section. Putting them in the appetizer section is unusual and makes them hard to find.
Anyway, we both had burgers and were VERY satisfied. I like mine medium rare, she likes hers medium well, and they both came out at the same time and cooked just the way we like them. The fries were very tasty, they're battered. Yum. I would have appreciated a pickle spear in addition to the pickle slices that I put on my burger, but that's not a big deal.
The decor is blue collar yet nice, lots of old (and funny) signs on the wall like "Try our delicious sandwiches (Nobody likes a coward)." This seems like a pretty good place to come and watch a football game...if you can get a table or stool. If you end up standing, it looks like it would be VERY cramped and not a whole lot of fun. This place had a touch of that "townie" vibe to it, where it seems like you can feel people watching you as an out-of-towner when you walk in. It wasn't cold or unfriendly, but I get a feeling that if we'd come in the early evening instead of Sunday around lunch time, we might not have felt as welcome as we did. I could be wrong about that, however.
We had heard good things about the Choate so we decided to give it a try when passing through Ipswich. We were pleasantly surprised to see how cheap the menu was, yet how huge the portions were! I got marinated steak tips over a cesear salad, and I had 4 big pieces of marinated steak that were delicous. My boyfriend had the open faced Prime rib sandwich was was huge and was only $10. Atmosphere was very relaxed, TVs to watch the game, and a whole other eating section in the back of the restaurant. We will definitely stop in again when we're in the mood for some good, cheap food in the area.
Review Source:This four stars comes with the benefit of the doubt - we got burgers and fish and it was good, but its clearly not what makes this place a local favorite. On fish i'd skip the cajun seasoning, it drowns out the fresh flavor of the all fresh, all local seafood.
the service is super friendly. its cash only.
I've always had great food here. Â I'd even go so far to say this place serves up some of the best pub food I've ever had. Â Fantastic burgers-- Â Great fried Haddock sandwich and good beers. Â Prices are right too. Â If you are starved and haven't eaten for days have the steak tips or prime rib. Â The generous portions with these meals are served with sides, salad, and bread. Big fan of the fresh popcorn in the bar too.
Review Source:The pub consistently has served me good food. The prices are very reasonable. My wife and I are always happy to have dinner at the pub. The food comes out quickly and you always get more than you were expecting. The servers are friendly. The only issue I have had here is occasionally waiting a long time for the check. Overall great food and good value.
Review Source:Great place for cheap food, cold beer and a friendly atmosphere. Â I like to come here on a Saturday afternoon when it isn't as crowded and enjoy either the pizza or burgers. Â I also like their grilled cheese. Â They also have great seafood specials, but I rely on my friends for that info since I'm not a fan of anything out of the ocean.
It does get crowded at the bar most any night after 5pm up until 9pm. Â You'll be able to get a seat in the back dining room though and there are booths along the windows in the bar area. Â Cash only, but the prices make up for any inconvenience.
Overall, a great place to enjoy a meal.
It is actually called the Choate Bridge "Pub", not "Restaurant". It's nothing that fantastic on the outside or inside, but the service and the food is always pretty good.
It's pretty cramped seating, and the crowd can be quite rowdy, but as far as a pub goes, it's what one would expect.
Ok, so I'd been here once before on a visit a couple of years ago. On the advice of nearly everyone in our group, I felt compelled to try the Lobster Roll. Hey, I didn't want to get whacked by my wife's Italian family so I complied. The fact that the Lobster Roll wasn't even on the menu added to the intrigue so I took the plunge. After all was said and done, it was a great choice. It was delish. And the fries... yum yum.
On my next trip out, we just had to go to the restaurant by the bridge as my four year old put it. I heartily agreed and off we drove. It's a beautiful drive, especially in the Fall.
This time, I opted for the Seafood Chowder and the Fried Haddock Sandwich. Both were excellent. Even my wife, who's a self professed food snob declared it to be excellent. The fish wasn't overcooked, it wasn't too thick or thin and had the perfect texture.
My MIL got the hot pastrami sandwich and happily said that it was the best she'd ever had... and she's been around the block a few times, if you know what I mean. Not in that way you perv! As in been out to eat and all. Sheesh.
The two others got lobster rolls and gave me a little so I could experience that deliciousness again.
All in all, it's one of the best places to eat I've ever been. And like I said, it's a great drive and the surrounding town of Ipswitch is beautiful.
The Choate Bridge Restaurant should be more popular than it is. Â
The fried clams, fried fish plate and lobster roll are done well, good sized, very fresh and not too expensive. Â A fresh pint of Ipswich Ale goes along with the food nicely. Â The service is direct and without attitude. Â
What I like about this place is that it's consistently good (though I've never tried anything but the seafood). Â Over the last few years I have been at least ten times and have never had a bad experience.
Bringing friends from out of town gives them a non-touristy experience of local seafood. Â
It's cash only so visit the ATM before you eat.
I like the waitresses. They don't take any guff, so mind your manners, and they're good at their jobs. I like the Ipswich Ale on tap and the free popcorn machine and the sports on the tvs. I also like some of the food. Most of what I've tried is good, but I just don't like the batter they use for their fried stuff. Its not the kind of fluffy batter I love but rather that sort of crunchy, thinner batter. Good specials, though and some great basics. Some of the prices a bit high, I feel. Cash only! Don't come in here with your fancy credit cards. They will, however, take a check. Go figure.
Review Source:Let's be honest, Choate Bridge Pub is nothing to look at. Inside or out. But one thing is certain, the food is good! If you're not fussy about the aesthetics of where you're eating, you won't mind Choate Bridge one bit and the food makes it worth your while!
Like Mimi B. said, it's a great stop after you've been on Cranes Beach all day. Pure comfort food at great prices. Grilled cheese, pizza, it's all there!
The place usually has a lot of locals, particularly on the bar side. But the restaurant side, though small, is great for a small group of friends or families.
If you're ever travelling through downtown Ipswich, this is a place to check out. Parking may be a pain at times but if  you're lucky enough to get a spot, sit down for some yummy food!
When your on your way home after a day at Cranes Beach in Ipswich, you gotta stop off at the Choate Bridge Pub. Â Locals are worth the trip alone! Â Fish and chips with onion rings are amazing. Â Fresh and so much that you will roll out the door. Â Ipswich Ale on tap, so cold and good. Â I have had the burgers and they are great. Â I agree with others, be very specific how you want it cooked. Â I like mine red so I ask for Medium. Â I love it that they have a popcorn machine that you can take bowls over and nibble until your food arrives--which is always fast.
Cash only for sure
The Choate Bridge Pub is a local, historic treasure, situated at the end of the Choate Bridge, one of the oldest stone arch bridges in America. Â For those of us visiting Ipswich via the weekend commuter rail, the Choate is the perfect spot to grab a beer just before you need to pick up the next train back to Boston; just a quarter mile from the station.
Dave and I sat at the end of the bar closest to the front door and the popcorn. Â We had a great view of a wall sized flat screen and chilled with the locals. Â The bar was this beautiful slab of intricately carved wood illustrating the bridge and set under a heavily lacquered surface. Â Well besides the historic features, the place is kind of a dive. Â Hell, what's not to love about that?
For food, Dave ordered the $15 lobster roll; properly dressed in a light layer of mayo and no other fixings to speak of; just chunks of claw and knuckle (not so much of tail); on a buttered and toasted hot dog roll. Â Classic. Â The fries were the battered kind, fried up and crispy. Â I ordered the fried clam appetizer also at $15. Â It came out on a big plate served up high. Â Not sure how fresh the clams were and wouldn't call them the best I'd ever had, but it was definitely satisfying. Â Others in the bar ordered staple dishes like grilled cheese and hot dogs. Â Ahh, butter makes everything better. Â Ipswich Ale makes everything better, too. Â Fresh taste from the tap. Â Good stuff.
Oh, it's cash only, too, so bring a full wallet, especially if you go for the feast that we did. Â Otherwise, the offerings are cheap and comforting.
The place is nice enough, but the bar is the MAIN ATTRACTION and I don't drink, so it makes for a LARGE area that I will not be using. Â That being said, I enjoy a good burger and fries, so pub food is a nice change, and great for the waistline!
From time to time I can get popcorn either myself or have it given to my by the busy waitress, I am not sure if they have more than one, or it seems as such. Â
I can't say for SURE that it has wheelchair accessible, but for MYSELF, the place is cramped and I do NOT think that a wheelchair could maneuver around and I do think that there's a step up to get in, actually I am sure or I think I am.
Beer good, food good, service good, onion rings were not so good. I asked for my burger medium and it was very rare - at least they erred on the right side to my tastes.
We sat in booth number 9 though, which is half a booth with a perfect view of the TV and the wall in front of you. We decided it should be called booth 9 3/4.
Good solid reasonably priced townie place for a beer and pub grub or pizza.
Well, all I can tell anyone out there is to never order the prime rib. This superb piece of beef is supposed to be just that, Prime but not at this place. Â I had this taken off of the bill and will never visit this palce again. Instead we went to the Hart House just down the street.
It takes a big set of balls for the owner of this place to even think about serving up a piece of meat that they call prime rib looking like one big piece of fat! Â They got one chance with me so I highly recomend that everyone stay away from this joint and put the Hart House on your weekend dining out menu.
I came in one Sunday for lunch when everything else was an hour wait or closed. I was a little weary at first, it was a bunch of locals sitting at the bar already deep into their cups on a Sunday at 1 and no one else in the place. We sat in the dining room in some really old and funky booths.
I opened the menu and was pleased at the selection (good for bar food) and the cheap prices!
The old school waitress came promptly and recommended some of their specialties. the 5 of us all got different meals and we all loved them! It's not gourmet but it's good bar food for sure!
I don't remember it being a cash only place like past reviewers said.
When you're in downtown Ipswich, all three or so square blocks of it, there isn't really much in the way of a place to sit down for a decent casual meal. Â You have your high end place(s) and a bunch of pizza and sub joints. Â So The Choate sticks out as a fine place to sit down with a good beer and a good meal.
It's nothing fantastic, don't get me wrong, you're not going to get blown away by anything here -- just solid, good pub food. Â It's the kind of place you'd meet up with a couple o' friends, watch the game, get some above-average burgers and above-average fries, drink a couple beers, and so forth.
The food, beer, and service are all better than they deserve to be -- excellent place for a lunch or a low-key dinner.
