This review is a part of my  "Triumphant return to Clarendon" series to which I recently visited after a prolonged absence.  I came to visit some old buddies for a pub crawl and were still seething  from our lousy Mr. Days experience.  So for me, there was no way that this downward trajectory in our evening was going to look up any time soon by entering Clarendon Grill.

See - Things have changed quite a bit here over the last couple of years - You know the Clarendon neighborhood can be quite douch-ey and nowhere can that be more evident than its bars and restaurants.  It actually makes me feel bad because I believe that places like Clarendon Grill stand out as a place that stood in opposition to all of that but had no choice but to serve as bastions for that kind of crowd down the stretch.  In the evenings the place is actually slammed and it's very difficult to find any room to stand - let alone get a drink.  By day, the place can look pretty depressing, dingy, and dirty for lunch service and the food can be equally underwhelming.  I give this joint three stars mainly for the $1 beer happy hour specials and their outside bar and patio which are great.  In many cases I wish there were places like this in the district - but I think the chances of a meteor strike are greater than finding a $1 Sierra Nevada in DC.

None the less, Clarendon Grill still keeps it real and original - yes it can be loud and raucous but there are also great live music shows here on the weekends where the place can be intolerably crowded.  Enter at your own risk.

Seriously, do yourself a favor and do not go there during friday/saturdays after 11:30pm. Yesterday I waited literally 45 minutes then left the line and went somewhere else because it was not going anywhere. 5 minutes before we left, cops went inside to find someone so they turned on all the lights and pretty much killed the buzz. I understand they don't have any control over this but it also tells a lot about the crowd in there.

My poor Arlington deserves better places and there is definitely a demand as far as I can tell from waiting times.

    #56

Came here on a Tuesday so it's hard to take my review into consideration for the Thursday through Sunday crowd. But for a mid week stop- I'd definitely come back.

A friend and I were on our way back to the metro from dinner and dessert when we decided to stop here (I had never been so I was all for it.)

It was pretty empty as expected for a Tuesday night, though there were two large groups that posted up in front of the stage. On this stage you found this cutie of an acoustic singer with an amazing talent of singing a wide array of different types of music. He took in requests and sang my Michael Jackson request, he also went to sing a little Justin Timberlake, some Beatles, a little bit of light rock, and some R&B, and country (i'm not too savvy with artists names but recognize these main stream songs pretty well). I was impressed and slightly even a little smittened. ;)

The bar itself is pretty small. But I loved the vibe that night and would come back. The back patio was a decent size and I had fun playing a game of cornholes?? (sandbags thrown into a hole- better described as a sandbag skeeball in my opinion).

As fellow friends Eric T, Albert L, and Wayne L mention, their 1.50 beers on Thursdays seem to be pretty popular but being im not a big beer drinker (dont shoot me), their choices for wine are pretty decent as well.

    I'll be back Clarendon Grill!
