I do not think this location is quite as bad as some of the reviews make it sound. Â If I was married I would not want my wife going there, but as a middle aged man I didn't feel the least bit uncomfortable going there to pick up some food during the daytime. Â Now I will say I think the area is questionable enough that I would not go there either near or after sunset, but during the daytime I don't think it's too risky of a proposition for me.
Now on to the food. Â I was so looking forward to trying this place since I'd read the reviews here on Yelp and I just knew I was going to be hooked for life on this place. Â As far as the flavor of the rib tips go they had a nice smokey flavor and the mild sauce had a nice vinegary twang to them which is what I really enjoy. Â Now the downside is both my landlord (when she heard I was going she had me pick her up an order too) and I agreed that the rib tip meat was kind of tough and too chewy. Â The flavor was good it's just hard to get too excited over tough meat that's requires a lot of chewing.
In addition to the rib tips I also ordered 6 chicken wings with mild sauce. Â Now on the chicken wings I can get a bit more enthusiastic about my experience here. Â I found them to be very tasty and can't complain about a single aspect to them so hats off to them on the wings.
As far as the 2 men working there they were both very friendly and if I was rating on customer service they'd definitely get a 5 star rating from me. Â Unfortunately the lions share of my ratings are based on food flavors, but I certainly want to give credit where credit is due.
Based on the other reviews on Yelp for this place I suspect that the just A-OK rib tips I had today are probably not the norm and I'd encourage others to try this place. Â Even though I wasn't super impressed with the rib tips this time at some point in the future I will go back and I'm fairly confident that I'll have a better experience based on what so many other people have written here on Yelp. Â Go ahead and try this place, the neighborhood isn't nearly as scarey as some people believe and sometimes part of the adventure of eating is the fun getting to the food!!!!
I came here with a past signif other many years ago. Â Only once, and I have remembered it ever since. Â This place is ghetto. Â So ghetto, this girl wouldn't get out of the car. Â While waiting in said car, I saw a few kids walk out of the BBQ place, go across the street barefoot, come back with bags of wonder bread. Â I thought, WHERE THE FUCK HAVE YOU TAKEN ME?? Â Turns out, it was probably the best BBQ I have ever eaten. Â Wings, rib tips, fries, the sauce all soaked up by that wonder bread. It was all eaten by the time we got back to the house. Â If you can handle getting your
BBQ from behind bullet proof glass, go ahead and go here. Â Great food, but not worth risking my life for. Â Again, I'm a white girl from Bucktown, so it's possible I'm exaggerating. Â I tend to do that. Â But just go see for yourself. Â Take some ammunition. Â Get the wing-rib tip combo. God speed.
Yep, this is the real deal. This is the rib tip I use to compare all others to. The downside? You better be in a Hummer with bullet-proof glass, because the neighborhood is really scary; but these tips are worth the risk of life and limb - seriously.
Smoky, meaty, juicy, tender, great sauce. Sittin' on a pile o' fries, with a slice or two of wonder bread on the bottom to soak it all up. You can almost hear your arteries harden as you eat, but again - worth it!
Hey if you're goin', pick me up an order will ya? I'll be waiting for you somewhere west of Austin avenue!
SO GOOD! Â Rib tipsss, I love the combo that comes with the chicken. Â The sauce is spicy and sweet. Â Just how I like it. Â They also apparently sell the sauce in quarts and gallons.
The menu doesn't mention it but all the combos come with fries... they're kinda buried at the bottom, swimming in sauce so it might be awhile til you find it. Â If you don't like your fries drenched in sauce make sure you tell them before you order a side of fries.
Craving this place now.... Â Mmm.
Man I looove Colemans chicken! The wings are a nice size not too big and the mild sauce is off the chain!! Not to mention the fries, they are a lil stingy with the fries but they are sooo good. Whenever I go I just get a extra order of fries. Their tip are good also, but u have to ask for them cut thin.
Overall coleman is a great BBQ joint I would choose them any day especially over Joes!!!
Two words: Â RIB TIPS !!!
Nothing fancy about Coleman's. Â Like most to-go food establishments on the west side of Chicago, you either call in your order or order your tips throught a bulletproof glass window.
The tips are meaty and the sauce is perfectly tangy. Â I am craving this right now so I looked up Coleman's on Yelp. Â Ever since Mr. D's in Maywood closed, Coleman's has been the place to get rib tips. Â I like them swimming in sauce!
