Beautiful setting and good service, but the food is bland to the point of no taste and very expensive for the low quality.

There really nice but the food just plain sucks i ordered a burrito cuz no one can get that wrong but they did the only thing in it was beans they didn't even fold in the ends so it was basically a soft taco with over salted beans i feel like if u just go there for drinks and bar food you'll b fine but just never for a real dinner

We celebrated our friend Chuck Montoya's Birthday at Compadres.  It was a milestone Birthday thus, it was important for the night to go well.  We had a party for Eight people.  Compadres had donated a Pig out Party to the NAPA Chamber of Commerce And thru a slitent auction we purchased the donation.  Compadres has been very giving thru the years to our community with donations.  We enjoyed a delicious dinner with the best service.  Drinks were included.  We had appetizers including yummy guacamole, followed by Caesar salad, next a spectacular carnitas family style meal, the grand finale were cream caramel for everyone.  Bravo.  If given the opportunity we'd do it all over again.

Compadres Rio Grille is just wonderful! It had that warm family environment, the atmosphere is positive and the staff was friendly and helpful!! The patio was very welcoming with a decent sized koi pond that my children could look at and fed the fish, it is on the Napa River which gave it a relaxing feel and the music was just right! I heard they have live music often which I hope to return and experience! I am a people watcher and as I looked around everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves! The bar crowd was decent and acceptable, the people sitting inside were enjoying watching the baseball game and the groups outside filled the air with laughter! All guests and staff were smiling which put out great energy!! I could definitely see coming back with my husband and enjoying their AMAZING MARGARITAS!! Their menu option had such variety that anyone with any restrictions or food preference could be taken care of! I asked about my entrées that I had ordered for myself and my children( which by the way were delicious!) and I was told all ingredients are fresh and prepped daily! I will most definitely be back!!

I am a local who tried to use Compadres for catering.  Scott didn't know how to respond to my request (either you can help me or you can't. it's not a trick question).  Then he lost my phone number and never called me back to confirm.  The right hand (Scott) never told the left (Jeff) about the order so when I called to find out what was happening, Jeff treated me like I was the problem.  I tried to pay in advance and was instructed to pay when I picked up the food.

I arrived to pickup the food and was told there was no order.  I panicked because I had a house full of guests to feed.  Then the cook came out and said they did have my order and it was ready.  I tried to pay and the hostess told me the food had already been paid for.  The following day I got a call from Jeff saying the hostess told him that I SAID I ALREADY PAID, insinuating that I was trying to not pay for the food!  Are you kidding?  I tried to pay twice already!!!

The following day I returned the pans (they didn't use disposables) all cleaned and tried to pay the bill (again).  I was kept waiting for 15 minutes.  There was no invoice, just a demand for payment by Jeff.  When I tried to relate how poor their customer service was, Jeff wanted to argue with me!!!  At no time was there any heartfelt apology.  Unbelievable that a local business is willing to treat people this way.  Next catering job will go to another business who is interested in providing service.

We really wanted to like this place.
It's charming enough on the inside and deck, staff was friendly and polite. The food however was some of the worst Mexican we have had. We had several items in the menu, their Chilingalina was their listed speciality and was te highlight of our meal but still very bland. The red sauce on the burrito, the Maximo, was awful. My
14 year old step-son couldn't even choke it down. Same for the beef on the salad, it was marinated in a smokey and sweet paste that was then burnt. The tomato vinaigrette was good and added to salsa actually have the salsa a little kick. Too bad, the setting was nice and people friendly but the food was not what I would consider Mexican worth eating. We would go back after a kitchen overhaul.

    Great bloody Mary
    Great margaritas
    Great nachos with chicken
Great band playing on the patio!

What better way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon in Napa?!

This establishment has the potential to be an above standard restaurant.  Unfortunately, they seem to be lacking in the minor needs - Customer Service and efficiency.
We had a party of 10 and had made reservations so they would be prepared.  Accessing the restaurant was a bit difficult because they were hosting a student carwash in the parking lot - which is fine, but it was obstructing the entrance and clear passage through the parking lot.
We were coming from different  locations, so we came in two parties.  They were not busy at all.  The atmosphere was nice and the employees were all very nice - just very slow and laid back.  We ordered drinks and literally waited over 10 minutes for them to be brought to our table.  I saw them sitting on the bar and was tempted to go get them myself (since they were frozen blended drinks).  I gave them a chance to deliver after this first faux pas, but it just went downhill from there.
Once our entire party arrived we then waited another 15 minutes to get their drink orders and menus.  After we ordered, it took another 30 minutes for the food to arrive and it was cold.  One of the orders was overlooked completely and while our food was cold upon being delivered, had we waited for the "overlooked" order to be brough out, our food would have been even less desirable.  The food itself was mediocre, at best.  Not bad, not fabulous, not anything I would go out of my way for.  And the final meal was brought out as they cleared the plates of those of us that had finished our meals while we waited.
At NO time did a server or the Manager or anyone come by to ask if everything was alright.  Yet, the employees did have ample time to stand around and talk amongst themselves.
When we made the reservations we did tell them it was for a birthday celebration.  However, they never offered us anything more than we ordered, made no effort to even ask who's birthday it was or even bring us a dessert list.
The bill was quite high for the quality of food and service they delivered.
If I were to give them a second chance, I would maybe go for a cocktail and sit outside and just have a drink and chips.  Must say the chips were the highlight of the experience - but certainly not worth the $$$.

Sorry - this is not pretty. I used to go to Compadres when they were in Yountville and it was always pretty good - not fancy or particularly memorable, but it was clean and the food was fresh. I recently took my Mom, Aunt and Sister out for Mother's Day to the location in Napa and while the staff was definitely delightful the food was not. The chips and salsa - good; the guacamole quite good but when the entrees came out which seemed like in lightening fast speed it was clear that they were pre-prepared and then microwaved. I had a combo plate of chili relleno and a chicken poblana enchilada. Both were cold in the center and if they had been made fresh I think the flavors would have soared. The rice and beans that accompanied it were bland and uninspired. I do not like the decor at all and the room just seems dirty,  which is never something I enjoy eating food in. I won't be back unless everything except the staff has changed for the better.

Margaritas and nibbles are the only thing I'd come back for. Food was blah, service was poor and the final straw was that they stopped taking online/OpenTable reservations.

They do have a killer patio over the river though. Margaritas + sunny riverfront patio...yeah I'll give it another shot soon!

the service was good...the food was okay...
I brought my little man for their taco Tuesday event...be aware that if you don't have cash no tacos for you...and if you need a gluten free meal, don't order their piña colada...it has gluten....

The food was disappointing to say the least.  The margarita was fine but not the best.  My fiance and I had totally different entrees but what they had in common was way too much salt.  The salsa was sweet and off, the chips were way too salty.  The atmosphere is fine but the food is not good so don't waste your time or money.

I have been there 2 times now and both times service and food were very good. Even when they were busy service didn't suffer. My kid spilled an ENTIRE BEER all over my other kid and they were totally cool about it. It was funny I admit.
Chips great! Guac great! Prices aren't bad either.
Comfy seats inside. The normal harder chairs outside, but nice view of the stream and trees. Note that is easy to pass because it sets back a bit, but if you can find the evil Walmart you are close enough to throw a stone there.
    We will return often!

My co worker who is a Napa local brought me one time to their Taco Tuesday, service was very good until I came there yesterday by myself to get some chicken tacos to bring home. I was still in my scrubs and obviously an Asian with my looks and skin. The general manager didn't even bother to say hello or not even a single smile from the time I ordered for the taco till he placed it on top of the clear display counter for me to pick up. I didn't know that they do not accept card for the tacos which is so stupid, and when I asked is there any ATM machine he didn't even reply, the looks suggest that, I should get out of there. Never I would ever go back to that place though the food is great but with that treatment, I felt racism still exist.

I had dinner with a friend 2 weeks ago.  I ordered their HUGE steak burrito.  I don't remember the exact name on the menu but I was very disappointed.  It was 80% bean & rice which was terrible  and maybe there was total of 5 small pieces of steak and very little guacamole and sour cream.  I had a few bites but just couldnt eat it.  I dug in to the middle to see if I could find the steak and there it was. 5 small pieces.  I will not go back and definitely won't be recommending it to friends.

I was given a $25 gift certificate for my birthday and one Friday evening after work I decided to take my 13 year old daughter with me and to give Compadres a try & utilize my $25.  This is one of the best Mexican restaurants I have ever been to.  The food was delicious and my server, Jake (I believe that is his name) was super friendly.  I do think a Friday evening is a bit much for children with the drinking and adult socializing going on but besides that, I will definitely be revising this place on a Friday and/or Saturday evening with friends.

You can never go wrong with Mexican food! I can eat this stuff morning, noon and night!

Came here for the first time and we ended up getting a couple drinks, food and to watch the game.

The chips and salsa they give was good, my favorite was the green salsa that they provided, had a garlic taste.

I then gladly enjoyed a mimosa and a sip from my friend's amazing bloody mary! Hint,  order a side of bacon and put a couple pieces in your drink and let it sit for a bit.

    I then had:
DOS RICARDOS - a Compadres original! Carnitas, house made chorizo, al Pastor, roasted chicken, or grilled steak over frijoles on a large tortilla, topped with three ranch fresh eggs and a mild ranchera sauce or rich salsa verde. Garnished with sour cream, fresh made guacamole, salsa fresca 12.95

I ended up having it with the steak, superb! This could easily be shared with a couple people. I could have done without the black beans and I had my eggs over easy.

The decor of this place I also enjoyed, very comfy, cottage like feel. I can definitely seeing myself come back here when I come to visit.

Whenever I'm in Napa and craving some Mexican food, this is the place I want to go. They have great drinks, friendly and attentive service and a menu where everything looks so good, it's hard to decide! My favorite dish is the Huarache which is fried mesa covered in lettuce, beans, sour cream, salsa, avocados, and your choice of meat (pick the carnitas, yum!). I've never had a bad experience and although it's bit pricier than most Mexican restaurants, it's well worth it.

I'm a local that has been coming to Compadres since 1994.  For a couple of years, a group of friends and I would come every Thursday during the summer
    I'll start with the good.

The new location is beautiful being right on the Napa River and the atmosphere is good.  On warm summer days we love to sit on the patio and drink margaritas as the river goes by.

The back bar margaritas rock.  This is why we come.

The service is okay.  It's not horrible but it's certainly not good.

    The bad

Their food is so hit and miss it's a nightmare.  You never know what you will get.  My wife and I were in there a month ago and we had one of the best Mexican meals we have ever had.  We ordered the exact same dinners, chicken fajitas and the shrimp, two weeks later and it was horrible.  We sent the shrimp back as it was still a little raw inside and the food was simply blah.  This happens again and again.

This could be one of the best Mexican restaurants in California if they would simply get consistent with their food.  They are in desperate need of training in the kitchen.  We shouldn't have to guess what the quality of the food will be.

I can recommend it as a great place to get drinks and hang out with friends.  I would not recommend it to anyone as a place to eat.

My friend pretty much summed it up before we met here for dinner.  The margaritas are great, the food eh not so much.  As promised, the $5 top shelf margarita (available at that price all day on Mondays, hoozah!) was pretty good.  Their sweet and sour mix wasn't cloyingly sweet and sticky and there was plenty of tequila in the glass.

I had the interesting experience of ordering a burrito with steak and receiving a meatless burrito which was then supplemented with a bowl of chopped up meat to remedy the kitchen error.  Mmmmm, now that'll get you salivating.  The food was standard and completely and totally not worth the price.  I'm pretty much a die hard burrito kind of girl, and I barely choked down half of this one.  I paid $60 for my half of the bill (covered the burrito, 2 margaritas, a quesadilla and split of the queso fundido).  Service was also shockingly incompetent and resulted in an argument over some delightful additions he made to the bill after having a very clear conversation where he explicitly stated that ALL top shelf cocktails were $5.

Lesson learned, when I go back I'm drinking margaritas and that's it!

Wow there are a lot of haters out there on Compadres! For me, it's a nice place to go after work, but if you're not a "Napa local" then I would strongly recommend you go elsewhere.

The price is really great for a Napa restaurant! I'm confused as to why people seem to think it's super-expensive. ALL of Napa is super-expensive.

I have been here many times with friends and co-workers and have always been treated well, food arrived fast and hot, drinks were great, and felt like our server paid attention to us. The terrace in the back that overlooks the Napa river is GREAT!

Good Mexican food, not mega-authentic but not Taco Bell either. They have great salsa and a huge menu. I think you should really try it and don't go on just negative reviews alone (and no, I don't work there.)

There are so many Mexicans that live in the area. You'd think their dishes would actually taste good and have a more authentic flavor.

The service was friendly but the food was really bland. I would have to say that it is probably because the clientele is very homogeneous and therefore they might not care. The margarita mix is too sour and if you're a Mexican place that serves margaritas you should make them the REAL way - with lime juice and triple sec. Or go more 2011 and use agave simple syrup. A jug of mix? Really?!?! I get that you're branding yourselves but it is not a good tasting mix.

I prefer Chevy's.....and that is saying a lot for this Mexi-chick.

I was taken to Compadres for my birthday by my wife and friends. I have been to the one in yountville years ago and Didnt care for it much. I thought what the hell maybe the one in napa is better, well i was wrong.

It was pretty dead especially for a Friday night. The wife and I both got chimichangas They come with with a side of rice and a lil salad. I got 2 beers and My wife got a Margarita. The food was ok and came out pretty quick. service was ok too. Everything wasnt bad is just wasnt good if that makes sense? I think the price of our meal is what killed it for me, seemed a bit pricey for mediocre mexican food.

There are many very goody mexican food joints in Napa Id skip compadres.

After a wonderful afternoon spent with friends in Yountville we decided to go here for dinner and Eek! Methinks ick! While the wait time wasn't bad at all for a table of 11 everything else was horrible.

    1) We asked for a table to seat 11 and they gave us a table for 10.
    2) There was no silverware at the table until they brought out the food. WTF?
    3) It took at least 3 times for one of the children present to get the glass of milk his mother ordered for him.
    4) After placing our order for food it took at least 45 minutes for them to deliver it. The food wasn't even warm at that point and frankly flavorless. El Torito has better food.
    5) Crappy service. Our server was so bad it wasn't even funny. He had no idea what to do or what was going on. The place wasn't even busy for a Friday night.

To say the least we didn't leave a tip, not even a penny. Sucks for them..they could have had a very nice tip from 11 people but instead they got zero.

    We will not be returning.

Walking in we were greeted by two lovely little ladies and one of them showed us to our table.  Even though the place was empty except for two tables, she chose to seat us at a table that was too small for the four of us and we had to ask to be moved. Why?   Strike number 1.

On the way in I saw a sign that said Carte Blanca was on tap for $3.00 for a 24 ounce beer.  I asked the waiter about it and he said I was mistaken???  Hmmmm!  Strike number 2.

I think the food was supposed to be some Mexican American fusion or some other weird blend that did not hit the mark.  We had Mexican Meatloaf.  It was way too sweet with some weird concoction of sauces and the meat tasted old.  We also had something they called Pollo Rellenos that had an over abundance of flavorless chicken breast on a bed of diced tomatoes with herbs.  Where was my cheese?  What a miserable concoction.  Yuck!  Strike number 3.

The ambience was great with a nice view of the Napa River and the waiter was pleasant even if he was a little slow.

Hopefully I will never have a reason to return.

Lovely warm evening. Thankful that their overhead fans were working.

Ordered the enchiladas sonoras and found them okay. Nothing exciting. The chips were fresh and and the salsa (can't remember if it was the red or the green) was really good. The other one was bland.

Very attentive bartenders. They were busy and I thought they were professional in how they handled the evening.

OK, this place is so bad that I couldn't even like it when I had a pretty good buzz.  Here's why:

    1) The hostess is incompetent.  She couldn't give us an accurate figure about how long it would be to get a table.  So, she sent us to the bar to wait.  OK...

    2) The bar was about 80% full with happy-sounding people with drinks and baskets of chips and little bowls of salsa that you'd expect to see at a bar in a Mexican restaurant.  So we wanted in.  But the fat, red-nosed bartender ignored us for about 15 minutes.  When he did serve us, he failed to give us chips.  So hungry...so we flag down the hostess and ask her if she has an update...

1A) ...but the bitch just walks away...

2A) ...so I just drink my lousy iced tea and imagine eating the other patron's chips for about 20 more minutes...

1B) ...until the hostess says that they're "cleaning off a 5-top for [us] RIGHT NOW!!1!!"  Hooray...

2B) ...but we're still waiting, chipless, in the bar.  So, I start gnawing on my left hand since I'm really hungry and I already ate the ice cubes and the lemon slice from my iced tea.

    3)  So eventually we get seated and order some overpriced Gringo-Mex food from a dour waitress who later just plops it all down on the table.

    4) The food tastes bad.  I would compare it unfavorably with Chevy's.

1C/3A) The staff knows we're unhappy, but they make no effort to ameliorate the situation.  We short them on the tip* since the service was so bad.

    5) I had to barf on the drive home.

    * If you've read this far, Gentle Reader, you've worked harder than all of Compadres combined.  So it's you who deserves the tip, Gentle Reader!  My tip to you is: DON'T GO TO THIS LOUSY FUCKING RESTAURANT.

Went here after a day of wine tasting. We were seated promptly and chips and salsa came out pretty quickly.

I ordered th De Zihuatanejo because it was something I had never heard of before. It was fish, shrimp, and bacon in a green sauce. It was so good. My bf got the carnitas tacos and I had one of his and drizzled my green sauce on top. It was a delicios combination.

    Great place!

I thought this place was pretty packed for 5pm on a Tuesday when I pulled into the parking lot until I met my friends and told me I better get my hands on the $1 Tacos and $3 24oz Modelos that ends at 6pm.  I was like I better get my grub on and offcourse there was a line, the tacos turned out ~okay~ for a $1 I think of it as a filler.  And the Modelo beer is a big "tall-boy" can, but you can ask for a glass if you want.  My friends had been there awhile before I got there but the server didn't even show up once while I was there besides to drop-off/pickup the check.

There is plenty of seating inside and on the patio, and there is a creek or something that runs out back.  But the restroom facilities are kind of limited along with the parking.  I would no go back here unless one of my friend really insists.  Otherwise only catch it during their Taco/Modelo Happy Hour, cuz its so bloody cheap.

    OLE!

We had a super fun and yummy dinner here in napa last weekend.  It's definitely no frills but they serve up some spicy salsa, yummy margaritas and have a HUGE menu full of mexican deliciousness.

It was great to do something casual and laid back when dining in wine country....the restaurant was big, prices were good, service was good and we had a great time!

I had some sort of salad...the Popolo or something like that -- it was AWESOME!  grilled steak atop a salad of lettuce, cheese, beans, avocado, etc....yummy

This place is ok, the food is Americanized, not very authentic.  There seems to be ketchup in the red salsa and the green salsa is watered down.  It's a nice place, but when there was a blonde dude singing "born to be wild" as you walk in the door, maybe they should change the name to something more appropriate like "The Three Amigos".  if you like bland Mexican food with ketchup instead of salsa, then you'll like this place.
I would not go back there.  Great location though.

You take some corn. You grind it up. Anything ground is good, think about it; garlic powder, coffee, blow, grinding - all good.

In this case you made a tortilla, you fry it. You dip it in cut up tomatoes with spices and you're happy.

They do something right with the grinding or with the frying - but probably both that makes you eat that whole basket of chips when you were originally just going to have "a couple."

My Naponian Friend and I came here on Valentine's. Surely people were tyring to figure out if we were lesbians or not, seeing as we were on display in the window and all, so we would eat off eachother's forks and wipe the corners of eachother's mouths, just to make it interesting. When I took a body shot off her at the bar could be when it turned a corner...

For dinner I was having a had time making a decision. This is not full on authentic Mexican, it's more like Texican Mexican, but I was loving the choices. And if the food was half as good as the chips, I knew we'd be in good shape. Settling on the fajitas, I was happy with my platter of black beans, vegetables, tortillas, guacamole and sour cream. So much good, so much food.

I liked the service, I liked the unpretencious atmosphere and the food was perfectly satisfying. Good flavor, good portions.

    Wine list is well rounded, full bar doesn't disappoint. To put it simply;
    Compadres - Comprende?

New locale, same poor food. I took some young teens out for a birthday and they tabbed the recently relocated Compadres. At this point even a 12 year-old in California can tell good Mexican food from poor. Nobody finished their food and nobody was happy. The atmosphere remains friendly but we are going there to eat. I had 2 fish tacos (for $12) and quickly realized than several places in town would have given me better food for half the price. At Compadres there is, admittedly, plenty of fish but they know not what to do with it. The meat is fine and costly (?) so they must charge this high price.
Really should anyone go there to eat--no.

It was OK.  We hit up Compadres  in it's new Napa location with the family on New Year's Day.

Now Napa has a few good Mexican places  but they're mostly taco joints.  Sure Oakland has better but since I was born and raised and ate my first burrito in Napa - I'm sentimental.

The lay-out of the space is a little maze like.  I was glad I didn't have to pee b/c I probably would have gotten lost on the way to the ladies.

The drinks were good but the place was freakin' loud.  My grandparents are totally going to hate that when they go.

Chips and Salsas at the table were fairly tasty with both a red salsa and a bean "salsa".

The food was OK.  Honey's soup was "boring ass chicken  with some tortillas on top" .  Uncle liked his Fish Tacos and they looked pretty good and my step-dad (who's a rib snob) liked his tex-mex rib plate.

I had a fancy tortilla pie - it was good and I ate all of it.

    Two things were really odd:
The pricing.  Maybe they're passing along the moving costs to the customers.  This is Napa.  Not "up valley".  You are now located within walking distance of the Wal-Mart and by my mom's vet.  Dinner for 4 with one drink was over $100 with no apps or dessert.

The Menu.  Authentic Mexican, Americanized Mexican, Tex-Mex and some fusion (carnitas pulled pork sliders?)  all mashed in to a menu  made for a schitzo  selection of dishes.

Um, I'd go back if they were open and no wait and we were hungry  but we won't be requesting Compadres the next time we're up for dinner.

The only reason I agreed to come was because they were paying for the margaritas and Douglas "Doogie" Houser was playing his set that night.
I had over a month to get this yelp turned in, but waited until the last minute to quickly type up the dictation that I [spoke] into my recorder that night:

"Looking at glass houses being hanged by windows.
Cute girls of course not ready for winter time in California.
Because it's most likely like summer time, like spring time in California.
The strumming of guitar filling the air - I'm still in the air.
Baseball pictures of football, basketball on the big screens.
Here, we're barely fucking good looking. (laughs.)
Guess who guy's laugh - It's the quickest, quickest.
You've got the buzz to say it.
Wall of flame, the shawl of flame, the wall of lame.
You got necks that don't deserve to be necks.
Somehow, we're all part of this.
Selling Tobacco Indians.  Fan blades not moving since the induction of Compadres, the friendly father.
This noise - Four inches of starch - this silence.
They say I have to leave.  (yells:)  I don't know why!"

So here is the scoop, this restaurant was in Yountville as of a few weeks ago, but they left and relocated to Napa.

I guess between Keller and Philippe there was no room for good old fashion Mexican food.

The food and stiff margaritas did not change in the move -- a few of the staff are new but my impressions remain the same, I will miss the out door seating in lovely Yountville but I can manage.

I reposed my initial review which I still stand by:

Margaritas and Nachos  in Napa?  If you want a break from $10 crappy wine tasting and stale couple of days old bread then take a break at Compadres in Yountville (NOW NAPA).

Think about it, a Mexican restaurant nestled in gourmet alley.  With neighbors like The French Laundry and Bouchon you cant go wrong.

Its not a destination place, its where you go when you want a break from tannins, viscosity and all that mumbo jumbo wine talk.

I recommend the nachos (with chorizo) and the margaritas -- sit out on the patio or take in the sun on the lawn -- you will not go wrong -- you may not make your next wine tasting appointment but you wont regret it.

    SALUD!
