The cooler used to be so gross, but they have really turned themselves around over the years! Â Now it is a much nicer sports bar - not upscale, not a total dive, just right. Â Tons of TVs, tons of space. Â The food is surprisingly delicious - I recommend the sliders with bacon, bleu cheese, and sauteed onions. Â YUM! Â After I ordered the bartender decided it's what he was having for dinner too :) This is one of my parents favorite spots now, so when I go home to visit we tend to end up here for basketball games and such. Â The staff is friendly and helpful, and it's always a good time.
Review Source:Not a bad sports bar, though a little small inside. Â Right off of MLK Blvd. near the stadium. Â But the building on the inside is interesting. Â Reminded me of being in a barn. Â Lots of tables, lots of TV's, lots of patrons on this first day of the college football season. Â And yes, everyone in there except me was a Duck fan. Â No problem, everyone was very nice. Â I sauntered up to the bar for lunch and Joey was my bartender.
As I waited for my fish and chips, there seemed to be 20 people working and running back and forth, but it was organized chaos.
I began with a cup of clam chowder and, for a sports bar, not bad at all. Â Dipped my garlic bread in it and had myself a nice little appetizer. Â My F&C arrived and the fish was quite tasty. Â However, the chips were a little soggy and not hot. Â Oh well. Â
But, service was great, the place was hopping and I had me a decent meal before watching my team get their you-know-what's beat.
One of my favorite Eugene bars. Â Gorgeous women and awesome drinks.
They make a fish bowl drink that is great for partying, but bad for driving home. (find a cab). Â
I love the atmosphere of this bar. It looks like built a tavern inside of a home depot lumber department. Â Smells like rich mahogany and .25 cent restroom cologne.
So my buddy got off work at 8am and I had a meeting at 9. I wanted a place to grab a beer and some breakfast. After calling a few bars and asking their hours I used my brain(yelp) and saw The Cooler was open early.
There was only 5 people in the bar including me and my friend. So the service was great. The bartender was funny and fun to talk to while I waited.
I ordered a pint of Mirror Pond and it was 4.50, which is pretty stiff for a common Oregon beer. It's pretty ridiculous to charge so much for a pint when you can get a 6 pack for twice that. My breakfast burrito(the Mo) on the other hand was great. It was just enough food, not too filling. If you're super hungry I would get the potatoes with it.
Overall it was a good spot to grab a drink and some breakfast. Just check if they have any drink specials so you're not getting screwed.
I'm going out on a limb: This is my favorite shape of a Eugene bar building in city limits; scratch that, in mid- to southern Oregon.
Let's put aside what's inside. Who doesn't like the half-keg that is The Cooler? Well, in Eugene, a lot of people don't like it. But from a guy who lived down the street for a couple of years, this place is solid.
I never liked the brush-off I'd get from the bartenders because I was a few years older than the hot tail they cared about, but I had some fun in this place. The drinks are reasonable and the vibe can be great, especially during karaoke nights.
My No. 1 and No. 2 memories: (1) the sweatshirt with a pig on it that I bought for a Bay Area buddy in 2006 that is still in circulation, and (2) the $150 I'm still up from the nights in the smoke-filled dungeon of touch-screen gambling encased in a wood-and-cheap-steel cage.
Could it be cooler? With effort. But it's still cooler than most spots.
The Cooler is a good spot to get hammered...I can't say i've been there during a duck game...but it does get packed. Â Very packed. Â They have a huge 15' projection TV which is cool...I think they have 2 to 3 pool tables also. Â Service is kinda on the lower end. I think that's due to a small bar with LOTS of people.
I cant vouch for the food, but drinks are standard....normal priced, nothing too strong. Â We normally stumble in here during a night out. We dont normally kick things off here...kinda the tail end of the night thing. Â Next year I would like to watch a game at the cooler, that could bump my review to 4 stars for sure.
HORRIBLE!!!!!! The servers (all but day shift) I'm talking about Tina and Taylor... ARE HORRIBLE!! Watch out!! When you play their OREGON LOTTERY machines, they short change you...Should you complain.. you are told "If you don't like it, go somewhere else"?? Cant wait to contact the Oregon lottery on these LOSERS! Horrible service - rude- and have this holier than thou attitude- even though they are paid $6.00/HR at BEST! Scum of the EARTH!!!!! Seriously- there are better- more reputable places out there- DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!!!!! Too bad I can't give them a .25! I'm just comforted by the fact that once I turn these losers into the Oregon Lottery board- they wil do the legwork and close these muthers DOWN!
Review Source:This place is really hit or miss.
The food is not the worst I've ever had, just standard pub fare. Sometimes it comes out a little on the cold side.
They have plenty of TVs, and the crowd atmosphere is great on game days. They even have those little table speakers so you can hear the audio from whatever TV you're watching. That's a nice touch.
Service is sub-par. They always seem to be understaffed. There is a guy who seems to double as a bartender who has served us in the past, and he's great. Unfortunately, we don't normally get him. More often it's a surly woman who seems annoyed whenever we "ask for anything" or "order food" or "talk to her". The turnaround on food with her is extremely slow and drinks orders are frequently forgotten.
So if you just want to drink, and just on game day, I'd say roll the dice. Any other time, you can do much better in Eugene.
The Cooler is barn converted into a bar that is in a nice secluded location near Autzen and is a great place to watch a game. The place is filled with couches and even elevated seating surrounded by TVs. The food is ok, my fav item on the menu is their white-castle like burgers, but the rest is your typical bar food. On weekends, it becomes a a small club, and really crowded. The music is typically a mix of early 90s/2000s R&B songs (DJ included). The service is mild at best, but this place is a great place to watch games with your friends if you don't mind so-so food and service.
