Three starts for the pool hall portion of The Wave. The area is HUGE with lots of tables and basically never a wait. The TVs are old and small and terrible so don't think you can play pool and catch a game at the same time. The bar service is inconsistent from the waitresses, but sometimes you get lucky and end up with someone attentive.
Review Source:This place gets two stars for the karaoke, which is fun. That's it. The drinks are lousier than fleas, they only put about half a shot into a glass full of ice and fill the rest up with soda. I actually had to ask the bartender if there was alcohol in it. So unless there's a mighty round of pre-gaming in order for the night, I'd stick to beer when arriving at The Wave.
However, I like that there are booths that are usually open to sit in and that you don't have to go into Boston. It's a fun place to go if you're looking to hang with the peeps for a few drinks (beer only). And who doesn't love karaoke?
The drinks though, yikes!
I have been to the Wave probably close to 50 times due to the fact I am engaged to one of it's biggest fans.
The wave as it is known to locals and fans is huge. You drive into this industrial park that is all closed since it is a weekend night and park in front of a health club. Then you walk up two giant sets of stairs and all you smell is the chlorine that is piped up from the pool below. It is an experience. If you turn right you find the pool tables. Some are new, some are old it is hit or miss. Saturday afternoons they have discounted pool but the prices are always pretty inexpensive.
If you turn right you will find the bar that if the fitness club below is open you can watch the racquetball courts. They have a few tv's and a handful of beers on tap including a Bud heavy $2 draft.
Behind the bar is a small dart/card area which sometimes is being used but most of the time it is not.
All the way in the back is a function room. I have seen a wedding here, yes a wedding and many memorials, grad parties and and an occasional reunion take place.
On weekends they have karaoke which is always entertaining. You are almost guaranteed to see some good townie on townie action and at least one woman with blonde feathered hair.
I have eaten there food once which gave me severe food poisoning so do not eat. The drinks are strong and reasonable. This is more about people watching and having a laid back night where you can go out in jeans and a hoodie and leave your heels at home. It is a nice change from going out in Boston but you need to have an open mind.
The pool tables are inconsistent; but there are so many. Some are good (new felt) and some are worn. But, overall, good quality.
This is a legitimate pool hall. There is a large pool culture here: good players, leagues, tournaments, good equipment....
Prices are lower than average; probably, because the location is terrible (in some corporate park in Waltham).
There is a 'dive bar' attached to the pool hall. That's where the Waverly Sports Pub/The Wave/ Corner Pocket confusion comes from.
I went to the Corner Pocket to play pool, because that's what I do, so that's what this review is about. It was early Saturday afternoon and the place was deserted. There were ~25 9-ft Brunswick pool tables, plus a few more in a private function room in the back. They tended to play short and slow. It seemed rather spacious, but maybe that's because I was the only one there. The house cues weren't great, the wood ones were pretty beat up and had slip-on tips while the newer ones were fiberglass coated, so they were a little sticky. The balls weren't bad, probably an intermediate level Aramith set. I noticed quite a bit of chalk dust around, maybe embedded in the cloth or just covering the balls, but I could've passed for smurf hands by the end of my session.
From what I can recall on pricing, it's per hour depending on how many people are playing: $8/hr for 1, $10/hr for 2, $12/hr for 3, and $14/hr for 4. Fri and Sat after 8 pm is $14/hr regardless. Their website lists a couple of hours for free pool (I think Fri 5-7 and Sat 7-9) too.
It's not the easiest place to find, but it's not impossible either. It is behind a strip mall, but the only sign I saw for it was on the west side of the strip mall, so I missed it initially going the other way and had to turn around. And if you get there early enough on a Saturday, apparently they only have fried items on their menu.
When some former colleagues told me we were meeting at the "Wave" for our little reunion I definitely pictured something else entirely. If by some odd chance you end up going here, please be warned your GPS will abandon you before you actually arrive and yes it is located behind a strip mall. Calling the Wave a dive bar is an insult to dive bars around the world. At some point in the night I was expecting Patrick Swayze from Roadhouse to walk through the door.
What you will find at the Wave (besides people who look like they were defeated by life) is very cheap beer, a friendly staff, pool tables, karaoke, and "drunk pizza".
Two dollar draft Bud Heavies, really inexpensive pitchers, plus some good taps for those of us who prefer schnooty beers like Longhammer IPA (one of my favorite IPAs dontcha know). Â Friendly staff, a bunch of locals, a HUGE pool room with darts, golden tee, buck hunter, you name it. Â
Trivia on Sunday nights is homestyle, but the prizes are always great. Â Karaoke is similarly homey, but always funny. Â
There's almost ALWAYS a train-wreck of a girls' party happening here, and plenty of hot townie-on-townie action going on. GREAT people watching. Â
You got your Keno at the bar, and you're all set.
The food is medsa-meds but you didn't come here for the food, did you? You came here because this place is a fun dive bar!
Plenty of TVs for watching the games. Â Odd office park location and the chlorine swimming pool odor in the stairwell only adds to the mystique.
I can proudly say I have sampled the hot dogs and the nachos at the Wave... I had a slice of pizza too once that I vaguely remember. Brian served us it was great. Still questioning the off brand ketchup but when in Rome right?
Moving on... Two dollar Budweiser (AKA Home wreckers, red and white, Bud Heavy) drafts in a Solo cup sounds like a win. I got really wasted and sang karaoke once. Strong drinks, reasonably priced shots from friendly staff... I love the Wave... Be sure to give "The Intimidator" a salute on your way out. DJ Todd on Karaoke as well always a good time.
What?
I moved here from Minnesota in June and I was looking for a local bar, not far from my house that was both welcoming and where I feel safe. The Wave is that place! I come mainly for the karaoke with DJ. Todd Thursday-Saturday nights. It's also fun to come with friends who don't like karaoke because there is a huge pool room in the back. There's something for everyone here. I love this place. Best nights are Fridays and Saturdays. Come on  Thursday if you want to be able to get more songs in at karaoke =)
Review Source:Most weekend nights can be cool. Â Bar is a bit small, but plenty of pool tables. Â The only negative is that they charge per person which I always thought was dumb. Â
Drinks are moderately priced. Â They have karaoke a few nights a week and even on Fridays and Saturdays at night they have free pool. Â I think 5-7 Fridays and 7-9 Saturdays. Â Good college crowd. Â Sticky floors, tough to find location, no waitresses at night and obnoxious college girls are the downfalls. Â Worth a try. Â Maybe you will like it.
