Thanks to Yelp for leading me to this great Southern gem!
If you ever find yourself in South Carolina, D&H is only a short five minute detour from I-95 AND unlike other Christian chicken places, they are open on Sundays! It seems to me that D&H is THE place to hang out with neighbors after Sunday church service because as I was walking in I saw a big mess of Southern ladies in their big church hats on their way out.
There are two ways to order here: from their takeout counter or eat at their buffet which closes down at two pm. The boy and I were in a rush so we decided to go the AYCE route which was a little less than nine dollars a person. The buffet isn't up to Vegas standards per say but they did have a nice selection of home cooking staples such as turnip greens, mac and cheese, potato salad, hush puppies, pulled pork, bbq chicken, fried chicken, banana pudding, red velvet cake ....and funfetti!
This place is REALLY bare bones...they don't even have an ice machine! Instead they serve cool your drink with ice cubes from a mini cooler in the middle of the dining room. But don't let that deter you, this place is a great bang for your buck!
The fried chicken was perfect. Not too greasy with a crispy skin and moist meat. The hush puppies were out of this world and surprisingly not too greasy as well! Rob raved about the pulled pork BBQ and even helped himself to seconds but I found it to be a little bit too vinegary for my taste. Mac and cheese is hands down the best I've ever had (sorry John Legend!).
Our servers included a middle aged lady and a high school aged teenager who were gossiping about Kaye Lynne's auntie's momma's cousin Jamie Lynne from the church which was adorable to listen to. They were very friendly and always made sure that our sweet teas were always topped off.
If I ever found myself in the area, I'd return again!
We LOVE this restaurant and try to eat there once on the way to or from Hilton Head Island (we live in Richmond,VA and have a second home on HHI). Â We have been dining here for the past 15years. Â The staff are friendly, the food is consistent and very good and the buffet is a bargain. Â We always like the pulled pork and sweet potatoes. Â We also feel like we hit the jackpot when the buffet has the fried pork chops. Â just writing this makes me ready to visit again soon
Review Source:Great barbecue. Â The vinegar style was a bit strange for this northerner, but I still liked it. Â Hush puppies were great and so was the corn, and the staff was very friendly. Â Most people get the buffet; we were the only people there, but the food was still great on the buffet. Â The other two meats in the buffet were fried chicken and fried porkchops; that's a bit too much fried food for my liking, but both tasted great.
Review Source:A short detour from I-95 took us to this great bbq joint. We were there for the 7.50 lunch buffet which was all the southern-fried, pulled-pork goodness you could hope for south of the mason dixon.
The bbq is quite vinegary, but delicious if you go easy on the sauce. For dessert, we had the banana pudding and pecan pie, which were excellent. A great break from the usual highway fair. There's also a nice little thrift shop next door in which to wander while you digest.
By the time I got here on my return trip to the North, I was about all barbequed-out. Â We had had barbeque almost every night of the week, so I wasn't looking forward to this. Â It was probably the only non-chain restaurant in the area with great reviews. Â This is as real as it gets. Â Pitchers of sweet tea sit atop folding tables in what looks like a converted VFW. Â The BBQ is all-you-can-eat buffet style behind a wall that divides the kitchen from the dining hall. Â My wife loved the dry BBQ pulled pork, but to me it tasted a bit strange, so I stuck with the hush puppies and fried chicken. Â They had another sauce that was very similar to Indian curry, which was nice at first, but a bit over-powering after a while. We were treated very well by the wait staff, but I definitely felt like a Northerner in a local Southern establishment. Â I would recommend that you at least try it to see what SC BBQ is really like. Â They could do a bit better with cleanliness, but the food is quick to turnover, so I don't think you're at risk of any food-borne illnesses.
Review Source:We stopped in here yesterday to fuel up our stomachs for the long drive up to DC. Â We had the puppies with us so we got take out and had a little tailgate party in their parking lot. Â They also had three rocking chairs on their front porch that looked pretty comfy as well. Â My boyfriend went inside to get the food and came back with what he called two "snacks". Â They were actually huge platters of pulled pork, one with cole slaw and one with potato salad. Â He also asked for a couple of buns so we could make some sammiches. Â Like Josh A. mentioned, the side sauce had a little bit of a bite to it. Â I've never had pulled pork that was in such big chunks, I needed to tear mine up a bit more to make it bite sized. Â They don't have fries or beans, which are normally my bbq side staples. The cole slaw tasted really fresh and light while the potato salad had a super strong mayo/mustard flavor to it (I really liked it). Â Both platters also came with hushpuppies, which were heaven, the best I'd ever had, I even briefly considered fighting my boyfriend for his. Â My boyfriend said the employees were super friendly and for $13 we had enough food for four meals. Â It's a short hop off 95 and well worth it if you want to get away from all the fast food chains.
Review Source:Normally, I'm not too big into the vinegar based sauces, which is what D & H serves. Â I will say, that it was pretty good though. Â It had a nice little bite to it, thinking about it makes me sweat. Â It funny, because I was annoyed that it was making me sweat, but I couldn't stop eating it. Â Their sides weren't too bad either. Â Good mac and cheese, green beans, and slaw. Â Sweet tea was pretty good too. Â Was surprised to find out they cook it electronically.
Review Source:It is my husbands favorite bbq place in south carolina. They have all you can eat buffet like most bbq places here. The food is limited to 10 items. The pulled pork was ok. I had some fat in mine. I went back for seconds on the hash. sweet tea was the best thing there. sweet potato cassole was next.
