Daddy Jones is a great place to have some dinner and cocktail.
The restaurant is run by Dimitra.
I'm being specific for a reason; The place has character and focus.
Everything in the restaurant has it's place: fancy antique cocktail glasses, wood place-mats, 'Thank You' cards enclose your check, the dishware is interesting and rotates often. The ice cubes are huge and clear.
Attention is paid to detail. It's focused in it's execution.
The drink list and food menu are 'small' in that regard. If you need a huge menu to choose from, this likely isn't your spot. This place is about a small menu, done well.
However, the bar is well stocked and possesses bottles of things you won't likely find elsewhere. If you like cocktails and absinthe, you should check it out...
The bar staff is worthy of a following. Simone, Courtney, and Stephanie are all great in their ability to work the bar. Patient with the indecisive and always willing to make you something special or sample what's on draft.
They recently started doing brunch as well and frankly I'd rather not discuss it.
It's great, and never crowded. I have no idea why you would wait outside Sound Bites down the street.
Usual order:
Chicken Souvlaki extra Tzatziki , or
Greek Salad - I'm not normally a salad person.
Dessert:
St. George Absinthe
Dear Daddy Jones,
I was a bit sad. Â I had stumbled into many Somerville establishments and I have been greeted with hipster grins, lots of plaid and a mild amount of attitude (it's expected and a-ok).
I waltzed, well, kinda walked, into your place. Â I was hungry. Â I needed a seat at the bar and I was Jonesin' for a brew.
I was greeted with a huge smile by the attentive bartender (SIMONE). Â Menu in hand within minutes of sitting down in the cool bar area I ordered up a beer. Â Please and thank you's were flying across the bar so much that I thought I may have magically been transported down South. Â
The appetizers are all delightful. Â My favorite is the Pita and Dip with whipped feta and roasted red peppers that have just enough kick to them. Â The drink list is great and the cocktails are served up with ease and attentiveness.
The atmosphere completely kicks all kinds of bootay. Â From the hand written thank you notes with your tab to the games sprawled out on the bar...I loved it. Â The dim lighting is perfect and the music gives a nod to the 90's.
Overall, love this place. Â Absolutely will be a frequent here.
Xo
A-Team (hey, PLL was on tonight)
I took my mother to Daddy Jones for mother's day after my 2 bartender roommates told me they had heard good things about it. I could not have been happier with the experience we had. I e-mailed the restaurant ahead of time and the owner, Dimitra, responded to all of my questions extremely quickly. Â We made reservations for sunday brunch. Not that we're a competitive family, but my mother's meal was declared the winner of mother's day brunch with the Mac Daddy mac n cheese dish which she ordered alongside a strawberry and watermelon sorbet mimosa. More the beer fans, my father and i had no problem ordering off their delicious beer menu. I loved the decor and the fact that Bill Cosby, figure skating, and some sort of vaudeville act were on the different TVs made my inner child so happy. Not to mention Otis Redding and Tom Jones were played back to back at one point during my meal. We were able to talk to Dimitra about the restaurant and she was so incredibly personable and friendly. I'm honestly already thinking of excuses to go back. To quote my dad, "if i had a tail, it would be waggin."
Review Source:I've been here exactly twice, both times to grab a drink - sadly, never to eat - but I can attest that the wine selection is good (and not crazy expensive), and the beers aren't shabby either.
Vibe is enjoyably cozy - hipstery-ish, I guess - it has the requisite amnt of exposed brick and bartenders w/ tats - on the weekends it gets loud enough that you have to speak quite loudly to be heard - but on the weekdays it's a dream. Haven't had a problem getting a table either time - though it's tiny, so I'm sure that it can get cray if the time is right.
I'd take a friend/date/lover/rando you met on the T here - probably not my grandmother.
The cocktail list here is really fun; most recently, I had the pleasure to imbibe a glass full of dill infused gin (which came with a skewer of good crunchies on top).
The menu is limited, but includes quality items and the service is extraordinarily attentive for a busy bar. This is one of the few destination spots in the Medford area.
First thing that'll strike you: awkward space. Those responsible for working with the cumbersome, Manhattan-esque "use it or lose it" layout gave Daddy Jones a very comfortable, very Somerville end design. Kudos!
Slinging a limited menu of house cocktails (many featuring infusions and heavy on bourbon) and an equally streamlined array of Greek inspired plates, you might not consider Daddy Jones as a spot for a meal. It'll pop up as "that Magoun Square bar that serves Greek food," further proven by the shoulder-to-shoulder spread on stools, while tables sat empty during peak hours.
May have misstepped choosing the Dirty Dill Infused Gin ($9), as it's definitely a one-trick pony. Nothing subtle and hardly balanced, the cocktail is a glass of floral brine with a pickled green bean and olive garnish (they've struck the cornichon). The lasting sentiment: "I ordered it to order it, and now I can say I have." But never again.
The fried zucchini ($6) is a comfortable start, with the humble squash getting a jet boost from the amazing skordalia, a garlicky dip of pureed potatoes, almonds and quality oil. We saved what was left for my Fish & Fries ($14) - a sizable filet of beer battered haddock, average spuds and a very nice housemade tartar sauce. Our polite and on-point server Alipio promised crunch, but the batter proved too thick and slightly undercooked, leading to the dreaded doughnut layer between filet and crust. Needless to say, it fell apart quickly.
The Huxtables on one TV, March Madness on another and Miami Vice rocking a third, I'll gladly pull up a seat at a smart, feel-good addition to Magoun's off-T strip of promise. But it'll be for a Manhattan Mix Tape and a bar snack - the dinner scene just doesn't have me crying for Daddy.
I moved to Magoun Square just about a year ago, and Daddy Jones opened up not too long ago but I already know this is just what Magoun needed. Â It's otherwise a place full of sports/dive bars. Â
The beer selection is great and the prices are reasonable ($6 IPA, okay!). Â The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. Â I enjoy the vintage decor and definitely, the Cosby show will suck you right in! Â If you're there on the hour you can experience the beauty and nostalgia of the working cuckoo clock, too :)
I stopped in for lunch and they were only serving a brunch menu... okay, I say, sure to find something and i did. The Chicken Souvlaki wrap. According to the menu:
Skewers (note the S, as in plurla), Tomato, Tzatziki, fries all for $9.
Sounds good. What I got was a plateful of fries, 1 skewer of the tiniest bits of chicken and several see through slices of tomato. The Tzatziki was a thin saucy dressing and; I had to ask for more. While what I had was good, the portion was rediculous for the price. Maybe I should have had eggs!
I think their stuffed eggplant might be my new favorite thing.
Daddy Jones is quite a hike from my Inman apt, but it was a very nice day, so we thought we'd take a leisurely walk up to DJ for some food and bevs. We weren't super hungry so we split the stuffed eggplant (WOW) and lamb skewers (also delicious). It was a tough call because everything on the menu sounded awesome. Their offerings are different than the typical items you see at similar cocktail lounge-type restaurants. We'll definitely be back to try other things on the menu.
The cocktail with grapefruit juice and gin was very refreshing. Prices are also fair for the quality. Check it out!
I live in Magoun Square and love the area - that was, I did until Daddy Jones moved in. It's more pretentious than any bar/restaurant I've been to in the Back Bay area. The people who visit this place are over the top obnoxious, the bartenders think they're too cool to serve you, and the drinks are disgusting.
I want Lil Vinny's back.
I finally realized what has always been missing from my bar experiences: classic 80s TV shows on mute.
While I never had an affinity for Miami Vice, Daddy Jones stands out from nearly every other bar in Boston by simply having something on the tube besides NESN. This relative newcomer is modestly decorated with lots of vintage glassware lining re-purposed locker shelves, but still with a modern feel overall. The cocktail list upon first glance seems to skew to sweeter drinks, but the Dirty Dill Infused Gin is made for people like me who have been known to drink pickle juice straight. Lip puckering amounts of olive brine and dilly gin, garnished with a cornichon, olive, and pickled green bean is exactly how I want a martini. The ingredient list didn't inspire me to try the Grape Crush until I saw a few of them made while seated at the bar. Muddled grapes and lemon, cognac, framboise, topped with Cava, this cocktail was surprisingly balanced and still was reminiscent of its namesake in the best way possible.
The Greek inspired food menu is broken up into Starters: Finger Foods and In Between, and Fork and Knife. Â I assumed the small plate of smoked herring would be just that, but the portion was pretty impressive: a large dish of intensely salty, crispy bits of herring in lemon olive oil with fried capers, lemon, and grilled romaine. The meatballs (4 to an order) were large and tender, though the tomato sauce was nothing exceptional. The pork souvlaki special featured tender marinated chunks of pig with sweet potato fries rolled inside in addition to a healthy serving on the side as well.
Having only stopped in on low-key Wednesday evenings, the service has always been attentive, friendly, and efficient. I'm usually a creature of habit in my own neighborhood, but Daddy Jones is a good reason to hop a bus up to Magoun for some inventive food, tasty drinks, and pop culture discussions stemming from Theo Huxtable's ear piercing rebellion.
This place had been recommended to me by a friend of mine who is very much into dining out, so I was eager to give it a go. I remember looking over the dinner menu and deciding there wasn't much that caught my eye (I'm vegetarian, and I think there were limited options) so we went for Sunday brunch instead.
The food was great! I had a giant portion of french toast with whipped cream and fruit for $7 which was awesome. Cocktails were a little pricey for how small they were, but they looked great when they came out, and I know they infuse a lot of the vodkas etc on-site which is cool, but since I didn't try one I can't tell you what they were like. Waitress was also very attentive and super friendly, which was nice.
The BIG downside to me about this place is the way the coffee thing is set up. You buy your meal and cocktails etc from the waitress/bar but have to go to a separate guy for your coffee. Ok, this is fine, but the coffee was $3 a pop, (and $3 for an espresso, making a red-eye $6... waaay too expensive) and had no free refills. He also has to be paid separately which is kind of strange. Coffee is an essential part of the brunch experience for me, and I just didn't like this. If it were all included on one tab, and was a bit cheaper, that would be sweet, but why would I pay $6 for 2 morning coffees with brunch when most places will do unlimited refills for say $2.50?
I've been meaning to check out this spot for a while but am rarely in the area. Â Finally Saturday night I stopped by with a few friends around 11pm, the place wasn't packed but it had enough people and just the way I like it. Â I noticed the awesome music they were playing (old school rap) and Dougie Howser on the TV and I loved it. Â It reminded me of all the cool spots in SF that play 80's music while watching old school tv shows!!!
I was hungry so I proceeded to order the steak tips with grilled string beans and roasted potatoes. Â The steak was a little over cooked even though I ordered it medium but it was still good and had a peppery taste to it. Â The veggies were great addition to the meal, grilled and seasoned well and the roasted potatoes were huge and cooked great. Â I ordered the dill gin martini and it was yummy! Â It was accompanied by olives, pickles and pickled onions and I love pickled veggies.
I also loved the decor at the bar where the bottle are stored and glasses, super cool and different!
I can't wait to come back and sit at the bar and enjoy what this little gem has to offer.
Stopped by around 11:30 on a Saturday night. I was thrilled to see we could get a table for 4 right away. Other than that the place was pretty full. This is not a big place. It seems to have an 80's theme to it. Everything from the Doogie Howser marathon to what sounded like the Grand Theft Auto 3 soundtrack (based in the 80's). I really liked the vibe in here. While the menu for food and drinks was not expansive everything was good and so was the price point.
Bourbon Spoon - chilled bourbon with some bitters. There is also a spoonful of a marshmallow/frosting like substance called Mastiha
Sex on the Beach - Their take on the classic girly drink has quite a kick to it. It has a spicy bite to it
Mac Daddy - Their take on mac 'n' cheese. It comes topped with thick chunks of crispy bacon and tomatoes that are roasted in the dish. Anything with crispy bacon I fully endorse eating. This was no exception.
New hot spot in the neighborhood! Their food is great (try the chicken wrap or their spanakopita!) and their bartenders are all really nice and friendly! (Complete opposite of those across the street at Magoun's Saloon... ) Only downfall is the place is kind of small. Better for a date night with your significant other than for large groups. Great ambiance with dim lighting and a cool modern feel. Definitely check it out!
Review Source:I was instantly sold on Daddy Jones once I read a review via Urban Daddy that 80s tv shows were played here on loop. The nostalgia for such delights as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and the Cosby Show, as well as the menu, lured me all the way from Brighton to the boondocks of Maguan Sq in Somerville.
Upon finding this mysterious Square in the bowels of Somerville I was intrigued by Daddy Jones, but slightly put off by the obnoxious hipsters that refused to move out of the door way despite my repeated "excuse mes." After a shove or two thrown their way I made it to the host and was told it was a 30-60 minute wait. They took my number and told me they'd call me when the table was ready. I headed across the street for a drink. Thank goodness I decided to eat there because the Daddy Jones' assholes NEVER CALLED ME BACK!
No wonder this place is in the middle of nowhere Somerville rather than Downtown or Backbay.
Good luck to ya, Daddy Jones. You definitely need it.
I can't speak for the food, but everytime my fiance and I go, the drinks are impeccable, the staff are genuinely friendly, and I absolutely adore how the always have 90's tv on the tube. Can't get enough of that Cosby Show. The ambiance is very comfy too; classy without being stifling. My favorite drink to order is the Harvey Wallbanger. It comes with an orange juice ice cube I get to push around my glass while making doe-eyes at my boytoy. Glad to have this in the neighborhood!!
Review Source:Our go-to neighborhood spot. Â Everything we've eaten (which is like 2/3rds the menu) has been delicious and all of our drinks have been tasty. Â Plus, the service is awesome. Â Example - our first two times were like two months apart, but, our waiter remembered us. Â The most recent time we went, we talked to the owner for a bit too. Â Every time we go, we have great food, great drinks, and awesome service. Â What is not to love? Â It is everything I want in a neighborhood spot!
Ok, for balance, one negative. Â $6 for a Harpoon Winter Warmer is a little steep, as are most of their beer prices in comparison to the area.
Wow. Â I'm not kidding--I think that DJ might be my new neighborhood hangout over Highland Kitchen. Â I KNOW.
First of all, DJ is a little out of the way unless you live on the Somerville/Medford line. Â Don't expect easy parking...but you can take the bus up Broadway if you're coming from the Powder House Circle area.
1) I love the vibe at DJ. Â They have nice little tables in front of the bar area, and then some hightop tables farther back. Â The decor is awesome and, GUYS: they were playing episodes of Doogie Howser off Hulu!
2) The drinks we all had were super good. Â They do a special whiskey infusion for their Manhattans, which gets switched up regularly. Â I had their Manhattan Mixed Tape (well, two of them) and an Old Fashioned. Â Both superb. Â My date enjoyed the beer selection and got a few beers along with the dill-infused gin drink. Â STRONG. Â Excellent if you like dill pickles.
3) The waitress/bartender was the http://bomb.com. Â She was super friendly and accommodating. Â (I had friends that showed up after I'd eaten dinner, and she let us move to a larger highboy at the back of the restaurant.)
4) Food? Â Delish! Â My date got the classic fish and chips. Â I got the chicken wrap. Â
I really can't wait to go back and stumble the mile home again soon!
I literally just left this place and was so disgusted I had to write a review. Here's my story. I just walked in for a drink with my girlfriend. We ordered the bourbon spoon and the Harvey Wallbanger. Both drinks sounded pretty interesting on the menu. Ours were disgusting. I'm not blaming the drinks here I'm calling out the management. Here's why. I watched a bartender mix a cocktail and put it into one of the many styles of glass at her disposal. To her credit, using all this weird glassware would make any bartenders job hard. She misjudged how much of the drink would fit in the glass and when she realized there was too much ice she proceeded to pick the ice out of the drink with her fingers. She then completed the drink with garnish and put it on the service bar. Her colleagues, who obviously don't trust her work, proceeded to taste the drinks she just made. The gross part is they drank it as if it was their drink, as in mouth on the rim of the glass. Once they decided the drinks weren't good, they tried to modify the drink. In the end the customer ended up with a drink with 2 ice cubes towering over the top of the glass as well as the saliva of the daddy Jones staff. For the record bartenders SHOULD taste their work by putting a clean straw in the drink, placing a finger over the top and transferring the drink to their mouth. That's what the health department likes to call sanitary. I paid my $19 tab and I left a 20% tip because honestly I don't think the staff knows any better and they shouldn't suffer because the management put them in that position.
Review Source:THIS PLACE IS AWESOME! Without fail this is always one of my stops every time I go out....and most of the time I just stay there the whole night. The music is fun( 90's!), the staff is upbeat and very obviously love to work there and the owner is the sweetest person ever. Not only that, the food is soooooo good. Try the marinated olives, stuffed eggplant or the fried zucchini. You won't be disappointed. Â
Now on to the drinks. I forget what it's called, but my favorite is a drink with apple cider, prosecco and other goodies and it's served in a little bottle. It's like an adult juice box with a hot pink straw. Â YUM!
I love how the place is decorated. It is a space that makes you want to have a great time. With funny signs up on the walls and cool little knick knacks all over. Very welcoming. Â
I will go back again and again.
Could not wait to try this place since it opened and finally did a couple nights ago. I got wine, and the others got a manhattan mix tape. although our table was off to the side, i was happy to see that the bar was packed and i loved the atmosphere- small and cozy. We ordered the pita and dip and phyllo to start- all terrific and almost bizarre that we could get such authentic greek food at such a young fun bar. For the main course, we each got the lamb skewers- delicious and filling. Between this and old magoun's saloon, i see little reason to venture all the way to Davis Square when I have great places right nearby (maybe now the traffic will be leaving the square and coming here?)
Review Source:So I wanted to tell you all about my new favorite resto/bar in Somerville- Daddy Jones.
I love me some Greek-American fare any day of the week and there are plenty options on the menu. Â May I recommend for you the roasted stuffed eggplant, fried zucchini and of course chicken souvlaki wrap with tzatziki (I dare you to say that three times in a row). Â Finish with ice cream topped with cherries. Â
The portions are generous, like Greek mother trying to feed you generous.
Come for the Mac Daddy (mac 'n cheese and bacon!) and stay for episodes of The Cosby Show playing on the tv. Â
Also it doesn't hurt that it's stumbling distance to my parent's place, allowing me to relieve my teenage years all over again. Win-win.
We'd heard about this place for a while and decided to give them a few weeks to sort out the kinks. Â I typically don't like going to a restaurant right after it opens but this place was pretty damn good. Â
We showed up around 8 on a Friday night and found two seats at the bar. Â By the way, there's plenty of parking at the CVS across the street if you don't live within walking distance. Â We'd never been there when it was Lil Vinny's so we were a little surprised at how small it was but it seemed laid out pretty well. Â
The bar isn't huge but the decor was interesting and the drinks were pretty damn good. Â She got a Blue Hawaiian that the bartender told us was made with blue Jolly Ranchers. Â I thought that was pretty cool and the drink was pretty tasty. Â I enjoy how they had Pretty Things Jack D'or on draft. Â Way to keep it local. Â
The bartender was super nice and always on top of his game. Â When he noticed the kitchen forgot our appetizers, he apologized and then they were in front of us within 2 minutes. Â Good enough for me.
Apps were pretty good. Â We went with the olives and zucchini. Â Zucchini app was huge and really tasty. Â
For entree's we went with the lamb skewer and mac'n cheese. Â To be honest, we weren't all that hungry after a couple drinks and apps but they were good stuff. Â Only critique of the mac n cheese would be a little bread crumb on top. Â Bacon and tomato was good but a little crunch never hurts when it comes to mac n cheese. Â
Overall, we'll be back because we live close by. Â But even if we weren't we'd add it to the rotation. Â It's unique and a fun time.
So I have this Greek friend. And she likes to eat. So to Daddy Jones we went. It's an interesting little place in Magoun Square in Somerville, recently opened and sort of chic. Pretty cool little place. We had drinks (DJ amber ale by Opa Opa - I quite enjoyed it), appetizers (pita and dip - typical), food (stuffed eggplant - super tasty and chicken souvlaki wrap - also really good) and finished with dessert (pumpkin flan - incredible). And to top it off, the music was good and our waitress was quite a looker.
I highly recommend this place, hard to go wrong
After much anticipation I finally stopped over to Daddy Jones to find a beautifully designed bar, with drinks and a beers selection to match. Â I think it's a great addition to the area and is a nice compliment to Old Magoun's Saloon across the street. Â The staff is outstandingly responsive and know their stuff. Â No waiting for a refill despite the fact that the bar was busy. Â Plus there were old Cosby Show episodes playing in the background. Â Need I say more??? Â
Overall I give this new spot a 2 thumbs up and I'm sure they'll be getting to know my face around there. Â I've yet to try the food, but the menu looks really smart and I'm looking forward to it.
Yay Daddy Jones!
After much anticipation, a lot of hype, and what seemed like a very long delay, Daddy Jones has finally opened its doors to the public a few weeks ago in what previously was Little Vinny's, a family-owned and operated Italian joint. They had a long period of soft opening where Medford-native Maria Menounos named it one of her choice hangouts - something that apparently was supposed to set high expectations for everyone.
Upon walking in, one thing that people will notice is how different this place is. It's a very unique space and a very unique bar. The decor is minimal and yet it looks like it was carefully picked to create an inviting setting - There's two televions near the front, which are slightly dimmed and play sports while the lonely TV in the back is playing the Cosby Show. Apparently that show still had a following - I had no idea. Overall the simplicity of it makes it awesome. There's a few quirky touches to it as well, like a few metallic lockers behind the bar that serve as shelves for the various glassware they use and there's also a coocoo clock against the wall.
It's not all that spacious in there and yet it never feels cramped, even on its busiest of times. I've been able to snag a spot at the bar and also in the back, on a high top and I can say that my experience at the bar was much more enjoyable and featured much better service.
The concept of the bar is quite original and far from generic as they've strived to re-create some of the classic cocktails like the Grey Hound and the Blue Hawaiian, but often times have been able to do so with a unique twist. Their cocktail list features eight distinctive cocktails and they also are able to create others based on taste and what's in demand. I've had their Grey Hound and found it to be quite tasty and the fiancee enjoyed her drinks as well. One my latest trip there, I had a dirty vodka martini which wasn't nearly as good... however... one thing that they seem to excel at is bar bites. It's a Greek-themed food menu (the owner is Greek) and they have things like stuffed phylo, roasted baby eggplant, olives and even lamb skewers.
I've been able to get two items from their finger food section, the fries ($4) and the fried zucchini ($5) and both were actually really tasty, especially the latter which blew us away. The value was terrific and the flavors were great as well. I'm sure that the rest of the menu, while a bit limited, is great as well. They also have a minimal but pretty good beer list (although not nearly as good as Old Magoun's Saloon across the street) but then again, they are more of a cocktail bar than a beer bar so....
Service the first time was very friendly and knowledgable but the second time around our waiter wasn't very attentive, slow and not all that friendly. Guess they're still working the kinks out...
All in all, I was pretty impressed and look forward to returning for a real meal there and for some more drinks. While I'll always be a bit sad at the fact that Little Vinny's is gone, I couldn't think of a better establishment to replace it with. Welcome to the neighborhood!
FINALLY a restaurant in Boston that uses garlic and salt in their food. Why so bland, Boston?
Sweet features: good mix-drinks and a limited-but-solid beer selection, cool decor, good service, awesome throwback TV shows (Cosby Show when I was there), and 90s jams playing overhead.
Candy Rain by Soul For Real came on... seriously. It's legit.
BUT, like I said, GARLIC AND SALT. And fried food. Get the fried zucchini. The Mac Daddy is ridiculous. It has pork belly and comte in it. Get it. And the Grilled Sausage Sandwich is a delicious mess. The Dirty Dill Infused Gin kicked this beer-drinker's ass, so I passed it off to my BF - it still tasted amazing, I'm just a wimp. I stole his Grey Hound and it was killer. Prices are good, too.
It's a pretty small place, and as another reviewer remarked, the layout they went with isn't the most space efficient. There's NO standing room if you just want to grab a drink and hang. I saw quite a few people grab drinks, stand awkwardly/uncertainly in a corner, and then leave because it was uncomfortable.
It's good and close to my house. Go spend your money here so it doesn't shut down.
Daddy Jones is a nice addition to the neighborhood as someplace that you can grab a bite or a glass of wine. Â I've been now once on a week night for dinner and once on opening weekend for a drink. Â
On the weekend it was evident that the layout of this long narrow place was a bit lacking. Â No good standing room if you couldn't snag a seat at the bar or table. Â Also in the space that used to be the entrance to Lil Vinny's but is now a strange 2-person bar is not well designed or used. Â I didn't understand why they chose to lay it out that way because its a huge waste of space.
On the weekday it was much better because it wasn't as crowded. You could chill at the bar or at a table, watching the Cosby show. Â They have a very limited menu. The food is definitely an after thought here. And while its nice to have a place that doesn't give you giant portions of greasy bar food - I wouldn't say the food is anything special.
TL;DR: Cool decor, nice drinks, not too expensive - NO SPORTS ON TV's. Woo hoo!
Daddy Jones recently replaced an Italian restaurant called "Lil Vinny's". Â Vinny's was in my opinion an ugly place that served "cafeteria-style" Italian foods. Â There are people that raved about it and now are hating on Yelp because Daddy Jones replaced it.
Having said that, Daddy Jones is NOTHING like Little Vinny's. Â It's modern, clean and 'fun'. Â The drinks are very creative and the prices very reasonable. Â Typical menu coctails rane from $8-$12 and drought beers between $5 - $7.
Most of the restaurant is taken up by the long bar, however there are tables as well. Â This place definitely feels like a bar and and hang out place where you can grab food, rather than a restaurant.
The best thing about this place is: they are not showing sports on TV. Â Oh god.. thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Â I don't have anything against sports, but every bar in Somerville does this including more upscale places like Highland Kitchen. Â It's really nice to be in a place that doesn't show sweaty guys from 43 screens. Â Instead of sports they show 80's shows like "21 Jump Street" and "Cosby Show"
One recommendation is that there no vegetarian entree on the menu. Â I'm assuming that they are still getting started over there and will probably add something soon. Â Until then we will probably eat across the road at Magoun Saloon (that has a couple veg options) and then come to Daddy's for a drink.
I am very very disappointed at Daddy Jones. Being a big fan of Lil Vinnys for years I thought I would try out who replaced them. First of all the set up in that place is horrible you look like your walking into a dungeon and it is very small. There are a couple of tables and then the bar area in the far back. We walk in to support the new business and immediately get told there is no room at the bar to go across the street and try back later. HELLO!!! Who the hell says something like that on their opening day! Trust me I will never go back there again and I will tell all my friends and family don't bother going in there either. They are not accomadating to their customers what so ever. I will not support this business! BRING BACK LIL VINNYS!!!!!!!!! By the way the don't even deserve one star but I wasn't allowed to give them none!
Review Source:I was going to wait to review Daddy Jones until I'd been a few times, but I feel like I have to combat the one star review left here. As a Magoun Square native, I've been waiting for this place to open for quite some time. Though I was surprised to see how small the space is (looks bigger from the outside), I think it's laid out well. I love the decor and chill atmosphere. Oh and the music is super fun. I came with 4 other people and the staff was very accomodating, letting us smoosh around a table probably intended for two. We ordered several drinks (Grey Hound-yum! Wine cooler-yummier!) and just about everything on the food menu. The food was all AMAZING. I've been dreaming about the phyllo triangles ever since! And don't miss the mac & cheese-so good. Was the service perfect? No. Was it their first night? Yes. Everybody had a smile on their face and apologized when anything was slower than it should have been. We even got some free bread and olive oil since it was kind of slow. I suspect in a week or so they'll have the service glitches ironed out.
I'm really glad to see a fun, laid back place like Daddy Jones move into my neighborhood. I can't wait to become a regular.
I showed up at Daddy Jones the first night it opened...literally 5 hours after they opened their doors. We walked in to a lively, funky and warm atmosphere. Â The bar was lively and every table was full. Â We ordered a drink at the bar and before we were finished our table was ready. Â From the menu we decided to try an array of items ~ the warm olives and pita - the olives were enhanced by an essence of orange rind - very tasty (We didn't leave one olive un-eaten), next we had the home made and hand rolled spanikopita - outstanding, light and flaky and then we finished off with the lamb entree ~ a skewer of perfectly cooked, seasoned and presented lamb, accompanied by delicious rice, grilled eggplant and zucchini. Â Unusual for a restaurant to score such high praise on Opening Night. Â First rate service, atmosphere and food!
