My friends and I randomly walked in this restaurant on a rainy Monday. We ordered a lot of foods on special menu for share. The portion for the spinach salad was huge and it was absolutely delicious. We also had pasta, but it came with orange flavor I was not into it that much. However, we had chicken risotto. They cooked it with wine and it was spectacular. The server was helpful. We had rum banana with coconut ice cream as dessert afterwards. I would highly recommend this place.
Review Source:Meh. Â I've experienced better. Â Some parts were ok. Â Most were meh. Â over all, perhaps a 3. Â Undistinguished, to give you a one word oxymoron (another one word oxymoron). Â
More on the high end of moderate. Â Worth going to if you have good company, otherwise, I think there are better.
I love Daedalus. Â It's a fantastic dual hybrid: Â restaurant/bar, outdoor/indoor. Â You can come here any night of the week and stand a decent chance of snagging one of the outdoor tables on what I believe is Harvard Square's only commercial roof deck (let me know if there are any others, cause I want to visit those too). Â But, in the event that it starts raining, or the deck is packed, you can always step back inside and have a good time on the generous second-floor bar area. Â The food is solid -- classic Cambridge new American pub fare.
Bottom line: Â Daedalus with friends on a summer night is unbeatable. Â Enjoy the breeze, Â look out over the rooftops of Cambridge, and feel happy you're alive.
Came here a few times with friends - each times was such a delicious experience! The Grilled Spicy Steak Salad and the Steak Tip Risotto (which was on the day's specials menu?) are absolutely delicious! The meats were juicy and tender, and the dish as a whole was interesting and full of complimentary flavors. It's kind of hard to find and it's a bit a ways from the square and not close to much else, but it has a nice, mellow atmosphere, while still being bustling. The service I've gotten was wonderful - the waiters were super patient and really friendly! More than likely I'll be going again :)
Review Source:First, the roof-top bar is ideal for warm weather. I associate Daedalus so strongly with its bar that it was only recently that I thought to eat here. I went for lunch, and the food was surprisingly good. The menu is reasonably price, and the service was fine. I had expected typical bar food, but the quality was much better. And of course, the beer with lunch was great.
Review Source:well we went here as we saw it listed as an irish pub.....well, it isn't.....this is really a college hang out and it was pretty busy for brunch/lunch recently....we sat at the bar and the bartender was very pleasant...average age in the place was about 40 and then we left and it became 25.....not sure about all the good ratings, staff was very pleasant, Â physically it needs work, carpet is torn in places and it does not look all that clean, martini was good but overpriced (not very big for the price), burger was ok but not worth the rate and the salmon on a bagel was worth about half what was charged.....so
high priced
un note worthy food
not real neat looking inside
pleasant waitstaff
a really great looking outside deck upstairs but of course it was snow covered and getting more added to it when we were there
not worth a return visit
Daedalus is a cool restaurant that had pretty decent food (we both got Mexican scrambled eggs, which were good), my lady friend had a Mimosa (she felt it wasn't much for the cost) and I had some tea. Overall I enjoyed the decor and the music the most, our waitress was pretty cool, and the food was solid, but nothing to write home about.
Review Source:If you like to drink at 10am, and I'm not saying I do.. Okay, I'm totally saying I do.
Anyway, if you like to drink at 10am but also seek delicious breakfast fare to prevent you from getting weird looks from other patrons who are thinking, "why the hell is that looney drinking at 10am?" -- Daedalus is your place.
Came here on a weekend for brunch with friends. We had an unconfirmed group size but they accommodated us gracefully, even when we all showed up at different times and spent a while catching up before ordering.
My aforementioned 10am drink was a pink grapefruit mimosa, which was pretty darn good.
The place was empty, which surprised me because I figured brunch would be hopping. Maybe the Harvard students were saving their pennies that weekend.. or afraid of snow.. or there was an alien abduction on campus the night before.. whatever the case may be (and my bet is the last one), it was very quiet. We got good attention but not overly pressuring. The table we were at was a nice, private booth-y near the bar and the bathroom upstairs. It could have easily seated several more, but it still felt intimate for the five of us that were there.
My food was really good -- I had the breakfast burrito and it was filling and healthy. Lots of fresh vegetables and the eggs were cooked perfectly well. My only complaint is it was SO hot when it was served and I wanted it so badly. I suffered second degree mouth burns to quell my growling tummy.
Our whole crowd seemed to enjoy their breakfasts, even a self-proclaimed "picky" eater who got the steak and eggs. One friend got a dish with the refried beans, and as any good friend would do, I forked some off of her plate. HOLY SALT! Which is too bad, because they were the GOOD kind of refried beans that are nice and dark so you know they were made fresh not canned Old El Paso junkola. Seriously, I thought she had poisoned her beans as to prevent my thieving ways, but noooo, they actually came that way.
Overall, we really enjoyed ourselves, the food, and the early morning adult beverages. I would come back to Daedalus for breakfast and maybe even try a different meal there! Bean-free, of course.
I come to this place pretty often on a night out. Tom the bartender on the second floor is wonderful! Last time I didn't know what to get and he made me this ginger beer/cucumber cocktail that was absolutely delicious! On a cold night, their hot cider is also delicious.
There's also an outdoor deck thats awesome for hanging on in warmer weather. There's heating lamps installed over the outdoor area so it would be fine in spring/early fall weather.
I've never been here during the day/tried their food, but at least for an evening hang out spot this place is great! The atmosphere is really good, I think partially due to the layout of the venue - not too small but not so spacious as to seem empty. And everyone is just chilling from my experience :)
I came for brunch. Their special eggs Benedict with the salmon and avocado was ok. The OJ was sour, like it was expired. The iced tea was ok. The Cobb salad was ok.
The roof deck was nice because the weather was nice.
But food was uninspiring overall, at least for me. I like fresh squeezed juices or something like that for brunch... But nothing like that here.
Food was 2.5 stars. Service was meh. Roof deck was 4 stars.
Having the Harvard campus on my Boston itinerary led me to research fun, local places to eat. I try to avoid chain restaurants as much as possible, so when I saw so many good reviews for Daedalus I knew it was a good option.
Essentially located on the Harvard campus, Daedalus is a perfect brunch spot for visitors. It is a 2-story building that gets plenty of sunlight through the windows. It's a very comfortable dining space with friendly people. They also have a roof deck which I was hoping to utilize, but it was so cold when I was there that wasnt an option.
The food was pretty good, although nothing spectacular. I would have appreciated a larger portion size for my huevos rancheros (see photo). That dish was good, but the black beans were very tasty.
Overall, I liked this place. I wished I had a chance to sample more menu items and sit on the roof deck. I think 3.5 stars is probably a more appropriate rating for this place--I certainly wouldnt mind going back there.
Pros: Location near the Harvard campus, comfortable dining space, roof deck
Cons: Small portion sizes compared to price points, slightly better than average food
Live around the corner, go here regularly, most recently this morning:
Pluses:
+ Generally solid food
+ Beautiful roof deck, love being out there whenever I possibly can. Seriously, SIT ON THE ROOF DECK. I think it's the best outdoor seating in Harvard Square.
+ Saturday brunch! And what's more--usually really easy to get a table for brunch, whether it's Saturday or Sunday!
Minuses:
- Uninspired cocktails. I don't expect every place to be Drink or Craigie in terms of mixology, but I feel like Daedalus is aspiring to gastropubittude, and it falls pretty far short.
- Kitchen closes at 10:30. So much for your late night bar snacks.
- Food is not always quite reliable--I've been in parties with "rare" steaks that were cooked through, and "poached" eggs that were closer to hard boiled.
- Weirdly, they always (and only) have strawberry jam for your english muffin, and it's in those little packets that remind me of diners. Huh.
Overall, I like going here, and I would recommend the Not-Your-Average-Benedict. The roof deck is a wonderful place to hang out on. It's not expensive for Harvard Square, and the service is generally nice, if not overwhelming. But don't expect more than a fun neighborhood restaurant.
Food was delicious, staff was friendly, outside patio was relaxing on a nice night.
But they were really anal about outside seating: Â Absolutely no groups over 5 people (we were 6), even though there are a bunch of tables in a row - how hard would it be to slide two of them together? Â Or squish one more to a table of 5 (which we were willing to do)?
Rooftop deck and eggs benedict on a cloudy, but let's-pretend-it's-sunny day. I liked my eggs benedict, but it'd be a bit of a stretch to say it was one of the best I've ever had.
I've been here a few times before for drinks, and left feeling sort of the same way. I don't know if this place is forever neutral in my book, or what, but it's kind of got the mas o menos - Switzerland review from my tastebuds. I do dig the open rooftop, but as far as food and drinks here, I've never left with much of a memorable impression.
I went here with a couple friends when I was on a mission to have roof deck cocktails. The roof deck was great: spacious, comfortable and charming. It's a great alternative to the loud Harvard Sqaure pubs. I didn't eat, although one friend I was with did and liked the food. (Although, I remember going to brunch here a few years ago and liking the food.)
The service was phenomenal! I told the server that I liked Jameson and ginger flavored drinks, which she delivered to the "mixologist" who made a delicious beverage (that I ended up having a few of!) She was super friendly and accommodating.
We were there around 9:30pm on a Thursday and it wasn't too crowded. I would definitely return for the roof deck and for the creative cocktails!
This restaurant has the rare addition of an outdoor roof dinner-area! The place is not crowded and the outdoors seating allows for a more quiet and relaxing meal. (Some of the outdoor tables are covered by umbrellas and roofs so you can stay even if it starts to drizzle).
Although the restaurant does not have a gluten-free menu, I was able to ask the waiter for options and the chef quickly modified the dish I want to include a wheat-free sauce! It tasted great and everyone was really nice about the "inconvenience". In fact, the chef said that he was curious whether this new "simpler" sauce was actually taste better than the original.
The waiting staff overall is very attentive and nice. We saw a nearby table drop a drink on the floor and break the glass, but the staff cleaned it up quickly and with a smile.
It's a relaxing, fun dinner (and bar) place! Great for dates or nights out with friends. Can't wait to go back!
Not the cheapest place in Harvard Square to get lunch, but one of the best and a decent value for the price. Also good for dinner/after-work drinks/late night on the weekends.
They have a great selection of local and imported beers (about 10) on tap - I had Leffe Blonde on my most recent visit.
The roof deck is a dream on a warm afternoon or evening. Indoors, open windows lend a European pub feel.
For lunch, the daily special of a half sandwich, cup of soup, and salad for $9 is a steal.
Daedalus is halfway between a gastropub and a regular ol' pub. A good alternative to Grafton Street.
We were here for dinner last Friday and we had very good, quick service. Love the pita and hummus to start. We ordered mussels to share, which were huge and amazing.
I had the Daedalus burger for dinner which had carmelized onions and bleu cheese on top. I don't eat a lot of burgers so this was a real treat for me and it was very tasty (and juicy and messy which are both good things).
We sat inside because we didn't want to wait 45 minutes for a roofdeck table; we sat upstairs which was pleasant. It would be nice if they had more variety on their menu... but overall it was a great meal.
As someone who dines out frequently, I am well aware of the average cost of meals around Cambridge.
On 4/27/12 my boyfriend and I went to Daedalus for lunch - a place we have frequented in the past. I ordered the "special salad", already overpriced in my opinion at $14.95. I asked the waitress whether I could add chicken and avocado to the salad and was told that it was not a problem. I was given NO indication of additional cost for this request. I frequently customize meals and generally don't mind being informed of some additional cost, but in this case, the shocking addition of $7, to an already pricey salad seemed unreasonable - especially since I was not informed of this.
A quick lunch which included one soda, an artichoke hearts appetizer, a salad and sandwich, added up to a steep $61! This appears to be a clear case of price gouging.
I requested to speak to the manager and explained my disappointment at this overpriced meal and the lack of communication by the waitress regarding the extra charge totaling an already pricey "lunch special" SALAD to $22! Laurence (the manager and part owner) was downright rude, disrespectful and dismissive of my concerns. He made no attempt to rectify the situation.
I am not only disgusted by the price of lunch at this establishment, but even more so the demeaning attitude of the manager and lack of customer service.
Would I recommend dining at this excuse for a restaurant. I think this review speaks for itself.
Brunch after visiting Harvard Yard.
A friend of mine found this place and put it on my itinerary for where to eat once I reached Harvard. I was surprisingly happy with this cute little restaurant. I got the "not your average eggs Benedict" which consisted swapped out the ham for smoked salmon and threw in some avocados. It was super tasty. The peach Bellini was good too, but nothing too spectacular.
I had just about given up on the Harvard Square bar scene when a friend and I stumbled upon this place late last summer. We were pleasantly surprised by the beer selection -- while they only have ~10-12 beers on tap at a given time, they're always an interesting and quality collection. I highly recommend the Drifter IPA by Widmer Brothers Brewing. If you like IPAs, you won't be disappointed.
Despite being quite crowded on a Friday night, we managed to find a place to sit outside at one of the wooden tables and could actually hear each other talk. On another occasion, I sat downstairs at the bar with a friend for several hours, where it is significantly less crowded but the "scene" may not be as busy. And on yet another occasion, I came with a group of ~8 and managed to snag a booth upstairs, but I will warn everyone that there aren't many booths available on a weekend night.
Now when I have a friend in town who appreciates good beer, instead of reluctantly going to John Harvard's or Charley's Beer Garden, I'll happily take them to Daedalus and pass several hours there. What an excellent way to spend an evening!
Most places in Harvard Square are blah... but this one is actually pretty decent. Â We went here on a Sunday night. Â Surprisingly, the place was full and the wait was about 20 minutes. Â We waited at the bar and tried their coconut mai tais.. it was okay..
This place has a lot of salads.. so if you're looking for that.. it would be a great spot. Â
We tried the calamari which was pretty good. Â Tender pieces deep fried. Â I liked the sauce.. it's not a typical red sauce but a creamier one. Â Good though...
Also tried the scallops dish. Â I was so full at this point.. I had gone to lamb jam earlier that day.. I could only made to eat 1/4 of the dish. Â The scallops were seared well. Â I didn't like the cream sauce it sat on.. the risotto was okay.. not really creamy.. more like a rice with corn and veggies in it.
Waitress was a little unexcited to be there... not sure if she just had a rough weekend. Â I'd still go again..
It was our first time to Daedalus, and we were just looking to grab a drink while waiting for our reservation at another restaurant. Â The downstairs bar was full, so we trekked upstairs, and I'm glad we did! Â It's much bigger upstairs, but not too big that it actually still feels like a "neighborhood" type bar. Â We had a great bartender, Jay, who happened to be from the Pacific NW just like us, so we naturally bonded pretty quickly.
We ended up staying there for dinner and had a nice time. Â The food was good (and I'm a foodie saying that), but nothing out of this world. Â
We noticed what looked like a pretty cool deck off the upstairs that would be fun for the summer. Â We're looking forward to checking the deck out as soon as it gets nice!
A few days later, we came back as we were entertaining out of town guests. Our bartender buddy, Jay, wasn't working, but another very friendly bartender upstairs helped us. Â It was refreshing to have a smile with service at Daedalus as that has been severely lacking at other Boston restaurants and bars. (fail, Boston, fail)
We're looking foward to trying Trata next door as we heard it's owned by the same people. Â Will go check the reviews for there now:-)
If it weren't for the rooftop deck, I think I would hate this place.
Some fellow yelpers and I decided on Daedalus for dinner - it's unfortunate they don't take reservations for their outdoor tables but luckily our timing scored one.
Just a word of caution (Trish F) - if you drop something off the table like a phone or purse, there is no need to SCREAM as it bounces through the railings. There's a ledge to catch stuff before it crashes to the sidewalk.
The food here is mediocre at best. Better than Applebee's but pretty much up there with a Ninety-Nine Restaurant.
Our server was wicked slow. She would stop by the table once a decade to deliver items or maybe check on us. Maybe. I probably could have read Tolstoy's "War and Peace" in the amount of time it took to pay our bill...did her legs fall off?
So yeah...if you somehow get lucky with a table on their roof deck, awesome. If you are stuck inside - then you're probably wasting your time and money.
I can mostly only give this place positive stars because it is what it is...a long-time Harvard Square eatery in a cool building with a  pretty sweet upstairs-roof-deck-open-air thing going on. You can't deny how refreshing it is to sit in the sunshine on a lazy Sunday afternoon and eat your brunch. You'll notice how I didn't say "enjoy" your brunch. You might eat it, and it might fill you up, but enjoyment may be a stretch. The brunch food here is below average and leads me to wonder how they it competes with other brunch places.
Additionally, the service is very very slow. Slow in a way that seems to fuel my impatience, not slow in a way that breeds great conversation and relaxation. I am tempted, however, to come back and try dinner and perhaps snag a seat on the patio, but brunch is a no-go here.
I've a friend who finds a restaurant, eats it to death and moves on. She's a boll weevil. Or Galactus.
These days, it's Daedalus. She asked if I wanted to grab dinner. I said yes. We went to Daedalus. Because she needs to destroy it.
The dining space on the first floor is cluttered. We sat at a rickety two top, my chair sandwiched between the table and a buttress. Can't. Breathe.
I had the Guinness beef stew with a Guinness chaser. Warm, hearty and satisfying. Not sure it's a $15 entree though.
The server was indifferent and efficient. My friend's flank steak came out undercooked. When notified, the server replied "Oh yeah?" and brought it back to the kitchen. I think I burst in to flames at one point; she brought me a glass of water and set it down with a shrug.
So yeah, this experience is about as memorable as that one thing that one time.
This review is for the daytime side of Daedalus. I visited to meet an a friend  for a midday meal and told the host so. He was snappy and jerked his head in the direction of the upstairs. Not a good first impression. I wandered up to find a sunlit space with black booths and red roses in espresso cups, think old piano bar style but strange and incongruous with the rest of the place. A huge open outdoor patio was being worked on so I knew for certain I would return even though I was slightly uncomfortable about being the youngest patron. However, my server was especially nice, negating the brusqueness of the others.
The menu had a great array of foods, not your typical bar menu and a list of enticing specials. We opted for the calamari, great sauce and overall quite tasty and both ended up ordering pasta dishes. Mine was a light cream sauce with sun-dried tomatoes, asparagus and chicken and sounded fantastic but the execution was disappointing. It was so oily that I had to prop my dish up with my knife to drain the oil to one side, pretty unappetizing in itself. I didn't even want dessert. My companion decided on simple vanilla ice cream though which was just awesome. I'll give it another shot when it warms and the patio is available as the menu looks promising.
