Great bar in Hayward, one of my favorite places to chill out and get a drink.
The bartending staff is awesome, very friendly and helpful. Â The bar does not have a good wine selection --- but it is a dive bar so that is to be expected. Â Drinks are reasonably prices and they don't skimp on the alcohol!
The asian girl with the tattoos behind the counter was a sweetheart. We came in with the goal of getting drunk and she was more than accommodating. The drinks from the menu were amazing and same goes for whatever it is we ordered. Kudos chick! :D
The floorplan of the place is a little sketch. Too many steps and obstacles for drunk people. HA :P, but the Ren and Stimpy playing on the TV made up for that. There's a little cove-ish sitting area for more privacy, pool tables, and a nice outdoor space in the back. I'm pretty sure we utilized all of the spaces.
New favorite bar in Hayward. Boom! :)
And for my 100th review, The Dirty Bird Lounge. Haha. My classmates and I always pass by this place when driving down Mission and always wanted to give it a try. Well we finally did after one of our last class of the quarter! Woot woot.
Now who wouldn't want to come to a place called The Dirty Bird. Catchy and enticing name. It's real chill bar. Two pool tables, a movie playing in the background (Win for playing Dark Knight!), bar seats, and an outside patio for you to smoke. The bartender was really friendly and she always double checked our drinks to make sure she got the right order. (: Thank you!!
Alright I went around 7:30/8 on a Tuesday night. It was pretty dead, but it started picking up around 9. Mixed crowds of young and old. You won't feel like you're out of place! Music wasn't blasting like it is at most bars I go to. So I was able to listen and attend to my friend's conversation. So a great place to catch up!
I have to say their bathroom was amazingly clean. I was quite taken back actually. Seriously it's remodeled so nicely. Haha. You may have to wait because it's only one stall for you ladies~
Drinks range in prices. 4~ to about 11/12~ dollars for specialty drinks. (: I only got beer so I'll be coming back to try some of their specialty drinks. Seriously they got some catchy names there.
Went here last night with my gf, and wow! Whammy! Â - I blame autocorrect.
Mike was tending the bar, and it looked like a few people walked in just as we did, so it got a bit busy really quick and he was alone, but he handled it very well. Â We loved his sarcastic sense of humor as he chastised a regular.
Bartender: My babe ordered an out-of-the-box drink, and Mike took a crack at making it. Â It didn't come out too well the first time, so he tossed it and made another using different techniques. Â The second one came out amazing! You can tell he knows what he's doing, and we were impressed that he took the extra time to get her drink perfect. Â
Ambiance: Dimly lit, very personal and intimate. Â My honey and I sat in the dark on a couch, and had one of our patented make out sessions for pretty much the entire visit! Â The place was filled with nice people, nothing obnoxious. Â The music was good, and played as a moderately low volume. Â The bathrooms are clean. Â
This place is sexy..so if you come in here with someone of the opposite sex, be prepared to get your pants tight. ;)
I haven't once had a bad time at the Bird.
I always run into someone I know, and the bartenders are so friendly and good at what they do (the clientele are almost always friendly too). I've had  two successful birthday parties here, one of them with about 50 friends and complete with pizza and cake we brought in.
There are cool seating areas where people can congregate scattered throughout the bar, making it feel homey yet spacious. Unfortunately, they had to reduce the huge, colorful patio that they had built out back due to permit issues, but there is still some seating in a smaller enclosed area. Back inside, there is sweet art on the walls which makes you feel like you're in a tattoo parlor, an internet jukebox, two pool tables, and peacock feathers adorning the wall that provide a constant photo opp. They have great drinks with names like The Baby Maker and Effin Like Bunnies. The owners take pride and care in their bar, and it shows.
Like someone else said, I've thought about taking a wrench to that women's bathroom sink. It's a beaut.
So check out The Dirty Bird and find another reason why Hayward does NOT, in fact, suck. It's a lonelier part of Hayward that it's in, for sure, but just hop on Mission afterward and you're downtown in no time.
it's okay..it's a mix crowd young and old..but mostly local college students and local wankstas. A lot of wanksta hugging the pool table and not giving u a chance to at least play one game. one time they had free BBQ wings for everyone and everybody rush on that..I too rush on it..the wings were hella good. they have a patio on the back and thats were they cook the BBQ wings. It's a cool little spot for a group or solo...except wankstas hugging the pool tables thats why i gave it a 3..if it weren't for that i would give it 4 or 4.5..i wont gave it a 5 cuz no one is perfect.
Review Source:This place is ok and only that. I like that they have free pool until 7pm everyday but they don't have a happy hour and SOME of the waitresses are rude. I will find my self here 2 times a month (more-or-less) just to hang out so they must be doing something right...The art work is cool and the overall ambience for a hayward spot is above average. This spot is worth checking out personally; all my friends have mixed feeling about this place too.
Review Source:Don't get discouraged when you drive by. Its in a dark area & it looks like a plain ol' bar from the outside, but when you go inside, its actually really nice for a small little lounge/bar. They have lounge chairs, a lovely display of a peacocks' feathers that changes colors in the light. They have a cute back patio with a lemon tree! Also, the bartenders are really nice. Â They also accept credit & debit cards! They also have a music player to pick songs you want to listen to. The bathroom is in a convenient location too. Not to mention, they have pool tables too. The drinks I got though was too expensive for this local place. Â I'm used to local bars charging drinks from $5-7. I could understand if this place was in a busy area, but its not. Â So I got charged $10 for each drink. Booo on that part. I will still consider coming back to this place though.
Review Source:Dive bar fun! Red dimmed lights...pool table...jukebox....people from all walks of life. Equates to a memorable first time visit.
Stiff cheap drinks. I had three Jameson's and was aiming for more and probably had more don't really remember:) What I remember was the fun we had. The ability to be able to chat in this bar and hear what your friends are saying was the surprise of the night. Love that!
Scattered couches, small counters with bar stools and a couple of love seats are the choices to congregate.
The crowds are cool. The bouncer pretty chill. Bartender's a-okay! Â Our new friend from Oregon was a hit that night. Drunk and chatty and so much fun to listen to! :)
A first time fan!
Had to write a more recent review. This is my home bar. Always love coming here. Kidan my girl always takes care of me while I'm there I always get a kamikaze with a splash of x rated. If you cant make a simple drink taste good. You can't make drinks. Aaron on Monday is an awesome mixologist, made me an awesome grapefruit something for my birthday, it was exactly up my alley. Crowd is diverse. Â The regulars here are always friendly, and you'll always have someone to chat with. I wish they had food. But it's ok you can bring your own or there are a couple of places that will actually deliver food there. Don't judge it from the outside.
Downfalls. I wish they would fix the parking lot, and have more lighting. When it rains that cover outside doesn't really cover. And the new fruit trees outback, attract little fruit flies, not so appealing when you're eating or hanging out outside.
Dive bar exterior, somewhat hip and friendlier interior. Art on the walls, some sofas to sit on and a little patio out the back.
Their draught beer selection is decent, not just the big watery ones. Scotch and bourbon selections are not wide but the bartenders make up for it with a heavy pour.
Couple of pool tables and a jukebox. No food.
Crowd seems varied, some old dudes at the bar, 30 yearolds here and there, some younger east bay college people too. Doesn't really get jumping til well after 8.
Yes there was a shooting but I never felt uncomfortable going there in the months leading up to it. Just bad luck and and angry psycho that's now dead.
Don't let the cruddy south hayward surroundings put you off, dirty bird is a diamond in the rough.
Never been to Hayward... Didn't think I would ever have a reason to be there. But damn-- I've been missing out! The Dirty Bird is just as cool, if not cooler than any stuffy lounge I've been to in the city-- and their drinks are just the same but half the price! It's one of the classiest "dive bars" I've ever visited. I absolutely love the creative décor all along the walls made with peacock feathers, artwork, posters and neon lights. I love the fact that there are several types of seating options: booths, stools, and lounge chairs...making the bar seem really cozy and super spacious.
According to the Duke, it doesn't get crackin there til around 10pm or 11pm on a Saturday night, but luckily we were the life of the party, so this didn't make a difference to us. We had the place almost completely to ourselves around 8pm, with juke box control and pool tables at our dispose.
The only staff member I came encounter with was Summer, the bartender, with the mostest. She was super sweet and put up with my pain in the ass, drink requests just fine, with a huge smile across her face. She made the drinks perfectly-- not too strong, not too light, just right.
I love this place. Bestest Dive Bar in the area! :-) Hoping to become the new Duchess of the Dirty in the coming year!
Not sure why you might make your way to Hayward or furthermore to that dark stretch of Mission Blvd where The Dirty Bird Lounge neon sign beckons to you like a mirage in the desert, but should this situation come to pass stop in for a drink - trust me it's not sand.
From the outside, The Dirty Bird Lounge looks like a scene from "Roadhouse"; and you half expect someone to be getting thrown out the window as you are walking in, but it's much tamer than all that. Â With a surprisingly impressive menu of special concoctions and a fairly diverse beer menu, you can hardly go wrong.
The one drawback of this spot (besides the fact that it's in the middle of nowhere) is the music. Â As long as the bartenders are managing the music, the vibe remains tight. Â Their musical selections are pretty dope. Â But it's when the patrons decide to cram their dollars into the jukebox where things can start to go awry. Â
My recommendation is to hit The Dirty Bird on an off night just to chill and have some drinks, enjoy the odd collection of patrons and share some jokes with the bartenders who are super friendly.
Reading through the previous reviews will give you a good indication of what to expect from the Dirty Bird: deceptively shoddy exterior, nicely decorated inside, friendly bartenders, stiff drinks, huge warm back patio, chill crowd.
So I would just like to add a personal note that as a long-time dive bar aficionado recently transplanted from Oakland (dive bar central) to San Leandro, I was dismayed because the several dive bars I'd experienced in the 'Dro, the Haystack and CV were uniformly shitty and populated by the exact sort of people I make it a point to avoid in the real world.
I don't know who turned me on to the Dirty Bird, but I decided to give it a try on a Friday evening, and was pretty blown away when I walked in and saw that the place actually looked well kept and modern. The bartender at the time, Sandra, was immediately super friendly to my buddy and I, and I instantly felt I had found a new home away from home, especially when I saw that lovely back patio.
Since then I've made a point of checking in usually once a week, and have gotten to know all the other bartenders who are all really cool people! I tend to come Fridays or Saturdays when Dave or Jules are working, and having friendly, accommodating bartenders like those two really makes the Bird special.
Also the drink selection is superb: Racer and Arrogant Bastard on tap, great selection of scotch including MacAllan and Lagavulin, even top shelf Louis XIV type bottles if you're in the mood for a $150 pour.
Anyway, I don't want to say too much for fear everyone will find out about this place and it will be mobbed all the time, but the DBL really rules!
Enjoyed the lounge feeling, reasonably priced drinks, friendly crowd, and quick bartenders. I'm sure everyone has heard "Don't judge a book by it's cover;" and this is a prime example. It looks seedy, not in a great part of town, has a "Bike Bar" past, yet is none of those things.
Definitely will return when I am in the area.
EFFIN LIKE BUNNIES!!!
That's what you've gotta get if you like cocktails that are delicious but still decently strong. Â I saw it posted on the wall outside while waiting for my friend to get patted down. HA!
My girlfriend discovered this place when she moved into the area (more like 2 blocks away) and invited us to meet her there. Â It looks like your typical dive bar from the outside, but you get inside and realize its a huge place, pretty clean with lots of seating.
They've got a pool table, arcade games and a juke box if you're into that. Â My friend told me she came here 2+ years ago and the same bartenders are still working till this day. Â That tells you a lot about the staff and the quality they bring.
Try the cocktail, you won't regret it!
Well oh right... i finally got the courage to step into the world famous, pride of Hayward, Dirty Bird Lounge-- after a few drinks of course. Â I don't think i have the stones to go in sober. Â This is saying a lot because a few days prior, someone (was it more than 1?) person was shot and killed. Â Despite feeling like i was going to be murdered, the Dirty Bird is decent, somewhat nice inside. Â Maybe it was thug's night off, Hipster's drink free night, or the human proclivity towards wanting to stay alive, and thus away from Dirty Bird.... but this is a mellow, not overly packed scene i may frequent once my Teflon arrives from Amazon.
Review Source:"As seen on Yelp!" the sign outside The Dirty Bird proudly exclaims.
Really? This seedy building in South Hayward?
Curiosity got the best of me, meaning I made the trek through its gravel parking lot to check it out. It's your typical dive bar, albeit one with nicer lighting and a strong scent of incense burning. It's no doubt one of the better bars in Hayward, but there are better places to spend your evening.
Let me be clear-- come Monday nights, the rating goes up to 5 stars! (and sometimes Tuesdays-- when Mike is tending bar. lol)
Firstly, I want to just GUSH about Aaron. Never mind the fact that this is a bar in Hayward-- on MISSION BLVD. I never walked in expecting amazing cocktails and such great service. And I certainly never imagined walking out deciding to be a regular! But Aaron (and his drinks) are so difficult to stay away from! He is absolutely irrefutably fantastic. And the drinks he makes are out of this world. DBL doesn't have every ingredient available on the bartending market, but he makes do with whatever they have. He's my bartender crush forrealz. *__*
(You know, I've always had to think twice about writing a review for DBL... I never wanted to share this Monday night treasure out loud. lol But Aaron deserves the praise and I think just about every other good review on here is for Mondays anyway. haha)
I've gone to DBL every other day of the week as well. Tuesdays are great, because I'll go and if the Asian bartender is there, he will pick on me for being... well, picky. lol Wednesdays are karaoke nights. Thursdays aren't half bad. But come Friday and Saturday, I prefer going elsewhere. The place isn't big enough to cater to large groups of drunks... even though there's an outside patio area for smokers, I just can't enjoy my weekends at DBL... x:
There are two $1 pool tables you can play on, and they aren't half bad.
There was a shooting here a few nights ago. It's nice the bar is so close, but it looks so seedy. They should remodel the bar...
The few times I went to this bar, the guys stopped whatever they were doing to talk to me. Some dudes stopped me in the parking lot to holla, OMG OMG...... either it;s boring here or I'm cute. I rarely drink alcohol...
Must be the half Persian genes.. thank u daddy!
My gf was slumbering over at my place and was itching to go out. Â But what the hell is there to do in Hayward on a late Tuesday night? Â I was not about to drive all the way to San Fran or Oakland to get a drink to hang out. Â So, I remembered my all important invite to "Bling Your Nails" 2 year anniversary in biz par-tay. Â So, me and my gf skanked it up a bit (but not too much) and drove out to this bar. Â
When we arrived, we were scared as hell from the exterior design. Â We contemplated for a second to go in or not. Â But we put up a brave face and marched right in! Â So, happy that we made it through the front entrance because we were pleasantly surprised that the interior decor was not as scary as outside. Â There was a jukebox for music, pool tables, a backyard for outdoorsy types, and most importantly, a clean bar with a super nice bartender. Â
We ordered up a couple of Cosmo's and sipped it in the corner booth. Â It was extremely relaxing and the atmosphere was upbeat. Â And we both enjoyed our night out of the house...
This spot is right around the corner from my apartment. At first I was extremely hesitant to go here. I assumed it was like a biker bar or something. Went inside, they had some pretty cool conscious music playing. I was pleasantly surprised.
I'm easy to please with the drinks so no complaints there. They have a nice large patio in the back which is awesome, but only until my nose starts burning from cigarette smokers. Great happy hour spot as well!!
I'm pretty sure I'm a fan because who doesn't like being groped outside with no one to see but your stiff drink and the heat lamps.
To add to the appeal: I'm always a sucker for patios, good looking bartenders that question my license, and blaring music forcing me to make out with ppl.
Just keep my sour in my whiskey sour to a minimum, please.
Also, can we please bring back beer pong?
I've only been here about 3 times, but it seems like I'm already a regular. This place is easy to get used to. Very chill & diverse crown, sleek outdoor patio with awesome lighting, upbeat music, fair prices, and great drinks & beers. The service can be better - but when it's packed, you can't expect much. I'd have to say that my favorite feature of this lounge is that they serve Stone's Arrogant Bastard on tap, which is one of my all-time favorites that I purchase by the case and drink nearly everyday, ha.
Agreeing with the fair amount of the other reviews: don't judge a book by its cover. Yes, it looks like a dive from the outside, but what neighborhood bar doesn't? You won't know what it's like until you actually go in and experience it. The Dirty Bird was definitely better than I had expected.
Go ahead, give it a shot.
Boyfriend, two of my closest friends and I made our way out to what felt like the middle of no where in order to get to this place. Granted, the outside makes the Dirty Bird look like the scariest freaking bar ever. Like you would be shot as soon as you stepped out of your car. But it's such a huge contrast to the inside.
Inside, it's a hipster-y kind of dive-y bar. There's a small bar along the wall as well as two pool tables and a DJ set-up. The decor is what makes it hipster-y -- everything else about the place screams "dive bar". The woman's bathroom is also absolutely gorgeous (but then again, it was only the beginning of the night; who knows what it looks like after people have really started to drink?).
Maybe it was because I got there at like 7PM and only stayed for about a couple of hours, but the entire place was pretty dead and I wasn't impressed. Plus it was Wednesday night -- karaoke night! Where were the drunk people belting out 80s power ballads? I was disappointed.
What happens at the DBL stays at the DBL apparently....
I met up with some friends and their friends were off the hook!!
Super cool place to just relax and chill after a long day at work... the chips are a great touch...
I appreciate a place where they let folks get sloppy but not too sloppy...
I had a good number of laughs (as usual) Â
The lounge area outside is awesome
Oh boy! Â Come here on MONDAYS!! Â The bartender on Monday nights is this... cocktail creating GENIUS! Â Seriously... it's ridiculous. Â I think his name is Aaron. But he concocts all this crazy stuff at home and brings it to the bar and makes the most delicious drinks. Â I got to try his eggnog around the holidays. WOW. Â And I went around Valentine's Day and he had this whole floral theme and made me drinks that tasted like lavender and oranges. Â He puts in eggs in everything... it's crazy. Â And I just completely trust him to make whatever he'd like. Â I've never had the same cocktail twice but everything I've had has been so good. Â
Other than the Monday night bartender being awesome... I'm a big fan of the DBL. Â Pool tables, clean bathrooms, comfy seating, big patio out back. Â It's surprising how cool this place actually is because it looks extra sketch from the parking lot.
DIrty Bird Lounge is a drinking establishment in a decrepit parking lot with dim lighting. the lot  sits in a desolate strip of mssion blvd decimated from failed car lots and commercial strip malls.
remembered salem hayak in "dusk to dawn" in a desolate bar. once i enterd Dirtry Bird, i knew this wouldn't be deja vu. interior totally cosmolitan.
-subdue, mysterious lighting,
-well manicured bar.
-many different rooms
-drawings of  tatttoed geishas and other art works on the wall
-outside patio
-pool tables.
flatscreen: steinfein.
happy hours(sun-sat, 2-7, $5)
-ketel one vodka
-seagrams gin
- Â rum
-tequilla
- Â Â brandy
*pours of ketel one and seagrams were strong
on draught:
-many micros available
-dirty is an optical  illusion in the desert of hayward
-heartell drinks pricey (7) in the buzy evenings. 4 stars for the happy hour
-upscale clientele during HH. locals pay the regular prices in the evening.
-heartell gets busy in the evenings, few bartenders.
Eh,
It's The Dirty Bird Lounge! What else is there more to say?
A small bar located in south Hayward right off Industrial blvd. seems like one of the sketchiest bars in America if you've never been inside and only looking at it from the outside.
As a local resident of the Hayward area, this has arguably one of the most hyped bars in the city. Why do you ask? Because it attracts local residents, provides stellar entertainment, and offers a wide range of different spirits and brews.
Flor De Cana costs $10 for a shot. Geez Louise.
The negatives:
- Pricey. $7 for a cocktail? Get out of here with that. I know the business has expenses and taxes, but its definitely not customer friendly when it comes to price ranges.
- Understaffed. I've seen this place get packed on the weekends with only 1 or 2 bartenders on hand. Owners should hire a barback or provide assistance behind the bar! Where's the standards here?
Overall, it's definitely difficult to get a drink here because of the popularity of this establishment, but at times it can be fun if the mood is right. I've seen people I went to high school with here and it makes it even more enjoyable to come there. It's a bar where you know that you'll see some of your old friends there.
Check it out if you have a night to kill.
Came here for mixologist mondays and it was really fun. very chill place. from the outside it really doesn't look like much but its somewhat cozy and nice as far as dive bars go. mixology monday is my favorite day to go because you tell the bartender your poison and he/she will concoct a drink from that! With that you would think they would be charging up the bunghole but to be honest this place prices drinks pretty cheap! they also have different themes on other days as well but i have yet to experience them.
FUN TIP: you can bring some food to cook on their grill in the back for a party or what not! get your BBQ on while you sip on your drinks! fun place to go to in the east bay!!
This is my go to bar in Hayward. The drinks are strong and the people are hip. Mind you the setting might not be for everyone, but almost everyone I've taken there ends up coming back and enjoy it :)
They have pool, a cute outside area (which is nice during summer) and loud music.
Also do not be put off by the outside looks, sure it can look like a dive bar from the outside...but once you go inside it's a whole other story.
I used to have a lot of mixed feelings toward the dirty bird, but now it's become one of my regular spots. The crowd (for the most part) has gotten a lot better. However, it is still comparable to a high school reunion 60% of the time. But that's what anyone's going to get when going to a bar in the same town they went to high school in, ha.
In short, prices are fair, drinks are strong and the bartenders are nice. I've even been seeing more cute people there lately. I really can't hate on The Bird.
My friends and I love DBL.
On Wednesdays, they have Karaoke Night! :D
I still have yet to try their happy hour.
The outside looks "janky" but inside it's not that bad.
A lot of lounging around (: though it may be a little too dim inside.
When you go on Karaoke Nights, fair warning, it's really LOUD.
Drinks are not that expensive.
But usually the crowd there it's male dominated.
We usually go on Wednesdays since it's more lively,
And I love to sing.
There are pool tables to kill some time.
But getting there around 10 or 11 ish, the crowd isn't really bumping.
So if you want to go enjoy a drink or two with a friend,
And catch up or have a conversation, best time to go around then.
Mother does not know that I frequented the dirty bird. Mother says that dive bars call upon the devil for liquor but I think thats ridiculous, do you think thats ridiculous? I think that's ridiculous.
Mother does not know I kissed a girl at the Dirty Bird, it would not be good for mothers heart. The last time I kissed a girl and mother found out, I had to drive mother to the emergency room. The doctor said you cannot die from a broken heart but I think mother was very ill.
The prices for beer here are very reasonable, which is nice because mother doesn't have to know that I steal coins from the laundry jar.
Mother would also disapprove of the friendly bartenders here that talk to you and make you feel at ease. This is good because I need to be comforted when I spend long periods away from my mother.
Finally they have a pool table and a juke box. Mother says Rihanna is a whore and a floozy but I paid money for her songs, but mother thinks she is a whore.
Ahhh, you dirty bird! Â You got me! Â
I was doing this whole 30 day detox therapy thing and *almost* made it. Â You know; Â no red meat, no alcohol (gulp), no fun - when all of the sudden I saw the DBL marquis!
It called to me in lopsided letters something like "voted best in hayward on yelp.com".
I got so excited when I read it that my husband got pissed cuz he thought something was wrong. Â
I insisted we turn around and go back!
The place was empty upon arrival...yay, more attention from the bartender, Sahar, for me!
It's dimly lit inside and has some couches you can chill on if the bar stools are not your thing...I think anytime a drinkery has the word lounge in it you have to assume there will be a cushioned couch, loveset, sofa or hell even an ottoman inside.
Anyhow...I blew it on day 22 Â of my detox here, and I can blame (or thank depending on how you look at it) Sahar for the very good drinks, the juke box for the Metallica, the tattooed dudes that showed up on their rice rockets and my husband for not reminding me that i have no will power.
And, one other thing...if I had a pipe wrench, a bigger purse and one more long island - that hella beautiful sink in the womens bathroom would have gone home with me!
The DBL was insane! I have to admit that I wasn't expecting too much from the looks of the place from the outside, but it was pretty cracking on the inside! You know how the saying goes!
I was invited to come out with my Yelp homie Tisha K. and I couldn't say no to kick it with my buddy! Â I met a bunch of great people as well! Everyone just wanted to have a great time and there weren't any trouble makers which made the night very enjoyable!
I will be back to imbibe at this great watering hole!
