This was a neat place. Â My husband and I were visiting my parents in Winston-Salem and turned to District Rooftop Bar and Grill. Â We sat inside, because in November it's a little chilly.
The food was good...nothing absolutely amazing, but spot on for what we needed at the time. Â We got the crap artichoke dip (so much for the diet) and it was delicious...
Unfortunately because it was so long ago and we only went for lunch, my brain doesnt remember what we ate. I know it was good and I know I want to come back in the summer and sit on the rooftop and drink some cocktails...I'll update my review then.
The District Roof Top Bar is just that. Â A roof top bar. Â Each time I have been for dinner or lunch it was more miss than hit and I am not into that style of restaurant. Â I am not a fan of the artificial butter or oil they use on the buns of a sandwich. Â It taste like Wendy's. Â Uggh
They have food and they usually have people there eating, however, if it were me, I would stick to the HUGE rooftop patio/bar. Â
The rooftop has great views of the city and a good crowd of folks to mix/mingle with.
If you are in the area stop in for a drink and hopefully you wont be disappointed.
Enjoyed the Chipotle Chicken Nachos, Turkey Slider, and Camel City Dip. Nice views of downtown Winston-Salem and great service.

Did not experience the high ratings as others claim. Service was VERY slooow. I had the recommended salmon that was overcooked. Wife had the Moravian chicken pie that was very bland. The crust was specifically mentioned on the menu as being flaky. Not so this time! Large portions of the crust (top and bottom) could be used to play a drum solo on the plate. It may be a nice place to enjoy a drink on the rooftop bar but I would eat prior to arriving.
Review Source:I've been here a couple of times. Twice for dinner and once for lunch. Dinner was fine, nothing great though. Lunch was a disappointment. I thought you couldn't go wrong with a burger, oh how I was mistaken.
The "bun" was some strange pretzel thing covered in oil/butter. It was pretty bad. I opened it up and found some fried discs on the burger. What's this? Oh, fried pickles? seriously? Yeah, can I just get some normal pickles please. Waiter returned to advise they didn't have any "normal" ones. A kitchen without pickles? So are these fried ones just microwaved frozen pickles?
Anyway, I put the bun and fried discs aside and was left with a pretty unseasoned piece of meat.
All in all, I can't say I think I'll be returning. Just not worth it. If you want a burger at a sit down place, try Village Tavern. Really nice there. I should have gone there in the first place....
My wife and I enjoyed a great meal last night at the District. Â We ate outside which was a very pleasant experience. Â Service and food were excellent. Â My wife had the blackened grouper and I had a blackened strip steak. Â The grouper was nicely seasoned and very tasty but texture was a little less firm than normal. Â The steak was tremendous with just enough sauce on plate to dip in and spice up even more. Â The meat was very tender. Â Will definitely be back-have to try the chicken and waffles.
Review Source:For an entire "night-out" experience conveniently packaged in one building, this is it.
The food, which as always, is key, has been very consistent. Â Nothing is mindblowingly inventive (although their take on Moravian Chicken Pie is pretty close), but that's not what we expected, either. Â Everything IS executed perfectly.
We first visited on the last Tuesday of The Big Eat - Pesto Salmon in Buerre Blanc was the special. Â Two of our party ordered the Salmon, Jason had Chicken and Waffles, and Kevin had the Sesame Ahi Tuna. Â We ordered the Chipotle Chicken Nachos as an app. Â The Nachos were served in a heaping, generous pile on a cast iron platter, and were smothered with toppings. Â The chicken looked genuinely "pulled", and tasted like it had come right out of a proper pit. Â The toppings were all super-fresh, and the cheese was actual CHEESE, not a thick goopy cheese sauce. Â The serving was more than enough for four, and when we ran out of chips and had filling left, the waitress propmtly offered more chips. Â She DID sort of ... kind of ... spill a bit of beer in Kevin's lap when she came back, but it resulted in a free beer, and the remainer of the half-spilled beer, so who's complaining?
Entrees were spot-on. Â The Salmon was cooked to perfection - just a touch of crisp on the outside; tender and flaky throughout. Â Perfect Buerre Blanc, same for the house-made pesto. Â Squash Casserole and Asparagus (the proper, small, skinny, tender asparagus) were equally tasty. Â Kevin's Tuna was perfectly cooked - impressive, given the immense size of the cut of fish. Â The sides (rice and creamed spinach) were tasty. Â Jason's Chicken and Waffles were just as good - the chicken (a full southern-fried breast-and-leg, if we recall), was deeply, golden-crispy and PIPING hot, the waffles were perfect, and the collards served alongside were hands-down sensational.
We returned tonight with a larger group, and sat in the private dining room. Â This is a great opportunity to point out the inspired decor. Â Each dining room (including the large, heated outdoor entry-level patio space) has its own identity, but each is linked by a recurring theme of reclaimed chandeliers, lighting, and accents. Â This works brilliantly with the bare exposed original brick walls. Â SOME of the wall art is a bit chintzy, but given the budget required to build a place like this, some sacrifices are, we guess, unavoidable. Â Tonight, we split the same nachos as last visit, and the Spinach and Bleu Cheese Crab Dip, between the table of 7. Â The Crab Dip was delightful - warm, thick pita chips with a dish of steaming hot, rich, flavorful dip topped with whole chunks of crab, which had obviously JUST been browned in the serving dish. Â
Jason chose the Moravian Chicken Pie - 'really?', we thought, when we first saw the menu. Â Yes, REALLY. Â Try it. Â It ain't your momma's chicken pie by any means. Â Subtle herb flavors and a rich brown gravy elevate it to an art form. Â It's served in a bed of rich, gravied mashed potatoes that would just as quickly shame your mother's. Â Kevin and one other in our party had the special - Fish and Chips - and this was another homerun. Â The fish (mahi) was in a unique beer batter that we can only describe as a hybrid of southern fried chicken batter and tempura - the beer is Sweet Josie, from a Triangle brewery. Fish was proper: JUST crispy outside; meltingly tender, steaky, and just slightly translucent inside. Â The remoulade dipping sauce might as well have been Emeril's own recipe (we actually suspect it is - Kevin's made it before), and the gently spicy malt vinegar was a thoughtful nod to tradition. Â The "chips" (house-made fresh-cut fries) were just as impressive. Â Even the slaw, typically a throwaway side, was great. Â
Two other diners had burgers - solid good-quality burgers with a neat southern twist - fried crinkle-sliced pickles! Â The signature pretzel rolls were a nice touch as well. Â Be warned, though - one of the burgers was ordered with fresh, sliced jalapenos, and these are honest-to-goodness NUCLEAR jalapenos - Kevin agrees and he's ordered and enjoyed dishes "Thai-hot"!
We can't fail to mention the technically PERFECT Creme Brulee. Â This is a rarity - we've only locally sampled it this well-executed here, and at Ryan's. Â Here, a bit of Vanilla Bean powder adds a nice touch.
The upgrade to five stars happens AFTER dinner. Â Discover this for yourself. Â Wander up to the bar, check out the drink specials, enjoy whatever local artist might be performing, or just catch the game. Â When it gets warmer, we look forward to going back to enjoy the rooftop view for longer than ten minutes at a chilly stretch! Â This, truly, is a whole night out, in one spot.
I was a little disappointed in the "rooftop" bar. Â It wasn't very tall, but I guess that is to be expected in Winston-Salem. Â I do love that parking is available and plentiful.
Unfortunately when I went the rooftop was closed because it was too cold.  There was a patio, but no one was willing to brave the chilly weather.  Inside, it was pretty crowded as  a result.
First off, I could not find the front entrance to this place for the life of me. It was so frustrating, especially when it was only 20 degrees out! Upon entry, the restaurant area looks really nice. Definitely a classy restaurant. I was seated in the private dining area though, because I was here with a group. There was also a bar upstairs that looked neat, but I didn't get a chance to check out.
I ordered the pepperoni pizza. It was tasty! The bread was very good, and so was the cheese. Nothing was overwhelming, and it was not too greasy. Very classic pizza, and one I wouldn't mind coming back to enjoy again. My friends got everything from burger to quesadilla to chicken and waffles. No complaints, but I didn't get a chance to ask them about their food.
My pizza did take a long time to come out, but when it did, the guy (not our waiter) who brought it out informed me that my pizza will be taken off the bill since it took so long. I really appreciated that, and I think it shows that this place is thoughtful about their customer's satisfaction. Definitely a rarity in Winston.
The waiter who served our party was not  very enthusiastic. He didn't show much emotion, and I got the feeling that he didn't want to be there. Kind of kills the mood a little bit.
I would love to go back and check this place out when it's warmer. I think it's vast patio and rooftop patio spaces look really fun. Can't wait till the weather gets warmer, and I really hope they'll play music for dancing then! What a great place this is :)
Came here on a Saturday night and the wait was over an hour. But we were asked to wait in the bar (which is way too small for a waiting area!) but got seated at the bar relatively quickly. I had the chicken & waffles which was spectacular, and we shared a great nacho appetizer. My friends enjoyed their meals a lot. I can't wait to go back and sit outside when it is warmer!
Review Source:Let me just say... I was pleasantly surprised by this place. The atmosphere... Exterior/interior was nice and modern, but I wasn't too sure about how the food would be. Â Wow - expectations exceeded!!! Â I had just about the best Chicken and Waffles entree I've ever had... And I've had many Chicken and Waffle dishes! Â Their interpretation of the dish was different, yet relevant. All the flavors meshed together impeccably! Thumbs WAY up... I'll definitely be back!!!
Review Source:We didn't get to eat here because they could not accommodate our large group on short notice (understandable on a Saturday), but I wanted to leave a review here because they were VERY helpful in helping us find a place that could! Â THANK YOU! Next time I'm in Winston, I hope to try the place!
Review Source:Sometimes after a long, tough day in the little gray cube-o-death, you need a drink. Luckily, downtown Winston-Salem is stepping it up in the selection of where said drink can take place.
Let me begin on what their #1 best quality is. Atmosphere is key. Winston-Salem is by no means a big city, but for being as small as it is, it actually has a decent little skyline. This is something that few places aside from BB&T Ballpark seem to really capitalize on. Well...District does just that. It had terrific views. It is so nice to be able to sit outside watching the sun set on the BB&T Building. They are not at a loss for space, either. Aside from the rooftop area, there is also a large deck just outside the building. Absolutely splendid. Don't get sad on the rainy days, though. The interior is equally as nice.
There was a decent range of prices. You could grab a burger for $9; however, the dinner entrees were north of $20 for the most part. I had a black bean burger with mac and cheese. To be honest, it was a bit forgettable. This is by no means to say it was bad, but it wasn't amazing.
Draft beers were $3.00 a pint; however, their selection was a bit limited (Bud Light, Miller Lite, Blue Moon, & Red Oak. There may have been one other, but it has left me.) If you happen to be one of those weirdos who likes bottles, the selection was a bit more extensive, but not much in the way of NC craft brews. The wine selection was a bit better, however. From the looks of things, I'd have a tough time calling this a beer, wine, or cocktail kind of place. For the most part, it would be ideal if you are with a group who wanted different things. They seem to cater to a little bit of everyone.
The service was nice. Our server was extremely friendly. Our drinks didn't go dry, and she wasn't a pest.
Personally, the only reason I cannot more highly recommend this place is because it seems like it could really be something special, and it was really just acceptable. I know it is new, though. I will return, however, I'm going to wait a month or two until they have really hit their stride.
Excellent food and atmosphere! Great place to enjoy a drink and the skyline views during sunset especially. We had party of 5 and everyone really enjoyed their meals. The filet was mouthwatering! Best steak I have had in a very long time- food was fresh and reasonably priced, with lots of options for all palates and wallets
Review Source:This new 9200 square foot bar and restaurant just opened and it is very nice. Two huge patio areas that are elevated for skyline views. The rooftop bar is pretty cool for downtown Winston. Lots of comfy couches for seating. The inside bar area is beautiful and wait until you see the sinks in the restroom- elegant! We were there on opening night. We chatted with a few of the owners who seemed very nice. Things appeared to be going smoothly. We were offered free appetizer samples and I devoured the crab dip and the fried green tomatoes- those were really good!!! Nice place to take a date or grab a drink with the girls. I wish them success!
