First timer. Â Nice looking place. Dark, low ceilings. Very cool in here. Â I'm def looking forward to coming back for bands. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Standard/lame menu.
Ordered the veggie burger. It's homemade with avocados. Looks good. STONE COLD. I couldn't warm an ice cube on it.
+1 star for the nachos, which were nicely toasted and had plenty of toppings. Everything else gets ZERO stars. The freshest part of my meal was the red onion on my veggie burger. Everything else was wilted or had been frozen. But let me start at the beginning--drinks. Earlier that day, I had seen a good-looking wine list on their website. When the server asked us what we'd like to drink, I asked for the wine list. She said they didn't have one. The bartender, though, was able to tell me what they had. I ordered a malbec reserve, which tasted like it had been open for a week. Yuck. Should have complained, but didn't want to be a high-maintenance customer in this chill place. When it came time to order my meal, I was really excited about the toppings the menu listed for the veggie burger (avocado, cucumber, tahini). I asked the server what the veggie burger was made of and whether they made them in-house. She said they made them in-house but had to check on the ingredients. A solid 10 minutes later (we were the only customers there at 7pm on a Friday, by the way...red flag...) she returned and said "all we can say is the burgers definitely have corn and carrots in them." I should have realized this meant they did not make them on-premises and they really had no clue what they were made of. Stupidly, I ordered it anyway. The burger came with lettuce, tomato, and red onion. I had to ask here where the avocado/cucumber/tahini that were advertised on the menu were. She didn't even know that they were supposed to be there, and clearly the chef didn't either (or didn't care). She came back with some un-ripe avocado slices and a blob of brown muck that looked and tasted nothing like tahini sauce. She said they didn't have cucumber. Maybe they hadn't been shopping that week. The burger bun was at least a day old or had been sitting out all day uncovered. It was crusty in unpleasant ways. The fries that came with it were not homemade and had clearly been frozen. They were also extra greasy when you bit into them. Ick. My husband got the fish and chips and said it tasted OK but the fish had also been frozen. The restaurant is literally across the street from Gloucester Harbor. WHAT??
Beyond the wretched food, I have to say the service was pretty awful. The waitress was clueless about the menu & offerings, seemed overwhelmed by my basic questions, and never asked how my meal was (and didn't seem to think it was strange when I sent 80% of my meal back at the end). Also, the restaurant was dingy, furniture was stained and beaten-up, and the bathroom was dirty. Huge disappointment.
this place keeps getting WORSE and WORSE. Â Attitude from waitresses if you don't buy 10 drinks. Â Gee I can't have a consant stream of sugar or alcohol and I especially am NOT going to spend $$$$$$$$ on bottled water, so lose the attitude. Â
You need to be taught manners, waitress over 40 who thinks she's beautiful. Â Thankfully the bar manager who is young and has brown hair is nice to us always. Â Good bands but for God sakes, teach your female staff how to behave. Â I am tired of being uncomfortable here with the bitchiness and the horrid chairs. Â
Still horrid bathrooms, everyone looks at you when you have to go, how about some PRIVACY?????????????????
Don't go for the food, drinks are fine. The food is mediocre at best. Â I have always walked away feeling like I should have eaten somewhere else. They do have good live music on occasion, but for all the hassle Gloucester is to park in On Friday or Saturday night there are much better places to eat at.
Review Source:Once again, a bad experience. That's it. I'm never going there again. Spent evening inhaling smoke inside, in the room where the music is, because of their totally lame ass ventilation system (all the cigarette smoke from the patio comes straight into the back room, where the music is). I finally left cos my head and ears were ringing, all my clothes smell like a smoky gross bar. Plus I sat there nearly 20 minutes before waitress even noticed I was there to take my drink order. When I ask if they have sherry or port or champagne she looks at me like I got two heads. And they're supposed to be classy? They had none of above, so she offers me crappy Cooks, told me it was $6 a glass (cos I asked) then when I went to pay waitress tells me it's $7. Christ.
Review Source:This place rocks! Â Locals. Good cover band. Great interior and an awesome courtyard for smoking outside with your drink. Â We'd go back there for sure. The place picked up around 10 and was wall to wall by the end of the night. Â
And one other thing,
I've noticed Gloucester has a thing with their bathrooms doubling as art rooms/murals and such. Â This place is on point with that, the bathroom is painted in some funky art colors and is pretty hip as bathrooms go...I know its weird to mention a bathroom on a restaurant site but seriously its worth noting,
Patrick Bateman and friends would like this bathroom...
Dog Bar has great music, drinks, and the staff is friendly, but they really have to do something about the food. Â I've eaten there three times in the past year and the food has ranged from meh to uneatable. Â
A little brown/crisp is expected on grilled pizza, but there's too much charred bits on the bottom for my taste. Â The fish is usually a toss-up. Â I've had the cook come out and tell me not to order the salmon special, which I appreciated, so the next time I asked the waitress how the fish of the day was. Â She said, "Delicious", but it arrived poorly spiced with a sour taste. Â
The couple things they've done well in the past have been the hamburgers, artichoke dip (hard to mess up). Â The Caesar salad was reasonably fresh last time I went and had a lot of anchovies, which was nice.
I like going here to hang out, but I try to eat elsewhere first.
I always forget about this place when thinking of where to go.
Service was a little slow to start - there was only one other table when we got there - but was fine once our drink order was finally taken.
Drinks were great. Food was very good. We had the crab cakes, spinach dip, and the mediterranean platter and wings.
The back deck was great and the prices were reasonable.
We will  be back.
Absolute worst service I have ever experienced. We arrived at 8pm (there were four of us), and we were told there would be an hour wait. We went to the bar, had some drinks, and listened to the live band, which was fine. A little over an hour went by so we decided to ask when our table would be ready. The hostess was completely confused and told us that she thought we were a different party that left. We were given a table a few minutes later, which was fine. We sat down and it took about 10 minutes for anyone to come over to us. We got the menu which was only the pub menu consisting of appetizers, salads, burgers, and pizza. We asked for the full menu but were told it was not being served that night (it was a Saturday night). We should have at least been told when we arrived that the full menu was not available (we would have never waited an hour for the pub menu). We were starving at this point so we decided to stay, and we put in an appetizer and asked for a few minutes to decide on our meals. The appetizer came 45 minutes later. No one came to ask us if we wanted more drinks or to take our order while we tried to patiently wait. Finally we just decided to get up ourselves and order drinks at the bar one by one in order to get quicker service. When our appetizer came we asked if we could then put our order in and the waitress told us to give her a few minutes. About twenty minutes went by and still no one came to take our order. At that point we were all very frustrated and hungry and decided to leave. It was another 20 minute ordeal to get our check (which was only our single appetizer, nothing else). Beyond that the appetizer was mediocre at best. Needless to say we will not be going back.
Review Source:Very good experience. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the waitstaff even more so. The burgers are classically done and done right. Went on a Friday night and the restaurant section of the establishment was very quiet and not busy at all. Very quaint and low key if that's what you're looking for which can always be a plus.
Only issue was that a burger ordered medium-well came back almost rare but they slapped it back on the grill with no problems. I love this place and I'm definitely going back next time I'm in the area!
I love this place. Â I'm not in a position to give it five stars because I haven't eaten here in ages; I usually go for drinks and the entertainment, and the entertainment is always interesting and good, the drinks are great and reasonably priced, and, best of all, it's a totally comfortable and no-fuss place. Â The owner is super-friendly and he's always around, the waitstaff and bartenders are really nice and give very good service -- I never have a bad time here. They recently remodeled the dining room, which looks much nicer and uses the space better, and the back patio is delightful in the summer. Â :)
Review Source:I came here for dinner too early on a Tuesday to judge the "scene," but the food was great. Â Huge portions and (quite unexpectedly for a pub) great attention paid to plating & presentation.
We got seared tuna & crab cakes to start, and the sauces accompanying both were darn near perfect.
The chicken piccata was heavy on the chicken and the capers, relegating everything else to its deserved background.
A note on "ambiance" - it didn't get to me that much, but a screaming refrigerator fan audible in the main room can be fixed in 10 minutes. Â "That just started happening 4 days ago" is at least two days too long to let it go on!
Finally, extra points for carrying Magners (Bulmers) cider.
Excellent place to grab a drink, and catch up with an old friend, or make some new ones. Cozy dark atmosphere and talented musicians set the mood for any kind of evening. Â The owner Andy is always around to greet regulars and enjoy it all himself. Bonus points for carrying Hoegaarden bottles.
Review Source:They have a great outside patio and the band laying on Friday night was solid. Drink prices are a bit high and they wouldn't serve me a round of hornitos tequila shots After 12am. Something about liquor laws of some sort. Regardless, the staff is super friendly and the food is surprisingly good (we had a delicious burger). A great place to hit on a warm Gloucester summer night for good beers, live music, and a great atmosphere.
Review Source:This place was pretty hopping, especially for a late Sunday night. The kitchen was closed, but they offered to serve a couple of the appetizers that they could still make-we got the spinach and artichoke dip and chicken wings, both were tasty. I think they always have live music and the two dudes playing guitar that night were great! Everyone seemed to know each other and we were all having a great time until they kicked us out at 12:30...boo.
Review Source:I am just reviewing my experience at the actual bar at the Dog Bar restaurant. Â I have not eaten there so I cant comment on the food. Â I had been when it first opened as the Dog Bar and loved the martinis. Â So I finally got back there a few weeks ago. Â When I asked to see the martini list I had perused the first time I was there, the bartender told me that a martini menu had never existed and he had been working there since day 1 so he would know. Â I told him I was sure one HAD existed since the last time we were in there both my husband and I had ordered off of it but he was very insistent that one didnt exist to the point that we were starting to think we were crazy until the woman sitting next to me whispered "I remember it too" So we ordered wine. Â Wont be clamoring to go to the bar again where a bartender argues with you, but I like the atmosphere- have to get into the dining room to eat.
Review Source:Casual neighborhood dining with impeccable, friendly service at The Dog Bar/65 Main. Located in the West End Block of Main Street in Gloucester (formerly home to The White Rainbow). Offering a wide variety of choice in warm, comfortable food. Â Incredible place and great hours. Food is served in the dinning room and bar from 5pm -10pm Tuesday - Sunday and the Bar is open 5pm - 1am Tuesday - Sunday.
The Dog Bar, adjoining 65 Main, offers the same full menu, but with the informal atmosphere of a great neighborhood tavern.
Reasonable prices, an exciting wine list and creative beer selection as well as stellar martini's created just for this Bar.  The staff  makes you feel like your home.  It's the perfect "great local restaurant," and an inviting neighborhood bar.
Also features a lively funk jazz band in the dinning room every other Wednesday night from 10pm - 1 am. And on Sunday nights, features everyone's favorite local musician, Inge Berg with his Red Acustic guitar, in the Bar from 9:30pm to 1am.

Once upon a time, my husband and I finally tried to visit the White Rainbow, only to find that it had closed. We recently got to check out the space now that it's reopened as 65 Main. It's a lovely room, warm brick walls and a nicely intimate space. I only passed though, but the bar seemed pretty cozy as well. However... the drinks menu (all-important in my book)! Sigh. There is a reason I end up in Boston if I want a real drink, and sadly the "Martini" menu was full of vodka-based drinks with demented DeKuper flavored... what would you call the alcohol that they use for these artificially fruity boozes? Anyhow.
In a situation like this, I order a Negroni (equal parts Campari, gin, sweet vermouth -- hard to mess up, no? And with three ingredients, I don't feel like too much of an ass being all specific and all) and gave the recipe to our server. I instead got a glass full of gin with a bit of Campari splashed in -- not the strangest "Negroni" I'd ever been given (that was a pint glass full of ice and gin with a splash of Campari; seriously, there must have been like 8 ounces of gin in that thing). The wine selection was nice enough, so I abandoned my gin for a glass of red.
We all seemed pretty happy with our entrees. I felt like a salad with grilled chicken, and it was really side-dish sized which I wasn't expecting and the server did not mention. Dessert was sort of forgettable -- good, but nothing to write home about: a sentiment which actually covered all aspects of the meal. We lingered over coffee but once the check was paid, our server didn't offer refills or additional drinks which was also disappointing.
Overall, the experience did not live up to the ambiance upon walking into the restaurant. Hopefully they will figure it out over time.
