I'm done with this store for good.  No self-checkout before 8am anymore!

Clearly they don't want any business from morning commuters who are in a hurry.  For over a year I have been stopping here multiple times per week to pick up my auto-breakfast.  I would utilize the self-checkout terminal and usually be in and out in 120 seconds.  But back in December I started having problems where I would find the self-checkouts closed, not occasionally but every single time.  Once they didn't have any bagels yet at 7:30, and another time there was an enormous line to check out at the one open cashier.

This week I got the scoop from Irene, the super-sweet regular morning cashier:  they don't open the self-checkouts before 8am anymore.

Say what?  Irene is a really nice lady, so I don't want to direct my ire at her.  Thus I extend my middle fingers to the heartless, faceless entity that is Dominick's #2889.  You are dead to me, 2889.  I'd rather go hungry in the morning than spend my precious time standing in your checkout lines.  Give Irene a raise though.

This Dominick's is relatively new and very close to my house. Though I mostly tend to visit the Jewel in Northcenter, I do really enjoy the Signature Cafe soups that you get at Dominick's. Sodium bombs, I know... but when you are restricted to a diet of soft foods, I welcome the flavor.

Aside from that, this Dominick's is a-okay. I'll come here when I need things such as Funfetti cake mix, but will stick to Trader Joe's and HarvesTime for most of my shopping.

I kind of felt bad leaving my 1 star review up after the remodel. Yay for how clean and bright it is, plus the roof parking has never been full when we've gone. Also a huge fan of the For You deals they have that you can add to your cart. Produce still can be questionable - I never thought getting a good red onion would be so difficult in the city of Chicago. Thanks for the upgrade, now there's only one sketch supermarket to avoid instead of two.

It has definitely been a big improvement since their remodeling. I love shopping here and the atmosphere is just nice to be in. I usually shop at night so it's really never been too busy for me and I have not faced the issue of how my things are bagged so I'm giving this place 5 stars!

While this store is a bit out of my way, I make the effort to go here because it is a pretty nice shopping experience.  Dominick's has always been my favorite Chicagoland large-store grocery chain of choice for several reasons and this store reinforces that preference.

First, clean new store with great space and lighting (no bumper car carting here as in many boutique grocers and an open layout to stroll around in a relaxed manner). Next, good prices that meet and far beat Jewel (no contest here).  Last, the specialty sections (meat, deli, fruits/veg, etc) all staffed well with friendly service.  I will be back.

I'm kind of in love with this Dominick's for a few reasons.  It's close enough that I can walk from my place and they also have enough parking if I choose to drive (way to take advantage of the roof).

I plan my purchases around what is on sale that particular week.  I like how Dominick's post the whole flyer online.  It's helpful since I don't get the paper and it helps to save the environment.

It's easy to find an employee if I can't find something.  It did take a little bit to get used to the set up, now I know where everything is.  The cashiers are nice.  They are great about asking if you need help in the parking lot with loading your cars.  I haven't seen that kind of service since the parcel pick up lane at my hometown grocery store.

Generally speaking I've been pleased with Dominick's. Or at least as pleased as I was when I shopped at Jewel, which is admittedly very lukewarm. (Both stores seem to have ridiculously poor inventory control and sub par produce, particularly compared to Harvest Time.)

In any case, three weekends in a row they have had no baggers. Not a one in sight. This is ridiculous, and also clearly not a coincidence. I will be putting in a complaint. If things don't improve, may be reassessing the switch from Jewel to Dominick's.

the inefficiency of the baggers never fails to amaze me. not once has anything remotely cold ever been bagged in my insulated bag. not once. lots of detergent and tampons, but no creamer or cheese. what is even more baffling is that they're not even rushing as they put the eggs under the detergent or lay the frozen pizza flat on the bottom of the cart, before loading several 12 packs around it. no. they're slow as hell. is it stupidity, apathy, lack of training, what?

I have been meaning to update this for a while.  THANK YOU Dominick's for listening to the people and demolishing the old, filthy, scary store and replacing it with a beautiful, clean, modern store.  I love having a Starbucks inside and there are always lots of samples throughout the store.  The people who work here are friendly and helpful.  I also like the smaller shopping carts.  My biggest complaint is that everything is pretty overpriced, not Whole Foods overpriced, but still too expensive.  But I guess that's just how city grocery stores roll.

This is so much better then the old dominicks. The satff is super friendly and helpful. I always get fresh produce. This is the only grocery store that I shop at.

I never went to the "old" Dominick's, but from what I hear, it was pretty bad. Well, now...this is much better!

My boyfriend and I have been coming here more often now than Whole Foods since there never seems to be a huge "after work" crowd which makes shopping a breeze! The aisles are big, there is a nice parking structure, the layout of the store is nice, and I always tend to get an onslaught of people trying to help me. Sometimes their produce isn't always the best looking, but I'm willing to forgive Dominick's for this, since they aren't Whole Foods.

My only gripes are that the checkout and bagging can take forever depending on the employee. They don't seem to know what to do with reusable bags, and I can't tell you you how many times we've gotten a list of questions about how we want things bagged in them. They also don't carry a few of my favorite food brands that other groceries seem to have everywhere else; as in, they stopped selling the chocolate yogurt I liked (who would do such a thing??), they don't carry Wolfgang Puck soup (oh the horror!!), and for whatever reason, they carry every organic food item from Amy's Kitchen, but not the pesto tortellini (IMO the best thing they make)!! Ah well, I can overlook those things since I no longer dread going grocery shopping! Keep it up Dominick's!

PS- Brownie points also awarded to the many employees who explained their preferred card system to me. I hadn't used mine since college, but luckily they still had my name on file and even gave me pro tips on how to update my info online and how to use my account to receive coupons and other awesome things. Sweet!

Love this Dominicks! This store has really come a long way. I used to avoid it like a crazy person! Love all the fresh fruits, the selection of frozen foods, the fact that the employees overheard my sadness about them not having 1% milk and then bringing it back! Way cool.

Sushi is fresh and yummy, the deli is super fresh and all employees are so personable! I really enjoy shopping here and can spend an hour walking up and down the aisles.

If you're in the neighborhood, check it out. Enjoy.

Yay New Dominicks! I've lived in this neighborhood for 6 years and words can't express how thankful I am about the remodel and reopening. I like having a store within walking distance that is open later and earlier - 6am to midnight and has gluten free options as well. Sometimes taking a train or bus to Whole Foods just isn't an option.

All good things to those who wait, apparently. Also, Kearby K....really? You're going to complain about the use of stickers? Really? You are a silly person. Just so silly. That is all.

Now, usually I don't do this... but uh...
I'mma go 'head and address this one review a lil below this one...

This is to the Kearby K. dude
Hey, you got this store confused.
The new layout is more than cool
You don't have to act like a tool
Stairs are next to the elevator
    You're just being an obviator
You must blind if you can't see
How great this store has come to be

Now they got all really "fresh fruit"
There is no more "expired food"
    Pick out some gruyere cheese
    and some imported teas
while they custom butcher your beef

    It's the rebuild of Dominick's
Old one wasn't even half this
Got fresh soups and fresh salads
The claims of dirt are invalid
I always get helped with a smile
Which makes me leave with a smile
    Just the bakery section
Makes all my trips there worth while

So, you know, when this place reopened I got REALLY excited. I went the first day it opened and bought a ton of stuff for super discounted prices (I think I bought, like, fifteen cans of Progresso soup). They sent me all these coupons in the mail. They had a pianist there for the opening, and fancy elevators, and it was clean and new and shiny. (It still seems surprisingly small, though, given the massive plot of land it sits on.)

But it turns out that it's still a Dominick's. I've been back once since that first day (basically just to use the aforementioned coupons). Really, why would I go there? I can get everything I need at Target and Harvestime. Dominick's is expensive, and though there's a lot of parking it feels like a huge pain to park on the roof, and their produce still isn't as good as Harvestime's. (Seriously, the second time I went in, they had an entire display of rotting apples. Mmmm.)

This place gets three stars for improvement and effort, but there are still way better choices.

    Ahem.  *cough*

    Is this thing on.

    *blink, blink*

    I am writing a review.

    *blink*

    Am I Elite again?!?!

    *blink, blink*

Holy krikes.  It's only been about forever.  I decided to go on hiatus from all activities until Prince WIlliam got engaged. You know...breathing.  Reviewing.  Going out with friends.  The usual.   Thank God the waits over.  Woohoo!

Oh, yeah.  Dominick's.   This place looks great.  The remodel job is phenomenal.  I lived by this Dominick's in '08 and I can tell you it was what I lovingly referred to as the "trashy Dominick's."   It was small and there was the oddest assortment of goods available with no rhyme or reason to shelf placement.  And they charged $10.25 for a roll of quarters.  AWESOME!  Capitalism at it's finest, baby (see my old review.  Perhaps I should have updated that one instead of rewriting this one.  Oh, who cares).

Anyway, this place is AMAZING now.  The wine selection is great.  There is a full deli that includes an olive bar, ready made sandwiches, and even two soups to choose from.   The staff is courteous and will go out of their way to help you find something.  The produce selection is great....nice variety, fresh, and well stocked.  The bakery selections are vast and the breads are always freshly baked...some still warm!  Can't go wrong with french bread and chardonnay.  Some things will NEVER change.

We stopped here last Friday evening; it was cold and damp.  The perfect fall evening.  We picked up wine, french bread, and some things for dinner.  We were in and out and headed home in no time.  I am grateful this place is so close!

I am in love with the new Dominicks! I moved to Chicago about a year and a half ago and the only grocery stores close to my house were the old Dominicks (smelly, small and no selection) or the Jewel on Lincoln. I picked the lesser of two evils and I've been reluctantly shopping at Jewel. Every time I go there I find myself wandering the aisles muttering to myself about what a crappy grocery store it is and how they never have what I'm looking for. I had to go to three stores in order to get fresh produce, decent cuts of meat and staple items. This was a huge pain.

I went to the new Dominicks over the weekend and it's everything that I've been missing. They have a wide variety of produce that's fresh and doesn't look like it was thrown off of the back of a truck and into the store. They also have a great selection of cheeses and the meat department had some nice steaks and fresh fish available. I also found all of the employees to be very helpful.

The thing that I love the most is that there is a wide variety of products to choose from rather than just one or two brands. They also have more than one bottle of shampoo on the shelves - in fact they have a whole aisle with shampoo, conditioner, soap and medicine - just like a real grocery store.

I've finally found my one stop for grocery shopping that's close to my house and carries everything that I need.

I was so excited for the new huge stores!  I was under the impression they were going to be these new awesome stores that were different and more like Whole Foods on North Ave.  I went tonight for the first time and it was exactly like an old Dominicks but a weird lay out.

-Not one person offered any help.
-The store was dirty. Crap all over the floor
-The isles are tall and make you feel like you are in a warehouse
-The organic items each have a sticker on them.  No Pesticides but Stickers!
-The layout is counter intuitive in all ways
-Jewl Osco has much better booze.
-The Deli, Butcher, Seafood, Starbucks, Bank, Pharmacy and all are really cool but they close before 8pm!?!
-You have to take an elevator up and down and that takes a lot of time if you just need to pick up something.
-It is not a place you would ever want to go if you are not grocery shopping
    -There is nothing special.

I just see no reason not to keep going to whole foods and whatever grocery is convenient  for quick stuff.

Maybe its OK but I am really disappointed.

Oh yea and that damn card thing!!!!  Why do you make me cary a card to get a price.  Its stupid- just give everyone a deal.  At Jewl they at least enter the card for you.

Now, I thought I'd already visited grocery hell on earth (see my Jewel review).  But no.  Dominick's was not to be outdone by its nemesis.

This place smells like a street fest port-a-potty, the people who work there are straight up frightening, and within 2 minutes of setting foot in there I felt like I needed to rush home, jump in my shower, curl up in a fetal position, and cry it out.  I wish I was kidding.

I can't imagine any circumstance in which a sane person would set foot in this place twice.

It's almost comical how terrible this Dominick's is.  That's saying a lot, considering most Dominick's are verging on unshoppable just the way they are...but this Dominick's is the true exception.  It's a goddamn portal into hell.

One time I came in to pick a few things up and upon walking around the store, I became convinced that they were closing.  The shelves were barren.  Literally barren, as in 'No more fucking eggs barren'.  That pretty much seems to be the case nearly every time i've stopped in thereafter.  They either have a terrible selection or no selection to even choose from.

This is the red-headed stepchild of Dominick's.  I bet every time corporate comes, they're praying to god they don't get a visit!  Ha!  Laughable.

I would encourage others to go there if you want the following:

    - items that are grossly past expiration.

    - " not quite right" deli items (i routinely admire the dried out  and sick looking pickels at the deli counter)

    - smelly rotten produce

    - you want to wait at least 15 mintues in line

    - broken bottles on the shelve, dirty carts

    - aggressive panhandlers that wait outside... nearly 24 hours a day.

    happy shopping~!!

It's a city grocery store.  It's not as big as a super-huge suburban Dominick's nor as big as the Dominick's on Roosevelt.  Then again, it's not as small as the corner grocery store either.

It's a city grocery store.  The people are not as helpful as the people in a super-huge suburban Dominick's.  In fact, they are not helpful at all.  Feel free to wander around the store looking confused.  Smile at the silent cashier as she rings your purchases.  Feel appreciative as the only person who addresses you directly and kindly is the girl bagging (granted, she wrapped my purchases in plastic bags and then put them in my re-use/recycle bag, but, hey, she was nice).  Wait in line at the Customer Service Desk for a Chicago Card.  Be told the card costs $25 for $20 fare.  Ask kindly why there is a discrepancy in price.  Be told that the store has always sold it that way because that's the way it is.  Point out the part that says there is a $5 fee waiver for first-time users.  Watch as the person searches her brain for an excuse.  Listen as she says well, I can't help you.  Be pushed to another person.  Listen to the woman say that you will be sent a one-day pass.  Point out the part about the waiver on the legal form.  Be brushed off as the woman says well, customers have told me that they are sent a one-day pass.  Leave the store thinking about the oxy-moron that is customer service.

Rinse and repeat at the Walgreens across the street.

This place is the 7th circle of hell.
Every time I go in here all I can think is "get out." I NEVER shop here. It's like calling down the thunder. I wish I could give it -10 stars.
Oh and sometimes I get the feeling that they treat this place like the last known sighting of the plague so corporate will come along and close it. Kind of letting it turn into dust on purpose, but it's been that way since I was a kid.
If it were nicer maybe I wouldn't be ordering from Yes Thai, Fireside and Costello's every week since I would actually have groceries. (cop out, I know, but it's that nasty).

This is the World's Most Depressing Dominick's. It's like the corporate office had no idea it exists.

The 3 stars it gets is for the Bakery.  I've had many last minute cakes that were better than most. The cakes behind glass in a refrigerated case, (when you can find someone to put it in a box for you) are excellent. That is when they are stocked but you just never know what they will have. Late in the day they tend to be empty. The buttercream cakes are disgusting as are any of them that are sitting out.

The produce is horrible. Last time I was there they had 1 lb pkgs of strawberries for under $2. Inside the packages i could see that they were either overripe and/or moldy. Who could sell that?

    Terrible, just terrible.

Dingy, crowded, poor selection, and the worst produce section I've ever seen.  Oh and all overpriced to boot.  And why is it that everytime I'm there I get the cashier in training?

This is a very convenient store for my wife and me, but after living right near this Dominick's for three months now, we've given up.  It's horrible.  It's like Hell with vegetables.  Expensive.  Dirty.  One cashier didn't even recognize green beans.  He had to ask what they were.  Twice.  Saturday afternoons the store is still empty.  Who's financing this grocery store anyway?

I've never been a big fan of Dominick's , and this one is a pretty bad one. I have shopped here quite a bit because... well ... I'm a complete whore. If I'll save a couple of bucks , I would probably shop at Bin Laden's grocery. It always seems dirty and or dingy , on more than one occasion I've purchased or almost purchased out of date items , and the selection is pretty slim. The meat never looks good here , the prices rarely good , and the fresh fish is a crap shoot every time. I've seen way worse places , so I'll give it an extra star for charity. Shop here only if you must. The one on Western near Belmont is way better.

This is the WORST grocery store EVER! Honestly... I could list the 50 health code violations you are likely to see every time you go in, but let me just give you this simple advice: just don't ever go in.

The trashiest Dominick's to ever exist in the city of Chicago. Food is often expired, the place looks dirty at all times, they have no variety what-so-ever, and the credit card machines are always broken. Not to mention it is the smallest major-chain grocery store I have ever seen.

If there was anything they could do to make this place nicer I would say go for it, but it is beyond repair: TEAR IT DOWN!!!

I live 2 blocks away (seriously, 2 blocks!) and I will travel far and wide to avoid this place!

I call for a Trader Joe's in its place... it will be the only one in the city with a decent parking lot!

This store actually scares me.  It is my closest grocery store, but I will never go there again.  Here's why:

    1.  They doctor the produce to make it look fresher.  They cut off rotten parts and peel old items like parsnips and carrots.

    2.  A large proportion of the dairy products are past the expiration date.

    3.  They regularly sell meat that is past the expiration date.  They mark it at  a discount, but still -- that creeps me out.

    Yuck!  Don't go there!

So I'm just gonna go right out and say it.....this Dominick's gives me the flippin creeps... and not because they are small, unkempt, understocked, and employ questionable cleaning habits...
                         In fact no...
it's all because they let a man named spiros bag groceries..

So i guess the only real reason i go here is because they're open late and there is always parking...but thats not the point...the point is that every time i go to the store...there is always a bagger named spiros (always) and he always puts the meat in with other dry, non-washable goods.
maybe im just a compulsive weirdo who doesn't want to contract salmonella or E-coli and die a horrible death,....maybe it's just me
but every time i end up with him as a bagger, and every time i ask him politely  to PUH-LEAZE put the meat separately  aka in it's own bag.
Does this seem so very hard..do i ask for much...apparently yes

I say boo this Dominick's and Boo Spiros

I thought that bigger chains had something like quality control...when I go to this Dominick's, I start to believe that isn't true.

Almost every time I've gone here, this store doesn't have some basic thing on my list. I wanted to get some garlic...no, they didn't have it. No ginger, popping corn or hotdog buns either.

Of course the produce section here is the worst part of the store. I'm really not sure why they even bother with the tiny section...everything there sucks....and is overpriced...I'm happy I never buy anything there and Harvestime is 2 blocks away.

Unfortunately, this Dominick's is not one of the ones slated to close...damn!

Agreed and seconded. I would walk to this Dominicks after getting out of work at 11pm to get some supplies for a nice cheap dinner at home. Not only does this place have a scary, creepy vibe to it but the staff seemingly go out of their way to not help out. It's like they think they're the only grocery store for miles, why make an effort?

Their produce section might as well not exist. What small selection they offer is low quality, often times spoiled or just plain unappetizing. I've been fortunate enough to have avoided their meat department for the most part, opting for frozen meats instead. They only advantage I can see, really, is this place is so shifty you can usually get in and out fast as there won't be much of a line.
