I am just sooo lazy, that I sent my husaband to go get take out whilst I lounged in the healing waters of our jacuzzi...that being said I relish a good BBQ. Â I know that at times presentation and taste can be compromised with take out. Hubby said that ordering and servce for the take out was smooth and speedy.
The food arrived nicely packed in a variety of containers. Â Baked beans, cole slaw, and potato salad were in nice little round lidded containers. Â The BBQ and brisket were in styrofoam containers. Â Everything was ok...We both found the pulled pork and brisket to be not extremely tasty, but "OK". Â I would have like some extra BBQ sauce to jazz up the pulled pork. Â The sauce itself did taste really good, just not enough of it. Â We both found ourselves adding salt to everything.
The setting has plenty of space (although you wouldn't be able to tell from the front entrance). It's festive, looks like its set for country dancing, but from their schedule you'll be glad to know that they not only have ladies night with Karaoke...but they also have Zumba!!!! You heard right.
Review Source:Wow, wow and wow again.
I am only grading for breakfast, and it was fantastic. Â We were in Berkeley Springs for several day for a wedding. Â We stumbled upon this place for the first morning. Â We had a large party and they were very accommodating. Â The place is really very large on the inside. Â Anyway, we got a nice area and all looked at the menus. Â I think we were a little disappointed at first with the selection. Â It seemed a bit small and there were none of the freaky breakfast items I have grown to expect. Â So after further examination, your realize that it is good old fashion breakfast with a few twists, e.g. home made corned beef hash. Â And, you could actually order a pancake, yep, just one.
So, by the time our final day had arrived, we made our third and final trip. Â This was simply to verify all of the great feelings we had about the place.
So here you go:
1) Pancakes are some of the best I have ever had, bar none.
2) Eggs and Bacon were always cooked as ordered.
3) Biscuits and gravy, were really good. Â There was no Pillsbury can in sight. Â These were fresh, hot and fluffy with hot fresh sausage gravy
4) Corned Beef Hash was really good. Â I would not say Rhode Island diner great, but for south of the Mason Dixon, not bad at all.
5) Service was super friendly, attentive and engaging. Â
6) Price, this was seriously affordable, even on a tight budget
So it is not often you get to have breakfast and a lot of fun all at the same time.
I've wanted to try the EarthDog for awhile, and finally I had the opportunity. So we did have a time line, so we sat in the front area, kind of kitchen like, very casual. We could see a better appointed room to our right, which looked much cozier! ordered the pulled pork and rib platter, which comes with small piece of french bread, Â and we got the baked beans and coleslaw as our sides. The sides were average. The pulled pork was exceptional, and the ribs were awful. My guess is they were sitting around too long or overheated and dried out, thought the taste was good. Both meats had good smokey flavor. The service was slow, but it really had more to do with the kitchen than the actual service, our waitress couldn't do enough for us!. Would I go back? Yes, worth another look see. The ladies room was a dump and if you're over 200 lbs, you'd have a hard time getting in and out, especially out! One big hurray was I left my wallet on the counter, and realizing my error went back, to find the waitress on her way out to find me, wallet intact. That, my friends, is impressive!
Review Source:This place looks like a West Virginian went to Berkeley, California for a week, smoked some pot and came back with the bright idea to open a cafe. Â Food is subpar quality (scrambled eggs were overdone, biscuit came straight from a Pilsbury package, and Lipton black tea was lukewarm). Â Huge disappointment and the service was a joke...slow, unattentive, and scattered.
Review Source:We decided to check out the Earthdog Cafe during a girls getaway in Berkley Springs. We were in a hurry and it took them a while to seat our group of 8 but once we were seated and we explained we had a little over a half hour to eat our waitress was awesome about getting out our food quickly. I didn't have high expectations for the food and I was very pleasantly surprised. The food was very good and it was good quality. Our entire group was happy with the food and service. We loved the homemade chips so much we stopped there again later just to get more to go. Next time we're back in Berkley Springs we will go back!
Review Source:Earthdog is a quirky little place with some good barbecue. The restaurant has a hippy vibe, with a weird mish-mosh of decor and tie dye T-shirts for sale. I glanced at the place while driving by the first time, and thought it was a vegetarian/health food type restaurant, unitl I noticed the 2 small smokers out front. Service is a little haphazard here, although very friendly. The sign in the entrance says "Please wait to be seated", but if you wait in the entry-way you'll not get noticed. They had plenty of tables when we went in last night, but none of them were clean, so we sat at the counter. So it's all very casual, and i f you're OK with that, you may just enjoy yourself. Doug and I both went for the 2 meat BBQ plate with 2 sides...I had the ribs and chicken, and Doug had the ribs and pulled pork. The ribs here are good...nicely smoked and tender, although mine weren't heated all the way through. I actually prefer that to ribs that are overcooked on the grill when reheated, so they don't lose points for that, however. The chicken was good too...done well and slathered with their sauce. The pulled pork was the real winner...flavorful and juicy. I see from other reviews that the pulled pork failed to impress, so maybe they have consistency problems here...last night it was good. We liked the sides...baked beans, potato salad and veggie of the day all satisfied. Earthdog does more than barbecue, and has a full menu with  burgers, steaks, soups, salads...even a veggie burger. The restaurant seems to be a bit of a hub of social life in this charming town, with live music in the bar on weekends.
Review Source:I had a really sad experience here. Â My wife and I ate here for lunch last Saturday and were really disappointed. Â Wife had the pulled pork BBQ and it was so bad that she could not eat it. Â I tried it and spit it out. Â The meat was just too fatty and the flavor was non existent. Â I had the steak and cheese and it was prepared fine but there was nothing special about it in anyway. Â Our server was really slow. Â After we ate we sat around for about 30 minutes just dealing with paying the bill. Â
Just our experience. Â Yours may be better.
My friend and I were very happy. Cute, unpretentious, home-grown atmosphere. Our wait-staff was a little discombobulated because there was a staff shortage, but she was so silly and nice and so were the other two women I saw chattin' it up with their tables. The ladies are tongue-in-cheek sassy. Â I ordered the half-slab with coleslaw and my friend ordered the brisket/slab combo with 2 sides. As I was getting ready to dig into my coleslaw I complained that all the coleslaw I had had "out" recently was disgustingly sweet. I was almost shocked that Earthdog's was perfect. Perfect. My friend loved her's too. A hint of sweetness and not too mayonaissey. Yum, yum. The ribs were delicious and were on the sweeter, saucy side, which is indicative of this region. We both thought they were lovely. My friend also loved her brisket and baked beans. We couldn't have left more content.
Review Source:A wonderful little down-home place! Â The BBQ is good, and the baked beans are especially tasty. Â The chili is scrumptious. Â Prices are very reasonable. Â And you can get breakfast all day! Â Their hash and eggs is one of my favorites. Â All breakfast items are a la carte, so you have to order everything separately: eggs, hash or bacon, toast, etc. Â Their iced tea tastes fresh brewed too. Â Their chili nachos are an excellent value. Â Wish they were open later. Â It's easier to park in the back if you don't mind walking up an incline. Â They have a bar and occasionally live music.
Review Source:Went here this past Monday for dinner as we were all wiped out from hiking Paw Paw Tunnel and trails. Dinner was good. The table had pulled pork, BBQ ribs and beef brisket. Everyone was very pleased with the tenderness of the meat and the over all flavor. The baked beans are awesome as is the homemade potato chips. We were there for Happy Hour and enjoyed 1.59 Domestic bottles. The service was fantastic. My only complaint really about this place is they close at 8pm!!! except Fridays and Saturdays in which they stay open a whole hour later. Id like to see this place open until 11pm on the weekends and feature a local band/artist. We'll be back on our next visit.
Review Source:The baked beans and cornbread are exceptional here. The BBQ chicken and spareribs were a bit on the dry side, while the shredded BBQ pork was pretty average. Service was forgettable. Despite the run down state of the building, the furniture and decoration choices give it a kind of charm.
My biggest complaint is about the homemade chips. I ordered the jalapeno chips with my meal, thinking that they would be on a milder heat level, but instead the they were much more hot than I had anticipated. It appeared that instead of using actual jalapeno peppers, they had just liberally doused the chips in powdered cayenne pepper- a much spicier variety than the jalapeno. Only order them if you can take the heat!
This place has good bbq- my friend and I had  the same entree- love me two times - she had pulled pork and chicken, I had brisket and short ribs.
The potato salad was simple, good, the broccolli was skimpy not seasoned- but cooked perfectly. Beer and wine selection was average- one local beer. The staff were  hard working people- our waitress was handling 7 tables and doing a nice job- they care.
There is a sign that says "Hippies use back door, no exceptions"
maybe it was the moment- but I got a laugh. Â I like to leave people lots of stars- it makes the world a happy place and doesnt cost me anything- but Im docking them for playing 5 Â Journey songs in a row. mileage may vary.. but yeah- Im taking my star back- 'with open arms'...and' I wont stop believing'...whew....
Talk about a down home barbecue place! Â Berkeley Springs really needed a place like this and I am so glad they have it now. Â I am a DC resident and just love to eat out so this quaint little town of Berkeley Springs.
The food is quite good but the service is nothing to scream home about...but at a barbecue place I guess you don't expect god service. Â I had the barbecue pork dinner and it was good! Â
Definitely a place to go for a good home barbecue meal.
Grabbed lunch here and was pleasently suprised by the service, food and prices. Got the BBQ latter with a side of Cheese Fries - like Tony reccommended - and enjoyed it very much. Â The BBQ sauce was a sweet variation and they don't offer a vinegar-based sauce, as I prefer. However it is still a mean BBQ. Earthdog cafe is reccommended for visitors to Berkeley Springs.
Review Source:Loved the Earth Dog Cafe for breakfast! Â
It's hearty fare; platter sized pancakes, organic eggs & chipped beef and gravy biscuits suited my family just fine. Â Be prepared for jumbo sized everything. Â Unending coffee and friendly staff in a place that feels like a locals joint makes me want to come again when in town.... need to sample lunch and dinner. Â Nice vibe - to borrow their hippie speak!
