We made our first visit here today (4/20) for breakfast. Â I had a breakfast quesadillas and my wife had menudo. Â Both meals were excellent. Hey you east Durhamites, drag your stupid butts outta bed on a Saturday morning and have a great meal here. There were too few people here, considering the quality of the food. Â This is a hidden gem that justifies a visit. Â We shall be back.
Review Source:I was skeptical of this place because of its location, but it is seriously amazing. Once you walk in, it's like a whole different world and the food is SO good. It's not typical Mexican food...it's truly authentic. I got the Pork tacos and they were ah-mazing, as were the HOUSE Margaritas (hint; they have pineapple juice in them), and the guacamole. Seriously, go here. Don't let the parking lot sketch you out..this place is worth it. LOVE IT.
Review Source:It is so hard to find authentic Mexican Restaurants that actually have GOOD ingredients. I think this one is a winner:)
We went to El Coyote Bar & Grill last Friday and feel in love with the place.
ENVIRONMENT: Don't be fooled by the exterior; the shopping center it is in has another Mexican Restaurant in it (Las Palmas), and the signage exterior design isn't great BUT the food and interior is warm and welcoming. When we went at 8pm on a Friday, there was practically no one in there (one guy at the bar and one guy eating in a booth alone). We found this a bit strange but pressed on since we heard great things. I am glad we did!
FOOD: We ordered the Guacamole for an appetizer (It is a #MUST). It came out like a work of art, and was the BEST Guac I've ever had. Seriously.
I ordered the Tacos de Asada and My Fiancee' ordered the Tacos de Tinga. Â Both were great, but I have to admit: The Tacos de tinga had more flavor. It was a little spicy so be warned (if you're the type that needs that warning).
DRINKS: We got the house margaritas and oh man--- they were great! If you like your Margaritas flavorful (not any of that insta-green, sweet stuff), this is your beverage. Had a hint of Pineapple Juice, and not a lot, but decent amount of liquor. They were $6.50 (reasonable) but on Mondays I hear they have for $4. Needless to say, we will be back on Mondays:)
PRICE: Reasonable price, but if you are expecting the dirt cheap prices from your, "run of the mill" Â Mexican restaurants, this isn't your place. It is really good food and just a little bit (not much) more expensive then those other restaurants. Â For two entrees, two drinks, and an appetizer- we paid around $40 without tip.
OVERALL: I'd recommend this to anyone tired of your standard Mexican joint. The food is great, place is clean, staff is very, very nice and you get away with a good meal. Â I will be back again!
What a fun restaurant!
We normally go to the neighboring Mexican restaurant, but we decided to try El Coyote on a whim one night, and it's a good thing we did!
I don't know enough about Mexican food to say how El Coyote is different, but it is. The dish preparation seemed a little more artful, and the menu didn't have the usual six-thousand different dishes; something I appreciate, since I value quality over quantity.
Our server (a young lady whose name sadly escapes me) was absolutely delightful, and El Coyote has quickly moved up from "I need fast Mexican food" to "let's go somewhere fun for date night!"
You are reading Yelp because you are looking for places like El Coyote. Â This restaraunt has menu items I've never heard of before, and so far everything I've tried has been exquisite.
If you're looking for green sour cream served as guacomole, or the Lunch Special #2, this is not your type of Mexican food. Â If you're still reading, you should take a look at the menu on El Coyotes' website.
I'm a huge fan of the green chile appetizer, (with housemade tortilla chips so good, I split them in half to savor each one). Â The mixed drinks are also a must-try. Â Just order the "El Coyote" when you walk in.
Be warned, the area looks rough, but I live nearby and it's safe. Â Also, the service isn't great, but the servers try hard. Â It's worth it for the high quality of the food, but just be forewarned.
This place has very good food for reasonable prices. Â Like almost every new restaurant I try, I went here initially b/c I had a Groupon. Â I had the guacamole appetizer, which was some of the best I've had in the south. Â I've had some ... interesting ... experiences w/ guacamole, since moving to the south. Â El Coyote's guacamole is chunky and fresh, I could taste the fresh avocados, cilantro, and lime. Â Their chips are also very good, they're thick, but not greasy or heavy. Â As an entree, I had the mole. Â The chile and chocolate flavors were well-balanced, and allowed the flavor of the chicken through. Â The mole was served w/ grilled veggies and Spanish rice. Â Both were good; the veggies needed a little salt and I'm not big on Spanish rice, but it was good. Â I ordered a flour tortilla to help w/ some of the extra mole; the tortilla was good, light and fluffy. Â Â
The decor inside is very nice and clean. Â I especially like the vertical, tubular fish tank in the front. Â The booths and chairs are comfy, the waitstaff is very polite and attentive.
I have to speak out against reviewer Kirby P's assertion that if you're not "adventurous" this place might not be for you. Â There is nothing adventurous about the food here, it's Mexican food done well. Â If this is your idea of "adventurous," you've probably led a very sheltered culinary life. Â Give this place a try, it's definitely worth it.
My only complaint is that the TV in the bar area can be too loud, somewhat drowning out the jazz and other background music in the dining area.
I don't want El Coyote thinking they are perfect but 5 stars is fair. Great service, and great food. Puts their neighbor to shame.
Inside decor is lovely, Â
But really guys, do something about your frontage, I never would have stopped if not for a referral. A few plants, some paint, some color.
Can't wait to return and write a more detailed review. Â Glad I live nearby.
The food is amazing and authentic. We had the queso fundido for an appetizer. It was a bit on the thick (eat it with a fork) side but when spread over the fresh, homemade tortillas, ahhhh heaven! Husband had the Adobada and I had the Enchiladas Mole Poblano - with flavors straight out of Mexico. Both the mole and adobada were so smooth and flavorful, I can't wait to go back! The refried beans were also homemade and chunky. I'm so excited to find great mexican food in Durham, and it's well worth the trip out to this remote corner. Plus after eating, you can pop into the Tortilleria next door for some hot, straight-off-the-grill tortillas to bring home with you.
Review Source:We used the recent living social. It's quintessential Durham. Looks like a dump from the outside and the neighborhood would probably scare off someone from Cary, but culinary pleasures in a quirky atmosphere await. My husband had the chile adobovado (I know I spelled that incorrectly) and I had the mole poblano enchiladas. Both were excellent. We started with the guacamole, which was divine but a tiny portion for the $5 price. Don't go expecting to fill up on free chips; this ain't that kinda place. The green salad accompanying my enchiladas was my favorite part of the whole experience. Lightly dressed with some cabbage mixed in. I ate every drop and took half of my enchiladas home. Really attentive service. We were the only customers at 5:30 on a Tuesday.
On the flip side, I'm not sure I'd drive back out here to pay full price for the meal. I think that reflects the fact that I live so close to Los Comales more than the quality of El Coyote.
My husband and I have been here twice and it has been awesome both times. This is a little gem of a restaurant on the outskirts of Durham. It isn't your typical Mexican place. The dishes are a little more elevated that your basic Mexican dish. The food taste super fresh and the guacamole is delicious! I highly recommend this place to anyone!
Review Source:This place is a hidden gem! Â It is awesome. Â We found it using Groupon Now and were not disappointed. Â The staff was so nice and helpful. Â The decor is great. Â It's small and cozy. Â The food is fantastic! Â Like the one reviewer said not your typical americanized Mexican rest. Â I had the chicken boudine which was amazing. Â The kids were so happy with all their food as well. Â My husband had the tacos de tingas and loved them! Â The prices are so reasonable which makes it even better! :-)
Review Source:We've visited El Coyote three times now and every time, the food has been excellent. Â The plating and flavors are like vising someone's home and they want you to come back. Â Sometimes the service is a little off, but I think this is in part related to the care going into the preparation of the dishes. Â The prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food. Â Don't really know how to describe the ambiance; at any rate, it's comfortable.
Review Source:This place is awesome! I am glad we decided to use the Groupon Now deal otherwise we may never have found it. It is very authentic and will not be like your typical americanized Mexican Restaurant experience. Staff is very nice and attentive and the food is awesome! Definitely go check it out, you wont be disappointed! The tacos de tingas are delicious, my husband got the Enchiladas Verdes which were also amazing!
