I've "racked" my brain to list all of the negatives of Eugene's and can't seem to find any. They're cheap, chill, with a great beer selection, service, and appetizer list.
My friends and I tried the tortilla chips with buffalo dip yesterday, and it was pretty much amazing. I mean, you can excuse my n00bishness for bar food, but I don't normally see this appetizer listed on many of the menus I've ordered from. Their Que Paso burger, I feel, is the best one on the list. And what's even better is the customization: feeling like losing weight and switching the meats you eat because you think they're correlated? Try the turkey burger version! want the delight of eating a burger without meat, and are determined to have the Red, White, Bleu version? Have a delicious veggie burger version! Are you American and like beef? No problem!
Lunch time menu for a ginormous burger and fries is $8.99. And to think, people go to that disgusting Chinese low-grade food place right next to it. They are doin' it wrong.
Also, I hear they have Trivia on Sunday nights? Pretty 'coo.
I hope the food gets better because I reallllyyyyy want to like this place. I almost ordered the steak tips but I noticed someone at the bar ordered them and it looked like they were sawing through wood. So, I ordered the turkey burger. It was great but the fries were really soggy and gross. I went with a group of people, everyone had gross sad limp fries. I didnt say anything  because I dont think the cook knows how to make fries. The beer menu is fab but they dont have much to offer in regards to traditional Irish alcohol. Our server was friendly and quick with our orders. I'll go back...but, with Dogwood around the corner, I hope they improve their food.
Review Source:I went here for the first time last night. It's a cozy little Irish pub and I would definitely come back (and try the food) but my friend and I had an interesting experience with the most apathetic bartender I've ever encountered.
First, this bartender was attentive throughout the night, that wasn't the issue.
But when we first ordered drinks, my friend got a black velvet and I got a jack d'or.
When the bartender brought them, she went to give us each the opposite drink, and we just laughed but corrected her and she apologized (not a big deal in any way, but relevant to the story).
So a little while later my friend has ordered another beer and then I order another beer. The bartender brings me a black velvet (what my friend ordered the first time) and I look over and realize that when she served my friend her second drink she'd given her a Jack D'or (my first drink). My friend likes both so hadn't said anything, but we (in visible sight of the waitress) switched drinks so we could each have the beer we actually wanted/ordered.
Finally it gets hilarious, because when we ordered a third round, the bartender just brought us two black velvets. What? At no time in the night did we order the same drink. It was like she'd forgotten whatever the other beer was we'd at some point ordered and so just brought two of the one she knew someone was drinking.
Anyway no harm done, it's St. Paddy's Day Weekend and we should all drink a little Guiness I suppose.
This place won me over completely for the following scenario:
I ordered a cheeseburger. The burger itself was a meal, not just a skimpy little sandwich, but also not redonkulously big. I ordered it medium rare. I bit into the burger and almost burned myself, because it was bursting with juice. Deeeeeelicious.
Other than that, this place is also really comfortable. Nice, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff is chatty and friendly. Many much beers are available. And the fried pickle appetizer is noteworthy as well.
That's about it. Good stuff!
I went there for my birthday in October with my kids. We had steak tips, a burger and chicken. It was a midweek night. The food was horrible, sour tasting, like old meat. Buffalo wings had no hot sauce. Beer was good. I told the owner some time later and he went on about the best chef, where he worked , etc. It does not matter. The food tasted sour. Steak tips, chicken and burgers are basic bar food that should be easy to do and at least taste ok. NOT HERE-
I went back today and had the steak tips to give them a 2nd chance- The tips were at least not sour, but bland . The french fries were mcdonalds fries boiled in the steak tips juice. The alleged beans were carrots and cucumbers dropped in the same steak sauce and heated for a minute or too. - no salad or soup comes with dinner-
not going back for dinner, maybe beers but only beers in good weather-
their sister bar , napper tandy's, in rossie square has good bar and good bar food, not dinner entree type, , food.and beer
but jp, oneils, done with it- bad food- good beer- nice looking beer bari eat out every night in jp, west rox, rossie- so i have seen a lot of places-
this place as far as food goes needs huge improvement
the beer and atmosphere are pretty good
From the outside this place seems like a dive bar. From the inside, it's anything but that. Came here to watch a game on a Friday night and got a table with minimal effort. The beer selection was nice and the food didn't disappoint. Shared an appetizer sampler with my friend and the portions were hearty. I live close by and may have to make this my regular Celtics game watch location.
Review Source:I subscribe to the Publick House's philosophy: eat good food, drink better beer (though I do tend to eat great food). Eugene O'Neill's is great addition to the scene at Forest Hills. they have a better beer list than my local favorite, Dogwoods. They have good food, too, and friendly service. And they just passed my test: last week, I sat down and watched as my friendly waitress stared at the taps along the bar and read them off in order, stopping to remember a few. I made a suggestion: print out your beer list. This week, I sat down and had a list of beers not only on paper, but also on the wall. I am angling for this place to thrive.
The comments below about loud (country) music are no longer true. Nice vibe, brick walls, candles, and for those weeknights when I have to crank out one last document, this pub has free wifi to send it off to the team. Coffice denizens take note: it is a pub where one could work.
Looking forward to this place developing a similar community to Dogwoods, and really appreciate having a rotating list of good craft brew on draft and on tap (I count 20 taps).
Great food, service, beer list, location. Â The only downside is the music. Â It is always way too loud and seems to be catered more toward the bartender than the crowd. Â I have been there five times and always with friends... Â it is almost impossible to have a conversation. Â Several other people have also noted this in the reviews. Â Hopeully they will rectify this as I love everything else about the place.
Review Source:My new favorite place! Walked in and got a table on a Friday night ~ 7ish. Moderately crowded but a few open tables. I thought the beer selection was great with the standard domestic choices supplemented by local microbrews and the OUTSTANDING Shipyard Seasonal rimmed in caramel - pure heaven.
The menu was sufficiently varied pizza, apps, burgers, interesting salads, pasta and reasonable prices. Had a fabulous fish sandwich with a great portion size. Liked the coleslaw too.
My only complaint is the ceiling heater seemed to be blowing right on us, so I was on and off with my sweater. Â I was o.k. with the music selection, but it got real loud as the evening wore on. Why must a patron leave with a sore throat from shouting?
Finally, I was a little surprised the place cleared out so early, but perhaps it's more of an afterwork/family crowd which is fine with me. As long as I can walk in and get a table - this place will be on the top of my list - surpassing some of the more upscale, overpriced chi-chi wanna be local spots. Give me a cozy, brick-walled pub with reasonably priced food, beer and wine and I'm sold.
Q for U: What has two hands, lives in Jamaica Plain and likes to drink beer?
A for U: Me
Q for U: What has a door, a bar, tables & chairs, beer & pub food?
A for U: Eugene O'neill's
Eugene O'neill's, it's a bar. It's in Jamaica Plain near Forest Hills. Actually, quite literally spitting distance from Forest Hills. It has all sorts of potential to become a regular local haunt, and by the very fact that it is a drinking establishment, has already assembled a rag-tag cast of regular characters. How would I know that without being a regular, you ask? And Good Sir or Madam, I say to you, I have a sixth sense for barflys. You know what else I have a sixth sense for? Places that seem like they will probably become a regular watering hole on my local watering hole rotation that aren't quite there yet. There's just something that hasn't clicked for me yet at Eugene's. It might be the sort of 'out of the box, Boston Irish pub, throw some stuff on the walls make it look old-timey, still has the new bar smell' thing. I dunno.
Q for U: What has a few dollars in it's pocket and an itchin' for a good dank beer?
A for U: Me
Q for U: What has an alcoholic beverage in a glass that is not exactly there waiting for me but that I might go and enjoy anyway?
A for U: Eugene O'neill's
Visited on a Friday night at about 6:00. Â Plenty of room for our party of 6 to be seated at a table when we arrived. Â When we left at around 7:30 the tables were all full. Â
This places reminds me of the Porter Cafe in West Roxbury (except it's larger), with a little bit of the Dogwood mixed in. Â Kind of dark and homey with exposed brick walls. Â The menu is more casual than the Porter (not many entrees and lots of pizza and burgers.) Â The apps we had were very good, especially the onion rings, which were home-made with large juicy onions. Â The nachos were large, but needed more toppings. Â (When will places realize that you can't pile the chips "way high" and cover them with cheese without having all the chips in the middle be naked?)
The pizza was good but not fantastic. Â They have a good selection of different pizzas or you can design your own. Â The service was friendly and efficient.
They have about 8 beers on tap and just an OK wine selection. Â My wife had a watermelon cocktail that she said was delicious. Â
The crowd was very much neighborhood families. Â We brought 2 kids and the table behind us had several kids as well. Â The people sitting at the bar were mainly young couples. Â
The music was a bit too loud when we arrived, but faded into the background as the night wore on. Â They have several large TVs (one in each corner) that fight for your attention, even though the sound was off and it was just re-runs of golf.
This place is a good addition to the neighborhood and one that I hope to visit again very soon.
I have been here several times since the opening. The food is great, the beer selection is up to my standards-and if you like Shipyard Pumpkinhead, and who doesn't?, they have the best caramel rim in all the land. If you get one, you will never be happy with any other rim, ever. Â The Irish bartender, John I think, is so nice, efficient, and personable...unlike his younger snooty ginger counterpart! She ruins this place! I had to wait 20 mins for her to order my food after begging for a drink. It was dead in there. She was just very busy...chatting with the server. The next time I went in there, she played favorites at the bar...I, apparently, wasn't one of her favorites! She is rude, inattentive, and needs to reign in the power trip a bit.
In short, this place is the perfect addition to Forest Hills, but I'll need to find out when the redhead isn't working before I consider going back.
* Update: The beer list really, really rocks now with a mix of local and craft beers. Music got better too!! 5 stars. Great local little pub.
Ok, I've checked this place out a bunch of times considering it's in my backyard. Basically, it's frickin' awesome...though I have some reservations.
1. Seriously excited about another addition to this part of JP!!!
2. Wonderful service! Everyone is friendly and inviting. Good after work destination.
3. Very comfortable. Red brick. Soccer games too! BIG, big plus there.
3. Great fries! No joke. Hand cut. Very quality. Real good fried fish.
4. Dapper burger I think? Avocado, bacon, cheddar. Awesome! Great flavor.
5. (Beer list. Ehhhh. Okay. I really would like more variety, but I like my beer. They could arguably do a lot more here.)
6. Turkey burger: almost too salty to be edible. In fact, I don't think I even finished.
7. Sadly, all the other food I've tried seems too sweet: the pizza sauce, the chili on the nachos. I think there's sugar or something?? I wish they would change this.
8. (The music, real boring. Play some local stuff or have more of a Bukowski or Deep Ellum feel. I'll suck it up though.)
So, all in all. Very, very good. I am excited.
(Also, good bye Tonic you fucking pricks. They were rude to people who didn't nicely fit their target clientele and they deserve their belly up in my opinion.)
great addition to the neighborhood!  Went with a group of 6 first time we were there and tried the mile high nachos and a number of the burgers as well as a pizza.  Nachos were very good - huge portion and toppings were fresh.  Pizza was good - nothing too remarkable about it - different from the thin cracker crust of Dogwood Cafe  2 doors down.  The burgers were the standout - great beefy flavor and they nailed the temperature on each burger from mid-rare to well.  Fries were hand cut and the cole slaw was excellent, fresh and house-made - surprised how good it was actually.  Service was good too.  Beer list was solid but not exciting.  we've been back a couple of times since and quality was consistent with the first visit - really glad to see a nice new addition to the neighborhood - now if Tonic could get its act together we'd have the beginnings of a good restaurant row in Forrest Hills.
Review Source:The missing apostrophe aside, Eugene O'Neills [sic] has a lot to offer. Good beer selection with plenty of seasonal taps, tasty food (including fried pickles--huzah!), and very friendly bartenders who clearly know beer and don't mind chatting.
My experience with the food has been a little uneven--the pizza I ate on my first visit was fantastic, but my burger the next time was on the messy side (including avocado chunks that would never stay still on a burger/sandwich) and more medium rare than medium.
Went into Eugene O'Neills last night for a beer and although I wasn't completely impressed I think this place has lots of great potential. Â
The good:
* The interior design is great! I am a sucker for exposed brick walls
* The bar tender was really nice and attentive.
* Cocktail list looks like they offer some delicious drinks
The so so:
* Beer list just okay. Â I much prefer the beer selections at the Gate or Behan.
* The food (full disclosure I didn't eat) as to be expected is pub fare with a decent selection of burgers, pizza, etc. I would have preferred 1 or 2 lighter options.
