We've gone to this location countless times over the past decade, starting with the Barn Tavern, and have to say the Farm is a great fit. Authentic barbecue, tasty appetizers, and lively bar out back.
We've sat in both the deck/bar out back and in the dining areas, both had good service and atmosphere. We've enjoyed the fried pickles as appetizers. The kids chicken fingers are to die for - absolutely something an adult would eat as an entree - fresh, crispy, and delicious. Happy hour specials during the week are a great deal.
There were two things that kept me from giving a five star review - we were going there Friday night and wanted to do a reservation. My mother called and was told early in the day they didn't take reservations, but she would have a table for 6 ready for us. When we arrived at 6, the hostess was abrupt, saying "I'm not sure why anyone would have told your we'd have a table ready..." type deal. If you don't take reservations just say that, and NEVER argue with a customer. We left and went elsewhere.
The other negative was they claim to have "gourmet" flatbread pizzas. after ordering them, they are tortillas with toppings, they were soggy, and certainly not up to pizza standards. Either do a real pizza or get it off the menu.
Went here for Father's Day this past weekend, and it wasn't as great as our experience out another Farm location. Parking lot is terrible, however the location itself is awesome, right on the river.
We tried the sampler which was alright, however I had 2 mozzarella bites, that had no mozzarella. Then my brother, dad and I all got burgers. My brother likes them like charcoal, and got it medium well, my dad medium, and mine medium rare. All three of the burgers were well over well done. Even my brother thought so.
Outstanding Meals and Drinks. My wife and I have been here a couple times and we went as a family to celebrate Father's Day early. We had Laura as our waitress and she seemed a bit passive and not confident as a server. I wasn't sure what the specials were as we were never told. We really love this place and hope that with some of the negative reviews that management works on some of the "small" or not so small things that could put this place in the 5-star catagory.
Review Source:Cool ambiance, good wait staff, decent beer but only place I have been to in New England with cask beer and delicious food. I had a burger that was delicious and came with boardwalk style fries, my favorite, my father had the fish tacos, which were good but could have had a bit more spice, and the seared tuna appetizer was delicious. This place is a hidden gem, fantastic.
Review Source:Didn't like the parking lot. Only a few spots by the building. The rest was a good distance away and quite dark.
Once we found a place to park and got inside we were seated very quickly. I loved the menu and saw many items I was interested in trying. My wife wasn't as happy.
We started with fried pickles. I loved them. Wife hated them. For dinner I had the BBQ plate. It came with steak tips, ribs, pulled pork, chicken, mashed potatoes and a salad. Loved my dinner except for the salad. Just not a fan of fancy greens that remind me of lawn clippings. I'm happiest with iceberg and romaine lettuce. My wife decided to just go lite and got a side of Mac and cheese. It was kind of bland.
For me, there was only two things I didn't like. #1 I wish they had corn bread. BBQ just isn't the same without it. #2 we wish there was some kind of warning about there not being refills on soda. We each had 3 cokes and paid $13.50 just in soda.
Even though there was other things I really wanted to try, I can't say I'm going to be going back.
we are on our way to north conway but we are hungry. my friend whos driving suggests to go somewhere crappy as usual so i yelped it. the farm bar and grille is the one that looks more appetizing.
the location is very nice. i took a couple of pictures and uploaded them, if you care to look. if you dont, its cool. so we came in and a hostess took us to our table, unfortunately there was no available spots on the deck. thats a nice spot during the warmer months because me being from miami, i dont know how you motherfuckers do it. i wanted to get that off my chest. respect.
i went for the pulled pork sandwich and a sam adams. my friend got a salad cause he says hes eating healthy, but he also got a lime bud light? Â they brought some corn bread for the table to nibble on. that was good. did not stand a chance.
the pulled pork sandwich was awesome. tender meat, good sauce, large portion. i dont remember the presentation or garnish because i ate it that fast. got to peak at other peoples plates. everything looked awesome.
our waitress was ok, not overly friendly but not dry as a wall. although they were busy, the kitchen did a good job as our food didnt take much to come out. my friend the healthy one of course chugged his lame lime beer and got another one.
We went for lunch on a Wednesday, arriving a little after 11AM. The place just opened so it was pretty empty and we were able to choose our table out on the deck. The view was fantastic!!
The waitress was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. We had the pulled pork nachos as an appetizer. They were amazing! The "personal" size was absolutely enough for 2 people to split.
I had the chicken quesadilla, which was delicious, however I was expecting more BBQ sauce inside the quesadilla rather than the small amount poured over the top. Nevertheless I was very satisfied with all of the food.
Overall, a fantastic restaurant. I'll certainly be back, several times.
went on Wednesday night this summer and the place was packed - mexican night - with $5 margarita's.... which were fabulous. Â Had the Pulled Pork Nacho's and they were absolutely amazing - really the best nachos I have ever had... should have only ordered that. Â Also enjoyed a seasonal salad which was very fresh - appeared really small - but it was the perfect before dinner salad. Â Entree was fish tacos and they were delicious - fish was lightly battered, guacamole was superb. Â Everyone else at the party raved about their dishes - steak tips, half a chicken and a pulled pork sandwich. Â Service was great.... the only reason why I didn't give them a 5 is because of the FLY that was buzzing around our table all night long! Â
Oh yeah .... awesome corn bread - not an easily mastered starch!
Great food, great service, great prices!!! I go here probably 5 times a month, and it's my favorite go-to restaurant and bar in Dover. Their weekly deals are great (25 cent wing night, anyone? $10 all-you-can-eat fish&chips?) and their servers are always friendly. Their huge deck is awesome in the summer; it overlooks the Cocheco river, and they have a big screen tv that they put outside for games and whatnot. Highly recommended!
Review Source:I'm just back from my first visit to the barn. I managed to waddle my way to the computer and squeeze into my chair.
That pulled pork sandwich was bigger than I expected, and a huge side of fries were almost more than I could finish for lunch.
The Barn Bar & Grill is a little off the street, and easy to miss, but I consider it very worth the effort. Â It's my understanding that it is under new management, and has been reopened only a few months now.
I usually wait til I visit a few times before writing a review, but I was very impressed with it. Â Service was fast and friendly, portions were more than fair for the price, and the BBQ is the best I've found in Dover so far. Â The sauce is vinegar based with just enough zing in it. I do prefer tomato-based when it comes to BBQ, but it won't stop me from trying it dinner one of these nights.
There are a few dining rooms, including one that overlooks the river, where you can see the big BBQ grill, and a well-worn path in the snow leading back and forth to the restaurant.
It was a pretty quiet lunch for a grey winter afternoon, with about a dozen people in the bar area, but I imagine it gets very busy in the evenings.
I'll be back!
I went to the Farm for the first time to get together with a girlfriend for lunch. Â While my waitress seemed to be unfamiliar with the cocktail and food menu, regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed my veggie burger. Â They make it from scratch similar to the ones I've had from the Portsmouth Brewery and the River House in downtown Portsmouth. Â The Farm promotes it by saying that it's not a burger trying to taste like a burger. Â It truly is hearty made with grains, carrots and other yummy veggies in a nicely grilled patty.
The ambiance is great, and there are various rooms which provide a selection of ambiance whether or not you're on a date and you want a quiet corner, or the outdoor bar area with flat screen tv to watch the games. Â
The selection of beers are great and they offer organic wine selections, too. Â My ultimate probably would be the creative drink titles that range from the "Purple draank" to the "Capri Sun".
The one last piece of advice that I have, you will be very disappointed if you are expecting fresh calamari. Â While I was told that it was fresh, it completely tasted like it was frozen and was just flash-fried. Â It was served with cherry peppers, which I love but the un-fresh calamari didn't quite make the grade.
I will, however, keep coming back because the atmosphere is great and the food is so-so.
I recently went to The Farm Bar & Grille and I must say it was fantastic. I went on a date and was expecting a decent meal, but nothing much more. I was wrong. From the time we walked in the doors everyone was friendly, courteous and polite. We sat inside, although there is an awesome deck over looking the river, because it was cold outside.
Our waitress was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the food their. I am an admitted beer snob of sorts and was looking at the different beers and came across Longtrail Double Bag on tap... Something you don't see everyday and since I hadn't had the beer in while I asked for a description. She wasn't quite sure but made it a point to find out for me and then even made sure I wanted to finish it after ordering it.
Now onto the food. Some of the BEST BBQ'd steak tips I've had in a long time they were juicy and had just the right amount of seasoning. Not to mention an above average side salad and homemade, delectable cornbread. My date had an alfredo pasta that she loved. The portions were generous and we both left stuffed and satisfied. I would love to go back at sunset and watch it over the river.
First off, I loved the menu and the location and had high hopes. Our first visit here and they had trouble executing. Long wait at the reception desk before the hostess appeared, took a while to get a menu because they had run out, long wait for dinner salads but entrees arrived about 10 seconds after the salads. Our server was new, but she was very friendly and attentive. My wife had broiled salmon and it was very fishy and very heavily salted - she sent it back, but by this time we had been there so long she just wanted something quick so we could eat together, so she ordered some chili. The chili was very tasty. I ordered the rib-eye medium-well. When it arrived I it had a lot of black on it and I was afraid they had cooked it to well-done, but when I cut into it much of the inside was medium-rare. Good flavor though.
I'm guessing they are still having some growing pains and we will be returning to give it another try. There were at least a dozen things on the menu that sounded awesome and I would like to try. Hopefully I'll be able to update my review to a better rating.
I'm upgrading the Farm by a star. Â The food is still ok... not amazing, but not bad either. Â I had a lobster roll at a company outing there a few nights ago and the roll was too big to finish, and it wasn't drowning in mayo either... it was pretty much pure lobster, which was great.
The reason I'm upgrading isn't the lobster roll, or any of the other food, but rather the management. Â We came in with a large party and wanted deck seating. Â They were straight up about their policy of not taking reservations, which I don't personally understand, but it's their policy and that's just how it is. Â Despite this, they tried very hard to accomodate us, they gave us consistent updates as to the status of our seating, and they allowed us to take up tables in the bar that would normally go to a server in order to give us a place to hang while we waited for said seating. Â I felt that they really did a great job trying to make things work for us, while at the same time staying within the boundaries of their policies. Â Granted, they made some decent money off of us that night, but some restaurants have a "take it or leave it" attitude, and the Farm does not. Â Nice work by the server, bartenders, and manager (owner?) on duty that night. Â Our crew had a great time, and we would not be shy about coming in for a large outing again.
The outdoor seating was a nice plus... but the smoke from the meat smoker was blowing directly at us all night, kinda ruined the outdoor enjoyment. Next time I would prefer to sit in the enclosed porch area.
We started with the spinach and artichoke dip, which was good but they little triangular pita pieces were useless for getting the dip out of the bowl. We didnt have utensils at that point either, which made it double frustrating. Â
BBQ plate was good overall, but they were out of baked potatos (?) so I chose the mashed instead. I wasnt very impressed with the mashed since they were pretty dry and flavorless. Steak tips rocked! Cooked medium rare (perfectly) and very tender. Pulled pork was stellar as well, but the chicken was a bit on the dry side. The house BBQ sauce was spread over all 3 meats, but had good flavor.
The lobster roll was huge and more like an open faced sandwich. It was all lobster meat and very little mayo with some celery mixed in and lettuce on the bed of the roll. It came with french fries which were a big hit as well.
I'd come back again, but probably sit inside. They had some decent Happy hour drink prices ($2.50 any draft and .99 PBRs with 50% off apps) and some special food nights like .35 wings on Thurs.
UPDATE: WTF happened to the Lobster Roll? They put dill and other seasoning into the lobster/mayo/celery mix. Horrible! Go back to the old way of just big chunks of lobster meat, a little mayo and some celery. Simple and classic, dont mess with perfection!
I'd love to give the Farm 4 stars for the great food & outdoor dining but our service was so lackluster I can only give them 3.
We went for dinner on a Saturday night, no wait for the screened in porch. The atmosphere is fun, though at the time it was skewing towards an older crowd. We sat with the menus closed for almost 20 minutes before our waitress came over. Our 2 beers took far too long, not to mention our entrees. We waited almost 1 hour for 2 chicken sandwiches, while we saw plate after plate of ribs be served to guests that arrived after us. The server, Amanda, never acknowledged the wait for the drinks, food, or check. Once the food came out she asked us if we were "good?"
There are no doubt better servers at this restaurant, so definitely check it out for some BBQ, sandwiches, and fun drinks. It's the best outdoor dining spot in Dover.
We visited the Farm on a Wednesday for lunch and took advantage of the outdoor seating looking over the Cocheco. A darkish interior opened up to a beautiful semi-outdoor bar and then a completely open deck. We were initially stunned by the great specials that were available starting at 3pm on a daily basis, save for Friday and Saturday. The Farm takes pride in the freshness and in-house preparation most of (or all) of their food items (house made sour and bloody mary mix).
Our appetizers were okay. We got fried pickles, mozzarella balls, and shrimp. The batter on the pickles and shrimp were a little underwhelming. but the dipping sauces were all creative and . Our meal delivery was well-timed and our waitress was attentive and friendly with offers for more drinks.
For dinner I got a burger, which was cooked a little past medium-well, but remained incredibly juicy. Others got a well dressed salad and a veggie burger. Everyone at the table seemed pleased with their food, except for an order of ribs, which missed the mark a bit. Namely, the preparation did not remove the leathery membrane on the underside of the ribs, which makes the ribs easier to eat and allows the meat to tenderize all the way through.
Overall, I think that The Farm will be a staple in our eating out schedule this summer. Check them out for their specials and other deals.
I hope to update this review soon with a better star rating. Â However, at this time I can't give The Farm more than two stars. Â They've only been open for a week and they were slamming busy, and I take these things into account. Â The Farm occupies what used to be The Barn Tavern. Â They've renovated the back deck with a huge bar area, which is open and fun. Â Decent draught collection including Longtrail Double Bag, my favorite. Â Menu is mostly BBQ fare and bar food like wings chili, chowder etc. The Farm has a much more youthful vibe than the Barn had, though I miss The Barn's fine dining options. Â I had the pulled pork burrito and was disappointed when it arrived cold. Â They were out of a few beer selections, and the server was slow with beer refills. Â This place will undoubtedly suck in the college crowd, but the food is uninspired. Â I'll try it again on a night that isn't so busy so i can get a real feel for it. Â Parking may be an issue on busy nights, and seating is crowded.
Review Source:The Farm is now in Dover??? This is great news!!!!
I absolutely L-O-V-E this new location!! Â It is in this historical barn that they re-vamped and made their own, and when you walk in you can still see the carved pigs everywhere.
The menu is the same for the Essex, MA location as well, which changes each season. Â I'm happy that they added new vegetarian items-- their veggie burgers and fettucini alfredo dishes are my favorite!! Â I was very impressed by the timeliness that the food came out, and I experienced great service from our waitress as well. Â
It looks like they have a patio set up and ready to go, all we need right now is some sunshine so that we can sit out there! Â They have an even bigger outdoor smoker here, and it is right out back by some river. Â They're well known for their meats that come off of the smoker, ranging from pulled pork, ribs, etc. Â I really like some of the new drink menu items as well, and they still have my favorite POP-ROCK martini!!
If you are nearby in NH, I would say definitely stop by because this is going to be a gem. Â It is not on a main road, but rather behind another building...but mosey on down to get a great meal and relax!! Â It is great for families as well, and one of the bartenders mentioned that they might be putting a volleyball court in the backyard as well which is great for kids.
Where will they be opening next????
