I have been to Fuel a few times over the past couple of years, but it was my most recent dining experience there that made me want to write a review. The food is always amazing and the service is never less than fantastic, but they really out did themselves this past weekend.

A friend and I went for dinner, without a reservation, during 5280 on a Saturday. The fact that we were even able to get in at all was amazing, but they graciously found us a table. I'm always a little leery of 5280 dining, because it usually leaves the staff feeling overwhelmed, under appreciated and grumpy, and the food is usually underwhelming from having to be mass produced to accommodate all of the reservations. I can happily say, we had quite the opposite experience. Our waitress at Fuel was lovely and helpful with all of our questions about the food and the wine list, and the food was no less than their usual standard of excellence.

The best part: I recently went vegan and they did a special menu just for me! I know, I know I sound like one of those annoying/crazy diners, and I definitely felt self-conscious, but they went out of their way to create it and to make sure that I knew it was no bother at all. And it was delicious! Totally blew me away-especially the blood orange/pomegranate sorbet for dessert. Unreal.

At the end of the evening we not only got a complimentary shot of house-made lemoncello, but the owner stopped by to talk to us about our experience and give us some background on his food/restaurant philosophy.

I would have been back regardless of whether or not they could accommodate me as a new vegan or any of the other wonderful treats we experienced that night, but it really sealed Fuel as a Denver staple for me.

I have eaten at Fuel, at least 50 times and the food is consistent, fresh and delicious.
I bring clients for lunch all the time, and they always love it.  The soups at lunch are a standout, and their fried chicken special, is the best in Denver.
    Great staff too.

Am I allowed to say "OMFG!" on Yelp?  Well, OMFG!!!

First time at Fuel last night.  Had their DRW menu, which was actually their entire February menu (apparently they change the menu every month).  Loved EVERYTHING!  The burrata, the Tchoupitoulas, the steak, the chicken, and of course the chocolate caramel tart.  Great service, sexy ambiance, diverse wine list - Fuel Cafe has it all!  We're coming back every month to try their new menus!  You should, too!

I like Fuel. No, I adore Fuel. I think the food is complex, yet straightforward. I'm not a meat eater, with the exception of fish, so the menu options have been limited the 10 or so times I've dined there for dinner. No matter what, the vegetarian and seafood options are absolutely wonderful. I love the chef/owner. He is very excited about the food, including pastries. Service is great and it has a wonderful vibe, whether it's for brunch, lunch or dinner. To be completely honest, I'm not so impressed with Denver's restaurants--it's a scene more than anything. Fuel has one of the top five best "menus that actually delivers" in my opinion.

Fuel had been on my to-try list for a while - after weeks of scheduling and rescheduling I finally got the chance to meet a girlfriend there for brunch last week.

Short version: I'll definitely be returning.

Long version: What a totally cute and charming place! If my brunch buddy didn't live at the lofts right by Fuel, I probably wouldn't have ever run across it.

We sat near the bar at four-top that looked outside on to the patio. It was a gorgeous day so it was cool to see other diners (and one unbelievably cute puppy) enjoying the nice weather.

My friend and I started with the scones - they were delish, albeit a *little* dry - I know, scones can get that way sometimes. The lemon curd and other jam (fig? Apple? I don't recall) was wonderful too and helped add a little something to the scones.

For an entrée I  went with the fried chicken biscuit. One of the best brunch items I have EVER had. Buttermilk fried chicken breast with a cheddar scallion biscuit, Fuel pickles, mustard gastrique and home fries. Spend the extra $2 and add the bacon and eggs on top. This, my friends, was the perfect combination of salty, savory and sweet, as well as the ideal blend of soft and crunchy textures.

The cocktails? Yeah, I'd go back for those as well. I went with the Puesta Del Sol, concerned it may be a little too sweet, but much to my delight it was super refreshing.

My only suggestion to Fuel: Bring back the apple fritter! I saw it on an older menu and was bummed it wasn't part of the current brunch offerings. Other than that, solid food and establishment - you'll see this gorgeous mug there again :)

I'm a huge fan of Fuel. I work in this complex, so it's a great lunch choice for business meetings or even lunch with friends. I've only been here a handful of times, but I've been impressed every time.

The food is always fantastic. They don't have a huge selection, but there's always one item with something you like. The prices are relatively reasonable for the area and the style of food, so it's kind of a treat for me to eat here.

While it's hit or miss if your server is awesome or not, they're generally friendly and prompt.

If you come during a lunch service, you can expect to wait, but come a little before or a little after and you should be fine.

In the summer/nicer months, they have a great patio and it's really enjoyable to come sit and hang out. I'll be back soon, no doubt.

Small'er restaurant that really delivers on quality and atmosphere! It is in an 'out of the way' location in a more industrial area of Denver that is up-&-coming with condos and urban facilities... and WELL worth the search. The ingredients were fresh. Recipes were not complicated, and delivered lots of bright flavors. I look forward to going back soon!

Top shelf espresso. Their regular roast is slightly acidic but not so much that you need a glass of water. You can tell that everyone working in the shop wants it to succeed. They're enthusiastic and unique.

Very interesting space, and good food.  Service pretty slow when we were there.  Gets crowded at lunchtime, when they don't take reservations.  One bonus is that thanks to the high ceilings most of Fuel is pretty  quiet, good for conversation.

I went here on a Thursday night. The place is impossible to find-- it is is a neat area that I hadn't been to before, and it is tucked back within a larger building. The sign on the street was dimly lit (drove past it a few times before I saw it), and then you have to navigate back behind into another area. In any case, the place was EMPTY at 6:30pm... we had a reservation and I felt sort of silly since we were literally the only ones it there. It ended up filling up later-- it must attract a later crowd than me and my friends! The atmosphere was fun on the funky side and fairly casual-- a plus to me. Interesting light fixtures.

The service was excellent. Our waitress was really knowledgeable about the menu and super friendly- not at all pretentious. When she suggested a drink that they were then unable to make b/c they were out of a key ingredient, she had the bartender make me a custom drink (which was really good) and was sincerely interested in making sure that I enjoyed it (I did).

My entree (roasted root vegetables over polenta) was just okay. The polenta wasn't anything special. The veggies were good, but again, nothing to wow me. The best part of the meal was dessert. We got a molten chocolate cake with smoked vanilla ice cream. The smoked ice cream was amazing-- I imagine they put liquid smoke (hickory) in it, or smoked the vanilla beans or something like that. It was interesting and surprisingly tasty. The molten cake was delicious too.

I really enjoyed this hidden gem! The atmosphere was very hip. We had the Cubans sandwich with there spaghetti squash salad. This was a perfect lunch combo. It was not very heavy but very filling. As a starter we tried the hummus. This was very good. The cheee really mad it different from any other hummus I have had. It was more like a creamy spread. Pork tacos was very good also. Sowed cooked and shredded if you are not to spontaneous to try something new. This a good fall back meal.

Don't you love Hidden Gems?  Located in a old Denver Taxi Station, you wouldn't know this place existed!

I went for my bf's birthday and didn't know what to expect, hopefully a decent meal.  Definitely got more than I bargained for!

--Menu changes every month + it's farm to restaurant. Very fresh!

--Unique dishes! Steak + Bone Marrow? Fish Cheeks? Definitely have to be a bit adventurous going here!

--Dessert!! I had Baked Alaska (first time ever)! YUM!!

--Great cocktail selection and wine list.

--Ambiance is intimate, unique, and trendy!

Fuel Cafe is an add to your "Try something new" Restaurant List!

Fuel Cafe is and intriguing restaurant.  It's location is mysterious and out of the way which gives it a noir feel as you approach along Ringsby Ct.  Even the Fuel sign is a little difficult to find on the side of the building.  Lighting was definitely dim.  Once we were in the Fuel Cafe, however, things livened up.  The service was fine, but the food was fantastic.  My skirt steak was flavorful and perfectly prepared.  My wife's pork entree was incredibly tender and delicious.  We want to go again and try some other offerings as everything being served to tables around us looked great.  The only negative note was that we weren't credited for our happy hour drink deductions on our bill, and I failed to notice it until we got home :(

OMG Becky! This place is the bomb! Great ambiance - it's in the old Denver Taxi space.  We went for a Friday night dinner, party of 4.  Arrived about 8:30 and the small dining room was full.  The cocktails were outstanding - best Old Fashioned I have ever had. And  I am an aficionado.  True story.
We shared the Boar Shank Stuffed Squid (not a fan - i don't recommend) and the Bruleed Goat Cheese (this was SO GOOD that I wanted to take the plate and eat it all by myself in the corner).
Dinner was THE BEST Pork Osso Bucco I have ever placed in my mouth.  The pork was perfectly cooked and so tender that it fell off the shank and onto my fork.  Paired with fresh and tasty little brussel sprouts.  So good. (so good 2 of us ate the same thing).
One dining partner had the stuffed squash which was outstanding as well. I don't understand how this Chef made a squash taste like nirvana but he did it so BRAVO and you need try it!
The server sold the Puppy Fish dish as a sort of New Orleans inspired dish but it wasn't. Tasted more like an homage to Indian curry fish.  It was the least fave of the group.
The service at the start of the meal was below par - our server was definitely hurried and not excited about giving us info on the menu - BIG NO NO with my dining companions.  However, the server improved the later the night got.  I will attribute the not-so-awesome service to just being slammed at the peak dining hours.
Bottom line - GET OFF THE BEATEN PATH AND GET TO FUEL.  IT IS DELICIOUS.

Finally visited Fuel after many months of waiting for the right night to arrive. Well, let's just say, it does not live up to the hype (unless you enjoy garage dining amongst cinder block walls). Furthermore, if you are going to force me to drive out of the way into an unknown area, you better have something exceptional - like service for instance.

Food was ok, not bad, not great. However, out waitress basically ignored us once the larger tables rolled in. Unfortunately, I eat out nearly EVERY meal (and have been doing so for over 14 years), so --- I expect certain things to arrive in a timely fashion without begging (such as water and the check). Our reservation was 5:45 pm Sat night, much earlier than normal for us. We arrived exactly on time. The table wasn't ready and the hostess rudely told us "Wait" when we "mistakenly" followed her. She also turned out to be our less than delightful waitress. Oh the joys of being ignored. One thing a CANNOT stand is rude service, no matter how good the food may or may not be. Another thing I hate is false hype. Usually that occurs when somebody goes into great detail to explain ingredients and/or dishes which are pretty obvious if you can actually read (like butternut squash). She explained nothing of interest, but ignored me completely while paying attention to everybody around us.

The restaurant resides in the warehouse/trainyard district so needless to say it's less than glamorous. The menu is WAY too scarce (5 entrees - maybe 8 appetizers and about 3 deserts). Unfortunately, despite decent food, the prices are expensive (comparable to Fruition, etc) without coming close to the scale of ambiance nor service.

The pork is ok - not terrible but not my favorite dish. The bread was very good, it's very fresh served with a very nice virgin olive oil and great baslamic vinegar. However, that needed to be asked for. Also - for some reason - our waitress forgot to inform us about the specials and COMPLETELY neglected me despite literally being right next to our table. Also - she RUDLEY placed a water decanter on OUR TABLE WHILE WE WERE EATING, but one big problem - the water was for an adjacent table. She also managed to hold us hostage while I asked her for the check like 3 times because we were late for a show. Oh well. My squash was excellent but the combo with a wild mushroom risotto was a bit heavy and the duxelle overpowered the squash so much that you couldn't taste the squash until you scooped out the mushroom mixture, which defeats the purpose.

The baked alaska was excellent, except they insisted upon forgetting spoons so we were forced to eat ice cream with forks - laughable.

It's VERY loud (I couldn't even hear my girlfriend) because it's wall to wall concrete with zero acoustical improvements.

Last but not least, the waitress saw us leaving and didn't even bother to say goodbye or thank you or anything. We are a young, professional couple who dress very well whenever we go out so I have no idea why they'd choose to ignore us or any paying guest for that matter.

...meh.  The waitstaff isn't super friendly, the menu is small (however it's all locally grown and seasonal so I can't really bitch too much), and it feels a smidge like you're in a place in LoDo and not the Taxi community.  I'd try it again....but it wouldn't be my idea to go there.

Yes the location is a bit off the beaten path but it's worth the effort.  Why is it worth the effort you ask ... well a few reasons.

    1.  The menu changes every month so if you're not seeing anything that jumps out to you ... wait a few weeks and it will change.

    2.  The ambiance is unique.  It's on an old taxi building so it has some old time charm to it.

    3.  They are environmentally friendly.  The mantra Organic, Seasonal, Local and Sustainable is shown in the menu and quality of food that is served.

    4.  The service was phenomenal.  We were seated quickly and the server was knowledge about the menu and offered solid suggestions.  Could not have been happier with the service.

If you have not been to Fuel do yourself a favor and check it out, you will not be disappointed.  If you have been before, go back the menu will be different this time!

This was my 2nd time at Fuel, the 1st time we came in was in September for a few small plates, I was blown away by the roasted beets and quinoa cake then... and that the chef actually came out and shared his recipe with me. The service was impeccable and the food divine.

My roommate and I came back for dinner last week and were amazed that Warren, our extraordinary server, not only remembered us, but also what we had last ordered! The salad of arugula, prosciutto, squash & almonds was excellent, but the Gambas (head-on shrimp) were a bit "gamey" for me.

They graciously substituted a gluten-free bean dish for the leek tart that was supposed to come with the flatiron steaks (we're gluten-free for health reasons). While everything was delicious the beans did have a subtle after-taste of gamey shrimp to it. I didn't think much about it until late that night when both the roomie and I awoke at 3am in... umm... intestinal distress.

I really love this place, the creativity of the food and the excellent staff. I won't let a little bad shrimp keep me away.

You certainly aren't gonna stumble across this place accidentally.  Undoubtedly, this establishment is a destination place and with good reason.  To establish such a strong clientele in its hidden location, is a feat but definitely understandable when considering the food they put out and the service they provide. The interior is pretty unique with a slight industrial and mechanic garage look mixed in with a romantic ambiance.

From our initial greeting by the host and the bartender, I knew we were in for an all-around positive dining experience.  Friendly, playful, and inviting, I could tell that Fuel prides themselves on service and the experience as a whole.  Now the food just had to deliver.  We started with the head on shrimp with garlic chile oil and some aioli covered grilled bread.  Although the shrimp were the only items not sourced locally, obviously, there was no fault in that as they were fresh and pretty solid flavor wise.   Always on a health kick and feeling a bit seasonal, I went with the delicata squash.  Usually a protein guy, I ventured out and was more than satisfied with my vegetarian entrée which included a whole delicate squash on top of hazel dell mushrooms, borlotti beans, and spinach.  My date went the complete 180 and got the pheasant two ways which included seared breast, confit leg, with creamy polenta and a soft poached egg.  Pretty remarkable looking and tasting dish all around.  The entrée sizes were perfect size for the price.  Generally in such restaurants I expect to get a fist sized plate of food leaving me ready for a second dinner when returning home.  Not the case here.  Despite the adequate sized entrees, and due to my dates sweet tooth, we still had to get dessert to cap off the evening which was the caramel apple shortcake.  Despite catching my napkin on fire on their fire-prone candle centerpieces, I would say that was a perfect ending to an all-around pleasurable dining experience.

I can see why so many people rave about Fuel and become weekly regulars.  Beyond the food, they provided some of the most welcoming service in a high end restaurant that I've experienced in some time.

This was our second meal here.  I wanted to love it as much as the first time, but unfortunately it just didn't add up.  We had a 9:00 reservation (on a Sat. night), but when we got there there were mostly empty tables.  Everyone working there was more than pleasant (as last time), but the menu seemed very limited.  They were out of the one thing I was leaning towards, which made the menu even shorter.  No one in our party loved their dinner - all were just "ok".  Service was very good, people friendly, and the drink list good.  Just not at all impressed with the food tonight.  The worst part of the evening - we were not even finished with our dinner and the curtains came down, brooms came out and clean up began all around us.  Very distracting and unprofessional in my opinion.  If you want to close the place so early then please don't' take a 9:00 reservation in the future.

Time to edit my review.  Although I still have not had an authentic Fuel Cafe meal as yet, I need to give them a more positive review.  I came here for the Denver Five anniversary dinner.  It was a crawfish boil that was upgraded to a lobster boil.  Although not standard Fuel fare, the meal was prepared in the Fuel kitchen and served in the Fuel  Cafe.  The lobster, the slaw, the corn, the potatoes, the biscuits, and especially the desserts were all exceptionally delicious.

The location/decor here is very modern and eclectic.  The staff and owners are very friendly.  I will definitely be returning here for a regular meal.

Heard great things about this place so decided to check it out.  I went for lunch and was not disappointed.  I started with a bowl of red chile and pork.  The broth had good flavor and was seasoned well.  The pork was plentiful and tender.
I then had the croque monsieur.  It was good.  Not great.  It was served open face.  The bread was excellent.  The ham and gruyere were top quality also.  The bechamel was rich.  Although it was plenty of food, I just felt I didn't get value for my purchase.  If it were a couple bucks cheaper I think I would have enjoyed it more.

This place is a hidden gem in a random neighborhood, that secretly, I hope no one else finds out about...

Their food is consistently delicious - unique, seasonal, healthy (or not!). The folks who work there clearly love their jobs, and it shows with their great thoughtful service. Even take-out is breeze and the food almost tastes as good as if you were sitting there.

The ambiance is cool - despite the outdoor seating being in a parking lot!

Love the sweet potato chips with their homemade dip - amazing! I always get the Cubano, but I know that their salads, and their hummus is to die for.

What I Had?:  Bone In Pork Chop (peas parisienne, pearl onions, bacon butter) and Chocolate Brownie Sundae (figgy chocolate brownie, sweet action whiskey brickle ice cream, hot fudge, marcona almonds)

Holy cow I really love this place.  Tried out the pork chop this time around that was pretty darn good.  Just the right amount of seasoning.  If I had to be critical about something, I'd say the pork chop was a little on the fatty side but I think that's probably typical of pork chops.  On the side, however, was the best darn plate of greens I have ever had in my life.  Leafy greens, peas, pearl onions, and the bacon seemed to be of a smoked variety.. all laced with bacon butter.... mighty mighty super tasty stuff.  Simply amazing.  And just when I thought it couldn't get better.. I get the chocolate brownie sundae which was also amazing.  A perfect mixture of soft brownie, hot fudge, cold ice cream, and salty almond goodness.  Fuel Cafe simply blows me away.

People have asked me what my favorite restaurant is in Denver and I usually struggle answering that question but I believe I have finally have an answer for that question now.  :-)

I agree with highly over-rated. The food was tasty and fresh. Problem is we left hungry. We had 3 small plates (octopus, garden salad and cucumber soup) and 2 large plates (trout and gnocchi). Soup was a bit bitter. The large plates are the size of small plates. I don't mind smaller portions, but please don't charge $23 per plate. We wanted to order more but didn't feel like taking out a 2nd mortgage for the experience. When we weren't overly enthusiastic the waitress was a bit cheeky. The positive is the fun and trendy look and feel. Nice to see this place in the location.

I was working in the building Fuel occupies for a week and we at here for lunch 4 out of 5 days. I know, a bit much, but everything was fresh and delicious and the specials change daily so the menu doesn't get boring.

Over the 4 days I had a fried green tomato BLT, schnitzel, the cubano, a hummus wrap and a whoopie pie. It was all delicious!

What a gem! The hubs and I had an unusually lazy Sunday, thus getting out of church at 12 as opposed to the usual 9:30am. Fearing an unusually busy brunch bustle, we decided to try something unusual (If we were going to wait, we figured we might as well make it worth our while).

To our pleasant surprise, we were seated right away and were greeted with friendly service. Our tummies were grumbling, so I ordered us some scones to start.

Foodgasm. That's the best way to describe the scones. Buttery, flaky, moist...everything a scone should be. Add the lemon curd and the strawberry rhubarb spreads and you've died and gone to foodie heaven. I loved that there were both chocolate and more standard versions, so you got a bit of savory and sweet.

I then added sides of home fries and bacon. Both were pure perfection. Home fries were flavorful with the right dash of salt, and the bacon may have been the best I have ever had, perhaps owing to the choice of fresh meats.

Fuel is a bit off the beaten path as others have mentioned, but the delish dishes and the industrial, funky, relaxing atmosphere make it worth the trek.

I've always had great experiences at Fuel Cafe.
Last night it was no different.

Fuel Cafe is located in the industrial RINO area inside the TAXI development.
If you have not been there take advantage and check it out along with the Art walks the first Friday of the month. The experience will be complete!

I started with a good glass of Prosecco which is always refreshing. My husband had a Pisco Sour, which he was not impressed with but since Fuel is not a Peruvian cuisine place, this did not affect our enjoyment of the rest of the meal.

We started with the burrata, deliciously fresh and creamy with a fig and pear mostarda on top that gave the cheese a great flavor. The smoky flavored grilled romaine (yes, the usual boring romaine!) became perfect with a combination of Spanish flavors of piquillos, Manchego, chorizo and Marcona almonds.

For the entrees we went with the mushroom gnocchi (usually so hard to get them right) which were creamy and yet firm.  Gnocchi's texture is so important to me! They were prepared the French style, slightly sauteed after boiling.

Next we went for the pork tenderloin. It was perfectly cooked. The farro sauce was delicious. Farro and pancetta plus braising green gave that truly peasant Tuscan flavor.

All this was accompanied by a good bottle of Dolcetto d'Alba wine.
We had an excellent Mediterranean meal!

I've been following chef-owner Bob Blair's career since he worked at Parisi. He has always been an unpretentious, passionate and extremely talented cook.
You can tell that the greatness of his dishes comes from that.

We made our second trip to Fuel Cafe this past Friday, after having gone there over the summer. When we were there in the summer, they had tons of great fresh produce (e.g. squash blossoms), so it's a little difficult to compare to the winter, when the seasonal selections are going to be a bit earthier.

Both times we've been there, we've ordered an assortment of small plates, since it allows us to sample lots of different things.

This time, we tried the chicken empanadas, the artichoke piadine, pickled shrimp, and great divide mussels. Our favorite was probably the shrimp--it was a pretty inventive dish, especially since it came with eggplant caviar.

The first few bites of the artichoke piadine were really flavorful, but unfortunately, as we worked our way to the outside, most of the filling was gone, so it got a little starchy.

Both the empanadas and the mussels were solid, but with so many places doing these now, it's becoming more difficult to make them shine.

The problem with seasonal food is that it's seasonal, and mother nature doesn't always smile on us during the winter months. This is no fault of the brave souls who embrace seasonal cooking. We'll probably give Fuel another spin later in the year when the chefs will have a little more to work with.

Like an oasis in the middle of a dessert, Fuel Café is a refreshing spot to find yourself and highly unexpected considering what surrounds it. This is a great little spot for lunch or dinner, but be warned to check their hours and days of opening as they aren't open everyday and I'd hate to see you disappointed by showing up and seeing it closed.

On my most recent visit with Sir Nicholas I had a very nice Cubano sandwich while he chose the special of the day. The special happened to be Pork Shoulder Pozole with a tortilla and man was that a nice, hearty meal. Beyond that though they have fun seasonal things on the menu for example right now you can get a roasted pumpkin salad.

The service here is super friendly and very casual as is the atmosphere. It's kind of a place that I wish was in my neighborhood so I could definitely become a regular, but truthfully I'm willing to become a regular even when I have to drive to get here.

If you have not tried Fuel Cafe, you are seriously missing some of Denver's finest.  A great place tucked away in the Taxi development, you are guaranteed to have a great meal.

Because my office is way to close to Fuel, I can probably recite the menu.  However, there are a few standouts that are over the top.  Fuel has my favorite Reuben - ever!!  Pair it with their homemade chips and you will not be disappointed.  I also cannot say enough good things about the tacos or the fried chicken.

Bob and his team do a great job of making a fun seasonal menu using the best ingredients they can get their hands on.  So the menu evolves regularly...and the daily specials are an art.  If you're close by make sure you sign up for the daily special email.

Save room for dessert if you head to Fuel.  The Whoopie Pie is legendary, but whatever the dessert special they have that day - it's going to be good.  Personally, the Coconut Cupcakes are a dessert I could eat every day.

Things don't really change that much for me in what I look for when I go out..  Good food, good drinks are a must, but most importantly the service has to be commensurate with pricing and everything else..

So I have been to Fuel a few times, for lunch and dinner..  Not only has the food been exceptional everytime I have come in, but the staff is just a bunch of great people..  From the owner all the way through the ranks..

Then I have had the opportunity to hear the owner speak to another customer about how food should be prepared and his ultimate goal of becoming a 100% organic eatery..  When I hear passion about something like that, I can't help but to promote the joint!!!

GO TO FUEL CAFE and you will not regret it!

There are times I have such a great experience dining out that I actually question the authenticity of my feelings - was it the booze talking? was it filled with a crowd chock full of good energy? was my dining companion in a good mood? was I in a good mood? This "thing" does not happen to me often - in fact, the last time was 2 years ago at Potager. You can imagine my delight and surprise that it happened here just last week!

Sure, it was my 1 year wedding anniversary dinner, the weather for outdoor seating was spectacular and we may have had our own version of a whiskey tasting going on, but everything was wonderful here. Corn Flan, Callicrate Steak & the pork tenderloin were all insanely tasty, perfectly cooked and consisted of a good mix of textures. I loved that my wine was served in flasks and beakers. I was tickled pink that we were given a taste of home made lemoncello. You see where I'm going here people - perfection!

My hubs wanted to give this place a 4, primarily because of the location, but I actually feel like the odd location just minutes from downtown makes it feel like a secret that you and only the other diners share. I can not wait to go back and hope that the return visit lives up to this one.

Can you be in love with a restaurant?  Well I am and my friends are.  I picked this restaurant because one of my friends worked for Yellow Cab 25 years ago.  I was excited to show how neat the area was and hoping the food would delight them.  Yes they all were impressed.  Phew!

They are only opened for dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.  I am glad it was a Thursday night.  I can't imagine getting there and the sign read closed.  It happened with some some friends I took there from Mexico.  We were bumbed.  But I really was just showing them around the fun areas of DT.

Last night they introduced a new menu.  It was wonderful. We shared little plates, had strawberry and Kiwi Caiprianas.  I almost didn't order one because I had the best last Saturday night at Terry's and Claudias.  However I talked so much about them the friends had to try them for themselves.  Yes they were good but not as good as last week.

Oh back to the food.  We had mussels in a curry sauce, cheese and meat antipasto with pickled grapes, chili rellenos, and kabobs with baba ganosh.  Yum.
Then we shared 3 yes 3 desserts.  40 layer chocolate cake made with crepes.  OMG!  A rhubarb crisp with a nutty ice cream scoop.  Delicious!  The last one was a lemon and lavendar mouse.  Another OMG!  Plus spun sugar on the cake and crisp.  WW for sure here I come.  The coffee as fabulous.

The service was spectacular.  Everyone there was helping each other.  They were friendly, helpful and just darn cute.  We sat outside after our meal to finish our conversations.  The girls came over to see if we were in need of water or anything.  We mentioned how pretty it would be with little lights on the trees. Viola!  There were lights.

Fuel Cafe is the complete package all the way around.  It is a great place for a party.  There was one going on in the back and it looked like fun.  I wanted to crash but our party of 4 was just perfect.
Yes I will return with friends and family.

It is in a strange little are but do not worry.  You will enjoy. Once you find it you will not have trouble the next time you go.

Can you name any place that you feel the overwhelming urge to go to once a month? Seriously, is there anywhere that your brain and your body demand that you go? A "Go-go-go" that turns from a whine to a thunder, pushing you out the door, into your car or onto your bike, and to the place? Because that happens to me all the time whenever I think of Fuel Café.

The dinner menu changes monthly and every month it's like a calendar reminder goes off in my brain. Bing! Time to go to Fuel for the new menu. Minimum I come here once a month. Typically I come twice. On super awesome months I get more. More house-made gnocchi and pasta. More desserts from scratch (for May 2011 menu it's malted milk balls assembled from scratch). More.

Fuel is open for dinner Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights only (which explains why I haven't just taken up residence there and succumbed to an ever-expanding waistline). The patio is now delightfully open. I was just there Saturday, but--Bing!--might be time to go over there and try out the lunch menu...

Whenever I try to explain to someone where this restaurant is, their eyes cross and then glaze over.  Yes, it's out there.  No, you probably haven't ever heard of Ringsby street, but you know where the Denver Coliseum is, right?

Yes, out there.  And in an old taxi building.  And it just so happens, very close to where the boyfriend and I live.

Dining out for Life proved the perfect opportunity to check this place out.  They had their regular menu, but 25% went to Project Angel Heart.

Bar service was great and I went for a Pisco Sour which was limey, creamy (due to the egg whites) deliciousness.  Our main server was nice but not really present (she appeared to be serving the bar as well).

The boyfriend and I shared the asparagus bruschetta (on a big piece of grilled bread and topped with scrambled eggs) and the burrata.  The burrata was a bit messy, but very tasty.  The asparagus on the bruschetta was awesome (as in, very fresh.  Tis the season for asparagus).

Onward to main courses: I went for the olive oil poached cod.  I was really happy with my choice.  It was a like a mess of delicate cod pieces, potatoes, and fava beans in the most delicious olive oil/mushroom sauce.  It was topped with what tasted like pea shoots and they provided a nice crunch.  A few pieces of the fish were still a bit bony which made me jump, but overall, very nice.

For inquiring minds, yes, most of the ingredients are local.  For a rundown of what nearly went on with the table next to us, please visit youtube, do a search for "Portlandia Is It Local", and let the laughter ensue.  The boyfriend and I could barely hold it it in when the gentleman next to us said "Hi.  I'm from out of town so I was wondering, is your chicken local?  Is the beef local?"

    Yes.  It's pretty much local.

To top off the meal, we shared a molten chocolate cake with a sort of lavender creme fraiche on the side.  Yes, lavender creme fraiche is as good as it sounds.  No.  I won't share.

I didn't think the prices were outrageously bad given the amount of food that we ordered, the portion sizes, and the quality.  This restaurant is definitely a place I would take out-of-town guests to say "hey, my neighborhood is awesome and this restaurant is one of the reasons why."

What's really diggable is the very open air aspect when the garage doors are pulled up.

You should probably check out Fuel if you haven't.  I don't think you'll be disappointed.
