Gailey's is a downtown Springfield staple. Â If you come here on the weekend, expect to wait a while. Â It's always crazy busy on Saturday! Â The timing is perfect on a weekday though, and it's a good spot to go with coworkers for lunch. Â The service is always a hair on the slow side regardless of how busy it is, but at least there hasn't been a wait for a table the last couple of times we've stopped in on a lunch hour.
I'm a sucker for a local place and I'm glad to keep my dollars in town. Â They display local art, and they have live music on Saturdays. Â The building is old and has the charm of the diner that's occupied that corner for decades.
The food is pretty good. Â Nothing to brag too much about, but consistent and tasty -- it's a simple menu, mostly breakfast plates like eggs, bacon/sausage, toast, hash browns, omelets, pancakes. Â They have a couple lunch things too, maybe a sandwich or two and some soup. Â Everything I've had has been great, and the perfect portions for me.
I'll be honest, I never really appreciated eating breakfast food out, until I had really bland hashbrowns and eggs and gritty charred bacon elsewhere. Â Gailey's is no First Watch, but it's local and tasty. Â And they didn't completely crisp my bacon like every other place I've been, cheers to them!
My husband and I stopped overnight in Springfield on our way to Chicago. A friend brought us to Gailey's for breakfast. My husband and I both had the eggs benedict and it was delicious. It was just the thing we wanted after a drive across country and the price was great. I tried the sweet browns and they tasted a bit like latkes. Not exactly what I wanted at the time but when you take a chance you might be disappointed.
The food was good and the coffee was hot but the service was slow. A table that came in after us got their coffee before us. I saw a pot of coffee in the corner and our waitress passed it THREE TIMES before she finally decided to stop and pour us a cup.
Pros: The food.
Cons: The service.
Go here for breakfast but not if you're in a hurry.
