Let me predicate my four start rating for what it is..... it's reviewing a dive bar! The other bad reviews here are just plain stupid, ya give a dive bar one star for being a dive bar???? The beer is cheap, the staff is incredibly friendly.... what else could you possibly want in a dive bar? The crowd is a bit young, but I can't hold that against them. So stfu, get a pint and a shot of whiskey and enjoy yourself!

A definite dive bar. And very small! I'm pretty sure there is an outdoor area to sit with tables but the night I went it was a bit chilly, so I didn't venture over there.

I recall getting two beers, one on draft and one in the bottle for $5. Pretty great if you ask me!

Ps- The ladies bathroom, which is a very large one person, is very clean! :)

I really liked this bar, cheap drinks with a good craft beer selection compared to other bars in the area. Friday night though I experienced something at the hands on the staff that will make me never come there again. My song on the juke box was skipped by the asshole behind the bar who then lied to me about skipping it when I confronted him about it.

I live in Philly but still have family in town so I really enjoyed meeting up with my friends when I come home and going to the tway, but from now on I will urge them all to go elsewhere where my musical tastes are maybe not appreciated but still tolerated.

I was also not offered a refund for my skipped jam, only an empty promise that some lady would be told what happend. Fuck the tway and they shitty skin head wannabe bartender.

Cheap beer is the ONLY plus. The bar is tiny, stuffy and hot, very blah white wall atmosphere and the music is way too loud on weekends.  After a couple of hours here I tend to get cranky and just want to escape the drab shabby dive.

Only bring your friends here when you are broke and have no place else to go! Oh, and word to the wise - NEVER bring a date here if you want to see them again. ;)

UPDATE: 2/17/11 - Unfortunately I've had to remove 1 star for the unprofessional and disrespectful response to my review that I received from the owner of The Gateway herself, Amy. Asking me never to come back - no problem there! Further more insulting me. Shame they can't handle the truth or understand the purpose of Yelp - which is to be honest and inform.

This place makes me happy.  You can bring your own food while you have a good drink.

I like how the crowd is non-intrusive and how the bar tenders aren't pompous pricks like pretty much any other place in the area.  I mean the bar tenders actually engage in conversations with you and don't snub you for asking them to make a real cocktail!  If you haven't tried Tom's signature PB&J shot, you should.

Kudos Gateway.  I've had the wonderful experience of being snubbed at other places nearby but not here.

Gateway isn't a techno-rave bar or a sleazy sports bar but instead a comfortable, cool and clean place you can hang out with friends and enjoy yourself.  My scene for sure.  4 stars.

    Dive is right.

There's not many bars that can make me want to leave my booze behind. But this one did. I couldn't survive 20 minutes in this hell hole. It's like a party in my grandmother's basement. I have to laugh with my friends when I hear this is the 'place to be' now...

    It's a joke.

i second everything jenna c says. tuesday nights don't get any better.

also, no other bar lets me play killswitch engage 10x in a night with no complaints. ok maybe they do complain but i'm usually too wasted to notice.

    ***Edit*** - 2 yrs later...

Jessica, you are clearly one of the silver spooned princesses that wandered down from some hill in North Andover - stay outside, we don't want your kind inside anyway.

This place is STILL my go to place. Over the years I have gotten to know all the bartenders, the owners, and most of the crowd that comes in... It's like a family. Is it cheap? Yes. Is it a dive? No... It's a small, fun, bar with lots of townies whom enjoy a good time close to home with people they know.

I've brought MANY people to the Gateway and they've all fallen in love with the townie charm.

DEFINITELY stop in here if you are in the area. Is the music loud? SURE IS! :) That's just the way we like it!

    I LOVE dive bars.
    The divier the better.
And this one has become my most recent favorite.

For the past few months my sister and I have come here EVERY Tuesday for a little bonding time. (Ok, we come to get W45T3D but whatever.) At this point the bartender knows to expect us and even asked my boyfriend where we were when he arrived an hour before us last week. She said she thinks we're "fun". We ARE the party. Duh.

They have everything a bar should have: Cheap beer on tap, hard liquor for shots (Jager bombs anyone?), and a jukebox. That's pretty much all it takes to keep me happy.

There are usually a few old townies drinking in the corner when we show up but after we take over the music situation they either pack up and head out or sit back and enjoy the show. We take this place over. And lately we've been bringing more people with us every time -- Because seriously, what else is there to do on a Tuesday night?

I've come a couple times on the weekends. It's usually PACKED with "bro's" and college kids. All set. I'll stick to week night drinking :)
