Although I have never had an actual dining experience at Gen Sam's, I have had drinks there numerous times and I have enjoyed the ridiculous plate of nachos that they serve--so good. General Sam's hosts a wide array of clientele which showcases their ability to cater to all types of people roaming about town.

The bartenders are very friendly and do a great job of making you feel welcome even if you are not one of the many locals sitting around the bar. Time flies while you are there and drinks are reasonable.

I consider General Sam's a Somerset staple! I think there is even a TV in the women's restroom, which is always a plus!

I agree w/ Dorie M - it is kind of like Cheers. You'll see bikers, families, retired couples, workers, ladies etc. all here because the food is very good and reasonable prices!

Never had a bad meal yet--it is what it is sports bar food but done well. I've had the garlic steak, turkey burger, a couple of burgers, chef salad. The home cut fries are very good if they are not overcooked (why is overcooking these types of fries so easy to do?). Even the chili nachos, which I expected to be meh as at other places are usually a soggy mess, are good - the chili is GREAT, some of the best I've had. Had a couple of happy hour specials on apps and well drinks - really a good deal. One of my group's bbq pizza, 1/2 price, looked v. good.

Some thought went into designing this place. When you walk in you see the large open bar area with low tables to the back and higher tables to the front with the bar in the middle. it is loud because it is open and ceiling is high. But there are two more areas you don't see. A closed-off side area overlooking dt Somerset is quiet and geared toward families and smaller groups. There are a  couple of TVs so you don't miss any Brewers or Twins games.

Then there's a "smoking" area - what a great idea - that is closed off yet has open screened windows and  there is video and dart games and tables. There is NO smoky smell in the bar or the other street-side area at all.

Some biker came up to me as my son and I were waiting for hub and chatted, pointing out the installation of drink holders on the hand rail by the dart machines. I said this place has good food and he said ya, doncha know who owns it? And I said well ... and he said 'Johnny Montpetit' as if everyone and their sister knows him. Well I don't *know* him but certainly having been in the valley  all my life heard of "the Montpetits" who used to own Archie's bar in dt Somerset and such, but at any rate Johnny's done good with General Sam's.

A fun neighborhood sports bar----kinda reminds me of "Cheers".  Has the best burgers I have ever had, along with homemade fries!!
