I love this place.  It is also less than a block from my apartment so that helps.  The bar is a small gaudy little hangout that is only open after 4:00pm.  The drinks are priced well and the bartenders are all friendly and attentive.  Great place to go for a night-cap.

As for the food, I have only ever ordered the pizza.  I must say the pizza is top notch.  I love it.  The dough is the Peggy's (the owner) recipe and is phenomenal.  It has a yellowish/orangish color to it.  The sauce is also extremely good.  Being originally from the North East where good pizza is everywhere, I had a very hard time finding good thin crust pizza in Chicago.  I love the deep dish, but it is just not practical a lot of the times.  Gino's offers a great thin crust because they pay attention to what really makes one pizza better than the other, the sauce and crust.  If you are ever in Edgewater and looking for a good pizza, look no other place than Gino's.  Make sure to have a drink while waiting for it!

Gino's North is a bit east of the newly cleaned up Granville Red Line Station.  A small joint, it's got one helluva long bar and about a half-dozen red leather u-shaped banquettes and tables.  Walk in here and time-travel back to the cigarette smokeless 1940s.  The ambience is swell and decades of good vibes must be floating about and/or seeped in the gleaming wood, because if you're having more fun than usual, don't feel weird.  5 plus stars for that.  However, the night we were there, the pizza wasn't that great.  (We thought it was the crust's fault.)  I so want to give this "gin joint" a rave review.  I love the fact there's Peggy, who's been making pizza there for 30 plus years in a 1950s apron and full make-up.  I love that there's a John and Spike.  John was bartending and waitering the whole place and doing a great job, but it was Friday night and the place was jumpin'.  2-3 stars.  I'll be back for a drink.  Gadzooks, how many times do you get to drop in on the past?  And know who won the war?  Yep, I'll be back.  I hear the combo sandwich is awesome.

I have been here twice and have had great experiences both times! The food and drinks are both delicious! The bartenders are very nice as well!! Also, another thing i love about this place is that it is a good place you can sit down and talk with a friend. Not too loud or busy which makes this place so great!!

I love the ambinece in this place and the pizza was above average. I hated the TV blasting. Killed the ability to enjoy the vibe and nice Xmas decorations.

WORST bar service in the world.   Wish I could try this pizza everyone's raving about.  While I still sit here, waiting, I have nothing else to do but write a review.   Sure would be nice to get a drink, too.... Wow.  Never again!!!!

i've dined here and had their pan pizza a few times.  next time i plan to try thin crust

in recent years i've come to order extra-cheese as a topping at almost all pizzerias including GN.  Others who're like minded will be in extra-cheese heaven if ordered likewise here--EC to the max.

They're pan pizza really satisfies and reminds me a lot of the Golden Crust Pizza restaurant that used to be on Elston Ave near Pulaski

And pizza price is quite reasonable @ GN too.  Everybody knows Gino's North has absolutely nothing in common, besides original name,  with the other chicago-based deep-dish franchise.  The Granville Red-line stop practicially drops you at their door.

i won't deny i'm turning a blind eye to food serving matters eating @ GN and weighing quite heavily on just enjoying the great food bite by delicious bite.  that's how i am, and yes there's enough truth in what many other reviews describe about their waitstaff 'service'.

Love the small restaurant feel with the curved bar!  Not too many seats in this gem of a chicago-style pizza place, but worth the wait (grab a drink at the bar).  I had the thin crust pizza with spinach (half olives for my man) and the crust was delicious.  Though I happen to be a NY-style pizza worshiper, I will head to Gino's North when I'm looking to satisfy my Chicago pizza craving.

Great food and ambiance, as ever. The deep dish has a great flaky crust and everything is very reasonably priced.

Had the Italian beef this time, and it was not the soggy mess I'm used to getting. Tasty.

The renovated facade is much more inviting from the street.

We ordered the Gino's Special deep dish pizza. I can't help but compare it to what I remember of Giordano's, and I just don't think it was as good. Maybe I should try the thin crust.

Atmosphere is great. Bartender was amazing and such a multitasker. Based on the other reviews the pizza is worth the wait, however, when you're really hungry and they tell you the pizza is gonna be an hour... So I ordered the ravioli, much to my disappointment. The sauce was watery and lackluster. The garlic bread was very good though.

The pizza at this place is average at best about 3 stars, maybe even 3.5. But their service is absolutely horrendous. I have been here often and have dealt with mostly nothing but bad service.

I used to order from here often since I live near by and the pizza situation in Edgewater/Rogers Park basically sucks with one, maybe 2 exceptions. Have not ordered from here in about a year because something always gets messed up by these guys, but decided I'd try again to see if they cleaned up their act up.The short answer - no.

These are a few of the issues I have encountered here: Don't know how many times I have ordered from here and they tell me 35-40 minutes. I show up 45 minutes later only to be told it will be another 20-25 minutes. It's like they work at 2 speeds, slow and stop. There was even one time where they "lost" my order. Another time I kept calling and their lines were constantly busy. So I walked across the street to place my order and it turned out the phone was off the hook. They probably missed several other orders while the phone was off the hook. Great way to run a business! And that about sums up this establishment, incompetent.

Their thin crust is not the greatest but because all other thin crusts in the area suck, (except Apart Pizza) I would go here when I didn't feel like venturing out of the neighborhood and had a craving for pizza. The crust is ok, the sauce isn't that great and they don't put enough on for my taste.Their deep dish is absolutely horrendous, it's almost like they stacked 2 thin crust pies on top of each other. And as for their Italian Beef, they don't even have hot giardiniera, they offer peperoncini peppers. Pretty lame.

I really need to stop going to places I already know can be such pain to deal with. There are far better pizza dives across the city  that are worth going to .

    Yuck.

Ordered out from Gino's North for the first and last time. I ordered a 14" special and half of it went in the trash.

There is absolutely NO SAUCE on/in these "DEEP DISH" pizzas. Honestly. None. What we got was a heaping pile of salty cheese that encompassed minute bits of mushroom and green pepper.

Aside from it having enough grease to drown a small child, this is the pizza you got in your cafeteria in elementary school. Honest to God, how is this considered deep dish? How does this place have four stars?

And the crust! What the heck is that? Some orange soggy junk that tastes nothing like a deep dish crust should.

Would have been better off buying a home run inn for a fraction of the cost at the local grocery. And been twice as happy.

We went here after a day at the Gold Coast Arts Festival and I could not have asked for a better end of day meal.

Wade was working that day and the amazing Peggy was in the kitchen. Wade prepared us some Delicious margarita's in pint glasses, not too sweet and very refreshing. The antipasto appetizer was fresh, huge and delicious, perfect for three people to split.

We also ordered our favorite pizza, the thin crust with extra garlic and sausage. The definitely understand the concept of extra garlic, I do not have to worry about vampires for a few days. The sausage is fresh, and the crust is thin but VERY crisp and crunchy.

Overall an amazing find right by the (currently being renovated but soon to be completed) Granville station on the red line. The only drawback used to be that this was a cash only joint, but they now accept credit cards.
They have daily drink specials and the people are fantastic. A perfect local pizza joint with the best pizza in the area.

I'm a member of a pizza club in Chicago (a bunch of friends trying out different pizzerias every month) and I was suggested this place a while back from a nice girl at Simon's one time. Big hit - the magical old woman who runs the kitchen is so sweet and nice and she makes a killer pie. The assmosphere of this place is awesome - it's got a genuine vintage feel. I'm not in the neighborhood often enough to frequent this place or I would.

Stopped in again for a pick-up order.  Grabbed a couple of their $3 drink specials and got mystery shots on the house from a very engaging bartender while we waited for the pizza to come up.

The thin crust was just as good and crunchy as ever, with that classic Gino's North almost orange crust and heavenly toppings.  We got a pepperoni and black olive - no skimpy toppings here!!

Awesome update - they take credit cards now.

Just a quick stroll down from where I was staying, Geno's North didn't disappoint. The ambiance was low-key and cozy. Everyone had their little conversations going and there even was a guy that had one of the best laughs you would ever hear. Now... to the food. We started of with the antipasto platter which was yummo-o! We started making little meat burritos and dipping it into that great mustard sauce. The deep dish took an hour to make but the guy notified us before we ordered, so it was ok. The pizza was awesome but if you're not a fan of cheese, you might want to go some place else. Their version of a deep dish pizza was a slab, yes, slab o' cheese. One slice was enough for me and I'm the type of person that can eat. I recommend going here as long as you don't have a very large party. We had 7 people eating and they had to put 2 extra chairs at the end of the booth.

As someone said this place looks very intimidating on the outside, one would wonder why they would risk their business and renovate it a bit.

But I can see why. Their pizza is superb! After you try their pizza, you won't care what it looks like on the outside. Sometimes a fancy looking place doesn't always mean the food will be good.

I usually order the thin crust with spinach and mushroom. The woman who makes the pizza is an 80 year old who owns the place and she makes it from scratch, which what makes it good. Crust is buttery and sauce is savory, and it has enough cheese.

The place is a small cozy place with red booths and locals hanging out, very old school. It's open until 2am since it has a bar as well, making it a great casual place to hang out on a Saturday night.

Cute little happenin' pizza bar on the edge of Roger's Park and Edgewater.

From the outside, it looks so run down that it's easy to be intimidated to go in. Inside, you're greeted by a vibrant man/owner/bartender and feel right at home. On one TV: the Cubs game (I'm learning to love them coming from California); on the other TV: the TV guide channel (odd?).

I was lured in with daily drink specials. I had a long day of work and just wanted a cheap drink to take some edge off. Yesterday (Wednesday) was $3 Margarita night -- typically not my drink, but what the hell. I order one (you can choose salted or unsalted rim on the martini glass) and the bartender pours me a strong glass, probably picking up that I was there to do my business. I take that as a friendly gesture and decide to order a Cocktail Pizza ($5), which is dine-in only.

I talk to one of the other patrons sitting at the bar and he welcomes me to Chicago and tells me he's been coming here a while and that everyone there is genuinely nice; if they're anything like him, I believe him.

My food came out, and unfortunately for me, the quality of the Cocktail Pizza is somewhere between an awesome Bagel Bite and a cheap slice of pizza at the Airport. At least the portion wasn't bad for $5 -- it did manage to satisfy my hunger at the time.

I made out with a strong cocktail and a filling meal for $10 after tax and tip, which is hard to do (I find) in Chicago. I wasn't too happy with the food, but I'm sure it's the product of me not ordering one of their 'real' pizzas. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll be sure to drop by again for a drink a deep-dish.

I just went back to Gino's North last night with friends for late night drinks and pizza.  It's just great, one of those gems you don't want too many people to know about so that they place doesn't get too crowded and lose its charm.

    The highlights:
    - the bartenders and the wonderful woman who makes the pizzas in the back, they are Chicago classics
    - a great pour
    - great, affordable, thin crust pizza
    - pretty good deep dish, not my favorite in the city (that would be Gullivers) but solid and I would order it if I had the time and didn't want to go out to Howard
    - the lighting, small booths, and decor during Christmas.  It's just a place you want to hang out with friends til 2am (Open 'til 2AM!)

This was one of all the best surprises I've had in a while.

I vaguely remembered hearing good things about this ratty looking little place near the Granville el stop.  So when my friend from Virginia came to visit in January we decided to finally check it out. Turns out that behind that unpromising facade is an beautiful but cozy little vintage bar and restaurant with amazing pizza and a charming staff.  Oh and there's a jukebox and adorable little booths and you can tell nothing's been changed since the '30s.  And that's a very good thing.

If you like unique, unpretentious eating and drinking establishments, you will love Gino's North.

Just be sure to bring cash.  And be prepared to have a few drinks and enjoy yourself as the pizza takes a little while.

It's been 4 years since I've reviewed Gino's, but they still get 4 stars from me, even after a change in ownership. The bar isn't smoky anymore, and unfortunately, they still don't take credit cards (BOOOOO!) BUT, this is some of the BEST PIZZA IN CHICAGO. I don't know what on earth they do, but it terrific. The little old lady who looks likes your grandma I think makes it in the back, and both the thick and thin crusts are amazing.

My boyfriend and I order pizza there regularly, as I still live a few blocks away. Call ahead, pick it up, just do it.

After pondering where to meet up, a friend suggested Gino's North, which turned out to be an outstanding suggestion. It is located steps away from the Granville Red Line stop. Not only does the ambiance and decor have a "Scarface or Sopranos" movie feel, but there was a jukebox with an amazing array of old school selections. The service was great and the other customers were friendly as well :).

The pizza has to be the best pizza I have had since my move to Chicago!

Good Food + Good Company + Good Music = A wonderful Night!

When we first moved to the neighborhood, we had the deep dish. Since there is no cross-over on toopings we like, that meant ordering 2 small deep dish pizzas. BOTH were disappointing. And I didn't know they were a cash-only place so I had to go find an ATM. I then avoided them for months.
However, walking past them every night and smelling the delicious pizza smells eventually got me back in the door, this time to hang out with friends with pizza and drinks. It was great pizza (thin crust), they had good house wine (BIG pour), and a really great beer special too.

I have to give them 4 stars because I am now addicted to their pizza and love it, but their deep dish is just mediocre for some reason.
They are tiny and cash only, but the inside is actually really nice if a little worn around the edges. This is a real neighborhood bar. They've been in the neighborhood forever and most of the customers have been going there for years.

All in all, go for the thin crust, and if you want to hang out, go on a weeknight when there's plenty of room to have your own vintage candlelit booth and you can get drink specials.

Another plus, on Friday & Saturday the kitchens are open til midnight while everything else in the neighborhood closes at 10.

I'm just not impressed. I got a strong recommendation from a friend and finding myself with no food in the house, I decided to get a carry-out from Gino's.

I give them points for character. This is a cool looking little hole in the wall. I love me some dives.

The food wasn't bad, but it just wasn't good. I went for a deep dish sausage pizza and some garlic bread. The garlic bread was so bland and dry I'm not even going to consider it. I threw most of it out.

The pizza was fine. I have a tendency to build things up in my head to a point where they couldn't possibly live up to my expectations. Maybe that's my fault.

Let's take the pizza in order.

    1. Crust: IT'S ORANGE. WHAT THE CRAP?! I was expecting so much more from "Peggy's special recipe". Like an old Italian woman's kitchen. This stuff is bland, soggy, and just blah.

    2. Sauce: This is the first place where this review will go through the looking glass. I normally don't like a lot of sauce on pizza. But I'd like some. There is like an eye dropper of sauce that is spread out. Just not enough.

    3. Toppings: Eh. The sausage was fine. I'm not going to run screaming to the mountains, but it's kind of hard to have bad sausage.

    4. Cheese: The second anomaly of this review. I love cheese. It's hard to have too much cheese on a pizza for me. Gino's comes really, really close. I'm not going to say there's too much, but man, it's a lot. Todays cold leftovers were almost hard to eat because of how much cheese.

All in all, I was expecting much more. I'd like to say I'll go back and give the thin crust a try, but I probably won't

Go here to experience some original Chicago pizza. Both the deep dish and thin crust represent some of the best in Chicagoland. Drinks and foods prices are reasonably priced. The service is decent and atmosphere dark, but warm. I almost passed by the place, tucked almost under the Granville El stop.

I don't recommend going here with a big group, as the rounded booths cater better to small groups (4-5). Any bigger, and you'll have to split up between tables.

Gino's North is a great place to be!

From the outside, well....it had me fooled.
On the inside.....gorgeous little pizza joint!

Staff.....They're great! They're nice to talk to and always just very cool.

Patrons.....Diverse crowd, not just locals and not a college bar (thank you thank you!)

Atmosphere....Every single time I've stepped inside Gino's North I felt at home.  Such a warm cozy atmosphere.

    Food.....It's good!  Do it!

Drinks....These bartenders have been to a few rodeos.  They know what they're doing!

Beer.....They have the basics (Fat Tire, Stella, Blue Moon, Guinness, 312, Honkers, Peroni, Killian's)  I REALLY REALLY  WISH THEY WOULD BRING THEIR BEER SELECTION UP A NOTCH (like the nearby, Norse Bar...killer beer selection, btw).  Personally, I can't stand the basic beers and I see them almost everywhere and it is so disheartening for me.  It's also the only thing keeping me from giving this wonderfully awesome place a fifth star. I really want to give that fifth star, too! (hint, hint, Gino's north)

All in all, this is a cool lil' joint and it'd be a damn shame not to stop in and enjoy it.

    I effing love this place.

This is the kind of place that makes Yelp worth all our trouble. It is tucked next to the Granville red line stop and looks like no one has any business going there. When you open the front door, however, you are greeted to long curvy bar wrapped around a central fountain/statue. The decor is dark, smoky, reminds me of a speakeasy (reminds?), but without the annoying jazz. Instead, they MAY have annoying dance music as this place is very gay-friendly, being a few doors down from the Anvil nightclub. That is great because everyone I've ever met here has been all-round friendly! And if I am there, I may be annoying the clientele myself with Johnny Cash or RATM or something completely inappropriate to the scene. Feel free to liven things up yourself with the internet-connected jukebox in the back.

As for the food, hands-down the best pizza I've ever had, Chicago or otherwise. I love both the "deep dish", which I would not call a Chicago-style: it is about 2/3 the depth of your standard Gino's East, etc; AND the thin-crust. I recommend the Gino's Special! Also, though I've only ever gone there for pizza, the pizza & garlic bread is also very good.

Drinks are cheap and they have $2 daily drink specials, yes, even on weekends. I've gone in a few times just to have a $2 beer after work and watch Wheel of Fortune or Law & Order or whatever they have playing on the two TVs.

I urge you to go here to try this place out, and complement the lovely Peggy on her jewelry!

Also, I urge you not to come here because I would hate it to become a hipster-packed Kuma's-esque mess.

Stepping into Gino's North is like stepping onto the set of Goodfellas.

We live in the neighborhood and love to stop in for pizza or just a beer at the bar. The thin crust is flakey and buttery beyond belief and the deep dish and just more of the same with more gooey cheese and toppings. Be ready to wait if you order the deep dish - it can be over an hour for a pie. But there are always drink specials and descent appetizers to keep you happy while you wait. The pizza is the real draw here and well worth the wait.

Not a great place for a bigger group or someone in a hurry - but if you have the time to relax and enjoy a brew while you wait, this is the place for you.

Gino's North is the kind of hole-in-the-wall place that helps make city living so enjoyable.

Their pizza is great, service is friendly as long as you're not a jerk, and the decor, oh, the decor is SO unexpected.  Think Roaring 20s, except in a single-lot-width storefront.

If I lived closer, I'd be there very often.

Here are some tips that people should know before dining at Gino's:

    01. Bring cash. This place does not take credit cards.
    02. Come early. There are only a few booths available, so be prepared to sit at the bar once those fill up.
    03. COME EARLY. Once this place fills up (and it did, on a Wednesday night), the kitchen becomes s-l-o-w. As in, I overheard the server telling people they would be waiting over an hour for their food.
    04. Don't try to come in a big group. I would really only ever try to eat here with one other person, maybe two.
    05. Order Gino's special spaghetti. The one where the sauce consists of butter, garlic, and Parmesan. Add meatballs to it. This, along with the garlic bread that comes with it, is the best thing you will eat all night. Meatballs that are delicious on their own without the need for red sauce? Gasp! Amazing!

The first time we ever entered GN, the place was filled with smoke and upon opening the door, everyone at the bar stared/glared at us. We backed out and ate somewhere else. Then friends told us that this place has their favorite thin crust pizza in all of Chicago. Hey, I like pizza... and they have pasta too! Let's give it a shot.

Walk in at about 6pm on a Wednesday night. It is pretty empty - a few booths taken, some bar regulars having drinks. We manage to get a seat in a booth no problem. The bartender/server brought menus, took drink orders, food orders, it was quiet, there was Wheel of Fortune playing on the TV. So far so good. Also, this place may also be the most festive looking bar in town.

Salad and garlic bread come out. Garlic bread = delicious. Salad = not so much, a weak Italian dressing. The pizza (medium think crust Gino's special) and spaghetti come out. The spaghetti blows my mind. I love garlic butter sauce. The meatballs are equally amazing. The pizza was strange though. The crust was a hybrid mix between a thicker thin crust (ala thin crust from Calo) and a dry, cracker thin crust (ala Apart). I liked the thickness of the crust, but it was just far too dry for me to enjoy. The toppings and sauce could be improved upon too.

As our meal progressed, the place started to fill up. The server was trying her best but GN was really just understaffed, with ONE person working the bar AND being a server and bringing food out, etc. It took a really long time to get change when we were paying the bill, even though we were standing at the bar. The minute you get up to put on your coat, these booth vultures sitting at the bar spring into action, drinks in hand, sliding into your warm seat. It was just a little too much for me. At least we didn't have to deal with the hour-long wait for food.

Next time I'll skip the pizza, get 3 orders of the spaghetti... at 3pm.

The pizza is fantastic----far better than the other big name gionts (p.s. I know how to spell joints).
The drinks are reasonably priced. The bartender (he's sweeter than a daiquiri) is so fine, you'll spend your paycheck just to keep talking to him.
The girls are free and talkative, the guys are queens and kings.
The jukebox hums all nite. And they have drink specials that are sure to please.

When this place is described as being small, you better take that into consideration.  Take your typical neighborhood bar size (1 storefront width x the length of the bar on one side) now put 5 booths on the other side.  I foolishly went here with six people.  Anyway, 3 at the bar and 3 in a booth... and I have to give props for the staff doing their best to occomodate us.

FOOD:  Didn't want to wait the hour for the deep dish so we got regular crust.  Also take note that it is Lent so we got a veggie.  These two aspects made the pizza just ok, but I know I din't give the proper room to judge.  My friend got pizza bread which was 5 stars in itself.  I will most likely do carry out in the near future.  I can tell the deep dish will be awesome.

DRINK:  No taps.  Major bummer.  Stuck to bottles. They had quite a few bottles to choose from.  Then a shot of Whiskey and we left.  No Sailor Jerry

ATMOSPHERE:  This place was extremely friendly.  Had the Black Hawks game on and they lost, boo.  If you look at the old fountain behind the bar it resembles the Rainbow Club on Division or maybe even the front area of the Green Mill.  Dim light which was relaxing.  Juke box didn't come on until we left, but they had one of those computer ones where you can download any song.

In all, it was a good experience.  Great staff. I wont go back with more than 3-4 people.  I will be getting some take out soon.

For more than three years I have lived less than five minutes away from this place, and like just about every single other person to review it I always just passed it by.

    We're all idiots.

I'm moving out of Edgewater at the end of this month and I'm seriously kicking myself for never going into this place before.  I went in with a group of five people and we ordered the largest deep dish pizza they had; an hour and a half later we all walked out extremely gruntled and only four dollars less in our wallets each, and that was able to cover a generous tip.

The first time I walked into this place, that my friend had been RAVING about for weeks, my literal first thought was, "I'm going to kill him."  From the outside, this place looks like the biggest hole-in-the-wall, dive bar ever.  WRONG. WRONG. WRONG.

I have come to LOVE this place both for the pizza and the atmosphere.  The pizza first: absolutely delicious.  The thin crust...not so exciting.  But the "deep dish" (which I actually think is a cross between deep and think crust.  You can't necessarily pick it up to eat it but it also doesn't feel like a block of cheese either)...holy smokes.  The sauce is deliciously "round" and kind of sweet and the crust...AH...you can tell it's homemade and super fresh.  Just wonderful.  And very affordable.

And the atmosphere: the service has always been GREAT.  Very friendly and attentive without being annoying.  All I can say is they're like real people in there who just want to help you have a nice dinner with some pizza and wine or beer.  I somehow always forget this place is there, but then I go in and can't believe I don't go in more often.

WARNING: It's cash only.  That kills me every time!

I'll admit, I was one of the "yeah, okaaaay" people walking by this place for  years. So glad I stopped in. This is really the kind of place I could actually get excited about "going out to the bar." Great jukebox, some decent drink specials in there (nothing mind-blowing, though), and yes, some of the most delicious bar pizza out there. The little half-round booths along one wall, the classy dim lights, the statue/fountain behind the bar... totally a place to come hang out, have some drinks, some pizza, listen to some classic tunes, and actually be able to carry on a conversation in normal conversational tones--not shouting over drunken white hats and sports on the TV. Imagine that!

    Only warning: cash only.

*EDIT: After a visit on a (relatively slow) Saturday night, my 5 stars have dropped to 2 after some of the WORST service I have ever endured as a restaurant/bar patron. Yes, there was only 1 guy working the bar and waiting tables; however, with only 1 small group and 1 couple at the bar and 2 other tables (of 2) that came in after us, even a new waitress at Jimbob's Truck Stop could have managed that.... My friend had to go to the bar and sit and wait for a solid 5 minutes to get another drink and the beer I was supposed to have gotten 5 minutes before that. He spent more time talking and flirting with the boys at the end of the bar than on the remainder of the customers, who all have the same right to actually be waited on.  The "another minute" he gave us to check out the menu became more like 15, despite my (apparently futile) attempts to make eye contact.

Then when the food finally came (again, I can understand a little wait: there's one woman cooking), it was utterly mediocre. My 10 cents worth of pasta was topped with maybe 3 tablespoons of tomato paste and my friend's sandwich, while adequate, was more a White Castle sized offering. But our waiter never stopped by to check in on how things were... And according to her, her Manhattan was one of the funkiest (in a bad way) she had ever had.

Oh, and after dropping several dollars on the jukebox (few others were putting anything on), we got to hear about 4 of our songs before it switched off onto others we had not chosen.

So ultimately, I might still get a take-out pizza, but it'll be a while before I park myself in a booth there again.

Tiny space, hidden under the Granville Red Line stop.  Some good pizza and delicious pasta dishes.  Tons of atmosphere.

They turn the music off whenever Wheel of Fortune comes on.

Love the old women that run the place.

This is another neat little hole-in-the-wall bar in Edgewater.  In fact, this is sort of THE hole-in-the-wall bar, as the distinct lack of exterior decor (a plain sign reading Gino's North, bars over the windows) belies the mid-twentieth century charm inside.  As has been said by the other reviewers, the bar takes up half the space (the other half being filled with small intimate booths), and what a bar it is!  I'm not entirely sure how to describe the behind-the-bar area, but there are a lot of mirrors and a statue.

Drink prices are typically cheap, as they are for an off-the-beaten-path Edgewater bar; Old Style is $2, and comes to you with a bottle and 8 oz. glass.  The bartenders are old folk and friendly; they'll often give you a second whether you asked for it or not, so if you don't want more than one, you need to be quick to decline.  It's also cash-only, so be advised; going to the 'L' stop and paying ATM fees is a drag.

I gave Gino's North 4-stars only because the bar/restaurant is so damn cool. It totally reminds me of something out of Goodfellas or A Bronx Tale. I love when I can walk into an establishment and feel like I went back in time a few decades. I have no complaints about the food. Had a deep dish pizza when I was there... It wasn't what we expected - it was pretty flat - but I thought it was very good and my friends thought it was merely ok. We all agreed it was definitely better cold when we ate the leftovers for breakfast. I mention that because the amount of food they give you is massive.

As a whole, you'll enjoy this place if you walk in expecting to eat a good pizza, but don't think it's a off-shoot of Gino's East or you'll be disappointed. But definitely check this place out if you want to feel like you walked into the 1960s.
