Much better experience than expected! Great drinks, people and atmosphere. We'll definitely come back!
Although I am in Mt. Shasta much more frequently than most bay area folks, I made my first visit to the Gold Room only last week. I found a spot that is a combination of a 1950's barber shop (check-out the floor covering), a vinyl and formica repository (check-out the stools and bar top), and a good old fashion acid trip (check-out the multi-colored neon bar back-lighting). The building itself seems like several prefabs shoved together to create a larger space. There is an adjacent Asian restaurant and the relationship between the two is best described as: The bar is to the restaurant, what a garage is to a house when connected by an enclosed breezeway. Hopefully that painted some semblance of a picture of this place. Speaking of "old fashion", that's what I ordered. The young lady behind the bar was very meticulous in its preparation. It was very good and my suspicions were quickly confirmed. She returned to ask me how it was, because she had never before made one. She seemed genuinely pleased when I said that it was very good (I wasn't lying).
For a weekday afternoon it seemed to be doing steady business as the bar and two tables were full. Overall I quite enjoyed the place.
After leaving the wedding we were in town for, we opted for additional libation and ended up at the Gold Room. I was still in slacks and tie and didn't know what to expect from the Shasta locals. Fortunately I left unscathed with all my teeth still in their place.
The security/bounce staff was friendly and good natured and the ambiance in general was conducive to having fun, good bar lighting, separated open rooms etc... The only negatives I can remember is that the bar seemed somewhat small so on a crowded night it could be difficult squeezing in to get a drink and they don't take plastic so bring cash!
