The wait for devlin's patio was about 40 min so we tried green briar, because the wait was non existent and we were hungry. Never again. Ordered caprese salad and recieved a bowl full of extremely lightly dressed field greens with some cherry tomatoes sliced in half and a single small mozzarella ball picked into a few pieces and sprinkled on top. For TEN dollars. We ate a few bites, politely complained, and while the server apologized it was still on the check. The dinners aren't even worth mentioning. We ate them but they were not even good, we were just that hungry. I guess the people waiting at devlins had probably made the same mistake once, and that's why they're willing to wait over half an hour at 830 for dinner.
Review Source:Oh green briar - you are full of surprises. Â You are like the summer season in Boston, you can be aggravating, loving or confusing and before you know it, it's closing time. Â
Service is ok and the drinks are ok. Â They have live bands which can be fun and the crowd is very mixed here. Â Either true locals all night or it's three- 21st birthdays happening all at once.
I was in Brighton for work and happened across the Green Briar for lunch. We were literally the only customers there, so the food understandably came out a bit slowly but man, was it good.
How come nobody has mentioned their clam chowder? It is PHENOMENAL. There are no potatoes. Just clams. A boatload of clams. For only 7 bucks you get a super tasty bowl of New England's finest. I also ordered a "side" of sweet potato fries for 6 bucks (to round out my healthy meal), and was not expecting the enormous basket of fries that came out. It was piping hot, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and not overly sweet. It was the perfect accompaniment to my chowder.
Boy do I love this place! The atmosphere is great, and the bartenders and waitstaff are so friendly and are great with recommendations. Â I really enjoy listening to the irish accents on some of the bartenders too :) The food is fantastic - the chicken fingers, southwest chicken salad, fish & chips and chicken curry are some favorites, but the steak tips are my reason for going. Â They are phenomenal and are some of the best in the area, with absolutely delicious mashed potatoes. Â
The only reason i'm leaving off a star is because their pretzel appetizer used to be my  #1 and something I craved on the regular.  However recently, they changed them from normal looking pretzels to stick-form and the past few times i've ordered them, they have been overcooked or just straight up burned so they just don't taste as good.  Please go back to the other version! (or just stop burning them).
This spot in Brighton is a great neighborhood hangout- friendly bartenders, standard yet tasty pub fare, and a plethora of fun events really makes this a fun joint to enjoy a beer or two. It doesn't matter what time you go to the Green Briar, Â I guarantee there will be something to entertain you and your entourage. I can't think of one thing that's quintessentially unique about the place; rather its ability to facilitate fun at moderate impact to your wallet is a major draw.
Review Source:My husband and I have been coming here at least 3 times a month since moving to the area more than 2 years ago. Safe to say, we've always enjoyed the Briar. But we were more than a little disappointed this past weekend when we ordered our usual burgers and discovered they were noticeably different - they were frozen.
Anyone can tell you a frozen burger isn't the same. Doesn't look or taste the same as a fresh burger. What's more, they had cut back on the toppings as well, putting half the amount of cheese and bacon and mushrooms on top as they normally would. We mentioned something to our server, who brushed us off.
The Briar didn't lower their prices, but they lowered their quality. If I want a frozen burger, I'll eat at home and save myself the $12. Better yet, I'll just patron another one of the nearby restaurants that isn't trying to pull a fast one on its customers. The Briar just lost two of its most loyal customers.
Local bar - not many people since I really only come here on Tuesday nights for Stump Trivia.
It's a pub so I don't expect the food to be spectacular. Â Their steak tips is what I would recommend and sweet potato fries. Â Their vegetable medley came out soaked in butter though. Â All you tasted was butter, even if you pat it down, it didnt help.
Their waitstaff was eh. Â I didn't have special orders, but friends I went with did, they even came back out to confirm food allergies, so we thought the order would be right, but nope it's stil came out wrong. Â But they take it back and correct it.
Service wasn't awesome but the place is okay for a chill night.
So this is a TWO part review. Based on going on on a normal night... and then teh second part on hosting events there (YES, you can host events there and rent out the bar - and YES, Barry did yet another event that went flawlessly... is it the venues.. or perhaps Barry has something to do with it!)
So on a normal day or night, It is a good place to go.
After reading so many reviews on yelp, both about the Briar and other places, I am convinced my standards are not as lofty or demanding as others. seriously, some people thing a place with a $10 burger should be 5 star service.. go to L'espalier if you want that!
So the food is good. not ground breaking ,nothing super original, but pretty good. I love the pretzel appetizer (but I love pretzels!). Also great are teh sweet potato fries. Not shoe string, but nice, thick cut. yum.
Lots of TV's, often with soccer games on which is great. I had a fun time there one day (Marathon Monday afternoon) cheering on Man U with a kid about 6-7 years old cheering against me! it was great!
Prices are reasonable, service in acceptable, and drinks are good.
If you can, and the weather is nice, and dont care about the game on TV, go to the outside deck outback. Great at night and when it is cool out.
NOW
on to the second part
so I host events from time to time. For charities, for work, for fundraisers, etc
So this past december, I ran a HUGE Toys for Tots drive. We raised over $12,000 in cash and toys, and lots of fun!
We tossed a big party - and used the Briar!
They blocked off the hwole right side for us (big room, tables,, half the bar.) had a full staff helping us, PA for the DJ and announcements (and lots of raffle prizes). Catered food by them (which far exceeded my expectations. yes, I enjoy their normal menu, but large scale party menus, etc often times lead to a lower quality of food)
I was surprised, as many guests commented on the quality of food, not just the free drinks!
But as with any event, it is not just the setting and food that make it good, but the staff. and in this case, they were first class. From set up to tear down, and everything in between. They ade the night easier for me, and THAt is what is most important.
The bar was free to rent when we bought the food, we were able to do a semi-open bar (drink tickets) to keep costs reasonable, and they helped me out with everything
Have an event there, if you ar elooking for a party, etc. They have separate rooms, you dont have to worry about random people walking in, and the service and food is top notch!
If I were basing this review on the atmosphere and service at the Green Briar, I'd have to give it a 4. Â My husband and I go there a lot on Wednesdays and Saturdays specifically because Jackie and Kevin (bartenders) are incredibly friendly and make us feel really welcome. Â They are friendly, chatty, attentive, and just overall awesome. Â
The only thing that stands in the way of my being able to give the Green Briar a 4 overall is the fact that lately the quality of the draft beer has been pretty bad. Â These guys need to drop the beer temperatures by 5 degrees (at least) to ensure a cold, crisp beer. Also, from time to time, draft beers are stale. Â Not a good scene when you're dying for a cold, fresh beer.
All in all, we still go into the Briar a couple of times a week and we just navigate our beer choices around the couple of draft lines we know to be somewhat cold and fresh.
Possibly the worst service I've had in a while.
Food was slightly above average for an Irish bar, but waiting for it forever, not ideal. I got the burger with blue cheese, and a side of fries. It was a huge plate of food, but tardy in it's arrival to the table. My boyfriend got the cubano sandwich, which he liked quite a bit.
The one drink I had was good, and I would have gotten another one, but by the time we were able to Get the attention of our waitress, I was so fed up with the place I wanted to leave. The first one came with melted ice in it, I should have known to order another one when my food came even though I was not even halfway done with my first one.
What was the kicker? The table next to us (two people, we were a party of 6) got their food right away, had the same waitress back numerous times to deliver drinks, mixed and beers. Why them and not us? I hate having to ask the hostess to get out waitress for us, but this had to happen twice in one meal.
My friends who work in the neighborhood and frequent this place say the subpar service is consistent. I doubt I'll be back.
This review is for the Thursday night family feud-ish game night - fun game and easier than trivia! I had an awesome time and would def come for this again. My friend had played several times before and was lamenting that Greg was no longer running the game and had been replaced by someone else. He even asked the lady where Greg was - she didn't know.
Greg, if you're out there, you had a fan and he misses you. Please come back.
Had a pretty good time here the other night. The Green Brair features a large bar, ample seating for meals, and a band on most weekend nights. They weren't out of this world, but it was fun to dance around like an idiot for a while... about as good a time as you can expect for a local Boston band shoved in the corner of a pub.
Big props for being pleasantly crowded, but not overcrowded. It's clearly one of the places to be in Brighton, but not so much so that you can't move without accidentally groping someone, or wind up waiting 30 minutes for the attention of a bartender.
That said, this place was a total sausage factory. Not a big deal to me, as I'm attached. But if I was single, I'd probably have one cursory beer, then hoof it to a bar with a better female-male ratio.
Nestled in Brighton Center, Green Briar is an adorable Irish restaurant and pub.
I had the pleasure of visiting GB on a chilly February Monday evening. Reading the reviews of the restaurant, I expected my socks would be blown off with excitement, live music, and a full house. The reality was far from my expectations. Instead, I think we were the only ones eating and two others were at the bar.
The inside reminded me of every other Irish pub in Boston (i.e.: Jose McIntyre's and Tommy Doyles). The lighting wasn't too bad, I would suggest turning the music up a little more.
The beer menu was solid with a good amount on draft. I opted for a Smithwick's, so no complaints. I was super conflicted if I wanted a veggie burger or fish and chips, however the waitress told me the fish and chips were the best, so I went with that. The best? Meh, maybe not. Good tasting? Okay. I enjoyed the french fries more, though.
I have mixed feelings about the wait staff. My waitress was pleasant as pie, which was great. There was another girl (long black hair, maybe she was a waitress, maybe she is paid to lean on the walls and make sure they don't fall down) who kept awkwardly staring at me with a bitter look. I ended up asking her were the bathrooms were and she gave me a super rude and attitude filled answer. Lady, I just had to pee.
So, here it is: although the food was good, I wouldn't come back here. The location is terrible (unless you live in Brighton Center) and there's not much leverage over the Publick House or other pubs in the area... maybe it's better in the summer, though.
The Briar is a great place to catch a midweek drink, lunch, or even  a spot of dinner. They do one of the best veggie wraps (lunch) around. I'm not a fan of the place on weekend nights, it's full of students and loud music and that is no longer my scene. But Monday-Thursday, you can't beat this place for a nice quiet pint and a spot of dinner in Brighton. Their Chicken Curry, Bangers and Mash, and Irish Breakfast (served on weekends only) are my favorite dishes. They have trivia on Tuesday evenings which can break up the week nicely.
The only downer for me is that I wish they had a more IPA selections-Harpoon is all they have on tap and that disappoints me in bars these days. Putting a Dogfish 60 minute on tap, even in bottle form, or a Six Point, and I'd be hard pressed to ever leave!! In saying that, they pour a proper pint of Guinness, the staff are great, they are friendly and chatty, and it's an all round great place. It's my go to place in Brighton for a weekday beer with friends and I very much recommend the place.
Love this place for Sunday Football (as long as the Jets aren't playing at the same time as the Pats) and any night of the weekend. I ordered food one time (usually just go for the drinks and company). The fish and chips were beautiful. The piece of fish was the size of my plate. And the drinks are reasonably priced.
I took away one star for this being a Jets bar. SERIOUSLY?! We're in f**king Boston.
Have you lived in Ireland (for a weekend, a summer or, like me, for a few years)? Then you need to get your arse down to Green Briar to enjoy what I believe to be the closest thing to a present-day Irish pub in the U.S.
Reasons why Green Briar is a slice of the auld sod:
1. Ham and cheese toasties come with real gammon. I don't know how they did it, but they did it.
2. Chips come with vinegar--without even having to ask!
3. Trad sessions Monday nights featuring most of Boston's best and favorite trad musicians; craic agus ceol!
4. The place is always filled with Irish folks, so get in and see what the Irish imports already know: Green Briar is the real deal!
5. The Guinness is as close to great as you're going to get this side of the pond; The Smithwicks isn't half bad, either and the whiskey selection is something to be proud of.
I attended a function here the other day. My feedback:
Service: very friendly and competent.
Drinks: delicious!
Meat: buffalo chicken fingers were apparently quite tasty.
Vegetarian: The cheese and cracker plate was quite lovely, as cheese and cracker plates go. Really, it had bleu cheese and everything. Yum! The vegetarian egg rolls were kind of gross, though--texture and flavor just weren't right.
Overall, a pretty good experience. We would definitely go back. Possibly will adjust to four stars after another visit, if my next vegetarian meal there is better than the first one. I plan to ask them if they'll cook their mac and cheese (which normally comes with ham) vegetarian for me.
Low key is definitely a term to describe this place. Sort of reminds me from McLaren's in "How I Met Your Mother," which, for me anyway, is a compliment. It's the perfect spot to go with a few friends, have some beers, and enjoy some nice conversation. Food is good, prices are fair, bartenders are attentive and nice.
I agree with other reviewers that a benchmark of a good irish pub is that it should feel like an extension of your home. Green Briar passed in my book.
I guess you can call this place a sloppy, hot mess. Now that I am a few years older it has lost a bit of a its charm, but it is still fun to come too every now and again. Â The bartenders are great. Â Jackie, Kevin, all do a terrific job. Â Food is OK. Â The live music is also usually quite good. Â
Oh, by the way, the last time I was here, while waiting at the bar to get a pint, I watched four rather jolly, Irish rugby players order shots of tequila and then pour them into their eye sockets. Â No joke. Â Upon doing a little research, I guess everyone's doing it.
Horrible!
I got sliders and asked for them to be medium-rare and they came out pink in the middle and BLACK on the outside....how do you screw up burgers?
we got a ceasar salad..the burgers..a wings appetizer as a meal and 2 beers and it was 40 bucks...i think thats crazy
no tv, music or anything on....8pm on a fri night?!?
the waiters were more into each other than us
all in all....this place really sucked and i will not be returning
I hadn't been to the Green Briar for years prior to last night. Â Not much has changed which is mostly for the good. Â Cheap beer in the form of $2.50 quick pour Guinness gets high marks. Â
Still a meat market, which doesn't mean a thing to me these days but it's always fun to watch drunk people going through the mating ritual. Â
Would get 4 stars except for the last call at 12:30 and the clear goal of having the bar emptied by 1am. Â I'm guessing that had some problems with their liquor license/neighbors and the city is making them close an hour early. Â Hopefully that will change soon.
So allow me to spin a tale about a guy who went to trivia at Devlin's last night. Â Apparently no one wanted to come and face me, so they cancelled trivia due to a lack of attendance. Â I have this effect on trivia crowds and women in dating situations. Â
So I went over to Green Briar, which had trivia and I had passed in the car a bunch and wanted to try it. Â The trivia was in a side room on folding tables. Â It reminded me of the movie "Boiler Room" except with Stump trivia. Â As if the BPD were going to raid the place, they could clear it out to make it look like mediocre trivia never happened here. Â
I ordered Smithwick's which is a fine beer from a waitress who seemed harried. Â I don't blame her. Â If I worked here I'd be frazzled too. Â Either by the people or the illicit drugs I was using to cope with the people. Â I ordered a buffalo chicken pizza. Â It came and I was non plussed. Â
Yes I know it's a bar pizza, but it should be round. Â Mine had right angles that made me think of high school geometry. Â (Was it a rhombus or parallelogram?) And there was no blue cheese, so I asked for some and it came about 10 minutes later. Â
Overalll, I'm sure this is a great place to come and get drunk and take home an unsuspecting coed for life mistakes. Â However, it's not my scene.
I think the Green Briar is one of the better Irish bars in Brighton. I have gone for brunch, lunch, and dinner and found the selection and prices to be very good.
Their brunch is really good and provides a  nice variety, including traditional Irish foods. Although it can get crowded, I have never had trouble getting a table for any meal.
The bar staff are very good and pour a nice mixed drink. I think the Green Briar was one of the first bars I went to that dumped a pint of Guinness because it was "too cold" - that is impressive!
I also like that the Green Briar has live music. This is also a fun place to go around St. Patrick's Day - if you can get in!!
I went here one night for trivia and will never go back. We could hardly hear the trivia questions - despite sitting 3 tables from the DJ - because of the bad acoustics and everyone else being so loud. That's not the Green Briar's fault, but considering everyone was there for trivia, you'd think they would have shut up!
The food was also not that great. However, the awful experience came when we went to pay our bill.
We started off the evening with about 5 people and near the end, 2 friends joined us. We asked for our bill, but the 2 of them were still drinking and wanted a separate one. Not too confusing.
LONG story short, after much confusion with the waitress because she didn't understand our simple instructions for 2 checks, my friend went over to her to explain what she wanted. Her response? "Your stupid friends confused me."
We ended up complaining to the manager because, I'm sorry - you NEVER call a paying customer stupid to their face, no matter what they request of you. The manager said our next meal would be on him, but considering we'll never go back, that wasn't very helpful.
Add this place to the list of bars/restaurants that have Hoegaarden....on tap. Two stars just for that!
We checked it out on a Thursday night around 7pm and the place was dead. I think we might have been one of five tables. Our waitress was super nice and attentive. She even gave us a booth when we asked (not like there weren't some open anyway).
The food was pretty good! Although they have kind of a weird menu (chicken pot pie that doesn't have a crust but is served over mashed potatoes), what we ate was tasty.
WARNING: If you get the nachos to share, it's a pretty big plate of nachos. I was pretty much full after I chowed down on those cheesy, olive-y, jalapeno peppery covered chips. Maybe it was because I ate too much (which is probably the case), but I didn't have much room left for my sliders, which came with AWESOME fries (another star).
The last star is just because I liked the place. There are murals on the walls, along with Irish signs and it's within walking distance of my friends' house. Definitely a plus.
If I could give 2.5 I would. It's a good place for drinks, but not eating.
The drinks were decent, but the food was expensive as all @*#(. And it wasn't good either. I had the fish and chips, and it was really mushy and blah. The chips were decent. But it definitely wasn't worth $14. My recommendation is to go for drinks and perhaps a side of fries. But stay away from the food.
I found our waitress a little annoying. It's an Irish pub, I don't expect them to be so pushy with bringing us the check. We'll tell *you* when we are ready to go. (I hope that doesn't sound snobby... that's just how it's down across the pond.)
Additional notes:
There is a metered-parking lot across the street (I think the meters go off at 6pm), right near the police station. Also, they had no problem with us bringing a five-year old in for dinner. Be careful parking around the corner, as one of the streets is Allston-Brighton permit parking only.
Food has gotten a little bit better, but they've changed the menu and it's a little more expensive. Â Unfortunately, no more $6 chicken fingers and fries. Â In this case, the more expensive menu and the increased quality pretty much offset each other, so I'm kind of indifferent.
Trivia on Tuesdays is still fun. Â Bob doesn't play trivia jockey as often anymore, but his usual replacement, Will, is pretty solid (though a little cheeseball).
I'm going to give this the good ol' star-in-the-middle. It's not bad, but I wasn't impressed.
They tend to have live music, and usually it's very good. Some of the musicians, however, have a lot of country in their heart and tend to swing into a round of that, disappointing the cover-loving bar crowd. "PLAY MORE JOURNEY!!!" they yell, as they scream the chorus and shamefully mumble the lyrics hoping their mouthing is convincing.
The bartenders are extremely busy, and they let it influence their attitude. Once the night gets going, you better know what you want and know how to order it. No smiles, no jokes, just get your drink I'm busy.
I'm pretty much in love with this place. Â My friends and I were dead-set on catching the 7pm replay of the Chelsea vs. ManU game last night. Â We had our blinders on all day, utilizing maximum self control to not check the score. Â I even called the Briar (after a tip from a Yelper) twice to make sure they'd be ok with playing the game (as it was also a Sox night). Â The manager was super friendly and assured we could turn at least one TV onto the game.
That night, Chelsea vs. ManU was blazing from almost all the TVs, awaiting our arrival. Â The bartender was wicked friendly and poured a darn near perfect Guinness. Â We ordered Nachos and Lime-Lager Battered Chicken Tenders-- dang, both were so freakin' good.
Even though the story has a sad ending (Chelsea lost on PKs after Terry slipped and missed his shot)-- I would totally come back here time and time again. Â Awesome atmosphere (even though it was relatively empty), the place is HUGE, and the decor is pub-erific. Â Total cheers for this bar.
The Green Briar is a typical pub with typical pub grub and typical service. (Did I unintentionally just allude to a Dave Matthew's song? Mea culpa.) The atmosphere is relaxed, the beers are cold and the service is ok. Really this is just a great place to hang out with some friends over a drink or two.
The vibe of this place is more neighborhood bar than "let's go out and get wasted".
I'm a fan of the Green Briar. Â Its a great local pub. Â The prices are good. Â The service is decent. Â The food is good by pub fare standards. Â
My big complaint is the idiot drunks that end up there regularly. Â In an effort to not care about sounding like a bigot, I can't stand drunken Irish. Â I don't want to talk to you or get spit on by you. Â The lady I'm talking to likes it even less. Â Can we please, please, please get rid of this tired cliche?
Funny aside:
I lost my credit card one night there. Â The lady I was with accidentally knocked it into their beer fridge. Â When I went back in the morning to get it , I was asked for $50 to get in. Â $50?!?!? Â At 10am in the morning? Â Apparently there was a soccer match in Europe that people wanted to see at that time in the morning. Â They let me in to get my credit card without a fee though they couldn't find it.
Go on a Monday at 7pm and stay till 9pm to enjoy a great live Irish Session. Anyone can join in. Â 5stars just for that.
The food: Guinness and Irish Whiskey steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. Cooked to perfection and quite tasty.
The Guinness on tap here was equally great.
Time to brush up on my mandolin skills so I can join in on the jigs and reels.
I went to the Green Briar in Brighton for a friend's birthday (her boyfriend plays there on occasion). This place has a typical bar on one side, side down and eat place on the other. We were sat past the bar at a huge group table under a trellace decorated with lights, it was really cute.
For appetizers we got nachos and curry fries (see picture!). The curry fries were really yummy, the curry sauce comes in this cute little pot and the fries were cooked perfectly. The nachos were pretty crappy - the chicken on top was cold, the cheese was barely melted, this was obviously a plate that was assembled then half-assedly microwaved.
For dinner I got the creamy tomato soup, which was yummy but a really small cup portion. I aslo got the Caesar salad which was bogus. It came in a huge bowl, which normally would rock, but since it was a bowl full of the suck it wasn't a good thing. The bowl was HUGE but had only a small base so everytime I went for a bite the bowl would wobble everywhere. The salad itself was pathetic - a huge bed of romaine, bland dressing that was scarce, supermarket looking croutons that were gross, and industry standard fake parmesan cheese.
Also, we got chocolate cake for my friends birthday and it was disgusting. It looked good, like it would have a harder fudge-like consistency. It was rock hard alright, and literally tasted like cardboard.
In sum, the food here is typical, unimpressive bar food that you almost instantly regret eating because it was a waste of money and calories. You should stick to booze if you're coming here.
Wow. Probably one of the worst experiences I've had at a restaurant in the area.
The waitress didn't even look at us, didn't refill our drinks... had someone else put the food on the table... didn't ask us if we needed anything... and was talking on her cellphone.
Food was pretty crappy as well.
Music was bad.
Took forever just to pay and get out of there.
I mean, I guess if you're trashed and have no where else to go, it might be okay.
While I was looking for a venue to play a little Stump Trivia with a new friend, Tuesday nights seemed pretty scarce as far as decent locales or ones cozy enough if you're only going with one other person to meet up for beers and share an intimate round of general knowledge trivia.
Green Briar easily found on Washington Street. While the bar is no real big deal and I'd rate it as average, the trivia night is pretty good. Fairly small group, maybe about 5 or 6 teams of a couple people and you can get pitchers of high life for $10! unless of course...they're out of high life, like last night :-(. Mixed drinks weren't really anything to write home about, they don't keep stoli here and use 3 olives, which is pretty sub par IMO. Think my drink was in a typical 6oz glass and probably costed $7+ which I thought was kind of a rip off.
Honestly, this pub is the cleanest one i have ever been to in Boston. I was actually amazed by how a bar can be kept so neat and in place. This place is not usually packed with throngs of people - at least the 2 friday nights i went.
If you want something fun to do on a friday and still keep it low key: have a decent dinner, watch a red sox game, drink good beers at the cleanest bar in town  - this is the place to be at.
This is one of those times I wish I could give half stars. This deserves three and a half. It's just slightly better than average. However, I fear that people might just look at the star rating and if it's only three, they'll be turned off.
Anyway, I can't think of many places, not even Irish pubs that serve the tradtional Irish breakfast with black and white pudding. (Which, in case you don't know, isn't actually "pudding" as you know it, but sausage. Black pudding being blood sausage, white not having blood but more fat, I think.) Â And they also have rashers (thick bacon) which I haven't noticed on any other menus.
But they have it and it tastes good. I was a little hesitant to to try it, but since they came with eggs, beans, bangers and fries, I figured if they were no good I still had plenty of good eats on my plate. Unfortunately they were good and all that pig left me a little dizzy. Â The beans left something to be desired. They were a little sweeter than traditional Boston baked beans. But come on, you don't go to a place like this for beans, do you?
The burgers are solid, the steak fries do a great job of soaking up the malt vinegar available, and they pour a good pint of Guinness.
What stands out are the chicken fingers which have a great flaky batter on them. And my girlfriend's mother couldn't get enough of their bread pudding. Â (No, bread pudding is NOT bread crumbs stuffed into a sausage casing. I guess they just like to throw that word around. I'll order a Guinness pudding next time and see what comes out.)
They also have a patio out back for those nice days. And on Tuesday there's trivs with the best TJ (Trivia Jockey) in town. Bob, the original.
Update: Bob is no longer the TJ there, but has been replaced by someone who would be better suited to a wacky morning radio show. Â Also, the last time I visited the beers weren't quite cold enough. So I opted for a vodka tonic...horrible mistake. Worst mixed drink I've ever had in my life.
I was struggling to find a bar that was up to par with my old neighborhood pub in Dublin... it took forever but finally I found it in the Greenbriar.
The atmosphere, staff, and entertainment all work to bring a little slice of Ireland to Boston (Premier League, Irish staff, dark and warmish interior) and it's a testament to the success of the bar that the majority of regular patrons (aside from BC students) are Irish immigrants.
The food is good - traditional pub fare with some distinctly Irish items -chips and curry and shepard's pie, for instance. Great menu for a rainy day.
(If anyone from the Briar actually ever reads this, please bring the boxty back. I don't know why you took it off the menu in the first place but it was a bad idea.)
