If you're ever in Central Square but don't want generic Irish pub food or Chipotle, check out hidden gem Green Street. The bar isn't huge, but they serve excellent, inexpensive craft cocktails, and the bartenders are attentive to even the poor souls who get stuck standing 2 or 3 deep at the bar on a Friday or Saturday night. The food is also good even if the menu is kind of limited (usually only about 6-8 entree choices), and so is the service.
One of the biggest ups about this place is that if you arrive after the peak dinner time (usually 10ish), you can usually get seated in the dining room and be served just drinks. This is a great option if you're looking to grab some drinks with friends while actually being able to talk to each other, or if you want to pre-game a little bit before rolling out elsewhere like TT's. For drinks, you can't go wrong with the popular Aqueduct, or, if you're going all-out bonkers, the classic (and strong) Zombie.
Quite loud on a Thursday evening. Â Service was reasonable. Â Excellent bread. Â The macaroni and cheese was well conceived (addition of bacon, peas, and crumb topping) but poorly executed. Â The bacon was the only salt I could taste in the entire dish. Â So whenever I got a bite of bacon, it was a well seasoned bite. Â But when I didn't, there was no salt and thus no flavor. Â Many others in are party were similarly underwhelmed by their dishes; a hanger steak, for example, was done correctly on the inside but carbonized on the outside. Â Portions were quite large.
Review Source:Sorry to rain on Green Street's parade but I was quite disappointed. Where do I start?
Grub: Burger - Â First, they didn't ask me how I wanted it cooked and overall it was slightly on the salty side. Coleslaw was so bland and the pickles were OK. I had one bite of the chips and gave the rest to the boyfriend. Speaking of boyfriend, he had the "Bonchon style wings" and it is definitely NOT Bonchon styled! They were super salty! Trust me, I am like a Bonchon connoisseur. I use to eat it all the time in NYC and at one point every week for a month in Boston (not proud of it).
Dranks - I had the Bohemian which I liked. It wasn't amazing but they did a good job making the alcohol not too obvious and meshing the ingredients well. The boyfriend on the other hand had another Beefeater gin based drink (forgot the name!) but it was way too strong. Â One star for my drink.
Service - It was actually good. Our water glasses were never empty and were asked at proper times if we needed anything. One star for the service.
I'm not sure if I got the wrong dishes or if the cooks had a fiesta with the salt that night but I highly doubt I would come back for the food. I would however possibly come back to give the drinks another chance *shrug*. Peace out Green Street!
After leaving the NYC cocktail scene, I was in search of a new cocktail bar and Green Street was on my list from day 1.
I tried the Alaska and the Bohemian (both gin based) and they were great! Refreshing and tasty! The bartenders were friendly and made great recommendations. If you are looking for a good drink, you cannot go wrong with Green Street.
We also sampled some of appetizers and they were great as well, though I'm not sure if I would travel too far for them. The ceviche was great, but the lobster/jalapeno fritters could have used something else, I'm not sure what though. Overall, it was a great time, with awesome drinks and good food.
I went here for the first time not so long ago and was impressed. The cocktail selection is great, as is the menu. (They serve Mac 'n Cheese as it should be.) The staff is friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The atmosphere is fun but not so loud that you can't have a conversation with someone across the table. A good time!
Review Source:Allright. It's been a while since I went to this place but my experience was so terrible I had to share. Â I walked in with a few work colleagues for a drink and the bar tender refused to serve us. Wait. What? We weren't drunk, and hadn't had a sip of alcohol that night. When I prodded as to why she said that, or if she was joking around she said "See, that's why"
What the heck is that? F this place. No way. Never again.
I want to begin with a simple declaration; I don't get it. Green Street is in a great location and the wait staff is very friendly, attentive and accommodating. Unfortunately the buck stops here, as it were. I began with a Tom Collins with Hendricks gin, the drink had so much sour mix in it I was wondering why I ordered a decent gin. As my starter, I ordered the asparagus salad which was good, the asparagus was not over cooked and mushroom vinaigrette was rather tasty. For my second cocktail I decided to try a house concoction called the Bohemian, another gin based drink which tasted a bit like that pink liquid antibiotic I used to get as a kid. My entree, the Hanger Steak with potatoes and chimi churri sauce was decent at best, I will say my steak was cooked as I had asked; rare. The meal was expensive and I felt cheated. I don't mind paying for anything but it needs to be worth the price and Green Street simply isn't.
Review Source:Cocktails are one of my true great loves, and that's the reason that I love this place. Not as flashy or fancy or trendy as many of the spots that are known for good drinks, but they have consistently excellent classic cocktails. Ask for the full cocktail menu (instead of the short list that everyone gets) if you want to page through a thick stack of some really amazing classic drinks. I love sitting at the bar and talking shop, and the bartenders are able to give good recommendations if you're daunted by the big list.
Review Source:*Where's that sixth star option...*
Oh, Hey! What's up?
Where do I start? The food is amazing. The bartenders are phenom'. They listen to your stories. They know your name. They save seats at the bar if you're a regular. They always have a genuine smile and if they don't (rarely), they make YOU smile.
The best thing on the menu is hands down the burger. Holy Batman. It's the best burger I've ever had. It's juicy and greasy and orgasmic.
There's always a special oyster everyday. There's always a taco of the day. Taco 'bout great food and service. Hehehe...okay.
Give this place a try and you won't be disappointed. It gets very busy, but for very good reasons - Green Street for the win!
We came here late night after a few drinks at Central Kitchen so the waiters graciously sat us near the window upstairs so we could talk loudly without bothering other customers. +1.
We only ordered drinks but it was the BEST I've ever had. If you're into flowery drinks - rose infused, lavender, whatever, you have to try the Bohemian. It was like inhaling a flower the entire night and I happily inhaled two for the evening. My friend ordered the Air Mail (a bit stronger), and slightly more sour but still delicious. She also ordered two gin&tonics after that, so we definitely had a good night. Honestly, the drinks weren't even that expensive (all less than $10) for Cambridge, especially for the quality.
Seriously, this is a must try and you won't regret it.
Great choice for New American cuisine. Everything we got was delicious but the absolute must-order is the mussels (comes with delicious bread and a creamy but not too heavy white sauce). You won't regret it!
The Parisian Orchid was the standout cocktail of the night - we tried a few from the extremely extensive list.
If it wasn't for my friendshipsoulmatetriplet, Sarah D, I would probably never have gone to Green Street. Â There are many reasons why I'm thankful for my friendshipsoulmatetriple and Green Street makes the top three.
I've eaten here a few times and am never disappointed with my food. Â I do wish they had some cheaper options that are easier for me to snack on after a few hours there, but I cannot even pretend like that will keep me away. Â
Where Green Street really shines is their drinks. Â When you first sit at the bar, you will be greeted with a one page menu of mixed drinks. Â I recommend choosing one from here and then asking for the book for your second round. Â That's right people, it is a bible of beverages. Â These are all top notch, well made, and surprisingly cheap. Â It doesn't even make sense that they all hover around the $8 mark. Â For your third round, engage your amazing bartender. Â Karina is my personal favorite. Â After visiting just twice, she had honed in on my exact drink preferences. Â No matter how long it has been in between visits she somehow remembers every single time I go in. Â Custom concoctions are the best and make a fantastic third round.
From there, I would recommend a water and more custom drinks as you get sucked into the Green Street vortex of delicious drinks and holycrapwheredidthetimego.
I started off ordering the Sugar Daddy. Â Pretentious cocktails always mystify me. Â Basically, I saw the ginger beer and mint and went for it. Â The waitress brings out the drinkS and smugly places on the table a snifter of something with my ginger beer chaser and then walks away. Â How the hell was I supposed to drink this? Â It was not at all what I wanted and the ginger beer was weak.
I ordered the seared scallops.  Honestly, you really mess up seared scallops unless you don't wash them.  They were fine.  But, the combination of mashed potatoes, a lemon sauce, sautéed mushrooms, and broccoli rabe (saddest broccoli rabe I've ever seen) didn't make any sense to me.  The flavors weren't complementary at all!  It reminded me of my ex-stepmom's dinners where she would put every veggie that was in the fridge on my plate, and that was her only guiding principle.  It wasn't worth the $$$.
Server was polite, and scene was fun. Â My concern is that the menu is super rich, as in 3/4 of the items have truffle oil, bacon, or roquefort. Â For example the parsnip soup had mountains of cream and cheese in it, it was more like a fondue. Â I had lamb that was outstanding. Â Worth a visit, just make sure your friends can all work with the menu.
Review Source:Well, Boston, you have had one shitty week. Sorry about that. If I were you, and I were in Boston, I'd be going to Green Street. Why? Because I'd probably need a drink if I were you, and this place is classy. Not exclusive or snooty classy, but it gives you that feeling of "well aren't I worth turning heads over?" when you're here.
My only complaint is the very limited bar area and bar seating, and the rather snooty hostess who asked if we had a reservation. We just wanted a drink and she acted like the bar was a lowly place or something. Nevertheless, we eventually got a seat and even when we were standing still had good service. The cocktail menu is reasonably priced, especially for this neighborhood, and the list is diverse. All the cocktails we had were very well balanced and were made promptly.
We didn't eat here, but the food looked and smelled amazing. I could easily see this becoming a favorite haunt in Boston, because it has the cool and good vibes of a speakeasy-type joint, without the suffocating air of exclusivity.
Green Street is a cute restaurant in Central Square. I checked this place out with some of my co-workers on a Friday after work. We pranced into the restaurant with a large party of 12 around 5:30pm with no reservations. The staff was welcoming and acomodated us all without being annoyed that we did not have reservations.
I started off with the ceviche, which was not bad. It was not the best ceviche I have ever had but it was decent. Probably would not order it again. For my main entree, I tried scallops served with truffle mashed potatoes and asparagus. The scallops were fresh and cooked well. The truffle mashed potatoes were delicious, maybe because I am kind of obsessed with truffle.
Overall, the food was good and the prices are pretty reasonable. I do not plan on making any visits, specifically to Green Street, however if I end up in the area and the time is right I would stop by again.
Popped into Green Street on a Friday night with my buddy. Parting was horrible and the place was packed. That said, it's right off the red line and it was a Friday night.
The place was pretty cool and full of 20-30 year olds.
Started off with some cocktails (Preakness and some drink with "white" in the name - both were well enjoyed)
Shared an Arugula salad, which was like an entire bag of arugula with parmesan mixed in. Nothing I couldn't have made at home in about 3 minutes. But a good amount of greens for my colon ;)
We also shared some lobster and jalapeno fritters - which were incredible. Really good. And not that spicy. (I normally like jalapeno only to a degree - and these were good)
Another round of drinks, this time I went with the monkey gland, which was good.
For dinner, my buddy had the blue fish (special) and I had the short ribs. Both were fantastic. The gravy sauce with the short ribs was great - and it was infused into the broccoli rabe, which were pretty great too.
Overall, had a great time. We hung out (like everyone else there) for a few hours drinking and chatting. Good time.
One of my favorite places in Cambridge/Boston.
Excellent cocktails all around. A few of my favorite cocktails were actually invented here, like the Bohemian (gin, st. germain, grapefruit, peychaud's bitters). Ask for the second menu!
The food's solid as well. The lobster jalapeno fritters ($10) are incredible, as is the chorizo taco.
It's an ideal date place, but make a reservation if you're here on a weekend. I usually end up here on weekdays, when it's still kind of busy but more manageable.
I've eaten there once before for lunch, never for dinner until last night with my wife. The cocktails are great and when we're in the neighborhood it's a nice spot to grab a drink, always busy and lively. Good beer list too with some nice, surprising specials.
The food was good. My short rib was just a touch salty but otherwise no complaints. The service was excellent. My wife ordered a special and got a different one instead. No big deal, she let them know and they immediately fixed it, offering to take mine back into the kitchen and keep it warm, giving us the mistaken special they brought us as an appetizer to tide us over. Just really nice and friendly and apologetic. They even comped our first round of drinks! A nice, unexpected surprise. By the time we got the check we'd totally forgotten about the small, harmless mistake. We weren't in a rush or anything.
Anyway, we had a good time and plan to be back.
Come for the booze, stay for the food, and bring your lungs cuz it can get pretty loud when it's busy!
I've been here a handful of times and have always had a good time.
The martini's are strong and cheap!!! Â It's not on the menu but ask for the Parisian Orchid martini ($8)....YUM!!!! It's a little tart, a little sweet, and the strength of it sneaks up on ya after a few ;-)
Food is really good although it feels like in the last 6 months or so the prices have gone up on the entrees. Â Went there last night and had the salmon over sweet pea risotto ($24) and the jalapeno and lobster fritters ($10). Â Both were great!
This is NOT the place to come on a Thursday-Sunday night for a romantic dinner though! Â It's LOUD!!! Â You sometimes have a hard time hearing the person sitting right next to you speaking. Â They don't blare music or anything, it's just seriously that packed with people, all drinking cheap yummy drinks, and it just gets loud lol
I have, however, been here during the week and it was MUCH calmer, more subdued, and totally suitable for normal decible conversation.
I swear it also feels like there's an age bracket for people who come there on the weekends. Â You rarely see anyone under 25 or over 35...it's not overly dressy or snobby...you can come casual or cute, either way no one seems to notice/mind/care. Â I've come for girls night out all dressed up and I've come for casual dinners with friends. Â Seems to always be crowed in front of the bar too so unless you get there early, plan on standing...unless of course, you ask for a table, but be forewarned, I believe you must be ordering food to have a table =)
I've been to Green Street and sat at the bar many times, but just recently went in for dinner. Â I think the atmosphere here is great. Â It's busy and lively, but not too crazy. Â They have good, reasonably priced cocktails and a variety of unique beers. Â
Now I know the food here is also good! Â I recommend coming on Wednesday when they have the taco menu available. Â The place was packed after work despite the pouring rain so it seems there are many other fans of Taco Wednesday. Â I tried the fried pumpkin taco and a fish taco - both were good. Â The star of the meal though was a kale salad. Â
From now on this is a libations and food destination.
Fully deserving 5 stars. Â
Great cocktails with out the high price. Â Large selection of food, two of us had a very hard time choosing, and again, not too expensive. Interior was super comfortable with this great old school New England feel. Â I loved every minute of it. Â Totally glad to have just moved to within walking distance! Â
Steps away from central square red line.
Every time I update my review here, I add a star. Â If I could give this place six stars, I would. Â #yelpcliche
You know you really love a place when someone you care about comes into town and you can't wait to bring them there. Â That's true love. Â And the truth is I love this place.
Green Street has become my home away from home. Â It's the first place I can truly say that I would have no problem coming alone, sitting at the bar, and having a drink by myself. Â Like I would ever have "a" drink here. Â
The bartenders (Jess, Karina, Ray) are just phenomenal. Â Like the best bartenders, they make fantastic drinks, but also provide great conversation and laughs.
The drinks are unusually cheap. Â High end cocktails for $7 or $8. Â It really makes no sense, but I hope it never stops. Â They must make it back on volume. Â My volume.
Hugs and kisses, Green Street.
I went here last night for the first time, after hearing great things and reading rave reviews about Green Street. The first time I walked down this street, I did not even notice this was a restaurant! It is deceiving from the outside, but once you get in, you will be delighted. We initially had a reservation for the main dining area, but ended up staying at a table by the bar, as luckily one was open, and there was a better vibe near the bar. The atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for. The bar was not too loud, it wasn't very crowded (it was a Tuesday night), and it was quite spacious for a bar area. The lighting was a bit dim. I didn't walk into the main dining area, but it looked nice as well, just a bit more open, bright, and calmer.
Now onto the food. I wish I got to try more. The bread was pretty good, the drinks were interesting and delicious (even though I didn't know what most of the ingredients were), and the burger I had... oh man. SO GOOD. I have never in my life ordered a cheese burger medium rare -- that is how I like my steaks -- but after reading a fellow yelper's review, I gave it a shot. It was tender, juicy and flavorful. It came with an array of toppings, each of which I applied. The homemade chips that came on the side were fresh, crispy and tasty. This was all of the food I had, unfortunately. I wish that I could have had everything on the menu. I will definitely be back here, and will try a new thing every time.
See you at Green Street!
Went here for my birthday with my family, the food is amazing. Â I haven't had a burger in a long time so I splurged on the bacon double cheese burger which is hands down one of the best things I have ever eaten. Â A few others at my table order the chicken gnocchi, ribeye and duck. Â There was happy campers all around and had one of the best hot and dirty martinis courtesy of the Saturday bar staff! Â Reasonably priced and delicious!
Review Source:Yep been here a few times now and decided it was time to write a review...
First time I went, we got super lucky and grabbed one of those small tables by the bar. Great ambiance by the bar, and I love watching the bartenders do their jobs. They are quick, efficient, and deliver damn good cocktails. I personally got one with rum, molasses and lime...the kill divil? Very good (note, not a big cocktail drinker here, but it was smooth with a wonderful molasses-y finish)
Second time I went with the bf and we put our name in for dinner. We were told a 45 min wait - totally expected for a Friday night. A little crowded by the bar, but we didn't mind hanging out for a bit. I get word that two of our friends are joining us after we'd been there a while already. I ask if we can change our 2 to a 4....we're in for at least another hour I'm told. At this point, we're getting quite hungry, and so I tell the host to forget it, we'll keep our 2. The friends are on their own for a table!!
Not long after this, said host claws his way through the crowd at the bar to tell us he found a table of four for us, and its ready now. Great service, period. He didn't have to come and find us at the crowded bar. He didn't have to remember who we were and that we were really itching for that table of four. And, somehow, we ended up only waiting an extra ten minutes. Awesome! Even if the food sucked at this point, we were pleased and knew we'd be back!
And let me say that the food totally did not suck. Not even close, in fact, we'll be coming back just for the food as well.
Girls got the ceviche and guys got the burger. Plus an order of brussel sprouts for me. Everything was delicious. Ceviche was super citrusy if you're into that. Burger was messy, cooked perfectly, and served with some lovely homemade pickles and coleslaw on the side. Brussels were a little salty, but I will definitely be getting them again.
Overall, great experience. 5 for the service, 5 for the bar, 4.5 for the food.
Thank you kind host and wonderful bartender!
This place is probably a 4.5 star review, but I haven't had any of the food here, so I'll leave it at 4 for now.
Honestly this isn't really my kind of joint, but for what it is, Green Street is great! It had the largest cocktail menu I have seen in the area but it does NOT have the ridiculous prices that usually comes with establishments with  extensive cocktail menus.
On top of that, if nothing really appeals to you on the menu, the bartenders are more than happy to make something off-menu for you. On one occasion that I requested something off-menu, the drink I received was poorly balanced and much too sour. I brought this to the attention of our server (I was sitting at one of those tiny 2-person tables at the bar area, not the dining area, just FYI) and she took it back. The replacement one I received was far better than the original. Yay for such service!
The most interesting cocktail I can remember having here: I can't recall the name but the bartender gave me this peanut butter cocktail that really didn't taste like alcohol at all! I actually enjoyed it though usually I don't like the frothy drinks with egg whites in them. Â
It can get loud and crowded in here but I've never had much of a problem getting seats at the bar or waiting too long for a drink.
From my understanding, a lot of 'industry insiders' frequent this joint. I think that if bartenders come here to drink, it's a trustworthy place to grab a drink for yourself.
My go-to for post-work drinks, as it's but a few steps from my office. Not really sure why, but I had never been here until fairly recently (within six months?). I'm making up for that now -- in the place nearly weekly for a cocktail and sometimes dinner.
The beer list is limited but terrific. The draughts include local favorites like Pretty Things and Jack's Abby, and often rotate out draughts "of the day," which add some great variety. A list of, I don't know, 25 or 30 reasonably-priced bottles rounds out the beer.
Cocktails are dynamite and easily the best-priced in the area, in my opinion. The bartenders know what they are doing and are quick to do it for you with a smile. Oh, speaking of, get to know them. Very, very friendly and you'll be on a first-name basis with one another soon. Makes for a very enjoyable night of drinks.
The food's outstanding, although a bit on the pricey side, depending on the dish. Not a huge complaint -- I've yet to have something I've disliked. In fact, everything I've tried has been nothing short of fantastic.
Go early if you want a seat the bar; place fills up quickly, especially on weekends (duh?). Oh, and Wednesday night is taco night. Try them all.
The drinks here are quite delicious. Ask for an extended drink menu.
I found a drink on their website that sounded delicious (the Parisian Orchid) but it wasn't on the menu I was given. I asked to order that anyway and it was no problem. The drink was very delicious and well priced, $7.48!
We ordered a bunch of dishes:
Lobster Fritters: Â Tasted more like lobster essence, no actual pieces of lobster. Wouldn't order again.
Roasted Black Pepper Garlic Snails: Very delicious, came with a puff pastry like topping, very good--would definitely get again.
Mussels with white wine: Heaping pile of mussels, the sauce was DELICIOUS. I couldn't soak up enough on the bread. SO WOULD GET AGAIN.
Roasted Tea Duck with duck fat fingerling potatoes and Brussels sprouts in a espresso black pepper sauce: A little too salty, but overall very delicious. Duck was VERY SOFT, and the Brussels sprouts were delicious!
Steak with Chimichurri Sauce: Pretty good, duck was better I think.
Flan: Didn't like the cardamon flavor or the spiced raisins/fruits on top.
Tres Leches Cake: SO FREAKING DELICIOUS!
Green Street has a HUGE cocktail list and the cocktails are good. You'd be hard pressed not to be able to find a drink that you like here.
My favorite was the Masquerade (plymouth gin, absinthe, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, fresh egg white). I also enjoyed pearl white (beefeater gin, lillet blanc, fresh lemon juice, mint, simple syrup, lemon twist). The AirMail (blanc de blanc, matusalem light rum, fresh lime juice, honey syrup, orange twist) was too bubbly for me.
I don't recommend the food. I got an app: the squid ink risotto was WAY TOO SALTY. I figured it had been cooking for a while and it overreduced.
The Fried Yuca and Spicy Aioli was a decent bar snack. Filling, tasty, and cheap.
I LOVE the vibe here, it can be intimate but also conducive to socializing with others around you if you so choose. It can get crowded here on the weekends. Conveniently located only a couple blocks away from the Central Square T. This is definitely one of my go-to places in Cambridge.
Green Street is a great place to go. Â I erased and rewrote the first sentence of this review about ten times, because none of them sounded right. Â In the end I stuck with "Green Street is a great place to go" because it's the most accurate. Â
The food is really quite good. Â Korean BBQ wings are a mite salty, but delicious and meaty. Â The two-taco plate is a perfect few bites to go with a craft cocktail or two. Â Their cheese plate is a wonderful assortment of fermented curd and breads. Â Basically, you cannot go wrong with an appetizer at the bar.
And did I mention the craft cocktails? Yes, they have a beautiful selection of old-timey, new-styley and just plain interesting drinks from which to choose. Â A great wine list and plenty of beers on tap make this a bar for all tastes. Â
Yes, it gets a bit crowded. Â Yes, a little loud. Â Yes, you may find yourself paying a 120 dollar tab at the end of the night. Â But all things considered, you could do a lot worse in Central Square than the darkened eatery/drinkery that is Sarah D.'s love affair known as Green Street.
Everything in my original review stands, except that I have changed my mind and love every bartender here more than any others in the city. Also, I practically live here and that has got to mean something.
And while portion size can still be a bit wonky, now that I've eaten here a lot I've realized that the food is generally pretty damn awesome.
And when I'm broke (which us usually) I can still soak up the ambiance while sipping a $3 Narragansett.
This is my favorite bar.
My go-to happy hour cocktail spot in Central Square. If I'm feeling Venus - I go for the Bohemian, and if I'm feeling Mars - I slurp down a Louisianne. Â But there are so many options... mixologist could go any number of ways.
For snacks - it's all about the fried yucca (or the tacos, if you can time that right).
For dinner - the specials are usually worth trying. The chefs like salt, and so do I, but that might not work for everyone.
Also the servers are extremely professional and fashionable to boot. On too many occasions they've politely and efficiently handled my crew's girls-night-out, high-maintenance ridiculosity. THANK YOU for that, favorite ladies. We love you.
