Green Turtle Tavern is a cute little place in the heart of "downtown" Fernandina Beach. Â The ambiance is adorable and inviting, with the appropriate green light on the porch. Â It's tiny inside, with a couple of cute adirondack-style chairs and the rest of the seating is all at the bar.
My friend and I came here in search of good beer (hard to find on this little island!) and only had one here - all they had in the "craft beer" selection was Sierra Nevada. Â My friend ordered food, but then when we discovered a mini-brewpub down the street (thanks to Yelp!) she decided to cancel her order. Â Ten minutes after she'd placed her order, they hadn't even started to make her food.
If you want a dive bar, this might be your place. Â But it's just your average bar.
This was a fun place!! Â We heard the music and stopped in. Â The bartender was super friendly as were the people around the bar. Â We went outside to listen to the bad and my only complaint (as always) was the number of smokers. Â I absolutely hate cigarette smoke - ick. Â
We played some ping-pong and danced around to some music which was great fun.
I swear, you only see places like this in movies. Max J.'s description is right on - It is not a dive bar. It is totally a hippy bar. It's a little dark, humid and small, and the outdoor area is decorated with Christmas lights, old license plates and sand!
We were severely overdressed entering this bar and had to leave after one drink. We also met a group of drunk women in their 50's and 60's, who tried to follow us to the next bar when we left.
The best way to describe it is: interesting and different. Not sure I'd return. I would wear flip flops and something short next time because it gets hot inside the bar. They have a large beer list and a few different types of wine.
I wouldn't even call the turtle a "Dive". Its more of a hippy bar. Think Jerry Garcia meets Widespread Panic. You'll find it about halfway down 3rd street with green Christmas lights outside. When you walk into the turtle you'll notice the large bar, one or two bartenders and a wrap around deck. outside
If there is a live band it can get kind of loud, but that usually only on the weekends. The turtle is a great place to grab a easy beer, and relax while talking with friends. If your looking for a real slice of Amelia Island make sure to add this to your list.
I give the Turtle 3 stars because they are my favorite bar in Amelia Island. Its rarely too loud/crowded and while minimalistic is exactly what I am looking for in a bar. That being said there isn't much competition in the downtown area. The Turtle will never beat our the near by Palace Saloon in terms of popularity but it will be my first stop on a nightly basis.
