5 stars awarded to GUYS PIZZA with longstanding affection but alas, posthumously
first an important point to set all stuffed pizza records straight: Â they were the first! Â No NOT Giordano's, NOT Nancy's, despite what their revisionist pizza history websites may claim. Â I enjoyed 'stuffed' for the very first time in 1970 from GUYS, my friend Lou and his mom had been customers and introduced me then. Â Was i floored--so aromatic, so deliciously cheesy with plenty of imbedded sausage chunks, and not shy with the garlic. Â A vast bubbling tomatosauce panorama in a tall flaky crust.
GUYS street address then was 4350 W. Armitage Ave, a couple doors east of Kostner. Â By the 1980's they'd relocated to the busy North/Pulaski intersection and in doing so the customer floodgates really opened. Â Second GUYS address: Â 3948 W. North Ave. Â Most who know GUYS PIZZA at all know it here, next door to Ferndell's Restaurant. Â Too much business here perhaps, as 2 of their delivery drivers were shot to death making the rounds in the late '80s early '90s.
But the corner bank there couldn't live without a drive-through window in the new millenium so GUYS & neighbors were shoved out of their best spot, west down North Ave a couple blocks. Â Now very inconspicuous, and unfortunately try as they might these proved to be their final years, but i still loved getting their stuffed pizza. Â In fine Chicago Pizzeria tradition they hung onto the same restaurant phone number nomatter what exact address. Â I tried the named competition but had justified allegiance to the original--GUYS.

Guy's Pizza is the exact reason why I can't/don't/refuse to order from a place that I only know from the circular that was rubber banded to my doorknob. I guess my expectations for pizza are kinda high. It's important to me and I do NOT believe in the metaphor from Threesome (1994) "When it's bad, it's still pretty good." Having said all that, Guy's Pizza was terrible.
This is what an acceptable pizza is: flaky, buttery crust, pizza sauce that's more than watered down tomato paste, and real italian sausage. Guy's did not meet these standards. Their dough was so pasty, tasteless, and pale, my boyfriend threw together a butter/garlic sauce to brush over it. The sauce was bland, amounting to no more than a can of acidic Hunt's.
At least Guy's got the sausage right. I don't think it was real Italian sausage (no fennel), but acceptable nonetheless. I added pepperoni and basil to our sausage pizza and it didn't make a darned bit of difference. It, by no means, have any taste of its own.
I suggest you take your $18.67 and order from John's. (They only take cash on delivery, though.)
I have been ordering from Guys since I could talk. They've been around for a while and even though I feel like they should enroll me in some sort of loyolty rewards program they are still very good. I do agree that they should have some sort of updated system in which the customer's profile comes up with a phone call, but they customer service has been exceptional in the past. They are always very cheerful, nice and attentive on the phone, plus I have never in my 15+ years of using their delivery service, had to meet the delivery person outside of my door.
I have not eaten a large variety of their menu, I usually just stick to their pizzas, which are exceptional. Their thin crust is to die for, the sauce is very  rich and yummy with just a hint of sweetness. They certainly don't miss a beat on cheese which always prevails on every slice!
They would get one more star if the place didn't look so generic and poorly put together. Their old location was very nice, clean and inviting, this new place not so much, hence the star removal. But then again that's why I stick to purely delivery or a slice to go when I'm in the area.
It's not a great place to sit down and dine but definitely consider ordering in one night!
Guy's pizza is good. Â and when we get tired of the $5 one-topping little caesar's across the street, it's a great alternative. Â My one complaint is that their customer service on the phone SUCKS! Â They are pretty rude and like the one person on here, although we've ordered from there numerous times, I always have to give all of my info. Â They do not deliver to your house - you have to come down and meet them. Â The quality of pizza is good, the taste is good, and the price is decent. Â Customer service needs working on.
Review Source:The worst thing my husband and I did this weekend was order from here. Upon perusing GrubHub, we stumbled upon this place and the menu looked decent and affordable enough, so we gave it a try.
First of all the food took the hour they promised, and when the driver arrived, they called the house and had us come down and meet her at the car! Whoever heard of such a thing? The whole point of delivery service is so you don't have to leave your home! So annoying. And my husband brought down his credit card so they could scan it and the woman asked HIM what the total was...uh, hello?!
The food was awful. We ordered potato skins which looked and tasted like the cheese was glued onto the potatoes. May be a case of shouldn't have ordered this item for delivery but who knows. For entrees, my husband had the rib tips which looked all grisly and disgusting, he said they were no good either. His came with mashed potatoes and broccoli-which was covered with cheese. Gross.
I had the Linguine with garlic and sausage/spinach. It was edible but had no flavor. Not memorable in the least. We also split what was supposed to be a caesar salad but it A. Came with no dressing and B. Had carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes and a hard boiled egg on top. Not quite my idea of a caesar salad.
Ugh, still having nightmares about this bad decision. Will not even attempt to order the pizza because these items were sooo soo bad.
Stay away.
When we order pizza delivery, we order from Guy's. Â They have a solid menu, offer the usual appetizers, a range of salads and a collection of entrees, but c'mon, it's a pizza place-- go for the pies.
They offer thin, pan and stuffed pizzas. Â We're habitual pan orderers, ourselves-- since I'm from the East Coast, I will never be satisfied with midwestern thin pizzas, and honestly, stuffed pizzas are just too much for someone who eats three meals a day.
Guy's crusts are flaky and savory with a touch of saltiness from the pan; Â sauce is very nice, too-- a touch of sweetness to the distinct tomatoy-ness and not over-seasoned. Toppings are fresh and generously applied. Â
The phone service for delivery is always attentive, though they do not have a customer database-- as a regular orderer, I still have to give all my information each time I call. Â A pan pizza is always quoted as an hour for delivery and sometimes it is an hour, but on slow weeknights it has been as quick as 20 minutes. Â Predictably busy evenings (bad weather, weekends, sporting event nights) can run the wait up to an hour and twenty minutes.
The delivery drivers are kind and pleasant. Â Guy's has not invested in insulated delivery bags, but relies on an outsized cardboard pizza box to transport your order from car to door. Â If the weather is chilly and the wait is long, I suggest turning on your oven to give your pizza a heat-through while you enjoy your appetizers.
While I do love Guy's pizzas, their appetizers are kind of hit or miss. Â The buffalo wings used to be really good, but the last time we ordered them the recipe had changed, they were now battered and didn't come with blue cheese dressing or hot sauce. Â The calamari isn't very good at all-- flat rubbery strips instead of traditional rings. Â Rib tips are an unusual pizza appetizer addition and good. Â Buffalo strips and potato skins are standard fare and also a good bet.
