Definitely a cool place to grab a brew. Friendly service and an unassuming atmosphere. Lots of firefighter decor. The menu looked pretty good, lots of fried foods and bbq. Beer selection includes some good microbrews and they always have an IPA on tap (extra star).

Small bar but it had good food. First impression was good just a little confused about the Christmas light decor in march didn't really go with the fire fighter theme. The food was good got pork nachos which were amazing, and the burgers were good as well. The beer selection was lacking they only had 4 beers on tap and since I am primarily a beer drinker that is a huge minus in my book. We were the only table At 1400 on a Sunday with 3 guys at the bar so service was good.

After my August update for this place, when I said the wings were not as spicy as they used to be, I was sent a note by someone saying to go back and try the wings again because the sauce had been fixed. I finally did today. The sauce is spicier than in August, probably plenty spicy for most folks, but it's not "fixed" in the sense I would mean it, which would a return to the sauce as it had been before, and in my serving of 10 wings there were five without any sauce at all on them, only one really covered well.

Food was ok. Service was a little slow but I kind of expected that since it was Saturday night. but all in all, the food was good. Nothing out of this world. Drinks were a little pricey though. No running specials or drink of the day when I was there.

The Saturday night crowd ranged from 20s to 50s.  All sorts of different people there. Music is a little loud so be prepared to yell.

A small neighborhood bar with a firehouse theme. Went in for a late lunch and a couple beers. Had a great 'Smokie' ale. Best of all was the BBQ sampler. I had the brisket and pulled pork. The brisket was the best I can remember. Moist and flavorful with a spicy, vinegary BBQ sauce. I recommend enthusiastically the mashed potatoes side as well. Three beers and a full meal was $21 and change (plus tip).

    Solid watering hole!

Great prices on beer and friendly bartenders.  When I am craving a cold beer this is one of my go to places.  I have never tried any of their food but I have tried more than my share of their beers!

Next time you are craving a good spot to catch a cold one try this place.  I actually appreciate the fact that they have super friendly bartenders that help make it a great spot.

I went to Halligan Bar and Grill to watch Monday night football after working late. Yesterday was my first time ever at Halligan Bar and Grill. I was pretty hungry so I order the Halligan BBQ plate. The BBQ plate included Carolina pulled pork with chipotle mac n cheese and red skin potato salad. The menu has many sides, you can choose two. The meal was delicious. I never have high expectations for bar food but surprisingly I enjoyed Halligan food. The Carolina pulled pork had good flavor. The chipotle mac n cheese was very creamy and flavorful. The mac n cheese was not hot at all. The potato salad was good. The cornbread with chipotle honey butter was tasty. For dessert, I decided to try the peanut butter pie. The first bite put a huge smile on my face. The peanut butter pie was amazing. I highly recommend trying the peanut butter pie if you like chocolate and peanut butter. The rail drinks were reasonable priced. The fireman décor inside the restaurant is really cool. The décor really makes the restaurant. The server was very nice and attentive. Halligan Bar and Grill has a nice social atmosphere. The parking is a hassle around the restaurant. The food is better than your average bar food. The restaurant isn't very big.Halligan Bar and Grill is a good spots for drinks and food.

Calling this place a "bar" really doesn't do justice to the excellent food they serve. We were shocked to find a full menu of barbecue, sandwiches, burgers, etc. All of the customers on Sunday afternoon were enjoying food, along with their beers. We each had barbecue (I had chicken, husband had beef and pork) and it was indeed delicious! The side items are just as good as the main dishes, especially the butter beans and potato mash!

I kind of expected their food to be mediocre. It seems like one of those places that is more of a bar than a restaurant, but boy, was I wrong.

I am basing my rating solely on the Pulled Pork BBQ sandwich I had at the RVA B QUE festival last sunday (8/12).

In short? Amazing. The pork was smoky and moist. The sauce was tangy, and a little spicy. But what really makes their BBQ sandwich amazing (in my opinion) is the slaw! Fresh, crunch, and... .is that.... jalapeños in the slaw? I can't tell, but something is giving it that extra spicy kick, and it totally elevates the sandwich to another level.

I had the chance to try the brisket which was also amazing. Very hard to find brisket that isn't dry as a desert, but theirs does not disappoint. It's juicy, tender and full of flavor.

I would definitely go back to try more of their food, and maybe, venture inside!

At the urging of my Concierge, I checked out this place and thought the BBQ was very good. I tried the sampler plate and thought the pulled por and brisket were quite tender and succulent and also got adventurous and tried a rack of Baby back ribs and the meat fell off the phone and had a nice smoky flavor. You can't beat the flat screen TV's scattered throughout the joint! I'm definitely adding this place to my rotation of BBQ joints when I come to Richmond and I am like Adam Richman and always willing to try out new places in town.

The Halligan is awesome. They are definitely one of the top five BBQ restaurants in Richmond. I always order The Federal, which is BBQ, Pepper Jack, and Jalapeños. Good lord that is some good stuff!

My first experience with Halligan's was actually at a BBQ festival (or was it a beer festival?) in Church Hill.  My bf and I purchased samples - He tried a rib while I had some pulled pork.  The sauce and seasoning accompanied with the smoky barbecue taste was enough to convince us to try a full portion.  When we did, we both had the baked potato mash as our sides.  I thought the cook skimped on the sauce, so the pulled pork sandwich didn't pack as much punch.  My bf had the full rack of ribs that he enjoyed but couldn't finish because it was huge!  Our server was pretty nice and the chef delivered our food himself.  The Shockoe Bottom establishment is pretty small, but all of the firefighter decor is pretty neat.  Be sure to check out the bar, made from an actual fire truck!  Thank goodness it was a not-so-busy winter Saturday evening..I couldn't imagine what it's like during happy hour on a warm summer night, though I'd be willing to return!

I have been here numerous times, mostly to the downtown location and I have to say that the FRap is my favorite. The food is good along with friendly staff and a great atmosphere. Good place to go for lunch or casual dinner.

Interesting little two-site chain, one in Short Pump and one in the Bottom. I went to Short Pump location for lunch; it's much larger than the downtown location.
The decor is great! The restaurant honors fire fighters with lots of memorabilia and equipment on display. A real firetruck serves as the bar and you can rent out the top of the truck (the "VIP area") for $50 an hour for special occasions. (A "halligan" is a tool that firefighters use.)  Our party had great service from Jeff, who filled us in on all the nuances of the restaurant in addition to the food. Servers are "rookies," the hostess is the "dispatcher" and owner Shaun, a retired firefighter, is the "Chief." They take the firefighter theme to the limit, and it's fun.
Following a foursquare tip, I ordered the beef brisket, but was disappointed that it was so very fatty. (That's the one thing that keeps me from rating this place with 5 stars.) My neighbor let me sample the pulled pork barbecue and it was much better. He also raved about the collard greens. My fries and butter beans were good. Another coworker liked the barbecue chicken, so the best idea might be to order the sampler platter, which has some of all three types of 'cue plus two sides and cornbread. They also have burgers and quite a few interesting appetizers. The Peanut Butter Pie was awesome! Servings are quite ample.
The bar apparently packs them in on weekend evenings and for Happy Hour. Plans are to open a Virginia Beach location and then maybe start franchising nationwide.

This is an awesome place! The food is always amazing. The decor is really neat; the regulars are always fun to talk to. Don't feed the bartenders they'll bite.

This is a very tiny place and I could see why regulars would like this cozy spot.  The decor was really cool and interesting and gave you something to look and talk about.  The bar had no open seats and there are only 4 or 5 tables inside.

The best part of my meal was the bucket of beer.  Our food took forever to come out (almost an hour) and the server/bartender stopped by to apologize for it once.  I had the brisket sandwich with seasoned fries.  The brisket wasn't hot and was a really small portion.  There was more bread than meat in my sandwich.  Boyfriend got half rack of ribs with a side of mac & cheese and hush puppies.  Hush puppies were good.  Ribs were just ok.  Mac & cheese was terrible.  It just tasted like over cooked pasta with butter and a sprinkled shredded cheese on top.  I wouldn't go back again for the food.  Way better BBQ elsewhere in Richmond.

Amazing Food. Great Service. Great People.

Takes a little while if they have a few people in there though. Don't go when in a rush.

Their bathrooms could use a little work too.

Great memorabilia: all firefighter themed, and some serious BBQ.  Loved the food - got the BBQ sampler which had an assortment of texas brisket, memphis chicken, and pulled pork, along with two sides and Cornbread.  It certainly hit the spot.

The place is small, so I could see how it might get a little crowded pretty quickly.  I went there at 2 in the afternoon the day after Christmas, so can't yet comment on the crowd, as we were the only two at the bar for most our stay.  Bartender was friendly and attentive, prices were very reasonable.

    Definitely will be back.

Great environment with a good selection of meats.  Tried the smoked london broil in salad.  Another person ordered the brisket with mac n cheese and baked beans.  They ran out of dessert so we didn't get a chance to try their homemade pies.  Cool fire engine and real history to the memorabilia.

This is the kind of place where the bartenders all have huge personalities and the guests are their #1 fans. Every time I go, I have a fantastic bartender that keeps me laughing.

It's super small, but not cramped. Kind of weird that the women's room sliding door faces the door to the kitchen, but hey, it's a small space. Always very clean and inviting.

I love the bbq sauce and the drink specials aren't too shabby. Definitely check it out if you're looking for a chill place to have a beer!

We went here with a wonderful Entertainment Book coupon...Yelp Fam, I truly love coupons and discounts! We received $10 off our bill.

I was really looking forward to trying this establishment based on Yelp reviews and my hunger for a great burger! I was not disappointed. The bar created out of the Fire Truck was way cool, too!

We were warmly greeted in the small restaurant by the bartender, who incidentally, was also our server. It seemed that there was a happy hour crew there. But still, there weren't many people at all. The restaurant had a few tables along the wall and several bar stools at the bar. It wasn't the most pristine establishment in terms of cleanliness, but hey, it's a bar and grill in Shockhoe Bottom. We sat near the window with a perfect view of the 17th Street Farmer's Market.

I ordered the burger with jalapeno jack cheese. It came with seasoned fries. It tasted as if Lawry's seasoned salt or Old Bay or some combination was sprinkled on the fries. They were tasty, hot, and definitely fresh, which I appreciated. My hubs ordered the pulled pork sandwich. Now this sandwich comes with their special Halligan Sauce. Hubs doesn't do spicy (don't laugh) so he inquired about the heat in the sauce. The server/bartender was so kind and friendly....he offered a sample of the sauce for us to try. I thought the sauce was deelish! But hubs asked for it on the side. As it turns out, the pulled pork was so delicious, tender, juicy and full of flavor that it was outstanding without the sauce. I loved that! I'm smiling just thinking of that...so many dishes fall flat without "the sauce". My burger was fantastic, perfectly cooked! Well seasoned, juicy, and pretty big! No skinny patty here! Hand formed patties, baby!!

All in all! It was a top notch meal! We even received complimentary hush-puppies with Honey Chipotle Butter. Yum! Service was great and the atmosphere was friendly. Music plays in the background. I want to go back and try other things on the menu which looked great!

Was waiting on my train at the main st station and starving!! It was Sunday so a bunch of stuff was closed. I am so glad I found this place. Amazing interior! I ordered the loaded mashed potatoes, pork nachos, and a piece of a cheesecake.

The loaded mashed potaoes were great very peppery which is what I like. The pork nachos were good but could of been better. The sauce on them was YUMMY!!! But I felt a cheese sauce would have held the whole thing together better. The cheesecake was phenom!! Huge! I don't even think I was able to finish =) The service was great!!  I recommend!!

An unabashed blue collar bar with marginal food.

Go for the drinks, the people, the ambiance, the firetruck inside of the place but be for warned avoid the menu.

I know it is a bar and you should go with your culinary expectations in line with that. However, if you fuck up mashed potatoes that come from a box that takes some serious effort.

Next time I venture here, and I will because that firetruck is seriously kick ass, I think I will try the bbq because that seems to be there forte or better yet I should just avoid the food in general and stick to what this place does best. Booze.

As far as my experience in Richmond goes, Halligan's is tops.  I stopped in on a balmy night (32F), and felt like having some good old fashioned bbq and beer.  Hannigan's delivered.

The atmosphere has been much-raved about, and it is actually really cool inside.  The fire truck behind the bar, the fire hose built into the bar itself, and all the fireman related decor were awesome.  My favorite by far were the fire fighter hats that doubled as pendant lights, what a great idea.

The service was more than friendly, and even as an "outsider" from California I felt welcome.  I ordered the half rack of baby back ribs, that included 2 sides (I chose mac and cheese, and french fries).  They also through in a complimentary basket of the best hush puppies I have ever had.

The baby back ribs were cooked with a great dry rub, and topped with a very delicious house BBQ sauce (just drizzled over the ribs, nothing crazy).  The portion was huge on the half-rack, but I did think they were a bit on the chewy side.  Tasty, though!  The seasoned fries were addicting, and the mac and cheese was also very good.

I just thought the atmosphere combined with good food made for my favorite eating experience (thus far) in Richmond.  I would love to go back some day.

    Oh yeah!

If I were a fire truck, I would park myself in here too. (I would have already made myself into a beer tap)

Had the "Q" sandwich and fries with their signature sauce for dipping.... I will go back before I leave. Signature sauce is one of the best I have ever had.

Cool crowd.... truly a place that is "dedicated to serving those who protect" as the slogan says.

The food is even better than the people, a definite must have if you are in the Richmond Area and are human. I can't imagine anything is short of unbelievable.

By the way, the T-shirt from this place is a classic..... once you see it you will understand.

    Just go.

Definite fan of the interior. You can't go wrong with an entire fire engine behind your bar. (Ask them to run the siren.) It's too cool.

I went here after drinking all day at Belle's Isle. So, needless to say, I was starving to death.

I ordered the Buffalo Chicken sandwich with fries. It was HEAVEN. Crispy, spicy, amazing. The fries were just what I needed to absorb the alcohol. Salty, and delicious.

Definitely come here for bar food!!

This a small, but cool bar.  Every inch of the place is covered in fire fighting paraphernalia, even the lights are old fire helmets.  The idea of the rolled up hose as the bar counter is really cool too.  Draft selection is pretty standard, a couple Legend beers and some Budweiser stuff.  The bartender was noticeably friendlier than typical Richmond drink slingers.

The food was AWESOME.  Seriously, based on how good the pulled pork sandwich was I can't wait to go back to try the ribs.  The sauce sort reminded me of Buz and Ned's but it wasn't nearly as sweet and even better: they don't dump a gallon on the sandwich.  They put just enough sauce so that you can't still taste the smoke flavor of the meat, that's key for me.  My girlfriend got some sort of chicken sandwich with pepper jack cheese that was really good too.  The chicken was tender and juicy just like the pork.  The prices are pretty reasonable too, I think our sandwiches were around $8 each and and the portions are pretty big.  I would say there was probably about a half pound of pork on my sandwich, try getting that at Buz and Ned's.

This is a cool place to have a meal or just to drink.  Like I said earlier, I'm definitely coming back to try the ribs.

Stopped in tonight for sandwiches with my husband and sister... typical neighborhood bar- awesome drink specials, small staff... generally just a small nice place.  My husband got the fried chicken sandwich and said it was the best one he's had in a long time.  My sister got the shaved steak sandwich with pepper jack cheese and onions- also a winner.  My burger was freshly made, had an undertone of barbeque, and was cooked just right.  Even the bun was good- and I usually HATE buns.  This one was toasted... Delicious.

They also have steak fries, covered in what appears to be Old Bay.  WINNER.

Definitely a fan of the BBQ!  Ate for the first time last night and am already thinking about when i'll get seconds!  Only thing holding me back are the dumb high top tables and really uncomfortable seats :(  I usually don't mind high tables but the chairs are just stools and poorly built at that.  I'll prob just get take out :)  Best BBQ though.....seriously :)

I love this place and hit it for happy hour and for lunch on Saturdays when I go to the 17th Street Farmers Market. Everyone is so friendly, and the food is really good and really inexpensive. They smoke their own ribs and the burgers are really good too. I also love the pulled pork sandwich.

When an off-duty fire engine rolls by, they always salute it by turning the sirens and lights on in the bar's engine. The owner found it abandoned in a field and turned it into the back drop and "pump" area for the bar.

Almost everyone who works here, including the owner Sean,is an active duty firefighter. Very cool place run by some of Richmond's finest.

I've come here each time I'm ready to leave Richmond for home (because it's right near the Amtrak station) and every time I enjoy my stay. It's small, central to the Shockoe Bottom area, and has a decent, but tasty menu, with great onion rings, and other apps, and filling entrees and sandwiches. With 3 beers on tap (4 including Bud Light, but come on), I always enjoy the hour or two I spend here before going home.

This place was pretty small, but it actually worked out well because the staff treated us really well.  We dropped in for dinner on a Thursday night, so there were no problems getting us seated.  Parking looked like it was all street parking and parking required a little searching before we were able to find a parking spot about a block away.

We had the Baby Back Rib Platter, The Federal Q, and Halligan's BBQ Pork Nachos.

The meat was very flavorful and tender on all three dishes.  Very good all around.  BBQ pork on top of nachos is a really good touch.  The ribs and the pork tenderloin were very well done.  The BBQ sauce is really good.

They also had TVs viewable from basically any seat in the house.

Cheap drinks, tastey BBQ, and friendly service make this a great place to watch football on the weekend or grab a quick lunch.

The pork BBQ nachos are a great starter and the federal Q is satisying. Only one small draw back, only a couple times they have actually put extra BBQ sauce on the nachos like I asked before cooking.  Otherwise great place and great atmosphere.

This place is right around the corner from Kulture in Shockoe Bottom. It's a small place, yet they fit a fire engine inside! You've got to see it, the pump controls are beer taps! At first glance the menu might look like typical bar food. Once you taste it, you'll realize there is some magic going on in that tiny kitchen! The BBQ is our top choice, and by far one of the best in area. Get the platter and you'll be treated to baked beans, and cornbread that are like no other.

I guess this place is pretty new, because I told a friend from Richmond that I had been here and she hadn't heard of it.  This bar is super small, but it's a good time.  We had some food, but all I remember were the buckets of french fries -- my group got two of them they were so good.  Waitress and the door guy were both a little weird, so I got my drinks from the bar.  Yingling on tap, how can you go wrong?

Tuesday night, I walk in The Halligan. It's a firefighter themed bar, you see, and Patrick's behind the bar. He turns on the siren. Exclaims, "Hey!"

    The crowd joins him, "Hey!"

I throw my hands in the air and join in, "Hey, everybody! Good to see you all."

"Where you been?" Patrick asks me.

"Here and there, my man. Here and there. And sometimes, I wonder how the F I got here. And there."

If you know me, this exchange might seem perfectly normal. This sort of thing does happen to me pretty regularly in the places I frequent.

What's remarkable is I HAD NEVER BEEN IN RICHMOND, VIRGINIA IN MY LIFE.

I was in town to interview for my dream job the next day. I'm taking my time at the Halligan as a good sign. Seems like my kind of town. Very welcoming.
