I usually love this place, as a preface.
I went in there last night like a do once to twice a week. Â I never eat there, mostly because they don't have much that is gluten free. Â One server that was there last night was a serious dick though. Â
My girlfriend asked for nachos and asked if there was any gluten in it. Â It's not a fad or a diet for her, it's an allergy to gluten so we know what does and doesn't have gluten, she was asking about the toppings, but nachos 99% of the time are gluten free with all the toppings. Â He claimed that the tortilla chips may have gluten and he wouldn't serve them to her because he didn't want to basically have a complaint on his hands if she got sick.
Nanny server, basically. Â He didn't know the answer, and didn't want to take the time to find out so he says "no you can't have that".
She orders a salad. Â He says "OH BUT THE BALSAMIC MAY HAVE GLUTEN". Â So instead of finding out by walking 10 ft. to the kitchen and reading the damn label, he just said he wouldn't give her dressing. Â
Okay, so a crappy salad with no dressing, sure.
She has a few bites, because you can't exactly cover up not fresh pub vegetables without salad dressing and enjoy it in any way. Â So she drank her drink and only had a few bites of the salad.
He comes back after a long time of us asking for the check. Â
He forgot about us and claimed he thought someone else had gotten us the check, although we asked HIM. Â
Whatever not a huge deal the Bruins were on. Â
He takes away the salad and said "what too much gluten in there for you? Â You know that white Russian you ordered probably has gluten in it too"
That was IT. Â This dude was an ass. Seriously condescending, trying to be. Â There was no way he was saying what he was saying without realizing what he was coming across as (an ass). Â
This dude is a bartender there....and didn't even know that what she ordered wasn't a white Russian, it was a Nutty Irishman. Â
And treating someone with an allergy like a leper because YOU work in a "restaurant" and have no idea what gluten even is....that is YOUR fault. Â You don't treat a customer like crap because YOU'RE ignorant. Â What are you in high school? Â
So he got a nice fat 0 on the tip, and a note about what does and does not have gluten in it along with advice on how to properly treat customers.
P.S. they don't clean their taplines correctly, the beer is awful cloudy and off, and most of the patrons that go in there wouldn't know the difference because they order garbage beers. If you're into craft beers go to Cask and Vine or order a bomber off the specials chalkboard.
I personally am not a fan of their selection of beers and just go straight to gin and tonics.
I was pretty surprised that Halligan's was rated so high. Â It's a place that I really want to like due to the atmosphere and location, but our experiences have been very inconsistent. Â The food can be decent at times but there have been times I've ordered a burger medium rare and it comes out like a hockey puck. Â Some of the bartenders are pretty cool but we've definitely have sat at the bar for 10 min waiting for the bartender to come over instead of chit chatting with her friend. Â
I'd say the value is mediocre as well. Â My husband and I would get a few beers each plus an app and it's usually $75. Â
I hope that this place improves because I would love to support the local business and not have some chain restaurant go in. Â Additionally, if they end up putting the rumored outdoor deck on, it'll be a cool place. Â Right now, the best thing about it is that it's usually the least crowded bar in Derry on a Friday night so your best chance of finding an empty seat.
We dined here on a Saturday afternoon (2pm) after a gymnastics meet at Pinkerton Academy. The atmosphere was nice with exposed brick and beams. Seating was comfortable.
I ordered an iceburg salad with steak. The steak was a bit tough but it was seasoned deliciously. The seasoning in addition to the blue cheese salad dressing was a great combination.
There appeared to only be one waitress so the service was EXTREMELY slow. Our quick stop for lunch took us two hours. (Others in the group ordered salads and a BLT).
I went to Halligan's hoping to find my new bar spot after recently moving to Derry. Â I have to say, my search continues. Â The service was slow and the food was only mediocre. Â We shared a bbq chicken flat bread, which seemed quite doughy to be classified as flat bread. Â The out of a jar bbq sauce was poured on heavy-handedly. Â We also shared the mixed grill. Â The chorizo and steak tips were yummy, despite needing a little salt. Â The grilled chicken was boring boring boring. Â
What got me was when our check came to $38 and change, we paid fifty. Â Our server brought back $11, a ten and a one. Â Service 101, bring ones if you want a tip! Â $10 on $38 would be excessive, especially for the service we received.
We have gone a few times and always enjoyed our meal. Â I have had a steak which was really great while my husband had a burger which he said was really tasty. Â The last time we went it was for lunch during the week. Â We were the only patrons. Â Our waitress was really nice and had some suggestions on her favorite sandwiches. Â We both decided on the burger. Â Husband got the bbq bacon cheddar burger with fries. Â I got the black 'n blue burger with fries. Â My burger was juicy and well seasoned. Â We will be back for sure.
Review Source:Standard tavern-type menu with feel good comfort food -- burgers, meatloaf, sandwiches, chicken pot pie, mac n' cheese, etc. Â But hey, despite the slow service, I thought it was surprisingly good. Â I had the Oven Roasted Turkey Club, while Briana M. had the BBQ Chicken Ranch Wrap. Â They even carried Hoegaarden on tap (of course I only had one...or two...well, I was never really good with numbers). Â Admittedly, I'm originally from Londonderry and it almost pains me to say it, but as long as you don't mind waiting through the slow service, Halligan Tavern is solid.
Review Source:Went here with a friend for some pub food and beers and we were not disappointed. Â The food was tasty, I had a turkey club, she had the black and blue burger. Â All food came out super quickly, and was the appropriate temperature, good portions. Â There was a Red Sox game on TV, which meant that Harpoon beers were only $2 each, such a bargain! Â
There was some kind of live music going on in the bar area, which we could hear in the dining area too - could talk over it pretty easily so it wasn't any problem.
The only disappointing part of this night was the fact that all of the smokers line the sidewalk outside in front of the door, and you have to walk thru them to get out of the building. Â Would give 4 stars if they made the smokers move away from the door - I went home with the stench of smoke in my hair, not happy about that.
By and far the best Black and Blue cheeseburger I've ever had...and trust me, I've had a few!! Easy to get to; Right off of 93N exit 4 for the rest of you Bostonians who occasionally venture out of the city! In what used to be and old Firehouse this place has a casual and fun atmosphere. The waiters/ bartenders are experienced and they make a mean drink! Cool place to hang with a  group...as I did this past weekend. Great music!! Yay Joey Velucci! I'll be back fer sure!!
Review Source:Like most new places I try, we found this place because the boy was booked to sing there! Â We read the reviews and it looked like a place I'd enjoy so I tagged along and invited some friends to join. Â Thus far the burgers are up there with the best I've had.. they're 1/2 pound on a bulkie and dressed to order so if you're going for dinner... don't eat lunch! Â The regular fries are crisp and have just enough salt, the sweet potato fries were amazing! Â We tried the nachos and those drew a round of applause from the crowd. Â Our friends tried everything from the wings (bring a bib) to the wraps, which our friend "the restaurant manager" RAVED about! Â The drinks are great and despite the fact that there were just two guys behind the bar we never waited on a refill. Â Try the Orange Creamsicle Martini, you won't be disappointed! Â If you're looking for some amusement go with a big group... order your apps and meals at the same time with a drink order, the bartender that took our order (8 people) didn't have a piece of paper, wrote nothing down yet got every order perfect!!! Â Nothing short of a magic trick!
We've decided that this will be one of those places we all flock to when the boy plays so we can catch up, enjoy a great meal that won't cost a fortune and a few laughs and drinks!
Stopped by for lunch and  partook of the Reuben and a Mac n Cheese and both were great lunch items.  We also had the sweet potato fries which were well cooked.  It was better than it looked like it was going be from the outside as there was nothing inviting and the place was empty due to the time of day.  Satisfying and the right choice for what we saw in the general area.
Review Source:i have been here twice, the first time it was around 10:00pm and it was dead so we left, the second it was late on st pattys day, irish bar means should be a good time....FAIL all the bartenders are dudes, need some females pouring drinks, and while waiting to get a drink the bartenders were actually texting behind the bar, i no its a long day and all  but please text on your smoke break, Everytime my buddy would order a drink  the bartender would go to the other side of the bar to make it, after the first drink tasting funny my buddy went to the other side of the bar and watched him pour, it was some cheap lable crap. we called him out on it and he said o i am sorry we ran out of that hours ago, thats great maybe you should tell us that before you make the drink
Review Source:I have to give this place an in the middle review as I think it really depends on what your looking for out of your evening out. Looking for a local bar? Stop in. Looking for a sit down quiet atmosphere? Keep driving.
Now of course I am taking into account that they stop serving dinners by 9pm and they then turn into bar mode. However to think that one couldn't be seated for such at 8-8:30pm is off to me and the acoustics made it loud even upstairs.
Okay, so no big deal. I can roll with it. Ordered food off the bar menu to make it easy. The disappointment was nearly crushing (I can still remember how strange the cheese on the poutine tasted. Damn, I love poutine!). I was too scared to say anything, even when our waitress asked if it was okay, for fear that the Andre the Giant looking host/bouncer/what was he? would come and punish us. I wouldn't normally feel the need to say that, but he wasn't exactly the friendliest to be at the door. **please don't let him read this! Or give me warning so I can hide!**
So what saved this place for me? My awesome waitress who kept those martini's coming! And by the way, the caramel appletini's are the best in town.
Yum yum yum. We found this through Yelp reviews and GPS. We stopped after skiing and only the bartender was there. The waitress I guess didn't show up but the guy was really hustling and nice. He was a little scattered trying to greet and take our orders but he did a good job. We sat in the bar so we were close to where he could see us but it wasn't a bad atmosphere. They have plenty of tables around a huge bar and clean bathrooms. Always important.
My family ordered three burgers and a wrap and I had the baked hallibut. The french fries were so good. The prices weren't too bad but they seemed a little more expensive than some of the other area restaurants. It wasn't any more than any restaurant in my area but I'm pretty used to "nice pub" prices. I was happy with the fish and it was very fresh. The only complaint was "grilled veggies" translated to three mandolin slices of grilled summer squash. Three slices. That's kinda lame.
Parking was iiffy because it was street and maybe a private lot but there was a lot of snow everywhere. I'd go back if I lived near there for a game or drinks but wouldn't make it a destination.
Thanks you to the folks that brought us the Halligan! Â The folks here provided us with some excellent service. Â We were in a party of 10, and they were able to accommodate us at some table upstairs.
The beers, well can't say enough about the selection. Â Well Done!
The food. Â It is very similar to what you would find on an Irish Pub menu. The portions are large! Â I had a Reuben, which I was able to split with my wife. Â Which was fantastic as we were able to share some apps with the rest of the group.
I have gone back for lunch with a client, and sat downstairs at the bar. Â Got a burger, which was awesome, cooked perfect! Â It was not loud, so we were able to carry on some business talk.
Having two experiences there, one business the other pleasure, I will certainly be going back there. Â It will be a local stop on my route from now on!
I had a weekday lunch with my daughter a few weeks ago. Â The food was fantastic. Â The service was good, which was easy as it there was hardly anyone there at the time.
I had a salad with fresh tuna. Â It was sliced so each bite included the spicy, crisp crust and the soft, rare interior. Â Yum! Â The rest of salad was equally impressive, with a unique combination of textures and flavors. Â
My daughter had a sandwich with spicy chicken, caramelized onions, and  melted cheese, which was also delicious.
It's more expensive than other lunch places nearby, but the food was worth the price. I hope they add a website soon so you can read the menu. Â I haven't found this type of innovative food in the area, and plan to happily go back for dinner or lunch.
The Halligan Tavern is a nice addition to downtown Derry (which ain't saying a whole lot, but that's OK). Â Went there a few weekends ago with my boyfriend and it was a GORGEOUS spring evening. Â We were seated in the dark and loud bar area, which was alright, but I would have preferred being in the light of day (as glorious as it was). Â Next time I'll request seating some place else. Â I got the grilled salmon, which was delicious, and my boyfriend got the mac & cheese, which they spiffy up pretty nice. Â The service was decent. Â Atmosphere at the bar was loud and fun, just not what I was seeking. Â Waitress was attentive enough. Â The prices are more steep than they should be for the quality of food, though some would probably disagree. Â Will probably head back, but most likely just for drinks and apps, not a sit down dinner.
Review Source:Ate there last night and loved the food and atmosphere. Â Mussels appetizer was different and great. Â My wife had the tuna that had the hottest wasabi ever. Â My shrimp and steak skewers on grilled summer squash were awesome. Â We'll be back often.
Did I mention i mention the 24 beers on tap?
A great new pub /. tavern in Derry. Nice interior. 2 floors. We ate downstairs in the room closest to the door. KEEP THE front door closed! It is FREEZING!
I was cold the entire time. Does the heat work?
The inside is nice. Exposed brick and big doors that open up to the street (summer).
The menu is an array of burgers, sandwiches, salads, fried pub fare and seafood.
The fried calamari w/. vinegar peppers was decent. A bit oily. Good sized portion.
My burger was good. Thick cut bacon on the burger, made it kind of tough  and salty.
The fries were piled high and over salted.
Very good beer selection. They have Tuckerman's on tap! Yay!
I hope they have live music here!
Ate at the bar here the other night. A very spacious bar with lots of seating around it. There were about a dozen beers on tap, including some local microbrew options. I had the grilled chicken sandwich. The portions were large but tasty. My friend got the chicken club which was ridiculous in size (unnecessary too). Who needs a triple decker sandwich that is three times the size of your mouth??!?? Prices were reasonable, considering the quality of food. Overall, a very good pub experience.
