The bartenders here have always been nice. Â The pizza is good. Clam chowder isn't bad either. Â Certain items lack flavor like the chicken parm sandwich. Â But the buffalo chicken nachos are sizable and good too! Â Nothing here is going to blow your socks off, but it's easy to find on Hancock St in Wollaston.
Some specials going on now -  Until 4 pm they have a $5.99 special for a sandwich, fries and soft drink.  Or  from 2-4 pm, a $2 cheese pizza with $1 toppings with the purchase of a beverage.  Hard to beat!
The Hancock Tavern has some competition now with Assembly opening up down the street in North Quincy. Â If you want to save a few bucks or avoid the crowds, definitely come here.
Food is solid, steak tips are very good, buffalo chicken nachos are well done, basic and lots of chicken, nothing fancy, better than solid bar food, they'll cook a scallop about 6 different ways! Â Seating is mostly booths and high tops, bar is usually busy, good spot to meet friends and have some cold beer. Â Service is excellent except he kitchen can be slow at times, sometimes VERY slow which I the only reason for three instead of four stars
Review Source:Visiting Quincy from Connecticut for a Drum and Bugle competition at nearby Veterans Stadium, we took a short walk down the avenue to see what we could find for dinner. Â Other than a pizza joint and some fast food joints, we poked our heads inside Hancock's and find a brightly lit bar, with a bunch of TV's, and some outstanding looking food on the tables we passed by. Â Our decision to stay was an easy one, though it may not have looked that way from the outside.
We had three adults and a young teenage girl with us, and we were very comfortable with her dining there, and even more so after finding the food was outstanding.  Among our dinners were Fish and Chips, Chicken Marsala, Roast Beef grinder, and a house special burger.  All were delicious, including what was referred to as award winning NE clam chowder.  One in the group had recently attended the Tall Ship festival in Boston, and though he preferred my chowder to any in their contest, he agreed with my finding that Hancock's was excellent and worthy of the label.  We enjoyed the beer choices, martini and excellent service from the staff.  Our server was Sara, and she too was outstanding, very knowledgeable of the menu, bar features, timely, and very pleasant.  She noted that everything is fresh, not frozen, and  we certainly enjoyed everything that we ordered.  We have friends in Quincy, and will certainly share our experience with them.  We just may be back again next year for this event, and it will not be a surprise if we return the Hancock's.
Great neighborhood hangout bar, and not bad for a bite to eat. Skip the pizza, but the reuben, hot dog plate, and scrod are all very, very good. The steak tip salad is also very good. Â If you sit at a table, the service is probably going to be pretty slow, so aim for the bar. Â John the bartender is friendly and fast.
Review Source:I go to this place every once in a while and it's usually pretty decent. But last night I went by to grab dinner and got the baked scrod dinner. It was overcooked and the corn that came on the side was cold. the breadcrumbs on the top were burnt and my friend who was with me is a restaurant manager said that it was questionable to serve that plate when it was that burnt. I didn't complain because frankly the bartender never asked how it was. He was more concerned about my beer refill.
If you go here, get a burger or pizza or some fried seafood (simple orders) and save yourself the stress of a bad cheap dinner. The guy in the kitchen aint a master chef.
WORST SERVICE EVER! I
came here with my boyfriend on Sunday night and only one waitress was working - wasn't too busy anyways. It took the waitress about 10 minutes to bring us menus...fine she was busy.
We ordered drinks and nachos and by the time the nachos came out we ordered our meals- sandwiches- nothing too crazy. At that time, I had noticed 2 other tables get seated.
We ate our nachos and chatted...and kept chatting...and I soon stopped eating the nachos anyways because they were burnt and gross....and kept chatting...and waiting...and waiting!
45 minutes later I realized that the 2 tables seated earlier had just been served there food! Our waitress didn't even come over and say, I am sorry it's taking so long we ran out of this, were running behind, whatever- any sort of acknowledgement would have been nice.
Finally my boyfriend went up to the waitress and asked for the bill so we can pay for the drinks and nachos. When she brought it over she said "Sorry , its ready now but here " and proceeded to hand us our check and she walked away. if the food was ready, why wouldn't you wrap it up and bring it with the check and comp the meal?! I am kind of glad we didn't end up eating it because I probably would have ended up with food poisoning.
I moved into the neighborhood a couple of months ago and have been to this bar twice. Â
I ordered the fish & chips the first time I went. Â Nice, generous portion. Â The waitress offered both onion rings and fries. Â The batter on the onion rings is phenomenal.
Last night I drank a Black Velvet beer with a President's burger (Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato) was pretty boring and not presidential at all. Â I asked for BBQ sauce to see if it would add a little zing and it didn't. Â The bread was toasted, next time (if there is one) I'll ask them not to. Â It was hard and the bacon was almost burnt.
Again, the best part of the meal were the onion rings. Â
I'll keep coming back since it's less than a five minute walk from my apartment and the prices are very affordable
Local joint with some scary middle aged men looking at all the younger chicks. Â We chilled in the corner, enjoyed the company of our group but going alone, might be awkward the first few visits until gaining that 'regular' status. Â Everyone was having a good time, reasonable prices and plenty to select from at the bar.
Review Source:I recently moved to this section of Quincy and if I were to pick a bar in walking distance of my house that I thought would be worth going into it would be Hancock Tavern. Â
My newer roommate suggested it one evening when I said all I really wanted for dinner was a burger. Â We walked from our apartment and were seated right away. Â The guy at the door was very pleasant and hospitable. Â There were alot of regulars there from what I could tell but it only made me kinda want to be a regular. Â There is nothing like walking into a bar and everyone saying hey and your beer is already being poured for you...
Anyways, I did end up ordering a burger. Â They have a large selection of burgers to chose from and they all sounded great but I ended up get the choice with 3 kinds of cheeses. Â I wish I could remember what it was called sorry. Â The food came out in good time and the burger was great. Â It really hit the spot. Â It's nice to go somewhere craving something and get just that.
The only thing I will complain about is our waitress that night wasn't very attentive at all. Â There was a time where we couldn't locate her for 10 mins anywhere in the front of house. Â Later when we were ready to get the check, pay and leave, she was busy sitting at a table with a large group of guys chatting away with her arm around one of the guys. Â We actually asked the other waitress nearby for our check because we didn't want to sit there any longer. Â I won't not go back just because this one girl thought it was more important to canoodle with her boyfriend during her shift than take care of her tables. Â The other waitress took care where she didn't and the rest of the staff was great.
Rather than posting the same as both Kerry G and Robert F let me say that the review of steffie b is incorrect and should be ignored entirely. Everyone has a right to their opinion though. I am not from the South Shore or even a Quincy grad. I've never felt like an outsider here. Sure i've seen a few creeps but hey you're gonna get that in any bar. Try it again. And they have $2 bar pizza from 2-4 mon-fri. Seriously? Buffalo chicken pizza for only $3? Yes please!
Review Source:i actually really like hancock and part of the reason is because of the random collection of people. i totally have to agree with robert s on this one. yea, there are some creepy dudes but honestly you're going to find that anywhere (i know there's one guy in particular that i just stay away from because he stares like crazy). i don't think that everyone there went to quincy high either... i know a bunch of people that are from all over the south shore that go there (inclusing myself). just sayin'.
clean bar. great place to go watch a game. realllllllly good bar pizza. *if you go during 2-4 on week days, pizzas are $2 with $1 toppings! i'm a veggie so i can't comment on much else food-wise but my friends have liked everything they've had there.
So when other reviews of this bar say that it's a local place, they mean LOCAL. Â I recently moved to the area and came here after scoping out some local bars on Yelp. Â My friend and I (two very social young women) were literally stared at by people in the bar. Â We asked one of the bartenders what was up and she said that everyone there went to high school together, so they all know each other.
People legit whispered about us. Â Very. Â Obviously. Â No one was rude persay but it was mostly just super awkward. Â We even tried talking to a few people but they seemed scared to be seen talking to the new people.
Conclusion: Decent looking bar, but unless you were born and raised in Quincy, you are not going to want to go here. Â See my other Quincy reviews for better options.
Hancock Tavern is a small bar in Wollaston. Â It's cute! There are booths inside that makes it rather cozy. Â I went on a Wednesday night, so it was definitely not very alive. Â There are some regulars in there watching a game. Â About $6 for a mixed drink. Â They serve food too, but I didn't get any that night. Â The place seems like a pretty chilled out place if you just want to go somewhere to hang out.
Review Source:If you like Keno, Scratch Tickets, booze and TV, this is a good place to be! I'm not a big fan of gambling so I can careless of the lottery; but I did my share of scratching and picking numbers since my friend didn't want to leave me out.
We had stopped by for some after dinner drinks not realizing that this was a happening place. The bartender knows what she's doing and doesn't not let anyone mess with her! Thumbs up for that!
I've been here twice and I really like this place. The environment tends to be loud but everyone is just talking and having a great time from what I can tell. The food is better than average. I had the chowder and a Reuben on one occasion and some 'bigger than your mouth can bite' special burger on the other. The chowder was actually quite tasty. A nice thin, but not too thin buttery, creamy base with nice chunks of potato and clams with no sand. That always impresses me when people actually clean their clams. (Though I don't know if they make it there or buy it, nonetheless it was good.) The Reuben wasn't as thick as it could have been, but delicious all around. (I usually judge places on how well they can make a Reuben sandwich and the Hancock Tavern can make one pretty well.) The special burger, called The Cowboy Up, was a buffalo-bleu cheese type number that was huge. This is a two-handed operation we're talking here. I love the fact that they let me get it cooked Medium-Rare as I think anything cooked more than this is a down right crime, so plus on them for allowing that. The only drawback of it being so loud was that my order of fries was wrong and I got onion rings served to me instead, but the waitress had no problem getting me the fries I wanted, and did so without any attitude what-so-ever.
The beer they have is limited to generic type usuals, but the price can't be beat. $2.50 for a pint draft is ridiculously awesome so that combined with the good food equals a satisfying bang for your buck ratio.
If I lived closer to Quincy I'd definitely be a regular.
Hancock tavern looks nice on on the outside and is a pretty standard bar on the inside. They keep the usual beers on tap, nothing exciting. They do a swift business so it's usually somewhat crowded in there at night due to the cramped space.
They offer a typical bar food menu, and what i've had there has been sub-par. I am usually a fan of bar pie style pizza. You know, small, Mama Celeste inspired greasy goodness to even out your beer buzz? These don't satisfy. I don't know why, and i'll admit it's kind of a crazy idea, but somehow this place makes bad bad pizza, as opposed to good bad pizza. Also we had some kind of dip that i don't remember anything about. I can only guess that it was dippy.
They do have a backyard area that is nice in the summer. I don't even know if there are tables out there, but it's a nice place to stand around and drink outdoors, and smoking is allowed out there.
I went here yesterday for the taping of the Quincy Public Access cooking show phenom, Tasty Licks and was pleasantly surprised. A few people clued me into the fact that this place went through a major overhaul a while back and from the descriptions of the old place, I'm glad I didn't see the "before."
Pretty much a typical pub - bar seats a fair number and the stools are comfy. They had about six brews on tap including Pumpkinhead, HoeGarden, Long Hammer, and Bass. I had to have (of course) the Pumpkinhead. My goal each year is to drink pumpkin beer to the point where I'm sick of the taste (usually mid-November)...and then, by the fall of the following year...I'm back on track and ready for more! We ordered from the regular menu and I settled on the grilled cheese.
There were 5 of us...and all 5 meals didn't come out at the same time. It was slightly annoying only because you didn't want to start eating before we all had our meals, but when you have a grilled cheese congealing in front of you and people are getting their orders one at time every 5 minutes or so...and said grilled cheese came out first...I had to dig in or eat soggy bread.
The grilled cheese was pretty good ($4.95 from the kids menu - score!). It had fresh cheddar on a nice, thick white bread. But the best part...were the fries. They were some of the best fries I've had in awhile. They were the big, thick cut kind...with a crunchy yummy shell. So good.
I know this isn't what people read these for - but the bathroom was exceptionally nice. I mean, you just don't think you're going to find yourself walking into the cleanest of bathrooms at any type of bar or pub...but heck, the place even smelled like it had just been cleaned. I was really impressed. A clean bathroom says a lot about an establishment in my opinion.
Anyway - a nice little place to grab a few beers and have some good eats. Solid.
The only thing lacking at the HT is a dropslot for my mail.
I've been a regular at the Hancock since Noah had a boat, and feel comfortable and welcome there. A great pub menu..plus some incredible meat loaf and specials...whether it's Rob or Andy at the helm. These guys do magic in a small kitchen.
The clientel is well... 'interesting' (to say the least) and, for the most part, friendly, local Quincy folk. I'm a day-sider, but took a date in one night and it was a frigging zoo. The jukebox pushed us out, as it is just too loud for the size of the place.
Great staff, very friendly, attentive and upbeat, but, as in any place, a few acceptions, but, hey, that's gonna happen..people are people, behind a bar or not.
I always recommend it others and now, my son, the next generation, takes a seat next to his 'ol man at The Hancock. Great job, fun place.
This is really a 2.5 star review, but (as Im sure you know...if you dont well then..wtf?) I dont have that option.
I've been going to the Hancock for a few years now as some friends of mine live in the NQ area and for a while it was a great place with decent folks, hot bartenders (yes, I said hot...deal with it!) and really good service, but my last trip there on 6/26 was just terrible.
Myself and 3 friends arrived around 11:45 or so and the place was pretty empty as is prone to happen around 9:30, but for some reason the music was amazingly loud. Amazingly loud. We sat at the bar and it was incredibly filthy. As in this bar hadnt seen a wet towel in 3-4 hours and that just drives me crazy. The bartender was a crusty asshole who really didnt give a shit. We ordered drinks after he turned to the 4 of us and said:
 - "You all set?"
-Gee...let me think. Im sitting at the bar and there's nothing in front of me so Im gonna say no.
He plopped the 4 beers down and went about his business. A few minutes later 4 young, african-american folks walk in, are carded at the door and let through. Well they went to order drinks and for some reason Mr. Crusty Prick decided to hassle them and rattle off some bullshit about needing 4 ID's for 4 drinks when they've already been carded. Ugh. Well naturally the youths disagreed and at the drop of a hat the barkeep told them to take a hike. Said youths took their case to one of the managers who asked the keep why he wouldnt serve them and he had no legitimate answer, but again said no drinks. It was just incredibly rude and basically racist.
The place has gone downhill over the last year which is probably why we dont go there anymore. If you do go then choose a weeknight.
Why don't people like this place more? I've only had awesome experiences here. The food actually transcends the bar food category, especially the burgers; the drinks are super cheap; and the service, well, it's nothing special, but it's nothing worth complaining about. I honestly really like the food here -- it tastes super yummy, and the portion sizes are fantastic, especially considering the price. I don't know or care if this is a "townie" bar or whatever -- just go on a week night, get a booth, chillax and stop being the d-bag who judges strangers based on how awesome you think you are. It's honestly the perfect neighborhood spot to have dinner and drinks with friends.
Review Source:Hancock Tavern? Â More like Hand Cock Tavern. Â I went in here and this gruff guy put his meaty paws all over the outside of my non-alcholic Shirley Temple and had a laugh. Â I spent years fighting this disease, not to be harassed by some goon at the Hancock. Â I honestly didn't know what to think when I got here. Â There were bros all over the place. Â The food is beat, if you're all about the taste of things then I wouldn't consider this place. Â If you want something awesome like dudes with popped collars, girls with $3 hair dye jobs then you should definitely pop into this joint. Â I promise you'll love it. Â I don't know what else to say, for once I am at a loss for words. Weak.
Review Source:The Hancock is, as Yelp's 3-star rating says, A-OK. It has beer, decent food, big TVs with the local games. Service is friendly enough, prices are pretty low. It's a good bar, and it's down the street from my house. I enjoy coming here.
All that said, if I didn't live down the street, is there any reason I'd come here? Probably not. I'm also disappointed that they don't serve Guinness on tap (they do offer it from the pub draught can though, and for cheap, so it's some consolation).
I usually try to have dinner here once or twice a month, and let me tell you...it never disappoints! Food portions are huge and the martinis are very reasonably priced and delicious. Â The only complaint I have is waiting time for the food to come out can take over 1/2 hour, but at the same time, it's usually worth the wait. Haven't been here this month...will probably go tonight!
Review Source:Nikki,
My encounter YET again with you yesterday evening was nothing shy of the unprofessional-ism you have marked as being your signature trait. Reread my last review which entails CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. Realize the fact that while here and there on Yelp there are few individuals who utilize this site to "trash" businesses, many business owners use this site as a way of keeping tabs on what it is they can do to improve their business. My reviews are aimed primarily at doing such.
Walking up to a paying customer, who invited five other guests to a business you work at, and are clocked in, and taking the liberty to vent your disapproval is utterly unprofessional. It was "classy" of you to confront me on it, but sadly showed you took that review far to personally.
I don't know you from a hole in the wall, I have never met you aside from being a patron at H.T. so there is absolutely no explanation for your peculiar demeanor. Take the lesson you should have from it, work on your customer service skills, don't internalize it or take it personally, and GROW UP. Hopefully their will be consequences for your horrendous attitude and demeanor while clocked in a H.T., because everything with the exception of your lack of maturity and customer service is what keeps me a paying customer there. Realize also this: I go to H.T. paying for service, food and drinks, along with that I bring additional business with me most every time I come, myself, along with the individuals I bring with me are a contribution to what continues you to have a pay check at the end of the week. And personal issue or not, the guest who tagged along with me were both amused and appalled at your uncouth demeanor.
The bar style pizza is probably one of the best kept secrets in this part of North Quincy. I've tasted a plethora of variations to be surprised each time; the taste, texture, and crust has strong consistency. The service is a bit slow, but the flavor of their pizza is worth the wait. The drink selection is decent, the atmosphere is vibrant. It can be loud at times, and I've noticed a # of police officers in uniform there, which seems a bit odd, but no worries.
Review Source:My boyfriend and I love this place. Â Really love this place. Â Just a great place to come, have a beer (they have a great selection) and eat some really good food. Â So far we've tried the burgers (my boyfriend swears they are the best around), the steak tips (which I love love love---nice and charred around the edges---just the regular ones, no fancy sauces), and the pizza (which was crispy, but not too thin--delicious toppings). Â The interior is cute (wood panels, booths & tables) and has enough TVs to satisfy any sports fan. Â Service was wonderful... drinks quick, food quick, check quick.
Review Source:I really like this place! It's definitely worth checking out if you live in the area and want to catch a game, some drinks and a casual bite to eat. Lots of TVs, better than average pub food, nice atmosphere. I've never had a problem getting a table here, even though the place is usually pretty busy.
Service is a little spotty, but usually decent.
I'll definitely be back.
This is a pretty decent place to go if you live in the Quincy area and just don't want to hop on the subway to Boston. I've been here a few times, and both the food (french fries are great, as is the pizza!) and the drinks were served quickly and are reasonably priced. I definitely wouldn't seek out this place at all, but if you happen to live nearby (it's within walking distance from my place) it's not a bad place to go to relax after work and have a beer.
Review Source:The Hancock Tavern is a really great place to have a few drinks if you live in the Quincy area. Â My friends and I go there all the time for Sox and Patriots games, as they have 8 or 9 plasma/LCD TVs around the entire bar, and they play the sound from the games over the loud speakers.
Their food is just your average bar food, nothing terribly exciting but it'll get the job done if you're hungry and the kitchen is open. Â They have a decent variety of beers on tap, and also are pretty heavy handed when making drinks. Â If you're going out with a bunch of friends, and you're not afraid to get your hands dirty, the "Draft Vessel" is 160 ozs of Bud or Bud Light for $25, definitely one of the best deals you can get.
There's plenty of parking, and its usually not terribly crowded inside. Â I'd definitely recommend you show up early for Sox and Pats games, though, as it fills up pretty quickly.
I'm not from Quincy, but get the impression that this is a townie bar. Â That's not a bad thing, it just seems highly populated by Quincy locals. Â Very very low key (guys in sweatshirts and jeans) although some girls def were dressed up. Â The decor is mostly all hardwood and surprisingly bright. Â They do pour a nice big glass o wine (and it was a very very good chianti), so I was happy to overlook the dried up buffalo wing crumbs on our table. Â Their kitchen closes early, kids..10pm so eat before you go.
Review Source:Hancock Tavern is conveniently located in the Wollaston section of Quincy, Massachusetts. Â Where the former Well's Pub stood (a place you didn't go, unless you knew what you were stepping into) is now a very inviting place known as Hancock Tavern!!
Well's was way OVERDUE for a make over, so when two long time friends and co-workers with more then 15 years of experience in the Quincy restaurant and bar scene started on this project it was almost destine to be great!!!
HT offers up some classic pub favorites and is a great place to meet up with friends and co-workers to have a few drinks.  The  mood is very relaxing and fun, the waitstaff is very pleasant too!  6 huge 55'' plasmas make watching the game here fun and they also have a jukebox with a wide selection to choose from.
Offering up the classiest (and possibly the cleanest) bar in the city and with fast service, friendly wait staff, and delicious food, you'll be satisfied with our bar and grill.
