If you are in the New Windsor area and are a wing lover, you MUST check this place out- in fact, if you just a wing lover and not nearby, it may be worth the trip for the wings alone. If you are local and just looking for an establishment to have a drink, watch the big game, and shoot some pool with great beer and the BEST service I've ever encountered in a sports bar, this is the place- hands down.
A group of friends and I went in cold only knowing that the place had recently been reopened under a new name. We're not the group that typically likes sports bars- I myself have found that sports bars are typically too rowdy, lack a variety of decent beers on tap, and usually just have average quality food.
We walked in, and I was pleased to see immediately a mix of beers on tap- the standard Coors/Bud type stuff, Blue Moon, Sam Adams, and Guiness. They also had a nice mix of bottles, including hard cider and NA beer, and a full bar.
The bartender took our orders immediately after a warm greeting, and introduced himself to my fiance as Mike. Mike and the other bartender- a petite woman with curly black hair- were extremely friendly. At one point in the evening, my fiance wanted to watch the Knick's game while shooting pool in the side room; Mike found the remote and changed the projector so he could easily see it while hanging out.
I was tempted by the wings and we ordered two dozen, and man, it wasn't enough. It took a while longer to get them then I was used to, which I was excited about- typically when you don't get wings under 10 minutes, it means they are going to be crispy. And crispy is king with wings. These were no disappointment. The BBQ wings came out with the crispiest skin I have ever encountered (and I was convinced until that night no one could beat The Ruck in Troy, NY for wings) and well sauced with generous side cups of bleu cheese and ranch dressing, along with the standard celery and carrots. The wings were crispy and meaty, and one person in our party who disliked wings tried one and marveled over how far and away better these were than any wing they had ever had.
Mixed drinks were equally well-made, and reasonably priced. When we went in from 7-10 PM on a Saturday night, the bar had a slow but steady stream of customers, and was a great atmosphere in which one could watch a game or easily talk with a group of people. A variety of TVs in the main bar and side room with the pool table boasted everything from MMA to basketball.
Also, a huge thank you to the female bartender and other staff member who found my wallet by the table and had it for me when I came in after calling to say I'd misplaced it shortly after leaving.
I can't wait to go back here and bring more of my fiance's friends and family next time we are in the area. I really wish this was closer to Western MA- it was truly a one of a kind experience, in the best of ways.
One of very few sports bars in the area makes Happy Jacks a pretty good choice for your night out with the guys. The 15 flat screens, great bar food and cheap drinks prices make it a no-brainer. An incredibly laid back atmosphere with an open kitchen until 11PM EVERY night. Sports Enthusiasts can catch all their favorite teams because you can literally watch 14 different sporting events at one time. You can't do that from home.
