I have seen many Asian restaurants but this one is one of the most ambitious with three to four major themes in Asian food including their shabu which is great. Hibachi grilling with filet steaks, shabu with many different types of broths and meat - an enormous serving of meat and vegetables, vast variations in sushi and a karaoke bar. Â The pricing at least for now is extremely competitive. I am really perplexed as to why this restaurant is not brought up more. Â
I am very comfortable with Asian cuisine and many people could be a little confused due to the numerous variations of dishes. This can be remedied by engaging friendly wait staff and yes there are accents but there are many people on the wait staff that can help out quickly. They have been trained to respond quickly. Â
While the interior is completely renovated I think many people simply don't know the value and quality of the meals. The real aspect of the menu is that you can get traditional Asian fare but also keep it very clean and healthy with the hot pot and many other dishes - very fresh with the sauces to the side. This is a restaurant that appears to attract the adventuresome but actually there is something for everyone (except traditional fare dessert).
People should investigate their menus first as well to confirm the value. The shabu we found can feed two. We saw real professional wait staff with their entertaining techniques at the hibachi grill. We now do take out on a regular basis as many of the dishes beat shopping in higher end grocery stores. I don't normally post and I have no skin in the game here but I think this is a top contender in the area. One should at least check this place out - there appears to be a great amount invested with the current prices in both the quality of the food and the preparation.
We went there for the first time today (lunch). The best thing was the tea. The egg roll had been in the freezer too long, the fried rice was uneatable, as was the entire tempura box (shumai were way past "eat-by" date). Miso soup was OK, but not authentic. There was almost no one there, so service was fine. I can't think of a single reason to return.
Review Source:I've personally recomended restaurants to friends and family after just one visit and sometimes it seems that the good food and service was a fluke. Â So this was my second time eating at Hokkaido Restaurant in North Andover.
The restaurant has recently opened (and of this post are still waiting on liquor license) in a large venue which combines Chinese, Thai, Japanese under one roof. Â The conglomoration may lead one to believe that they may do many things good but nothing great...that would be a falsehood. Â
Today we brought the kids with us. Â Our 10 yo boy got the chicken fingers apetizer (10 peices WOW!) with a side of rice and our 8 yo daughter had the chicken wings (nice and big wings). Â My wife had the Massaman Curry with tofu and I tried the Red curry with tofu. Â The vegies in our curries were crisp and fresh, the coconut base to the curry sauce was rich and creamy and the respective flavoring was direct on target.
The wait staff is fantastic and attentive but not hovering. Â I joked with the waiter that this was my second time at Hokkaido, and everytime I come I have a problem. Â His look of concern disapeard into a laugh when I told him "My problem is I can't stop eating this Great food!"
Seems like they have a karaoke bar (which I am not sure is set up yet) that my wife and I will have to hit up some night we get a babysitter.
Oh, and best of all, for the amount of quality, fresh food, and great service you just can't beat the price!
We tried Hokkaido for the first time last night and we will DEFINITELY be going back!
We originally planned on getting the hibachi but once we saw how many other options were on the menu, we chose to order 3 different things.
We got Japanese as an appetizer (TNT maki roll/sushi) and Thai (pad thai) and Chinese (pupu platter and house special rice) for our meal.
There was not a single thing that we ordered that wasn't FANTASTIC! Plus, our family of four ate for just under $50 and we have plenty of leftovers that will last us a few more days.
The only downside is that there is no liquor license yet - which, to us, only was a negative because they didn't have anything for our 2 yr old to drink (milk, juice.... only had soda & water). The food was so good, though, that this downside didn't warrent a drop in the rating.
If they get their liquor license, continue with the fresh, quality food and use smart business, I can see this restaurant blowing China Blossom out of the water.
We absolutely recommend and will DEFINITELY be returning!
I came here with my boyfriend to try the Shabu a few days ago. The servers were very accommodating and very attentive. The Shabu table was nice overall, the meat and fish was fresh and they had some nice starter broth collections. I liked the miso one a lot. Overall it was a really good experience. We had a nice chat with the owners when we left that explained they were still waiting for their liquor license and they had such a beautiful bar area! I'm definitely coming back- there's no Shabu except in Boston that's this good!
Review Source:Where to begin.
The food, good. Chicken wings awesome, crab ranz ok, egg rolls ok, scallion pancakes great. The food isnt the reason why they get one star...more like the service and delivery.
I understand that people in this field may not have the best english, but it took me a good 10mins on the phone to spell out my whole address then give me the challenge of giving a credit card...meh. after waiting the usual amount of delivery time, I get a.phone call, telling me hes the driver asking if we can come down and get the food....outside. I polietly told the man that he will need to ring my bell, get buzzed in, and he can come to my.apt. He seemed pretty shocked and stated that I can come down. I then reminded him that I just sepnt $44 on delivery of food and hes going to need to.come upstairs.
My husband goes to the door, asks him if theres a problem with going to the.door, he s
States that they dont usually do that. My husband explained that we order delivery from many different places in town and we have never been asked or had this.problem. This whole time he had an attitude like he couldnt be bothered, no customer service and with his suit...looked to be the owner. After tipping him.poorly, he saw that, grunted to my husband and left.
First time customer....last time customer. Going that extra mile for customers that are spending good money on your food? Climb upstairs to the door like every other delievery joint around and suck it up.
Hoped for much better at this new Asian restaurant but ended up disappointed. Â We tried calling ahead to order take out but repeatedly no one answered the phone. Â Since we don't live far, we took a shot at driving by to order there since we had gotten a flier in the mail - they had to be open. Â Indeed they were. Â The place was so unorganized. Â There were tons of people waiting for take out, no one knew how to use the computer to place orders, they couldn't figure out whose order was whose. Â It took forever. Â The food was below average. Â A simple cucumber maki was sloppily made and none of the pieces were mended together. Â The yellow curry was too spicy and not well flavored. Â I opted not to finish it and throw it out. Â The avocado salad was very small and consisted of only avocado and cucumber with a dash of spicy mayo that was awful. Â The Pad Thai was boring and extremely over cooked. Â BUT, the miso soup was delicious. Â It was a disappointment and we probably won't be headed back, at least for a while until they get things more orderly and worked out.
Review Source:My boyfriend and I decided to try this place out given we are  hot pot fanatics and have tried every hot pot restaurant in Massachusetts. I was excited to finally have a closer option for my hot pot fix. We figured now we can take a quick drive down the street rather than drive into Boston towards Chinatown.
We were highly disappointed with our experience here. The waitress was not at all familiar with the items on the hot pot menu. My boyfriend ordered the surf & turf (chicken & selected sea food) while I ordered prime rib with a side of jumbo shrimp. The seafood tasted very dry and old as if it had been sitting out for a long while & not fresh. The quality of the meat  was mediocre at best. After taking our order we did not see our waitress again. We had to flag down waiters just to get a refill in our glass of water as we were extremely thirsty. It seemed like there was a lack of good customer  service training which should be addressed if this new restaurant expects to stay in business long.
Although this restaurant is extremely convenient, we will not be returning for a second try. With the same price point as Boston while lacking the great service and quality, we would prefer to make the trip in next time.
For several months we've seen the sign at the old Beijing Chinese restaurant that said a new restaurant would open "soon". It was a surprise when we were taking three of our grandchildren out to dinner that we saw the new place (Hokkaido} was open
"Let's try it!" I said to the kids. They'll eat anything and all of it. Husband was more cautious. He had noticed that Hokkaido serves Chinese, Thai and Japanese cooking and he believes that a restaurant that tries to do that doesn't do anything well. But the kids wanted to try it and he's a sucker for what they want.
The old Beijing had earned a pretty bad reputation and had troubles with the local Town board over alcohol license issues. We had been their five years ago and didn't care for it. It was sort of a dark, dismal place. We're not too knowledgeable about Chinese food, but we go to Asian restaurants about once a month and can handle chopsticks. From our experience, Sung Ju is the best Chinese restaurant in North Andover, but we are ready to try others..
The new owners of Hokkaido have done a fantastic job on the remodeling The entrance is bright and  inviting. The host greeted us as soon as we entered and led us past a sushi bar and a room of the Japanese steak house grill tables to a table for five. If you remenber the old Beijing, you won't recognize the interior of Hokkaido.
We had a total of six starters and five dinners with a mixture of the three cuisines. From memory, the starters were beef satay, chicken satay, pork dumplings, chicken wings, avacado salad and a spicy salmon dish. Our dinners were red chicken curry, orange chicken, chicken mu-shu, green beef curry and chicken over garlic noodles. Â I wouldn't call the food authentic to each nation, but everything was good - very good.
Things were not perfect. The restaurant had only opened the week before and they still had some issues with service. The starters came out slowly. As a result, we were still eating them when the dinners began arriving. Three of us had finished our dinners before the last two dinners were served (by which time husband was complaining to the manager). Twice food we had not ordered showed up at our table before being taken away to correct party.
Once Hokkaido sorts out their kitchen and service issues, they'll be a popular restaurant in the area. BTW: as of March 23rd, they did not have a beer/wine license.
