Came in on a friday night with my sister and sat at a table. They were busy, I'll give them that, but the service was dismal at best. Waited 10-15 minutes for our beers, which were dry for a good ten minutes before the waitress came back to get us another so we ordered a pitcher. Then we waited another 10 minutes for her to come back for our food order. the place is very small, so we could see her standing around behind the bar doing nothing. 30 minutes later our app. (boneless wings) which were good, came out. Then we waited another 45 minutes or so for our entrees while we saw our waitress stand behind the bar and eat while numerous patrons sat with dry glasses. We both got the John's roast beef which was excellent. I'd rate the place 4 out of 5 based on the food only but the service just stunk.

Had the meatball sub once - would not recommend it. Â The meatballs were tough and had little flavor. Â Maybe they would be better later in the day when they had a decent chance to simmer in sauce for a few hours they would taste better. Â I had it at the beginning of the day (right at noon) and the meatballs tasted like they had just been warmed up from the freezer and dropped into a roll with some sauce.
I'll give it this, the sandwiches were BIG we ordered whole pastrami a whole chicken & bacon, 1/2 roastbeeef 1/2 pastrami and two orders of the disco fries, came to $64 and some change, take note a whole will feed two to three people, the pastrami meat was good (not the best I ever had) the roastbeef was perfect with the gravy, my son liked his chicken fingers and bacon, the fries with brown gravy andr the Mutz they loaded on it was great, yum yum

Paulie & staff do a great job in the kitchen. Very nice folks, though the crew has rotated a fair bit over the years. Always a decent selection of beers on tap and the prices for both food & drinks are incredibly reasonable. They usually play pretty decent tunes & have the games you want to see on TV too.
Have yourself a John's Roast Beef sandwich... though, you might want to order a "half" unless you've got an army eating with you. Give them hell if they run out of Rice Balls and don't pass on the cheese cake whenever they have it.
The New Yorker is the best sandwich in the Valley! Â Don't let any patrons persuade you to try other items first.
Sit down to a cold beer and have the best pastrami sandwich i have ever had.
The bread is great, the mustard is spicy, and the coleslaw is perfect(get it on the side if the sandwich is for tomorrow).
I might actually go tomorrow for one, after entering this review.
Relaxed local bar, small but not crowded. Not as much variety on tap as some of the other bars around, but the ones they had included seasonal and imported. Come for the food, it is great. The sandwiches are huge, and unique.
Go for a beer and a sandwich sometime, you will not regret it.
I have been going to Hometown Heroes for 6 or 7 years at this point...and there's nothing else like it in town. Â Paulie makes awesome sandwiches, though not for the health-conscious. Â What's more is he has always carried hard cider, which is a favorite of mine, and which most bars only recently started regularly carrying. Â
If you want a sandwich, I suggest a half of any, though the Papa Allen is the favorite in my house. The Beatty Burger is an institution, and quite a delicious burger at that. Â My favorite is the Mediterranean salad with fried shrimp, not on the menu but worth asking for.
If you have room after your meal, ask for a piece of John's cheesecake. It's the quintessential New York cheesecake. Â
The service is quick and friendly and the late night crowd isn't too raucous.
VERY resonably priced, delicious pub food. Thursday Special would be my favorite, (sub grilled marinated chicken for fried.) A half at $7 has more chicken then most can comfortably eat. WIng sauce is superb. Fries are crisp and delicious. they also come with a variety of addons if you should choose including "mutz" and gravy. Good beer selection. Â A casual steady of mine.
Review Source:I've been here several time and yes the sandwiches are great and decently priced for the porion size. I can't even finish a half! Â The fries with gravy are awesome and you can get them with "mutz". We ordered a turkey and "mutz" with gravy and pastrami with swiss, cole slaw and spicy brown mustard. They both were delicious. The bottled beer prices are expensive, in my opinion, unless of course you are drinking miller lite. Gross. Â It definitely seems to be a college hangout with obnoxious sports fans . Its worth tolerating for the food though.

I uttered as I tried to polish off my Bri-Elle-T sandwich piled high with chicken fingers, enough bacon to get drunk off of (which I did), ranch dressing, lettuce and tomatoes. I ordered a whole with half to go for lunch at work tomorrow - what a smart girl. Most delicious sandwich I've ever experienced. Very fresh, very piled high, very full of bacon. Yum!
On a previous excursion to this Bethlehem gem, I partook of the disco fries (fries smoothed with out-of-this-world gravy and mozzarella cheese (or "mutz"). So good. This order was split amongst myself, my boyfriend and his dad. Then we'd each ordered a roast beef sandwich, again smothered in the same delectable gravy and mutz. Only would've asked for more gravy just because it was so damn good, even better than the homemade stuff my mom labors over for Thanksgiving, but don't tell her that 'cause I may not be invited to Thanksgiving henceforth.
Boyfriend goes once a week with friends and always kindly gets half of his to go (a human can only ingest a "half" sandwich - the whole is intimidating and probably one's recommended daily caloric intake) so I can try it. The turkey, mutz and gravy is phemon as well as the New Yorker (Hot pastrami with melted Swiss topped with coleslaw and spicy brown mustard). I can't imagine there is anything bad on the menu.
It's a small place, but with a nice, relaxed atmosphere. The staff is very friendly and talkative. The only thing left to be desired is the beer selection, but half a sandwich and you won't even be thinking about beer you're so full. I told boyfriend that when the current lease is up we're not getting anything within walking distance of this place because I'm not into the idea of gaining 50 lbs in sandwich weight.

Expect to be wowed by the food, beer and prices at Hometown Heroes, a hard-working bar & grill that feels like your neighborhood pub. Â I consider it one of Bethlehem's unsung treasures. Â
If you want to kick back with some friends, if you want to mellow out or pig out, you can do that here. Â If you want to ready yourself for bar hopping, you can lay the foundation here. Â If you've been out for a few hours, this is the place for a plate of disco fries.
Disco Fries = French fries with brown gravy and melted cheese.
You can thank our northern neighbors for this delicacy; in Canada this is called "poutine" and it kinda makes up for Bryan Adams. Â In the U.S. it's called a most delicious solution to the munchies. Â If you've ever gone clubbing in NYC, you have probably devoured disco fries at a diner to revive yourself at the end of the night. Â Hometown Heroes smothers fries in savory, salty homemade gravy and melted fresh mozzarella. Â
But before you get to the food, have a beer from the tap or bottle. Â Featured selections have included Guinness, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Lord Chesterfield Ale, Yards Brawler, Victory Hop Devil, Lindeman's Framboise, the elusive Leinenkugel, as well as PBR and Yuengling lager (domestic drafts are always $2!) Â Oh, and Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout which can sometimes be a meal in itself. Â
Along with the Disco Fries, my favorite appetizer is the house made tomato bruschetta with fresh mozzarella ("mutz".) Â
The owners and the servers are affable yet attentive, and the food is meticulously prepared and promptly delivered to your table or the bar. Â Their menu offers something for everyone. Even kids, even vegetarians.
For meat lovers, though, the tasty 8 oz. Black Angus steak burger is an excellent choice. It's as big as my face and served on a fresh crunchy roll.  The heroes, several of which feature the fresh melted mutz option (which really classes up a sandwich, dontcha think?,) are available in a half-size or whole.  I have never seen anyone eat a whole sandwich.  They are huge, not just in length but in girth. Take the Bri-Elle-T, which is a Hometown BLT with chicken tenders and ranch dressing added to it.  A half-sandwich was so loaded with bacon that even I couldn't finish it.  And I love bacon!  Once I ate the incredible Papa Allen:  Ham, hot capicola, and tomatoes sautéed in butter then topped with melted mutz.  If you're craving a hot pastrami sandwich, patronize this hometown joint instead of the Sands' Carnegie Deli, and order a New Yorker.
After a few visits to Hometown Heroes I started to crave it. Â Not only that, but, for $20 you can eat great, enjoy a few brews and have dollars left for a healthy tip and a few games of MegaMaxx. Â And sometimes, they even have cheesecake.
I've had one thing and one thing only - Â a large roast beef hero. Â For $8, you can't buy a larger or more filling hero, or one this good. Â There was tons of meat on it, with some good sauce. Â
I haven't tried the other food here, but I did see huge plates of their version of poutine - fries covered with gravy and cheese. Â If I recall correctly, it was only about $5-$6 for that plate. Â
You won't be helping your heart by eating here, but you can at least treat yourself occasionally to some of this pub grub.
There are 4 bars with food service within walking distance I only walk to HH's. Â From top on down the menu is full of choices that not only taste great but there is usually more then enough for lunch the next day.
Good selection of spirits, Black Sambuca, TIto's Vodka rarely can you find these in a bar anywhere. Â
Always check if Cheesecake is available, its the best you will find in the Valley.
Graham the bartender/cook/waiter is the best in town.
If ever I was to identify a standout local neighborhood bar in Bethlehem, Hometown Heroes would probably be at the top of my list.
This is a small and very casual bar in Bethlehem's North side. Â It is almost always frequented by locals. Â They have an okay beer selection on tap with a decent variety of bottled beers. Â There is usually some kinda nightly beer special going on so that's a nice perk. Â
The food menu is surprisingly the shining star here. Â This is pub grub not for the faint of heart. Â The owner/cook, Paul, has concocted some unbelievably enormous and mouth-watering sandwiches that can make your veins harden - all for around $7 to $10. Â Not such a bad deal, considering each sandwich can probably feed a small, starving family.
Service is great too. Â The regular bartender, Sam, is very down to earth and witty and a HUGE Sox fan. Â Makes for very pleasant company.
Would I come back for more? Â Hellz yeah! Â Even though it feels like a cave in there sometimes, I could care less. Â Just leave me alone whilst I engulf my sandwich!
