Please heed my warning, STAY AWAY
This is by far the worst chinese food i've ever eaten. I decided to try this place out because i thought it would be cheaper, Its not. Its just as expensive as any other place i've been to, without being at all appetizing. To put it simply, Greasy as sin and tasteless. Stay away at all costs. This is a resturant that gave up years ago and is just getting worse and worse. Stay away at all costs.
I never write reviews unless something is absolutely amazing, or disgusting.
I wouldn't feed this to my dog.
Oh Hop Sing, I had such high hopes for the food.  I REALLY wanted to like it.  I believe in the little guy.  I love to support lost causes (being a life-long Raiders fan has prepared me for such quixotic endeavors.)  It is a cute little place hidden away in Pacheco which is itself hidden away and not often worth finding.  I saw it while passing through and thought "what the heck" I could eat here or at the taqueria next door which seems pretty busy.  I really should  have walked to the left and had a taco.
The Good: The person behind the counter was very nice and helpful. Â The theme is kind of cute in a "wow this was probably nice looking when it opened a year or ten ago" kind of way.
The bad: Â The "old chinese recipe" fried chicken was something I was really looking forward to trying. Â When I was a kid we used to go to the Willow Tree in Dublin some Sundays for their brunch and they had these magically delicious garlic fried chicken wings that were delicate and juicy - almost tempura but not quite. Â When I saw this on the menu I thought Nirvana had finally found me - no not the dirty plaid shirt rockers. Â Hop Sing's version was not overly oily once again, but the coating was so dry and occasionally so hard that I checked my teeth in the mirror afterwards for chipped teeth. Alas not much garlic flavor either. Â Maybe it was my fault for trying to conjure up a childhood memory. Â Maybe no place can ever match that. Â The sweet and sour pork part of the combo would make for it, right? Â It looked pretty good. Â Not the electric red color we usually see. Â Maybe there is hope since it is obviously a homemade sauce? Â Eh, no. Â Stringier than usual meat and a thin sauce that was barely sweet or sour and whose highlight was the pineapple bits that were in it. Â Strike two.
The mediocre: Â The chow mein was not overly oily like many places I have tried. Â Unfortunately it wasn't overly flavorful either.
Overall: Â Either keep driving or veer left while walking to Hop Sing's in the hopes of accidentally entering the taqueria next door. Â I'm sorry Mr. Nice Counter Guy. Â The food left me wishing I had not eaten at all.
5 stars for the meal I just ate. Â I asked for a vegetable chow mien, without Bok Choy. The man who took my order asked why no bok choy. Â I told him that I've never liked it for it's too soggy and limp. Â He asked if he could make it special for me so that it's not limp and inedible. a few minutes later he came out with the best bok choy I've ever eaten. infact all the vegetables were crisp yet tender while the garlicky noodles were chewy and seasoned well. Thanks for taking your time to make sure I enjoyed my meal.
Review Source:Just moved here a few weeks ago from Concord and figured we'd try it out - place looked a bit dated and messy. We got combo  #1 fried chicken, noodles and fried rice, fried rice was great, the rest bland. Also got combo #2 sweet sour pork, noodles and fried rice, rice great, pork mushy, sweet sour sauce bland as well but pot stickers good. Didnt give us any napkins, soy sauce packets either. Took awhile (20 mins ) to get it, so I assumed would be fresh and tasty. Big dissappointment, we're used to Hunan's which was always great, we're not even going to finish leftovers today.
We're going to try the other Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese places soon.
Fried rice is good - goes well with the sweet and sour pork. Chow fun is decent tasting, but it's really greasy and doesn't sit well after awhile.
I used to come here a lot as I was growing up, but after having some really authentic, nongreasy Chinese food, this place will not be near the top of my list.
This review is a mixed one.
The boyfriends take on it: "I've always liked their food and I didn't order anything that was going to be bad. Chicken and broccoli was good, and I liked the sliced pork."
My review: "While the chicken chow fun was excellent- they use a wider variety of veggies than many other chinese food places around here, the won ton soup was ick! I was very disappointed by the soup, and personally I couldn't eat very much of the sliced pork. Arguably I'm not much of a pork person aside from bacon, but it was too fatty for my tastes, it's a texture issue."
So I split the difference and went with three stars for our review on this one. The service was good, the guy was super nice and we got our food promptly, but since we spent around $30 and I only enjoyed about $5 of the meal I really can't say I'll be going back. Just too expensive to run the risk of gambling when everyone raves about their pork and I'm not a pork person.
For some reason this didn't show up on my Yelp app which led to a very disappointing meal. I ordered the rice plate orange chicken ($7) and egg rolls ($4 for 2). There were 2 regulars there, so I felt somewhat optimistic even though the price was as high as some place with sit-down tables. The owner was a very nice man and it was a Friday, so the 2 cooks were dong the best they could bc the food is cooked to order, not sitting in trays. Still, expect to wait if you walk in at dinner time. When I got home I noticed my eggrolls were missing. The chicken was spongy and looked like a fruit salad, mostly pineapple, orange slices and bell pepper, so after that I wasn't too keen on tracking down my $4 egg rolls anyway.
Review Source:Hop Sing's is legendary - family-owned and operated business with food, fresh, real Chinese food take out and good prices - you know you are not paying for the decor! Located in a tiny strip mall in Pacheco, parking's not great but if you call ahead, you can pick up food easily. Why support franchise operations that take profits to a headquarters outside the community? Menu needs tofu items!
Review Source:i like the owners personality...nice little place...but what would be nice..is if the kung-pow chicken tasted like kung-pow chicken..it had too much ginger....sometimes when you own a restuarant...you stay inside the box..never leave to make sure your food is up-to-standards...
I mean, not to be rude..but if i owned a restuarant, I would always try to keep learning, how to make my food better than the others...but thats just me...
This is just the kind of place I generally dearly love. Â However, our meal Friday night, August 12, 2011 was awful, a 2-star review is generous. Â The pork buns were reported to be good on the drive home, and we drove all the way back to Walnut Creek before the rest of the food. Â It was one big disappointment. Â
The hot and door soup was brown but tasted of very little. Not hot/spicy or sour. My almond chicken was a clear broth, not brown and no flavor. My boyfriend had the fried chicken and he couldn't bite it - the smell was greasy. Â On top of that, that near bite - and he had an aftertaste in his mouth. Â Big waste. No more food adventures before we check Yelp.
I have always passed this place and finally stopped in to check it out. Â This place has been here for 35 years. Â The owner is extremely friendly and the food was definitely a hit. Â My Hubby loved the fried rice. Â The pork buns were nice & fresh. Â It wasn't all chalkly and stale. Â I ordered the Wor Wonton Noodle soup and it was delish with lots of fresh vegetables & a very tasty broth. Â If you are looking for fast Chinese take-out then this is the place to visit. Â This is take-out place people so this isn't a sit down restaurant. Â I will definitely come back.
Review Source:This could quite possibly be the worst restaurant on planet earth. Seriously folks. Don't eat here.
I decided to try this place after seeing it for years. It has been in business for a long time so somebody is buying this crap. There was a chance that it could have been a diamond in the rough, a hidden gem... so I tried it. Ordered the dinner for two which was sweet and sour pork, special fried rice, bbq pork chow mein and egg foo young. So we waited for 20 min in their filthy waiting area looking at a filthy turtle tank watching all the smart diners go in and out of Las Panchos next door....
When we got home and opened the containers the food was not recognizable. There was some dark crusty brown dirt looking stuff (special fried rice) and something else that (sorry to be blunt) looked like a baby's diarrhea diaper only worse (foo young). Then the strips of something that must have been sliced bbq pork lying on overdone soggy noodles (you guessed it - pork chow mein). Â Then the bucket of mushy light brown soggy sponge looking stuff (billed as sweet and sour pork but my money is on cockroach). OMG I nearly vomited just looking at the stuff. It was disgusting to look at, to smell and, yes, eat. I even tried the smallest amount of the disgusting mass of crap just to be sure I wasn't wrong in my assessment of my family dinner. Just to be sure that I didn't just really wait 20 minutes at the end of a tiring day with my tired kid in tow so I could spend my hard earned money on this bologna (actually a bologna sandwich would have been five star compared to this!).
Save your money, energy and stomach and NEVER EAT HERE. I MEAN NEVER!!!! RUN AWAY SCREAMING IF ANYONE EVER SUGGESTS YOU GO THERE!!!
P.S. it only has a one star because I couldn't give it zero and actually post a review.
This place defines hole in the wall, not the cleanest, but certainly friendly, I like several things on their menu and don't care for several things as well. Â It's convenient that it's located next to Los Panchos as my wife loves them (and so do I) I just happen to want Chinese food more than Mexican. Â Great fried rice.
Review Source:I got the number one, I was very pleased with the price. I took it home. I chewed the sweet and sour pork. It was disgusting it tasted like musty shoes or something, I don't know its hard to describe. I spit it out. My taste buds were not pleased. We were craving some sweet and sour pork! :( I would never come back here. I don't trust them....
If I'm dying for some Chinese food that I know will be reliable and decent, I will just go to Panda Express.
I really dont have to write a review because it would read exactly like Dan B's. Â I'll be quick:
-Been coming here and coming back for the pork fried rice since 1989--best ever REALLY
-DONT GET ANYTHING ELSE--U WILL BE SORRY
-If it wasnt for this place, Los Panchos might not have even got the traffic to become as famous as they are. Â Maybe Pancho should kick HOP a few bucks to remodel. HOP changes things around and gets new stuff but the place always seems to look dirtier and tackier each time...including now the TURTLES?
-My son insist I tell U that the pot stickers should be called pot SUCKers.
Thankfully, my Horchata from Los Panchos saved the meal tonight, cuz it was bad...real bad!
I love this place. Â They are slow, the lobby needs to be cleared out, cleaned and please lose the smelly turtle/ fish tanks. Â
But the food is good. The pork fried rice is perfect.  Watch the tweaked out gamblers come in and use a credit card to buy the $4 plate.  Pricing  is very good.  Wife hates it... Cinzia and Reno like it.
If this strip mall catches on fire everyone will die. Â People illegally park all over the place, 2-3 cars in fire lane is normal. Â I've told Pacheco... they don't care. Â I hope they jail those charged with enforcement and the illegal parkers when it happens.
Pluses:
Beef chow fun.
House special wonton soup.
Fried chicken wings.
Fried rice.
Tomato beef chow mein.
Overall quality.
Prices are reasonable.
Can get a good burrito, pizza or some scratchers in the strip mall while I wait for my food to be done.
The owner, Don, is a nice guy and has been there forever. Â The staff is pleasant.
Close to the freeway.
Minuses:
Closes at 8
Turtles and messy/dirty waiting area-a true sign of quality. Â The best Chinese food always comes from hole in the wall joints. Â It's take out only, they don't ask you to sit there to eat.
We had our housewarming catered by Hop Sing's and the food was delicious. Â They brought over heat lamps with the food and came to pick them up afterward.
Definitely my go to place whenever I want some Chinese food to go. Â Or when I'm at Target down the street.
Jack likes this place. Â I don't know why. Â I've tried a few things here (shrimp + snow peas, mongolian beef, kung pao chicken) and have always been disappointed. Â Jack, Reno & Cinzia like the pork fried rice. Â A lot. Â
The place is dirty.  I hate sitting on the blinding bright  (red? yellow?) cushions that line the walls and watching turtles try to climb the walls of that dirty tank while waiting for the order.  Parking can be a nightmare due to, I think, the 7-11 and the casino across the street.
The last time we went here, we literally had to step over 3 homeless people laying in front of the door which scared the be-jesus out of my 3-year-old: Â "I wanna go home mama... not here" Â Me too, Reno, me too.
This place has been here longer than almost anything else in the Pacheco-Contra Costa Blvd. area. Â Before Los Panchos, before Grand Casino, before anything except maybe Paddock Bowl, you had Hop Sings Chinese Take-out. Â There's a reason why it is still going strong today. Â Hands down they have the best fried rice I've ever had. Â They also use quality white meat chicken, which almost no Chinese place does. Â It has remained under the same ownership for over 30 years.
I highly recommend the Teriyaki chicken rice bowl (not true teriyaki but it's lean and delicious), the BBQ pork  fried rice, and the fried chicken drumettes.  The pot stickers are not really pot stickers, so stay clear of those. The place is a bit messy inside, but you're not going in to sit down so don't let that bother you.  Check it out-- Pacheco's claim to fame, Hop Sings.
