I am not a big fan of chain restaurants, but I like this Houlihan's. I recommend completing the form that allows Houlihan's to send you free coupons. I got a free appetizer the first week and everyone gets $15 free entree on their birthday.
My favorite starter is spinach dip with cheesy lavosh- basically a flatbread pizza/pita cover in cheese with tomato chucks and cilantro that you dip. It is best ordered for 3+ people, as it is quite large. French onion soup with provolone and crouton comes covered in a bowl with cheese.
Otherwise, I have tried their classic chicken caesar salad, quite large and just as one would expect. From the entrees, I usually alternate between the grilled rosemary chicken or stuffed chicken breast. I got the tuscany lemon chicken once, but since then, it has been too heavy for me (i.e. alfredo pasta dish basically). My friend got the chicken parmesan, which is apparently on par with Olive Garden chain.
I usually split the entrees with someone, as they are too large for me. And I can't seem to ever get to their desserts, though I tried the Kamikaze Brownie sundae= moist chocolate-ness. I really like their martinis and cocktails. A lot of people come here in large groups to eat wings and watch TV/ sports. Service is always great.
The only thing I'm upset about is all the familiar faces we knew, are all gone now. The managers, waitresses, and bartenders. All have been replaced and moved on. Food is good, drinks are good, nice atmosphere to chill in. They also have games on tv screens that you can play with personalized devices which is cool. I'd recommend.
Review Source:It's Houlihans... Its good for a quick bite to eat, and a drink... The service I experienced the last time I was here was AWESOME! Â Our waiter, I think his name was Brian... Stand up dude... Nothing was ever too much trouble, anything we asked for was taken care of promptly, and overall he actually seemed happy to have a job... The place was clean, and the food good. Â I'll be back eventually.
Review Source:I do not go to chain restaurants to often, but I must say Houlihans is one of the better ones. Never actually got an entree only appatizers. THE WINGS! The Thai wings have a sauce on them and a different one on the side... both are awesome. Standard Veggie Burger on the menu for the girlfriend....she's happy I'm happy so thats all I have to say about that.
Review Source:although this place is everywhere and is nothing out of the ordinary i have to commend the service and our waitress and even the food was on point. although something was weird with one of the entrees the manager took care of it and our waitress remained sweet as ever. its refreshing to go somewhere that is on top of their servers and doing things right, and the food is good, you know this all comes from one awesome thing : team work .
Review Source:I just started going to Houlihan's a few months ago, and it seems like I've been eating at Houlihan's every other week since! After eating there the first time, I would highly recommend signing the form that allows Houlihan's to email you free coupons. They give you a free appetizer within the first week and a free $15 entree on your birthday. I would also recommend eating their Thai Wings. Although it may be a little pricey, it is definitely a good start to wet your appetite. For entrees, the sizzling steak fajita's are my favorite but the southwest grilled chicken wrap is a close second. The staff is also very nice and accommodating.
Review Source:I've always loved Houlihans the food was great as  usual; however, our waitress by the bar wasn't that great.  Being from out of town, I wouldn't recommend coming here.  My friend was on anti biotics and was in the mood for a virgin tropical drink, instead of listening and being considerate the waitress was rude.  She made him a strawberry virgin daiquiri with whip cream without asking the customer. When the customer asked nicely if he could have the drink without the whip cream she shook her head at us and walked away.  Not a great way to treat your customers.
Review Source:I'm honestly not sure what people see in this place (or the chain, for that matter). Â I've eaten here a few times, and the food is pretty much akin to what you'd get at a Friday's, only at very inflated prices. Â If seated in the bar area, even at the tables towards the walls, it's always incredibly loud and difficult to hold a conversation with people, and the service has always been "alright", leaning on the side of inattentive. Â Granted, whenever I went, it was always with a large group of people at night, some of which had table manners that would best be described as "kindergarten". Â It's possible the servers just took one look and rolled their eyes, I know I would.
Did I mention that this place was pricey for what you get? Â Burgers were all in the $10 range, entrees around $15+, beers $4.50+, and all of which was about the same food you'd get at a similar chain, with the same portion sizes and flavor.
In all, I guess if you're craving chain food, but want to make believe you're getting something fancier, Houlihan's is for you. Â However, there's plenty of better options in this area for food (especially with Rutgers down the street), and you won't spend anywhere near as much to eat there.
Houlihan's is a pretty solid place. We had a really large group (30+ people) and for such a big group, they were pretty on top of the service, drinks and food. I wasn't too hungry, so I just got an order of Hot Cheese Fries which were good. The food definitely wasn't bad, but it seemed like pretty standard chain restaurant stuff (think TGI Fridays or Chili's).
Again, props to Houlihan's for being so friendly and accommodating for our HUGE group, because I know what a pain that can be. For that, Houlihan's is A-OK in my book.
Whenever I sit either at the bar or in the general bar area, I leave Houlihan's a satisfied customer. Â Whenever I end up seated in the dining area, forget about it!!!! Â Service is slow and inattentive (especially when you're ready to pay the bill), and there are screaming kids all over the place. Â Recently I actually got up and moved to the bar as soon as we were shown to our booth. Â
Luckily, service at the bar is great, and the bar staff are usually very friendly. Â I'm not crazy about the food beyond the burgers and apps, but I'd recommend any of the burgers and the bruschetta to all.
Another chain, but I'm actually a fan. I've been here a few times and this last time made me like it even more.
I did the 3 course meal for $13.95, which I didn't even know they had until I looked at the menu. I'm a vegetarian and at first, it didn't seem like they had much for me to choose from in the entree department. Or at least nothing that caught my eye. You can get more expensive entrees for $15-17, something like that. I chose the fettuccine alfredo but instead of chicken I asked for broccoli and veggies. The waiter was really nice about it and asked what kinds and I said whatever they had. I was expecting just broccoli and it came out with broccoli, green beans, green/red peppers. I was really happy that it wasn't just one vegetable. It won me over.
Starter salad was good, bread stick was a little hard... but the one that came with the pasta was warm. Odd. Ended the meal off with a chocolate hot fudge sundae with whip cream and a cherry.. WIN.
The ambiance and crowd in this place are great, but the food could use a total makeover. Â My BF ordered the fettucine chicken alfredo. Â The chicken was tough and overcooked and there was very little sauce on the fettucine. I thought he was exagerating so I tasted it. Â I've had better in a dollar packet of Lipton fettucine. Â I ordered the jambalaya which turned out to be another losing dish. Â Very little chicken, shrimp and sausage but an abundance of onions and peppers. Â Who do they think they're fooling? Â
We went on a Friday night and there was a wait but no more than 10 minutes. Â Our waiter was very attentive. Â Its just the food that was disappointing and definitely overpriced. Â I could've spent the same amount of money at the Spain Inn and had a fantastic meal.,
Chain..none the less a good one though. Nachoes are decent...their appetizers are pretty good and nice to share. SPIKED WATERMELON yummm won't get you too drunk but the size n taste are slammin'. For dinner I've always only gotten the rosemary chicken bc its to die for. Try it out but expect to wait for 30 to 45 mins at night
Review Source:I work at Rutgers University right down the street, so this place tends to be a staple in my lunch rotation. The food has gotten better and better as they try to reinvent themselves as a chain. They have a lot of unique options and actually very good dishes. The wait staff is normally very friendly and helpful, and custom orders are as a rule done right with no issue.
Highly recommended, especially if you work for the University which sometimes can seem their entire lunch crowd is RU employees...
Since I work at Rutgers, my colleagues and I frequent this restaurant often. Â The food is tasty and inexpensive. Â I always have a manager stop by our table to ask us about our food. Â This is also a great place to come if you have 20 people and want to get together for a birthday or some other celebration. Â They have awesome bar specials during peak sports seasons. Â I would definitely say this is a great way to spend your evening.
Review Source:I wasn't impressed. Â Â It seemed like a basic chain to me (not sure if it is the only location or not).
I never feel good after eating at this type of restaurant, my husband says because the food is processed and we do not much care for processed food. Â
If you are from this area? Â And if you like chains? Â By all means....knock yourself out. Â If you are from the west coast? Â Just order a pizza somewhere.
Houlihan's has been my favorite of the chain restaurants since 1993 when I tried the Baked Potato Soup in NYC at the location by Lincoln Center. Â (To this day, I don't know if I truly like opera or if it's tied to this soup! Â haha)
The New Brunswick, NJ location does not disappoint either!
Service was wonderful and attentive and on top of their game even with the HUGE group we surprised them with last night -- there were at least 20 of us! Â Drinks came quickly and were refilled just the same, and the food came out perfectly done. Â I couldn't ask for a better experience!
This place looks rally nice. I just went there for the first time for dinner. They have a good selection of cocktails but my boyfriend said they are regular mixes you can find anywhere. I am a beer person and they don't have great selection of beer on tab but they can provide sam adams or blue moon, which is always acceptable.
For starters we ordered buffalo style chicken fingers, extra spicy. They were freakishly delicious. and definitely rose my expectations for the main course.
For main course we ordered chipotle chicken enchiladas and rosemary chicken. Both of them pretty bad. I think the chicken in both dishes were pre-frozen chicken. So unfortunate. And I could not get any smoky taste from the enchilada I ordered and I was really craving for that. At the end one of two pieces of chicken and half of the enchilada was uneaten in the plate, we mainly ate the side dishes.
However, I would definitely go there again for the chicken fingers and some drinks.
Came here for dinner last night. The hostess guided us to a table but no waiter/waitress approached us until at least 15 mins later. It's not like this place was packed either; we just saw several servers casually floating around in the restaurant. We had 2 menus, no water and no plates. I almost stood up and left this place but my better half persuaded me to stay a bit longer. Finally, our waiter decided to show himself and asked us if we wanted any drinks. By then, we had more than enough time to decide what to eat so we placed our orders right the way. I definitely wasn't hiding my impatience/temper and then the next thing we know, two managers came over to explain that they were really busy (yahh sure..) and didn't mean to neglect us. On top of that, we were offered an appetizer of choice, on the house. Now we are talking...I definitely had ordered an appetizer and made sure they took note of that!
Now that the managers are aware of the situation, our experience here changed drastically. Our food was brought out pretty fast and there's always somebody refilling our water/drinks. As for the food here, I give it 4-stars based on the following dishes: We had the Thai Chicken Wings for appetizer and they were REALLy good; the perfect combination of tangy taste and Asian spice. For main course, I had the Buffalo Bleu Salad, which I loved and the portion was huge. My bf had the Cajun Chicken Grille with Sweet Potato Fries and that was awesome as well. We LOVE the Sweet Potato Fries!!!
Overall, we enjoyed the food here and will be back to try other dishes. Hopefully we will not have the same problem again next time.
Basic chain restaurant with a different name. The 16 oz Prime Rib was 30% fat. After cutting off the fat left a little over 10 ounces of meat. For $21 for the meal, I'd figure a little less fat. The waiter was really uninterested in serving, but did his best to show up. The ice tea came in the bottle with a glass with ice. Considering the price of the meals and quality of service, this is an okay place. Don't think I'd ever go back.
Review Source:Dont remember this place too much, the thing I remember was the appetizer that I enjoyed. Â Im not a mushroom kind of guy, but If you happen to stop by there with friends, Get the appetizer called:
'Shrooms, its a Jumbo mushroom caps stuffed with herb and garlic cream cheese, coated in distinctly crunchy panko bread crumbs and crisp-fried. Served with creamy horseradish sauce. Trust me, Over eleven billion was served since 1972. Â Thats a FACT baby!
I organized a surprise party for my brother here. Â We had a party of 30, which made me nervous because sometimes restaurants can't handle that many people at once. Â But Houlihan's was really great to work with. Â They were really accommodating in every way. Â The service was good and thorough. Â The food all came out on time. Â And they even stored, plated and served the cake that we brought in. Â The food portions are really generous and everyone enjoyed their meal. Â (The pot roast was really popular.) Â I definitely recommend this place if you're looking for reliable service for large groups.
Review Source:Houlihan's surprises me over and over again. The food is reasonably priced, the portions are large, and the service is phenomenal! I can't stress how good the service is. I dropped a fork on the floor, and before I could pick it up, my waiter had a new one at the table. The atmosphere at the restaurant is great too. The waiters and hostesses check on you consistently to see if they could improve your meal in any way. They are professional, well-mannered and skilled. The restaurant is dim-lit and quiet in some areas, but a little more chatty near the bar. Ask where you want to sit, and they will gladly accommodate you!
The food is largely an american menu, but need not fear! Try coming before 5pm and you can get the early bird special (3 courses for under $15!! ).
I don't know what else to ask from a chain restaurant. They have it all. If you're in the area, stop in. You won't regret it.
This is one of my favorite chain locations in New Jersey. We had a very sweet and attentive waitress which I can always appreciate. This place is clean and the food is consistent. I've only been here on weekdays right after the lunch rush, so I only know this particular location to be quiet and not at all busy. I think they offer a 10% discount if you show your Rutgers student/staff ID, too :)
Review Source:Sometimes I think that I just enjoy Houlihan's because I live across the parking lot but I do think that it is a good chain restaurant.
I tend to go here for drinks and appetizers far more than I do for dinner. Â
I enjoy the mini burgers and the tuna appetizers the most. Â
They also make a great dirty martini.
i live in Brooklyn. my boyfriend lives in North Brunswick. when we're out in NJ, the bar/restaurant selection can be lacking (expect when it comes to Indian & Asian cuisines. Central Jersey's got that down pat). so when we decided to skip the Yankee game we had tickets for last Thursday after a 3 hour rain delay, we wanted a place where we could eat, drink, watch the game on nice TVs, and play trivia. Houlihan's, i love you.
as Jennifer G. said, for a chain, this place is as good as it gets. we sat at a high-top table in the half-full bar area and the waitress tuned the 2 TVs directly in our eyeline for us - one with NTN trivia, one with Yankees. BF was in heaven. i generally don't like places with ginormous, picture-book style menus, but even with a huge selection of food and drinks, these guys come through. tons of beers on tap, nice wine list (and decently priced), and man, can these guys cook a piece of fish.
we had the tuna wontons and i could have gone home happy right there - something about that wasabi mayo does me right. BF had grown-up chicken fingers and i had a BBQ salmon salad that was so big i got two more meals out of it (i love soggy salad. i know. weird). two glasses of Menage a Trois later, i was convinced to share the smores dessert, and i confess i was afraid BF was going to leave me for a pot of melted chocolate and marshmallow. so good!!
service was good, not too overhearing but our server was funny and sweet. we were shocked at how much fun we had. we have a new suburban go-to spot. and now whenever we drive by, i wistfully sigh, "i love you Houlihan's."
For a chain restaurant, Houlihans is one of my favorites. Â First off, they have NTN Trivia...man, I love NTN Trivia! Â There aren't nearly enough places in New Brunswick that have it! Â The bar at Houlihans is perfect for NTN, it's big, they have a good selection of alcohol (and everyone knows that drinking makes you smarter), and there's usually a good chance other people might join in on the trivia action, which the more the merrier!
Aside from the trivia, Houlihans has a good menu. Â The stuffed chicken breast and the fajitas are tasty. Â The bruschetta is so good that I crave it. Â The bad thing about their food is that sometimes it's really good- and sometimes it isn't. Â I may have the bruschetta one night and it's warm and delicious, and at the next visit the bruschetta tastes like it's been sitting around for a day or two. Â I think that seems to go in hand with how busy the place is though, and more times than not, it's a good meal.
Another plus about Houlihans- getting back to the bar- is that the bar staff are some really cool people. Â My SO and I kind of became Friday night regulars for the NTN Trivia and dinner and the bar staff got to know us. Â It got to the point where we'd walk in and we'd have our usual drinks sitting in front of us before we even took off our coats- I really appreciate things like that! Â They even remember that we prefer our Blue Moons without the orange slice!
Just the size of the bar is also a plus. Â Of course most chain restaurants have larger bars, but I just love them. Â I hate having to stand around waiting for a seat. Â The bar at Houlihans also has that low lighting in the bar so that you don't feel like you've got a drinking problem for having a pint or two (or more) while the sun is still out.
I went into Houlihan's on a random Sunday, on my way back from school, expecting something along the lines of TGI Friday or Ruby Tuesday, but I was very surprised. The place had a nice, dimly-lit atmosphere, friendly waiters and waitresses, and very good food. Everything about the restaurant exceeded my expectations of the place, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. It's location is a little bit out of the way (at least is was from my dorm, I had to drive around from behind Sears to get to it). There is also South of the Border right next door, which I've heard good things about, so if there is a long wait to get a table you'll have another place to check out.
