We went to Jocelyn's for dinner last night. Â It was FABULOUS! Â The service was outstanding and the waitress gave us lots of suggestions about how to best enjoy the array of appetizers we ordered. Â We started with the combo appetizer platter which had grape leaves (both veggie and meat), falafel, baked kibbe, hummus, stuffed cabbage, and tabbouleh. Â Everything was so scrumptious and the pita bread was light and fresh. Â The hummus is SO MUCH BETTER than anything you could get at the supermarket. Â It was creamy and slightly nutty....divine! Â I got the Lebanese salad (green salad with feta and an incredible lemon vinaigrette) which was crisp and fresh. Â For dinner, I ordered the lamb kebab skewers. Â The lamb was tender and flavorful and it was served on homemade buttery rice pilaf, which was yummy, and grilled vegetables were the side. Â My dinner companions ordered the baked cod and the mixed grill and were really happy with their meals.
We were too stuffed for dessert. Â I will definitely be back and also keep it in mind for takeout. Â The high quality of the food, the very reasonable prices, and the excellent service makes this a 5 star rating in my book.
Middle Eastern is hands down in my top for favorite cuisines. I came to Jocelyn's the other night for a party and was pleasantly surprised by everything.
The hummus was delicious and the baba was also, but if you don't like smokiness in your food, pass it up. I loved it. The portions were pretty large as well.
The menu was decent, they have pretty much everything you might want from baked/raw kibbe, grape leaves, stuffed cabbage to shawarma.
I wanted a little of everything so I got the appetizer platter. Either come here starving, share it or take it home and make a few meals of it. Its huge! Mine had grape leaves (meat/rice), cabbage, kibbe, stuffed pepper stuffed zucchini and lima beans with lamb over rice pilaf. While everything was delicious, the zucchini and pepper lacked flavor and needed salt, but everything else was delicious.
If I am in the area again, I would go here for sure!
My hub and I love stopping in here when we crave Mediterranean food!
We usually get the usual platter that has an assortment of grape leaves, stuffed cabbage (we ask for no stuffed peppers, and extra on the cabbage rolls :) ) and then they also have the rice with lima beans and kibbee on the side.
It's fantastic!
We also like to sit in the bar area ... we love conversation with the bartender and employees. Looks like the bar dining area room can be used too as a function room ... I'm sure they would accommodate if anyone asked!
The owner is very nice and is always there (always a good thing!) making sure everyone is enjoying their food. Joceyln is the owner's daughter, and she is a hard worker as well from what we have seen.
I'm craving those stuffed cabbage rolls now!
Our primary reason for visiting Jocelyn's last night was to see the live entertainment. Â We were greeted by a very friendly and helpful hostess - we used the main entrance. Â The decor was traditional middle eastern and was approximately 50% full. Â We walked through the dining room into the lounge area. Â We found two comfortable seats at the bar and was nice and close to the music. Â The acoustic sets were incredible, the food and service was less than desirable.
Beerless for a while, we observed the rest of the lounge. Â It was clear that we should have sat at a high top tables. The wait staff was more attentive and friendly than the bartender that was pushing out more drinks to the tables than the bar. We had to wait, and then ask for our beers to be replenished each time.
We ordered the kibbee balls and stuffed peppers. The kibbee with yogurt was dry but decent, the stuffed peppers tasted mostly of the main spice used in the dish and the pan that it was cooked in. Â We didn't finish either dish and was not checked in on or asked if we enjoyed the dishes that were visibly played with.
We were briefly visited by an interrupting owner? who gruffly asked us, "why are you not eating?" Â We were in the middle of a conversation. Â No introduction from this person and did not feel a genuine concern for the performance of his establishment.
Still hungry we ordered the hummus and did enjoy it. Â It was unclear if there was bread or pita in the basket in front of us - it was also unclear if the bread was married from the couples basket next to us.
Many more stars for the music. Â
We will not be going back.
We recently moved to Windham and have been trying everything in the area in the hope to find a couple of favorites. Â My girlfriend loves Mediterranean food but I haven't really been exposed to a lot of it. Â Since this was our 1st trip, we decided to order the Mediterranean Combo Appetizer and the Stuffed Assortment as our meals and share since it comes with a taste of everything.
This was plenty of food for two and we took leftovers home. Â I really loved the Lima Beans and Lamb with rice and the stuffed peppers and stuffed squash the best. Â The Falafel balls were also excellent. There are a lot of really interesting items on the menu that I look forward to trying next time. Spicy Eggplant? Â Yes, please.
I don't really have a lot of other Mediterranean places to compare against but the food tasted fresh and I had a good experience here. Â I've probably driven by this place a million times but never noticed it, like most places on 28 they all just seem to blend into the background. Â Once inside, the restaurant opens up and has a nice cozy relaxing feel to it.
We will be back.....
My wife and I were looking for some good middle eastern food and this was not it. I don;t understand how this place gets four stars from people. If you want good middle eastern go to Al Wadi in West Roxbury. Anyway, We ordered the spinach stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer and could not taste or fond the spinach. The salads were blah. We both ordered lamb skewers for dinner she ordered hers med rare and it came back raw. The second try was over cooked and salty. Both our skewers were not good cuts of meat, Mine was overcooked and I could not taste if I was eating beef or lamb and was overcooked. We complained to the manager and were told how much everyone likes it. Finally they advertise live music on Saturday nights. There was none.
Review Source:Portions were indeed large, but I've seen a better and greater variety of dishes at other middle eastern restaurants. Had the chicken shawarrma which would have been bland if not for the recommended garlic cream sauce (which was quite good). They also nickel and dimed us on the bill. When we asked for some veggies for our hummus order (which was good), I didn't expect them to be free, but tell us we're going to be charged. Also ordered ice cream as a dessert and was charged for a full sundae (for both orders, one for my two year old). If you're going to charge us for a full sundae, put sundaes on the menu and include a price. Asking if we want any whipped cream or nuts was not enough to infer we were customizing a full -priced dessert. The baklava was fantastic, though, I must admit. The food itself was okay, so I didn't want a "2" rating to mislead people, but I won't be going back.
Review Source:Surprisingly good food and service in a not very attractive location. Â The appetizers are very large and very good - especially the kibbe. Â We ordered hummus, tabouleh, kibbe (raw & cooked), and eggplant - this fed the 3 of us for more than two meals. Â I also enjoyed the interior of the restaurant: one half is a lounge while the other is a well-lit yet cozy dining area. Â Overall a lovely place to get food when you're shopping in the area.
One star's knocked off because the sangria was like watered down watermelon juice.
I go out to eat, a lot. The menus start looking the same. Not here! Â I was delighted to find steak tartar - well close enough - raw kibbee. It was scrumptious and huge - probably about a pound of meat. Â It is served as an appetizer. You could easily split it between 4 hungry people.
The homemade hummus was tasty and had a good texture. The vegetarian grape leaves were delicious. There are plenty of standard Greek / Mediterranean dishes including straight broiled steaks, lamb, kebobs, and baked seafood. Â
The server was friendly and prompt - without being rushed. A nice balance.
The decor was trying to be classy, and was a few notches above Friendlys, but not where I'd want to have a special romantic dinner. Â I'll certainly be back to try more of the menu, like the Cilantro Tahini Haddock, but not too often as the prices are a bit high - though the portions are very large. I'd rather have less in the doggie bag and a lower check.
Had a great meal. All entrees come with a starch and you choice or a garden or caesar salad. I had the lamb skewers and they were great. Hand cut fries were good. My friend had the surf and turf. She said the bake stuffed shrimp was excellent and she ordered the rice pilaf. Portions were big and we both had leftovers. Would definitely go back.
Review Source:Love this place. I have to say, while I'm a Lebanese/Syrian woman, I'm very picky when it comes to Middle Eastern food. Jocelyn's has met all my expectations and more. I tend to go there some nights after work and meet girlfriends. One girl I go with is a vegan, so we order the vegetarian grape leaves and hummus which is fine by me...both are out of the world and delicious!!! I really don't order much besides that or Kibbee. I've normally always had wine, but this last time, I had a pumpkin pie martini, and my girlfriend had a jolly rancher martini and OH it was awesome!!! We had a really sweet bartender!! A family member always comes out and checks on people it seems, which is a nice addition to any establishment. I didn't give it 5 for this reason alone...there is only ONE male bartender we seem to have issues with when we go in...not very friendly at all. But I would never not go to this place for dinner or drinks because of that. I have never really mentioned anything to the ownership either, so I suppose that might be my fault as well. Either way, if you want a friendly atmosphere (99% of the time) and great drinks....and some delicious home made food..I would give this place a shot!

Update to this: Heard from the owner after this review, and she was thankful and apologetic about the service. I guess it's a lesson learned to speak up at the time and deal with the service you are getting immediately rather than waiting. However, it speaks volumes to the kind of establishment it is..that they value their customers and want to make sure their dining experience is a great one. Thank you to the ownership for contacting me and showing their concern.
We had a wonderful meal here when we stopped as we were passing through on our way home from Logan. The food
Was great, especially the hummus. The liner balls were really good and so was the falafel. Â Most of All, every staff member was extraordinarily nice and helpful. We had some nice chats with the lovely hostess who seemed to be a family member of the owners and the server was also great. Went to lengths to make sure we had a great meal and make recommendations for us. Will be back!
Great assortment of Lebanese dishes! I was a little overwhelmed by the menu, and almost went with the platter that had several different entrees. I ended up getting the stuffed cabbage rolls, and it was delicious. They give you a lot of food: salad, 2 sides and then a huge entree. My friend got the falafel plate and really enjoyed it. We took left-overs home and ate it the next day. Our waitress was really nice and attentive. The prices were good, especially for the amount of food that you got. We tried a slice of the lemon cake for dessert and it was very rich and delicious. I would definitely return again!
Review Source:Love the place. Went there for the first time since it was Phoenician and had a great experience. We were greeted promptly and found everybody to be very pleasant and willing to help. The menu looked outstanding and appears to have something for everyone. The food came out in a timely manner and was very good. The portions are very big, so bring your appetite. The hummus is probably the best I've ever had. We'll definitely be going back for more.
Review Source:I have to tell you right away that this is a biased review. Â Love the restaurant, love the family and of course love the food.
I write this review because Jocelyn's is a restaurant that may throw people off with the Mediterranean name but it is way more than that. Â
This restaurant is what I look for in a restaurant, things you do not make at home.
I do not like chains and I always want fresh made and this restaurant does not disappoint.
I have to tell you that I am picky and because of that, Jocelyn and I have formed a friendship from me coming in and giving her valuable feedback. Â I want this restaurant to be around for a long time and I hope that those of you who have not been here before will give it a try.
The Arabic food is outstanding. Â Love all of that stuff for a long time.
The yogurt touch with the Kibbee and the fries are fresh cut and delicious.
The haddock is one of my favorites and I can honestly say that I have not had a bad meal. Â Kibbee Balls are a great appetizer and although I do not get it too often, the Baklava desert is so good it should be illegal.
Jocelyn and her Family and staff are always warm and welcoming, they stop to chat or see how we are doing.
When we were not around for a few weeks and we came in they were concerned that we were unhappy with a previous visit. You have to love that touch.
As many people have yelped before Jocelyn's is a Salem Gem.
We will be there Saturday in the lounge with Jim in the bar. Â My wife and I love our Martinis!
OUTSTANDING!!! Â For those that know, it was on par with good old Bishops! Â The food and service was fantastic. Clean, nice waitstaff and large portions.
I went there with my family for Easter and we had about 13 people in our party. Â The food was served hot, the hummus was fresh and the pita bread was fresher! Â We also had stuffed cabbage that made your mouth water. Â You could taste the nutmeg/cinnamon.
The entrees were hot, freshly made and bursting with flavor. Â French Fries galore and service was top notch. Â They really know how to make people feel welcome and want to return.
This place is family owned and they treat you like family (respectfully).
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Â Hands down, this is the best Mediterranean Restaurant in the Merrimack Valley area.
I met the rents there yesterday for lunch, always a nice treat :) Â We were seated in the dining area, nice and bright, and greeted by a polite server. Â She asked if we had been before, we said no, and she gave us a bit of info on the menu, and made it a point to show us a couple of apps that we might want to try. Â We opted for one of the Mediterranean platters that came with falafel, baked kibbee, stuffed grape leaves, stuffed cabbage leaves, hummus, and tabouleh. Â Everything was very fresh and tasty, the hot items were hot/warm, and the others were cold (as they should be), and there was tahini sauce for dipping. Â It was nice to be able to have a little bit of everything, I really enjoyed and so did my parents, they especially commented on the falafel. Â It had a nice crunch on the outside and a very smooth/creamy texture on the inside, with nice flavor.
We then ordered lunch, my dad and I had the kafta wrap, Â the meat in the wrap was a mixture of ground lamb, beef, parsley, and spices made into "mini" patties if you will, and there was lettuce, onions, and tomatoes in it with a very light dressing. Â The wraps are all pita bread and it was huge! Â Mine was very tasty. Â You have the option of fries or rice on the side, I ordered the rice knowing I wasn't going to eat it anyways, it was ok, it was rice. Â My dad said that the meat was a little dry but had great flavor, which made up for it. Â My mum opted for the spinach salad with lamb tips on it. Â She said it was good, but honestly, they were slightly overcooked (more than one would like) and the waitress neglected to even asked how she would like them prepared. Â My mum said they were tender though. To me the lamb looked a bit sparse on the salad and the tips themselves were small. Â But anyway, she was still happy with it.
It was nice getting the app. platter because I actually used some of the tabouleh on my wrap, which made it even tastier! Â I ended up eating only half (so did my dad) and we brought the rest home. Â Overall a very pleasant experience. Â I would go back for lunch or dinner, esp since my friend works there, she was the one who recommended the place to begin with.
Tried Jocelyn's Mediterranean Restaurant a couple weeks ago. The atmosphere is really nice, really good lighting, were promptly seated at a table by the window. A girl promptly came over and gave us water and said our waitress would be right over. She was right over, was very pleasant, asked us if we had ever been there before, and explained some of their menu items. She put down a huge basket of pita bread and butter.
I got Haddock, Rice Pilaf which came with a wonderful mixture of fresh veggies. Very flavorful. The fish was fresh and cooked perfectly.
My husband got T Bone steak, the fresh cut French fries, and his also came with the veggie mixture. He enjoyed his meal very much. The plates the meals are served on are huge and the quantity of food on the plate is very generous.
I also took some Chocolate cake home with me for dessert.
Overall a great dining experience. A lot of the people in there seemed to be regulars as a lot knew each other and the waitresses seem to know some of them as well. When leaving, several waitresses and hostess made sure to thank us for coming.
Be sure to ask for the garlic sauce! Â It's not on the menu and the really friendly hostess offered it to us. Best thing we had tonight and that's saying something! Â Great, authentic Lebanese food. Big portions but all quality. I ordered the baked kibbe and my boyfriend had the beef shawarma. Â Both were excellent. Surprisingly the sauteed onions were the surprise hit of the meal. Seriously... Â mild, sweet and tasty. Next time we're in the mood for Lebanese food, this is the place we'll go.
Review Source:Mediterranean Combo Appetizer - 3 Meat Grapeleaves, 3 Vegetarian Grapeleaves,
2 Stuffed Cabbage, 2 Falafel, Hommus, Taboule, & 2 Kibbe Balls. and Baked Stuffed Mushrooms Mushroom caps baked with Parmesan cheese, garlic,
spinach, & seasoned bread crumbs.
Everything was hot (or cold), fresh and very tasty. The appetizer platter was plenty, but we had to try the mushrooms.
Another reviewer commented on the mashed potatoes and, much as I still love this place, and swear by the mixed grill, I would agree with the assessment. Recently had them and they came out tepid, grainy and lacking the promised garlicky taste.
I'll definitely be going back, but I'll stick with the fries (which are delicious) with my mixed grill, etc.
This weekend is the first time we visited this place and a Mediterranean place while coming back from NH and this was on our way to MA.
When we reached, place was full. We had called 10min prior to reaching there for dinner.
We were seated as we reached.
We ordered stuff mushrooms, cabbage and grapes from appetizers , Haddock fish with veggies and baked potato and Pasta with chicken dishes . Portions were big.
Stuffed meat grape leaves were good, Mushrooms were delicious. Fish was soft. Service was prompt. Staff was very friendly. Our meal was very healthy without being buttery or artificially flavored. Butter was served on the side. Meal came with big salad on the side and a basket of pita bread and butter. It was a good change.
Will visit again to try more dishes on the menu.
Note: If you are looking to have healthy meal, this is the place for you.
This place is FANTASTIC!
I found this place while traveling for work and eaten lunch here quite a few times. The lunch menu is quite varied and in addition to all the Mediterranean wraps and plates, they also have some American style food. Portions are quite large so definitely worth the money.
My favorite is the chicken schwarma, but the falafel and baked kibbee are pretty delicous too.
Dinner menu isn't that different, although I've only been to dinner once.
Atmosphere is very classy and upscale, although I wouldn't worry about showing up in more casual clothes. Service has always been excellent as well.
This falls under one of the many places I have been too lazy to write about. :(
My deepest apology!
I travel a LOT and the many places that I visit RARELY deserve a second look, Jocelyn's is NOT one of those places! When in Salem, NH, Jocelyn's is a MUST stop for me! I have spent so much time here, I have on occasion forget to go home! Â
All I can say is visit Jocelyn's and tell them Christopher sent you. You will INSTANTLY understand why I NEVER want to leave! EACH AND EVERY customer is treated as if they are part of the Jocelyn's family! You want something NOT on the menu? Just ask. If the ingredients are in the kitchen; DONE!
And I warn you... do NOT take your mother out to eat here! Jocelyn's rates one of my coveted "SLAP YO MAMA IT'S SO GOOD" awards!!
We finally made it to Jocelyn's.
It was a Friday evening, and the place was not that busy which was strange.
Started off with complimentary pita bread and butter and a classic dirty martini. ($9.00)
Ordered the falafel appetizer which was perfect. 5 round balls with a fava bean garlic -lemon sauce.( $9.00) Â Nice presentation as well.
The salads came next and were fresh and really good.
I had the beef Shawarma which was seasoned perfectly. More sauce of the side and hand cut french fries was delish. The beef was a little dry but seasoned perfectly.
Dennis had the stuffed peppers which were also very good.
Dinner came to $65 which was a bit more than what our usual Friday evening budget allows. I better hold off on the $9 martini next time.
We would return as I want to try the stuffed cabbage on the menu.
They are now advertising live music on Saturdays.
On a side note: Dennis used to work here abt. 30 years ago when it was called Richard's Roast Beef.
We have been here 4-5 times since it opened. Â The food is wonderful and the staff is very helpful. Â When it first opened they did not offer any lambchops but we went a month ago and they were on the menu. Â
Our last return trip was just that...our last. Â The quality is still good but the prices have been so inflated that it has become unaffordable. Â I might be tempted back for lunch because their baba ganoush is that good but dinner is probably off the list.
Go hungry! Jocelyn's delivers an extraordinary amount of food at very reasonable prices. Most entrees on the menu range from $15-$22. For that price, you get a basket of pita bread, a very generous sized garden or ceasar salad, a side of either rice, potato or handcut fries and a heaping main course! I had the Beef Shwarma and I had enough to have for lunch 2 days in a row!
So how was the food, you ask? The cabbage rolls were amazing. An appetizer portion comes with 8 rolls for $8. The Beef Shwarma was super flavorful and very tender. The baked kibbee was as thick as a dictionary, yet soft and full of amazing spices. And a special pasta dish with veggies, feta cheese and grilled shrimp was light and delicious!
The service was also wonderful. Two questions that surprised me and made me realize what a terrific server we had were 1. Would you like your appetizer or your salads served first? and 2. Are these leftovers all going to the same home? It's the little details like this that servers don't always ask and can make or break a meal.
All in all, I deam Jocelyn's an amazing Mediterranean gem in Salem, NH!
This place is just a wonderful carry over of the Phoenician and of course Bishops from the olden days in the "Mac Valley". Â
I have been here for dinner a couple of times and recently did a small party there for my mother. Â They are SO accommodating. Â Not only is the food great and the portions awesome (nothing like leftover cabbage rolls!) but the service of this family business is unparalleled. (PS- you may even have Jocelyn herself as your server!) Â
Yelpers- Customer Service will make or break a place for me- and I simply LOVE the people over at Jocelyn's. Â I seriously want to live there!
When dining here- I opt for anything stuffed. Â Peppers, squash, cabbage or grape leaves, and its all fantastic. Â Also- this is weird but they also have a larger coffee cup than other restaurants and I love that!
Until we meet again! Â And when we do, I'll be taking stuffed peppers to the faaaaace!
I just got back from having dinner at Jocelyn's Mediterranean Restaurant & Lounge. I don't need to say much, but excellent food. The dining room looks nice with linen covered tables with candlelight and black linen napkin wrapped utensils. Light background music is in the air. In the next room is the martini lounge which is dimly lit. They serve a good menu of Mediterranean, Lebanese, and American dishes at moderate prices, most dinners in the $15-$25 range. See the menu at http://www.jocelynsresta…. Many of the dinners (come with vegetables and a starch) are also offered as appetizers for the smaller appetite. The wine and martini menu is very extensive.
I was given a basket of pita bread with butter. To get a sampling of the popular dishes, I ordered the Mediterranean Combo Appetizer ($18) as my meal. This large platter is a meal in itself and had 3 Falafel Balls, 2 Kibbe Balls, 3 Meat Grapeleaves, 3 Vegetarian Grapeleaves, 2 Stuffed Cabbage, Taboule, tahini dip, and Hommus. I was offered more pita bread to dip in the Hommus. The food was very tasty and fresh. I really enjoyed the Grapeleaves and the Stuffed Cabbage which was served warm, The Taboule was a nice touch with the platter. The Hommus was smooth and the standard kind. I was stuffed and skipped dessert, choices included Lebanese baklava, carrot cake, and turtle cheesecake.
Overall, the Combo Appetizer was an excellent dinner choice. The service was friendly and my waitress checked up on me periodically to refill ice water and offer more pita bread. The staff was arranging tables for the dinner rush with the owner supervising and walking around to each table making sure everyone was having a great meal. I will have to try out the other Mediterranean dishes next time I'm in the area.
