How much do I love Joeys? I had my 30th birthday there...that much!
Friends and I stumbled into the bar when I first moved to Brighton thinking it was going to be a dive. Instead, we found the nicest bartenders, cheap drinks, ample stools and tables, and a fun atmosphere. Don't go expecting a night out at Eastern Standard or the like, but instead go expecting a low key night where a t-shirt and jeans is the norm.
The "regulars" tend to stick to themselves and at times can make you feel like you are invading their turf, but they are harmless. Stick around long enough and they will even warm up to you.
A St. Patrick's Day level of drunk was the only way anyone was getting me to set foot inside Joey's. I have never before or since had that urge (and frankly didn't that day either, but about 5 Magners made me compliant) and I think I'm okay with that.
I'm pretty sure there's usually about 6 people in Joey's at any given time, but it was PACKED on St. Paddy's Day. We claimed a corner of the bar and downed some REALLY strong drinks. I think it was cheap? Can't remember. REALLY can't remember after the vodka. Pro tip: Once you start drinking vodka on a day-drinking holiday, you've lost the game.
Anyway. Kinda made some friends and bailed before the supppppeeeerrrrrrr drunk (and cute, if you're into that) girl next to us lost her car bomb all over the bar.
It was fun that day, but I'm gonna have to be smashed if you wanna get me to Joey's again. It smells like pee in there. And probably car bomb vom.
Wow. The atmosphere is pretty depressing. Its got an irish pub feel but the walls and ceiling are black, it feels more like an Irish funeral.
The crowd was decent, but this is not a place to socialize with other patrons, people mainly stick to the people they arrived with.
We stayed for one round of shots, which were over poured. I can tell because I'm a bartender, the "shots" had about 3 actual shots inside a rocks glass. We ordered a round of 4 of these "shots" and it was only 16 bucks plus tip.
Go there if you need to get drunk fast, but don't expect atmosphere or friendliness.
Honestly, I lived in Brighton for like 6 years and I never went into this bar??? It took 2 years in California and a trip home to get me in here. Maybe it was because they didn't serve food, who knows! But I just was here in June, and it was so fun!
The "regulars" tend to be older apparently, and they weren't too happy that we were having such an amazing time :), but TOO BAD! We got the GAGA going on the jukebox, and let the fun begin!
I am agreeing with Laura D- extremely surprised and how clean and unsketchy it was! But thrilled!
So after Porter Belly's made me angry once again me and my two girls came to Joeys. I was like look we have an hour to kill, yes it looks super sketchy but lets get drunk. Both agreed.
We walked in to a surprisingly un-sketchy, clean, neighborhood bar where we where greeted by everyone and made friends quickly. The drinks where super strong and for 20 bucks we got 4 mixed drinks. Not too shabby, especially in Boston.
They had a few games on and yes we where the only girls here. From the bathroom you can see through the shutter and back into the bar which was pretty cool.
The bartender was hilarious and if we had not dropped so much money on tickets to Porter Belly's we would have stayed. He gave us New Years tiaras since we where princesses and took our picture.
Their joint smoking, drinking Santa made our night and the bartenders quick wit kept us laughing the whole time we where here.
No they do not serve food but as other yelpers mentioned one guy there got Papa Johns delivered to the bar. They are also within walking distance to a ton of food which is cool to bring in with you.
I will be back Joey's you are awesome!
I just moved into the neighborhood and this was the first bar I went to. Like everyone else said, everyone is very friendly here and know each other by name. I was challenged to a game of darts and lost pretty bad haha
Drinks aren't too expensive which is always a plus.
See you guys there :)
They don't sell food here. Just alcohol. BUT it's SO COOL that you can order delivery to Joey's. Someone ordered a pizza and the delivery guy straight up went inside and screamed "WHO ORDERED THE PIZZA?" which was pretty awesome.
Everyone's so friendly here...I loved it! Watching the Celts game at this bar was a bit like watching the game/eating in a friend's living room. It's great to have a place like this in your neighborhood.
joey's is my favorite bar in brighton center and one of my top 5 in boston. i think i like it so much cuz it reminds me of bars in my hometown in the great frozen north - cheap, never too crowded, unpretentious, and largely free of prissy douchebags.
i thought about knocking off a star cuz they don't serve food, but they have a folder full of menus from local places that deliver, or you can run across the street and grab a burrito, or you can run down the street and grab a slice of pizza so it doesn't really matter.
i should mention that there are very few female patrons of joey's, but i don't come here to meet girls. i come here to drink beer, watch whatever game is on, blast county and metal on the jukebox, and maybe play a round or two of ghetto keno.
Joeys is your typical townie, neighborhood bar. And what a good neighbor it is.
Always there, always room, always happy to see you.
When you don't feel like dealing with the crowds and hoodlums at BBG, head over to Joeys and you'll feel right at home.
Dark, 25+ crowd for the most part, one friendly bartender, and cheap drinks.
Go over and be welcomed to the neighborhood.
I appreciate Joey's because its a) close to my house; b) mostly devoid of loud college kids; and c) reasonably priced. I think people forget about this as it isn't on Washington and thus doesn't stick out as much as Green Briar or Porter Belly's.
Come in for a couple of drafts; some video games or jukebox action and conversation.
Hungry? Â They don't serve food... BUT order a pizza to be delivered... they are a-okay with that. Â The ambience is pretty awesome, and the drinks are reasonably priced. Â Our bartender was attentive and friendly, and well-deserving of the good tips we left him! Â A fairly young and somewhat ecclectic patronage made for good surroundings (except the bar whores... but that's another story).
Don't let the marine corps flag outside scare you away... definately pop in and give Joey's a try.
I haven't spent much time in Brighton - at all - and found myself kinda wandering around with friends last night. We came into this place and immidiately got 3 open seats at the bar. The service was friendly. The volume wasn't cranked. No dude-bros - seemed like a place for decent locals.
4 stars for a PERFECT Irish Car Bomb (in glassware), and, of course, docked 1 star for no erotic photohunt or big buck hunter.
I ended up at Joey's because I was meeting Brian M., the other reviewer, to hang out and watch a Sox game.  If it wasn't for the huge windows in front, I'd call it a dive bar, but a nice dive bar.  They have several beers on tap, I think I paid 3.50 for a Sam Oktoberfest.  We had a great time, everyone could see the game no matter where they were seated, our conversations weren't interrupted with people saying "what!" every 5 minutes, and we hung out at our table by the window and watched the perfectly coiffed masses walk to the loud and crowded  "hip" bar down the street.  It was a nice change of pace and I look forward to going back.
Review Source:I've only been there once, but it's on the list to go back many more times.  It's one of only two bars that I've found in Boston (The Dugout being the other) where  you can sit and have a beer in peace, perhaps strike up a conversation with the person next to you if you like.  No obnoxiously loud music.  No 19 yr old college students doing shots.  No $12 cocktails.  Just me, and my friends, and some drinks.  Ahhh.
